Chris Scott “I’m in the small camp that thinks we can beat them”

We should rest no one and smash them this week. After this game we can rest a few

Should be a blockbuster but we know the pussy fans won't turn up.

Unless it's their won big heap.

Time for the BOO to reappear.

We know they don't like that, those poor little moggies.

Everyone seems to think they’re a hot chance of beating us after they beat up a bottom team.

last week we needed to win to cement top spot and move a game clear. This game we need to win mainly because this club is a joke led by a coach who drinks his own bath water

Scott just hates our club and everyone in it, much like the boomer harvey mould

1 point win will be nice.

And a 10 goal win will be even better. Chris Scott thinks his poo doesn't stink, he always tries so very hard to be a clever communicator, "listen to me i'm smart" he's a stuffen brain dead moron.

It will be their GF. They really need to win or they might be stuffed and miss finals all together.

I had them just making the eight by percentage over Norf on the ladder predictor. If they lose to the hawks they’ll miss. I reckon they’ll throw everything at this game because they’ll be a sneaky chance for top 4 if all goes right for them

Melbourne are our biggest threat IMO.

My final eight.
1. Richmond. Wins all four remaing games.
2. Port.     Wins all four
3. Melb.    Wins all four
4. Filth.  Loses to Port.
5. West Coke. Losses to Port and Dees.
6. GWS. Loses to Dees.
7. Dawks. Lose to Cats.
8. Cats. Lose to us.
9. Nomads. Win all games.
10. Swans. Lose to Coll, Dees, GWS, Dawks.
11. Essendrug. Who cares?

SUMMARY

If last week's Richmond-Collingwood clash was highly anticipated, this one has roared back into relevancy over the past two weeks with the Cats winning their way back into the finals conversation. The Tigers continued to be a force against the wounded Magpies on Saturday; they ran out 28-point winners and moved a full game clear of the second-placed West Coast. They keep finding new ways to win too, with their usual ball-winners upstaged by the likes of Shane Edwards, Jayden Short and Jack Higgins while David Astbury will present Tom Hawkins with a big challenge. The Cats need to keep winning to shore up their likelihood of playing finals, and with a tough clash with Hawthorn to follow this one, they'd ideally like to keep the momentum running into round 21. And, with Gary Ablett hitting some form and Rhys Stanley enjoying a career revival, they're in a good spot.

WHERE AND WHEN: the MCG, Friday, August 3, 7.50pm AEST

LAST FIVE MEETINGS
R13, 2018, Richmond 12.11 (83) d Geelong Cats 9.11 (65) at the MCG
2QF, 2017, Richmond 13.13 (91) d Geelong Cats 5.10 (40) at the MCG
R21, 2017, Geelong Cats 11.14 (80) d Richmond 9.12 (66) at GMHBA Stadium
R21, 2016, Geelong Cats 10.22 (82) d Richmond 12.6 (78) at the MCG
R5, 2015, Geelong Cats 12.13 (85) d Richmond 11.10 (76) at the MCG

THE SIX POINTS

1. Can the Cats be the first to defeat the Tigers at the MCG in over a year? Saturday's win over Collingwood saw the premiers notch up their 18th win in a row at the venue, which is a competition record. Their last loss there was in round 13 last year, at the hands of Sydney.

2. Expect a barnstorming final term. The Tigers are also the best finishing team in the League, having won 14 fourth quarters. But, the Cats are no slouches in that area either; they're equal third with 12.

3. It will be a contest between two of the best defences in the competition. The Tigers are second for the least points conceded with an average of 70 while the Cats are fourth with 74 per game.

4. Tom Hawkins has roared into form to be the game's dominant forward lately. Since round nine, he's kicked 38 goals including 14 in the last two weeks. He's the first player to boot seven goals or more in consecutive games since 2012.

5. The Tigers have won the last two clashes between the sides but before that, the Cats claimed 13 in a row dating back to round six, 2007.

6. Unsurprisingly, the big mover when it comes to Geelong and the Schick AFL Player Ratings is Hawkins. His big turn of form has seen him skyrocket from 92nd overall at round 16 to 63rd after his seven goals against Brisbane.

IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR…

The Cats have shown they're prepared to run with Dustin Martin in the past and Scott Selwood is the man most likely to be given the job. Collingwood's Levi Greenwood reminded us on Saturday the bull-like Tiger doesn't always like close attention. Selwood didn't play back in round 13 but could be deployed to try and stop Martin's midfield influence.

PREDICTION: Richmond by 19 points.

Cats set off on Tiger hunt at MCG as epic battle looms

Peter Ryan
The Age
1 Aug 2018

Playing at the MCG will hold no fears for Geelong when they attempt to end Richmond's winning streak at the home of football on Friday night and cement a spot inside the top eight.

In what will be Geelong star Gary Ablett's first Friday night game at the MCG since the 2010 preliminary final, the Cats are ready for the prime time battle.

Cats coach Chris Scott says his side will meet the challenge of playing the Tigers in what looms as an epic battle.

"The stakes are obviously pretty high for us but whatever happens I am confident that we were proactive and on the front foot and had a good crack as opposed to hoping things will go our way," Scott said.

The Tigers have won 18 in a row at the venue, defeating Geelong twice at the MCG during that sequence.

Geelong have won two games in five appearances at the venue in 2018 and trained at Deakin University - which has the same dimensions as the MCG - this week in preparation for the contest.

Scott admitted they would like to play better at the finals venue but said it wasn't a huge factor in their preparation.

"The venue doesn't hold any fears for us," Scott said.

"We're like every other team in the competition. We know that if we are to get to where we aspire to be we are going to have to play good footy at the MCG against a team that plays it the best in the competition."

The Cats have won two and lost two at the MCG in the past two finals series with one of those losses to a rampaging Richmond in last year's qualifying final.

They two teams met at the MCG in round 13 and were locked together at three quarter-time before Richmond surged away with four goals to one in the final quarter.

Geelong have five inclusions since that game with Scott Selwood, Cam Guthrie, Dan Menzel, Lachie Henderson and Quinton Narkle replacing  Zach Guthrie, James Parsons, Cory Gregson, Lincoln McCarthy and Jordan Murdoch, however they will need to find an inclusion with Tom Stewart set to miss with an ankle injury.

In contrast the Tigers were missing David Astbury through injury and will once again be without Dion Prestia while Liam Baker and Jacob Townsend are back in the side for the injured Dan Butler and Reece Conca. Ryan Garthwaite replaced Astbury and Jack Graham has been in and out of the team.

Scott said the Cats had great respect for Richmond but the prospect of playing them was not intimidating.

"They have won that many at the MCG for a reason. They play the ground very well," Scott said.

"It's more a product of them being a very good team as opposed to them playing the ground particularly well.

"They are a very, very good team but when we play at our best we're a very good team as well."

Scott said the centre clearance battle would be a big factor in determining the result and he admitted the Cats had released the shackles slightly since playing the Tigers in round 13.

They have scored two goals more per game on average in the five games since that match although they have conceded more scores too.

"We're of the view that especially against the best teams - and Richmond are clearly on the top of that group - you need to have the capacity to score and put them under pressure because if you just try to hang in and protect the back half against them the weight of numbers can tell in the end," Scott said.

Half-time

Richmond  4.2   6.6-42
Geelong    2.4    5.7-37

Goals: Riewoldt 2, Cotchin, Castagna, Nankervis, Higgins

Dominated inside 50s and got 4 goals up and thought this is too easy and started playing too cute and lazy midway through that 2nd qtr :banghead. That mental drop off lead to silly mistakes (eg: dropping sitters and short passes to Geelong defenders  :scream ) and a drop off in our pressure which gifted Geelong a goal against the run of play and then the momentum as the Cats just kept playing on under little pressure. Dimma needs to give them a rocket a half-time and tell them to get their brains back into gear and back to the hard working fundamental stuff.

Not one for being an umpire basher but without a doubt I reckon they missed at least 10 frees we should have got that quarter alone, plus a mark.
Umpiring has been a joke tonight.

We're continually being scragged without the ball = no free.

Geelong players continually dropping the ball in the tackle = no free.

Whatever happened to illegal disposal eh umps  ::).

Between the free kicks and the 10 minutes of brain Fades, we cost ourselves a 5-6 goals lead at HT. This isn’t a team to give a sniff, ask the Dees...

Totally agree took foot of the pedal and got to cute not doing the simple stuff.I hope as you said Dimma reminds them do the basics and come out 3 qtr.

Thankfully Jack puts it through.

the structure of the team in the last 3-5 mins was a bit worrying. Letting the ball just slip over the back for Geelong to walk into an open goal square for back to back goals is pretty poor. Lucky we had Ablett miss or we would have been shafted

Too cute by half, nearly cost us. Can some of the nifty flicks, pinball taps, quickfire handpasses and groovy grubbers and just cop the stuffing tackle sometimes , even it's htb it'll at least slow down their counter attack....oh and a bit more composure ging inside 50 would be nice.....#unleashthewombat...:shh

On the other hand how far have we come  andd how good is it that we can fart arse about for large periods of a match against the likes of Geelong and without our best 22 and still win..... :shh :shh

Just watched the replay, McAvaneys call was very pro geelong, ling on the commentary as well.
The one sidedness of the umpiring decisions in favour of Selwood is amazing.
The observation of commentators calling unpaid free kicks for geelong and the stunning silence after bad decisions which were blatantly obvious unpaid free kicks for RFC left me gobsmacked.
Also McAveneys pumped up call for a Geelong goal and casual mention of Richmonds goals was pitiful.
He is dead to me as a commentator.

Should have been 8 goals up at half time and should have won comfortably.
Too much unselfishness and poor conversion of inside 50's because of this.
Let the cat flogs think they are close.  Wont even make the finals anyway.
Umpiring was definately one sided and we must speak to the AFL about this before the finals.
