SUMMARY

There aren't many clouds in the winter sky above Punt Road, with the Tigers sitting comfortably on top of the ladder after asserting their dominance over Sydney on Thursday night. With five games left at the MCG, where they haven't lost since round 13 last year, they are in the box seat to be there at the season's end. Their injury list remains short, although Reece Conca is a loss after his impressive transition to the midfield this season. They're a more threatening proposition than the Crows faced back in round two, which makes this game an even bigger challenge for Don Pyke's men. The Crows will go in with confidence after reinvigorating their season with a win over West Coast, but face a tough run to the finals. It's their last chance to play at the MCG this season and Taylor Walker seems to have found form at the right time.

WHERE AND WHEN: the MCG, Friday, July 6, 7.50pm AEST

LAST FIVE MEETINGS

R2, 2018, Adelaide Crows 18.10 (118) d Richmond 12.10 (82) at Adelaide Oval
GF, 2017, Richmond 16.12 (108) d Adelaide Crows 8.12 (60) at the MCG
R6, 2017, Adelaide Crows 21.14 (140) d Richmond 10.4 (64) at Adelaide Oval
R3, 2016, Adelaide Crows 19.14 (128) d Richmond 13.14 (92) at Etihad Stadium
R19, 2015, Adelaide Crows 11.22 (88) d Richmond 8.4 (52) at Adelaide Oval

THE SIX POINTS

1. In round two, the Crows blew away the Tigers after half-time. They led by 12 points at the break before kicking seven goals to three in the second half to win by 36.

2. Josh Jenkins was on top of Alex Rance in the first half, kicking four goals and dominating in one-on-one contests before the All Australian defender fought back to keep the Crows' forward to just one more to full time.

3. The Tigers continue to be miserly in defence this season, which has them ranked second for the fewest points conceded. The average in the competition is 71 points, with the Crows conceding 82 per game.

4. The Crows have had the better of the Tigers recently, having won four of the last five head-to-heads with an average winning margin of 46 points. But, the Tigers still have bragging rights, having triumphed in last year's Grand Final.

5. The Crows go in ranked second in contested possessions with an average of 155.4, ahead of the Tigers, who are ninth. But there isn't much separating them on the outside; the Crows are 13th and the Tigers 14th in uncontested possessions.

6. Kane Lambert continues to shine this season as a forward flanker, which is reflected in his rise in the Schick AFL Player Ratings. In round one, he was 142nd overall and goes into this round at No.55 after a steady season-long ascent.

IT’S A BIG WEEK FOR …

Skipper Taylor Walker was a major factor in the Crows' win over the Eagles as he led from the front with three second-half goals. He took a season-high 10 marks and got his hands to 22 disposals as he drove his team to victory. The question remains, can he back it up or will the ghosts of the Grand Final loss linger for him at the MCG?

PREDICTION: Richmond by 12 points

Might be splitting hairs but we were 9 points down at the 7 minute mark of the last quarter before being blown away in the last 20. The match review conveniently forgot that point

They were enormous in the last quarter though. Best quarter of footy by almost any side this year. Completely dominated the Eagles who hardly got a touch despite being the best side for three quarters.

The stats can be found below for the last 35 minutes. Almost 60 more disposals, 30 more contested and uncontested possessions, double the clearances & 6 times the inside 50s.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-07-03/the-stats-files-the-unsung-heroes-vital-to-team-success#/

The Crows in desperation just went route one and it worked but those stats are a real indictment on the Eagles' workrate or lack of. A lesson for us to not be complacent and bring the same intensity as the Swans game in the contested footy plus control the corridor as we did in the GF.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t still think about the Grand Final,” Walker said.

“They’re (the Tigers) in great form … so are we, we’re coming off a good win at the weekend, so let’s go over there and try and beat them.

Danny Frawley says only navel gazing can stop Richmond against Crows on Friday at the MCG

Richard Earle,
The Advertiser
July 4, 2018

IT’S the toughest task in football. Richmond is virtually invincible at the MCG and former Tigers’ coach Danny Frawley says Adelaide’s only hope of a triumph on Friday night is over-complacency.

Top-ranked Richmond is superior to the unit that vanquished Adelaide for the 2017 flag, with over confidence a bigger threat than any rival this season says former Richmond coach Frawley.

“I don’t think it will happen but if there is any chink it’s probably if they’re looking at how good their form is,” Frawley told Advertiser.com.au. “They don’t need to worry about that, need to focus on the next contest, enjoy their footy, get the four points and move on.”

Adelaide must win at least five of its remaining eight games to make the finals.

Frawley said its mission should be tougher after Friday night’s MCG trip against Damien Hardwick’s champion.

“You have to understand that Richmond haven’t been beaten at the ’G for 16 games. It’s a great home ground advantage and Richmond at the MCG are just about unbeatable,” said Frawley with Richmond unconquered in over a year at headquarters. “For Adelaide to come over here playing at the ’G, they will have some unsavoury memories.

“Their season is on the brink and need to string a few together. If they beat the Tigers that could send a strong foundation for rest of the year.

“It is a big ask but Rory Laird coming back, Tex Walker hitting some form and Rory Sloane getting a game under his belt, they are building.

“They got some of their mojo back in the last quarter against West Coast.”

Adelaide boss Don Pyke faces another tactical showdown with the counterpart, Hardwick, who redefined his coaching by unshackling Richmond and putting the fun back in football.

“He is coaching well. Richmond are really 90 per cent focused on themselves and 10 on the opposition since they won it last year,” said Frawley.

Richmond’s speed and No.1 ranking for post-clearance pressure is what unravelled Adelaide last September and remains Pyke’s problem on Friday night.

“They have flipped coaching on its head. Other clubs spend a lot of time focusing on the opposition and Richmond focus on bringing the heat, move the ball quick and put a lot of pressure on the opposition,” said Fox-Footy expert commentator Frawley.

Frawley said Adelaide’s infamous pre-season camp was no excuse for its fall to 11th spot but injuries to Brodie Smith, Sloane, Mitch McGovern and Brad Crouch had impacted.

“Don Pyke and the coaches are smart enough to know that is not why their season is where it is,” said 1988 All-Australian defender Frawley.

“You can talk about what happened on that camp but the players are professional and will know a few are down on form.”

Dustin Martin isn’t as dominant as his Brownlow Medal year but draws attention that has allowed Shane Edwards and Kane Lambert to get off the chain.

“If you ask Hardwick he is doing a really good job, getting the best tag but it has released guys like Shane Edwards and Lambert who are playing really well,” said Frawley of Martin.

“Damien and the club were smart enough to know that one of the best year’s in AFL history was always going to be hard to emulate. His number still stack up to having a pretty good year.”

If only they clarified what you're meant to do if you're stuck on your own near the boundary line and an opponent marks near you automatically putting you within their protected zone with nowhere to go? In the Hawks vs GWS game, a Giants player got pinged 50m for this even though the Hawthorn player was still picking himself off the ground :facepalm.

Is it that hard for umps to figure out that if an opposition player is not affecting the play whatsoever then it's not 50?!

how bout them umpires
give it a rest. they haven't reamed us like normal
they failed to pay the mark up on the Adelaide fifty, watch the replay, he had the mark, he was pulling it in and it was punched from his hands, it resulted in a goal.  Dusty was given a free against him for being tackled, he clearly handballed it, it resulted in another goal against us.  The score is not big.  I don't give a stuff if they are there, but don't make them up ffs.

Should be 50 points up.  Commentators giving me the pooe.
Forward line is almost dysfunctional given the amount of entries
Played too cute in the last 10 minutes. Too much globetrotter crap by hand instead of just nailing the goal on offer. Dimma is hopefully giving them a blast to stick with what they did in the first 15 minutes of that qtr that's got us this lead.

Sheds is silk too. Every touch that second quarter was sublime from him  :o.

Would have him, Jack, Broad & Grigg in our bests to half-time.

The Tigers won the ball at the contest in the second term, winning 13 more contested possessions, which allowed it to continue to dominate field position, winning the time in forward half by eight minutes and 21 seconds and the inside 50 count by 11.

Adelaide finished the first half recording just three inside 50s from 48 chains starting in its defensive half. Richmond has gone inside 50 17 times from 41 chains originating in its defensive half.

Richmond has conceded two goals from forward 50 intercepts for just the third time this season.

Richmond vs Richmond at the moment, we are gifting them goals to keep them in it, very frustrating to watch, just kill the Crows off and be clinical about it. Bombing the ball inside 50 against the Crows just doesnt cut it.

True but we're hardly kicking it in there to their advantage. Pathetic lazy aimless kicks inside 50 that quarter. Hard to bring it down to ground when the kicks are going nowhere near where our forwards are and straight to Crow defenders. They had about 7 intercepts off us in just one quarter  :banghead.

Not a pretty game and we mixed brilliance with the pathetic which kept them in the game for 3 qtrs but we blew them away in the last to win easily.

Despite losing the clearance count by four, the Tigers outscored the Crows by 38 points from this source, Richmond's second-best differential in the last two seasons.

Adelaide has taken just four marks in its forward 50, its lowest total in a game since Round 3, 2016.

Richmond has kicked seven goals from clearances for the first time this season. Dion Prestia has now won three clearances this quarter with all three launching goals for his team.

Was good in the 2nd half. Fumbly early.

BEllis, Broad & Astbury were sensational down back in the first. Really set the tone. Short & Bellis running forward all night to link up and break the lines. Best game of Broads career.

Not many understand just how important Broady is to the RFC :shh

The Tigers are scary good, even when they're not

It was yet another "grind it out and wear down the opposition" kind of win for Richmond. And, that's what makes the Tigers the competition's benchmark team; they can win even when they don't hit top gear. The Crows, to their credit, hung around until three-quarter time and were only 16 points adrift at the final change despite a number of players having ineffective games. However, you always felt as though the Tigers would get it done easily despite not playing to their powerful best for much of the night. Dustin Martin didn't do much until the second half, Dan Butler spent most of the game fighting against an ankle injury and they finished with Jack Graham (shoulder) and Nathan Broad (cheek) on the bench, but the premiers collectively and steadily motored away as the game wore on. With Bachar Houli and Nick Vlastuin to return next week while fellow premiership players Kamdyn McIntosh and Jacob Townsend remain squeezed out of the side, it's a realistic question to ask; just who is going to beat them?

We had 9 of the top 10 players for score involvements last night.

Harsh on Dusty you blokes.

Victim of the standard he set last year. Is getting a lot of opposition heat at the moment, which impacts his game but creates opportunities for others.

Rwally good night

Another example of the game not being broken

We play fast attacking, exciting footy. Not our fault other sides can't and cannot cope with the pressure

Well known I haven't been a huge fan of Broad but he played his best game for the club last night  :clapping

Bellis, was good again. A couple of of Bellis moments = pulling up to avoid contact but on the whole good. Pleasing to see

Can't stress how important Prestia is

Posted on another thread; improved performance by Moore but a few howlers that are just so costly. The set shot goal kicking is a real worry. And please going crook at Dusty  :o you stuffed up kid, not Dusty

Prestia is huge. The domino effect he causes letting guys like Lambert off the chain can't be underestimated. Arguably our most important player.

Broad was great last week too. He's turning into a very astute pick.

TBH I think Moore had the right idea wanting it over the back. Not really Dustin's fault either though.

Once he kicked the goal from outside 50 in the third he got his swagger back, was back to his best in the final qtr, hes back.

Broady is a gun, hopefully only misses 1-2 weeks - 1-2 week injuries are actually a blessing as it gives the players a bit of a freshen up. Hopefully Grahams isnt too bad - 4 at most to give him a chance to get back in the side, but who knows

Has been suffering from vertigo. Is that since Grimes ran rings around him?
