The fringe Tiger that should be on Carlton's radar
By SEN
20 Aug 2018
Richmond has list depth beyond that of any club in the competition and Sam Lloyd is one of their players struggling to get a regular game.
Lloyd, 28, was given an opportunity on the weekend with a number of senior players rested but Garry Lyon believes Carlton should target the forward/midfielder who has played just 57 for the Tigers games over five seasons.
“I’m a big Lloyd fan. Sam Lloyd mightn’t be in their best 22 because they’re so good, but he should be a big target for an opposition club, he’s too good for VFL footy,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.
“He should be playing AFL footy.
“At Carlton for example, he would be a walk-up start in their team.”
The Blues have struggled to hit the scoreboard this year, averaging 8.8 goals per game, ranked 17th in the competition and a player like Lloyd could add some bite forward of centre with his finishing ability.
Lloyd kicked 35 goals in 2016 for the Tigers, but has only played 15 games across the last two seasons.

Our Sam for their Sam.... :shh

2nd rounder thanks
2020 first rounder.

Isn’t he out of contract therefore we get nothing?

Yep can walk to the PSD and we get zip
-
Carlton will have bigger fish to fry in the PSD so Lloyd may have to be traded for.

Sam Lloyd on the fringe again tomorrow night. Natural old school player, good finisher. Snouts say Dogs are keen on luring the Tiger to the kennel ... @7NewsMelbourne

Well I'll give the Doggies credit for persistence ;D
Press repeat :rollin

Good luck to him, deserves a shot. Good bloke and player IMO.

So will end up at any of the other 17 clubs then.

Realy love lloydy wish him all the best, but gotta face it team gunna be bloody hard for him to break into more so with lynch coming.
On that note, really hope Lynch realises he has a lot of hard work to do to be part of this team and I know it may sound stupid but is a bit of VFL time out of the ?

Tom Lynch playing VFL?
He is the ultimate pro. Was captain of a club. He'll earn the boys respect, already has actually. If he plays VFL ever it's because he'll have been injured for 10 years at least
-
Hope we don't just give these fringe players away. Sam is worth an early 3rd round pick to another club and Miles is worth a late 2nd round.
Not our fault they can't break into the best team in the AFL.
Be a great draft to have 3-4 extra 2nd and 3rd round picks whilst keeping our first 2.

Jon Ralph said the Bulldogs were sniffing around Lloyd, but “someone told me he’d be happy to stay at the club next year, not on massive coin, he just loves them.”

Will stay me thinks :shh
-
staying
-
I hope he stays.
He has shown in the VFL he can be more than just a midsized forward. His skills are first class along with his footy smarts.
If he can do a big preseason and work on his pace and fitness, I think he can be a good player for us.
I would also like to keep Townsend if possible. He offers something no other player on our list offers.
I would get rid of Bellis and Conca before those two and also save a bit of cash.
-
Believe Lloyd will be staying as he love the place too much :clapping Good depth player to have on the list.
-
Yeah let's just keep the same old c graders on the list year after year..... :clapping
-
Cotchin mentioned in his interview with Richo that a few of the boys will be departing, we will know in time who they are.

Lloyd to join the Bulldogs
SAM LANDSBERGER

RICHMOND forward Sam Lloyd is set to play for the Western Bulldogs next year.
The Herald Sun understands the Tigers midfielder has cleaned out his Punt Rd locker and is determined to join Whitten Oval.
The Herald Sun revealed in June that Lloyd was a player of interest for the Dogs.

Confirmed by his manager.
Thanks Sam for your contribution to the Richmond Footy Club. :clapping :clapping :clapping

Will never forget that goal after the siren against the Swans. :cheers

Hope we get something decent,he is worth more then a 3 rd pick maybe a Swap of second rd picks upgrade for us or maybe swap for Tom Campbell.
-
Lloyd's manager Robbie D'Orazio said on Tuesday the forward was set to join the Bulldogs in the upcoming trade period, which officially starts next Monday.
His teammate Nick Vlastuin said if Lloyd was leaving he went with Vlastuin's best wishes, as he had been a great asset for the Tigers both as a player and as a contributor to creating a strong culture at the club.

All the best to Lloyd went alright and should be playing somewhere rather than festering.
-
23rd player at the best team. Better than playing seniors for bottom 4 club. If dogs think he's best 22 then they can cough up a 2nd rounder.
Sam Murray got a 2nd round pick and he was a rookie
-
Needs to look after himself so should go for the longer contract. Good luck!

Age is against him. Will be surprised if we get better than a third rounder.
-
Good luck to him. Was a really good kick for goal and had a good goal sense.
-
One of the greatest journeyman. Could absolutely kick a goal. As mentioned already that goal after the siren was an amazing memory that gave us our only real highlight in 2016
-
Word around is Lloyd is worth a 2nd round pick but the Dogs currently don't have one. After pick 7, their next pick is 43. So they'll either have to trade for one, offer up a player swap or offer up a future pick.
-
I would take their 2019 second round pick. Gives options next year and maybe the one after when we need points for Rioli jnr
-
future pick would be fine.
When Rioli jnr eligible?
-

So wouldn't play his first game till 2021?

That's my understanding.

Probably going to need points for Xavier Naish and Harry Broderick next year anyway.... :shh
-
Bulldogs' list manager Sam Power confirmed Sam Lloyd wants to join them and that they will sit down with Richmond over the next 7-10 days to work out a trade deal.
-
After seeing the way GC so easily bent us over for Miles & CEllis they'll probably offer us a pick in the hiundreds... :shh
-
The Bulldogs currently have picks 6, 25 (Dahlhaus compo), 44, 61, 62, 80, ...
-

You really think GC are the winners in the off season?
-
I'm talking about one trade not their entire off season of which I couldn't give two stuffs...
-
Happy to get a 3rd rounder for Sam cant really expect to much considering about of games his played
-
I would ask a swap of our second rounders between clubs.
-
Doggies want him, just like they did last year
They will pay with a decent pick(s)
I would ask a swap of our second rounders between clubs.
yes Lloyd and pick 24 for our 2nd round pick works nicely ;D
-
The Dogs want their second round pick for father-son Rhylee West. Unless they can still get the draft points needed to match any offer if it comes then they won't trade their 2nd rounder.
-
I'd take a future pick in 2020 with a view to making sure Maurice Jnr is covered in the bid matching stakes.
-
Junior's draft isn't until 2020.... :shh

He is uncontracted, Doggies could get him for nothing as a de-listed FA ;D

A Tiger supporter on twitter posted Lloyd & pick 73 for the Dogs' picks 62 & 63.
A Dogs fan counted with only pick 62 going to Richmond for Lloyd + 73.
-
No way were getting bend over here.Lloyd is going to be playing best 22 pick in the 60 no thanks.Rather a player swap.
-
Not like Balmey to allow a fire sale for a bunch of shyte picks... :shh
-
Uncontracted unwanted players attracting crumbs this year. Gary Rohan and Ryan Clarke only worth 4th rounders (pick 61).
-
Did Sydney have to add in pick 61 to get rid of that dud?
-
SAM LLOYD (Richmond)
Should make a big impact in a Western Bulldogs forward line craving more crafty goalkickers like Lloyd.
Late pick swap in pipelines.

Lloyd off to the Dogs for pick 64.

Here's the official announcement:
Trade paperwork officially lodged. Richmond have traded Sam Lloyd to the Western Bulldogs for its Rd 4 selection, currently selection number 64.

-
Oh man talking about taking unders.....
-
Given away!
Another uncontracted player worth hardly anything on the open market in this year's trade period. We'll most likely get a similar late pick for Stengle at best based on what's happened so far.
-
Pick 64 will be an absolute gun........
NOT.
Should have kept him unless he's on more than 400K
-
Amazing what people on here are expecting to get for fringe players who can’t get a game with us.
-
All this cleaning out gives opportunities to the next crop coming through, no issue with it.
They have no value.
Naish, Balta, CJ, Baker, Bolton, Markov
Combined with the new kids we bring in this year and still most likely have Moore and Menadue there pushing their luck too
-

Exactly. We are replacing our emergencies who wernt up for it at afl level with our younger crop who have it all ahead of them.
-
Hmm. I think we got ripped off though. We took Lloyd at 60odd. We developed him into a best 22 standard. They poach him in his prime. And we get more or less the same pick back for our work.
-
He got offered 2 year deal I believe we would have offered the same maybe less coin tho ,but he went cause of lack of opportunities.
-
You couldn't honestly say that you see Mile, C Ellis and or Lloyd in our best 22 in 2 years time if they stayed.
The young kids all have the potential to be, im a little disappointed we are going to lose Stengle but its just a consequence of having a strong list and good spotting from our scouts.
-
Lloyd will be 29 at start of next season.
Not sure we were going to do any better.
Thanks for your service Sam and especially the after siren win v Swans a couple of years back. Good luck with the Bulldogs.
Time for us to renew the reserves.
-
Wacko pick 64 really going to be hitting the draft hard..... :clapping
...wouldn't say we've been bent over...sounds more like we were on our back with our legs in the air..... :shh

Richmond’s General Manager – Football, Neil Balme, said Lloyd was a well-liked player at the Club.
“Sam came to Richmond as a 23-year-old and quickly became a popular person amongst the players, coaches and staff,” Balme said.
“He had limited opportunities at AFL-level this year and we respect his decision to seek a trade.
“We wish him all the best in his future at the Western Bulldogs.”

Lloyd has apparently got a two-year contract at the Dogs. He wouldn't have got that if he had stayed with us.
-
Its the fact he is a better player now than when he joined us. He might not crack best 22 in our team but he would in at least 8 others. I'm not saying he is worth a first round pick but at the very least a 3rd round pick.

pick 64 is not far from a late 3rd rounder when you add compensation picks in.

They had Pick 45- that would've been fair. :shh
-
A swap of Lloyd for Roughead would have been fair.
Chris Bond now available.
-
I suppose you win some you lose some (or a lot). We got Bank got nothing which leaves you with an awesome feeling. It's a shame when you see someone like Lloyd leave for virtually nothing.
-
Best of luck Sam.
Loyal servant of the Tigers and deserves the chance to play some senior footy before he retires.
-
Good luck to him...
I hope he goes well and gets some time in the midfield. He isn’t quick but his footy brain will get him plenty of kicks.
He has come a long way since his arrival at Tigerland.
-
Of all the departures - Miles, Cellis, Stengle and Conca - this is the one that hurts a little, imo was best 22(just) and shouldve been in ahead of Conca at the business end of the season. Wish him well, has worked really hard
-
Lloyd for Bontempelli would have been good!!
Wish him well.

Lloyd reveals Richmond frustrations
By Nic Negrepontis
SEN
23 Jan 2019
New Western Bulldogs forward Sam Lloyd admits a lack of senior opportunities at Richmond was extremely frustrating.
Lloyd played seven games for the Tigers last year, averaging 17 disposals and kicking five goals for the season.
The 28-year-old joined the Bulldogs in the trade period, with the Tigers receiving pick 64 in return, after struggling to force his way in as a first-choice player in the yellow and black.
“To be honest, it was very frustrating at times last year,” Lloyd told SEN Breakfast.
“We had such a good group at the club and such good positivity around the place, it was hard to stay down for too long.
“I found it really tough at times when you were told you were playing really good footy, but they just can’t find a spot for you.
“We had a super side at Richmond last year and it was just one of those things where it was too hard to get in at times or replace a bloke like Trent Cotchin or Dion Prestia and then they came straight back into the side.”
Lloyd feels the biggest difference between the 2016 and 2017 premiers is the age and experience of the playing group.
“The biggest thing I’ve seen is the general age of the group from Richmond to the Bulldogs,” Lloyd said.
“I was probably around the middle of the pack at Richmond, and now well and truly one of the senior guys in terms of age.
“That’s probably the main difference I’ve seen.
“We’re a club that could really surprise people, there’s a lot of young talent, but there’s also a lot of premiership players around from 2016.”

Had Lloyd still been with the Tigers this season — he was traded for pick 64 — he would almost certainly be playing in the Richmond seniors, given its lengthy injury list.
It was the opposite situation in 2017-18 when the Tigers had an extremely settled side.
He doesn't look at it that way, saying he is now completely invested in the Bulldogs’ future direction, but thankful for his experiences with Richmond.
“I was feeling for them a bit, as I think they had about 11 or 12 players out last week,” Lloyd said of the Tigers.
“(At Richmond) I was incredibly lucky to work with guys that have been superstars of the competition, with great coaches and in a well established culture.
“I don't have any sour grapes. I consider myself lucky to have been in that culture. Now I can try to bring a couple of things across to help a culture (at the Bulldogs) that is already pretty well established.”
In football terms, his decision to seek a fresh start was “a smart move … 100 per cent”.

In hindsight, Sam would’ve got a regular gig this year.
Our biggest loss of the off season trades. We could’ve done with his goal sense this finals series.

Given our injuries this year I think all of Lloyd, Miles and Conca would have got games - and probably stifled the development of Stack, Baker, Ross, Bolton and possibly Egg, Naish to a lesser extent.
I was a fan of Miles and Lloyd more than Conca but there's no doubt all parties are better off I think.

Or, possibly we don't pick up Stack as all our spots are taken?
-
List management has been spot on for the past few seasons
-
Jeez absence makes the heart grow fonder....Lloyd stiil hasn't kicked more than three goals in a game, Conca's still a horrible decision maker who turns it over at will, costs games and only got games because Lyon values tackling along with virtually everything else over skills and the only thing Anthony "Selwood 0.5" Miles would've improved was our free kick differential.. :shh
