Ok as the 2018 Finals series is upon us, its time to discuss who we think will win this week and who are our potential threats going forward.

Tiges - too quick for the Hawks.
Dees - should beat Geelong but it's hard to trust their mindset and they've choked twice against the Cats this year. As much as I can't stand Chris Scott, it wouldn't surprise me if his Cats win via finals experience alone.
Swans - should beat the Giants. Too many injured/underdone GWS players.
Eagles - It's in Perth and I hate Collingwood  ;D.

Premiership prediction:
As reigning premiers who backed up by becoming minor premiers this year, of course we can win the flag again. Not going to be easy though. They never are. Need to bring our best high pressure footy. Every team is a threat if we're complacent but really we won't fear anyone. The only team in the top 8 we haven't beaten this year are the Eagles but that was over in Perth. Different ball game at the 'G. Another reason why it's important to win tonight.

Hawthorn looks on paper to be much weaker this week. Melbourne should easily win that one.
Collingwood and GWS to be tighter with the giants inability to play the MCG swinging towards the pies.

I'm tipping Hawthorn despite their outs.

Melbourne always look to me to be 15 minutes from s***ting themselves in every game they play.

The pressure is building, and I reckon they will fold.

I think Melbourne are probably much like us (& bulldogs ‘16) this year so with some self belief, luck and momentum, anything could happen. Good midfield depth with plenty of grunt. Forward line definitely has some potency but their defence is probably their weekness. Still some questions mentally but so did we last year.

Pies are similar to Melbourne but their defence and forward line is a worry for them. All starting to click when they decided to play a pressure game much like us. Very deep midfield but their defence is not that good. A little stronger now with the addition of Goldsack, thought he was good last week against West Coast.

Hawks have a great coach and are well drilled but if the Dees apply the pressure, like last week, they won’t be capable to withstand it. I don’t rate them.

GWS are chock full of talent but Kelly is a huge loss. Anything could happen but I feel they may still be fragile when heavy pressure is applied.

West Coke is the team I’d expect to play us in the GF. Nick Nat a huge loss as is Gaff. Some excellent forwards, a solid defence and a solid midfield. Im glad we don’t have to play them again in Perth.
I’m not that nervous playing against them at the G.

Honestly, I’m not too worried about any of these remaining teams and I’m not loosing any sleep worrying about who we might be playing because I think we’ll have any of them covered on grand final day.
But If I had to rate these teams in terms of who I’d like to play with the least amount worries it would be in this order - (5 being least worried. 1 being most worried.)

5. Hawks.
4. West Coast.
3. GWS.
2. Pies.
1. Dees.

I just think the Dees have the most weapons and I’m probably wrong about west coast but they don’t worry me at all.

I reckon the Hawks are being hugely undersold. 3 bucks HtH?

I'd still have Melbourne as beating them if they find their rhythm and don't choke.

Senior Hawks went missing in both finals.

Hard to read last night's game. Melbourne looked the more dangerous and obviously quicker side and we're in control on the scoreboard for most of the game to hold off any Hawthorn charges. They deserved the win. Having said that, Hawthorn were missing their best midfielder (O'Meara) and defender (Stratton). The Dees also had a night out in front of goal while the Hawks blew so many goalscoring chances (Gunston kicked 3.5) especially in the second quarter when they dominated inside 50s yet kicked 6 points and the Hawks still got within 2 goals midway through the last quarter and could've made further inroads if Gunston hadn't hit the post from 20 out on the run trying to be too cute.

Melbourne hasn't fallen behind and had to chase the game in both matches so far either. So they haven't had to cope with scoreboard pressure in finals. I'm sure Dimma would've made a few mental notes of all this if we and the Dees make it through to the GF.

The proof will be in the pudding next week for Melbourne against a tougher opponent than Geelong or Hawthorn. Obviously, if they beat the Eagles at Optus with both Kennedy & Darling playing then they will have definitely deserved their spot in the GF.

Talk about an open game. Hardly finals like in terms of defensive pressure around the contest. The Giants have been hopeless and the only reason they are still in it (just) is because the Pies butchered the ball for all the dominance and inside 50s they've had. They should be 7 goals up and the game over.

Edit: GWS have finally kicked their first. Still in it at 8 - 24.

Pies up 33-26 at half-time. The more all-in melees wasting energy and tiring themselves out the better :yep.

I wouldn't say we'd be worried by what either side has dished up so far tonight. We'd just feed off all these turnovers.

The betting will be interesting this week. You'd assume we would go in heavy favourites.  I'm sure we will be all over them for 4 quarters, thought the Giants let themselves down in this area in patches.

They say they review every goal, every time we have had similar decisions they stop the game. Why not on this occasion and considering they didnt then why stop on any occasion, just go back to the middle and if the decision cant be reversed by the bounce then bad luck.

yep its a joke. Another one was the goal to de goey on half time. Watch the replay and slow down and time the last 5 seconds. What a coincidence they dont show the clock with 2 seconds left. Thats because the siren should have gone off a second before he kicked it.

how can a club get so many of the important decisions their way is staggering

What about the DeGoey straight arm hold of the jump 10 metres out from goal early in the last I think it was. The umpire was in the perfect position to see both guys holding. In a big final where goals are hard to come by, that is just too soft imo.
That type of contest happens 10 times a game with a play on called most times.

Shiel’s ripping tackle on WHE I think it was?? Right in front of the umpire and it was playon. Collingwood managed a goal shortly after. Finals umpiring is normally great but this year it has been dodgy. You know there is an agenda up when the technical ones are paid one way but ignored the other.

Seen Jack Riewoldt pull that one about 4 times one game and everyone here cried about him not getting free kicks for it. Classic forwards tactic. Really feel for the defenders if they ever get pinged for it

As my mate said last night; anyone with a nickname like ‘Razor Ray’ has a publicist.

That bloke is all about himself. Suppose his method is sound as he can’t umpire for poo and he gets semi finals.

The Dees having a mare so far like we did in the first half last night. The game should be over already but the Eagles haven't totally finished them off on the scoreboard. 4.8 to 0.3 at quarter time. West Coast should be 8-9 goals up.

Sadly, if the Eagles make it then it's the Pies flag to lose at the 'G. It's harsh but we really blew a flag last night  :banghead.

I agree, they were slick, wanted it more and had no expectations on the game. Totally out coached.

Pies V West Coast will be interesting imo. If last nights Pies team shows up and plays like they did then they’ll win IMO. West Coast beat them comfortably on the G in the middle of the year though.

Pies didn't have Cox, Treloar, Goldsack and Aish against the Eagles that day (who still had Gaff). Unlike last night, Collingwood failed to put their dominance in the first half on the scoreboard (due to inaccuracy - 6.9 to 8.1), which is key to their gameplan as they go all out to jump teams early and then control the game. The Eagles then got on top in the second half as the Pies tired. That's the only way I see Collingwood losing next week. If they don't kick straight in the first half and keep the Eagles in it again. Otherwise, the Pies will waltz the flag in :chuck.

That's why the start last night was so important last night. Instead, we didn't mentally turn up, missed the first three shots of the game and then rolled over in the first half once the Pies kicked a couple  :scream. The second half showed if we had stayed in touch on the scoreboard we could've/would've/should've ran over them (we kicked 6 of first 8 goals after half-time). However, we were too far back. Credit to Collingwood out-working, outsmarting and out-coaching us as you say but it wasn't as if we didn't know what was coming. They didn't do anything different to what they normally do. Just poor coaching, poor team selection, poor preparation and poor execution by us. We blew it!  :banghead

I hope so, Owl. I hope they bring what we've seen today and can translate it to the 'G and not a repeat of 2015 when they didn't turn up. However, the past 5 Grand Finals have seen the Vic team beat the interstate side and in most of them comprehensively. It was great to watch last year when we were the Victorian side but it'll be painful to watch next week  :P.

Best team all year, finish two games clear but once it comes to finals it just comes down to the day and if you are off by even a little bit then that's the end. Adelaide could say the same thing after last year. They had a great season, cruised through their finals and then had their pants pulled down on the big day. A couple years ago if someone said we would win a flag, finish on top and make a prelim I think I would have taken it and run really far away. As Tigers fans we should just hope that we can stay at the pointy end for at least a few more seasons and be in the mix for another flag after the decades of crap we've put up with.

Who woulda thunk it?  An umpire had the chance to swing the match Collingwood's way but didn't!  Oh, the irony ...    :lol

Mixed feeling from me tbh the game was hard to watch as all I could think about is that we should’ve been there in our black shorts and traditional jumper.  :banghead

We really choked on the second most important day of the footy year. It’s a disgrace how unRichmond we were that night. We got smashed in every facet of the game that night with Riewoldt the only player that could legitimately hold his head high with a solid game up forward.
The pies showed that we could be beaten at our own game with very astute match ups all over the ground, winning the battle both in the coaches box and out on the field.

Today the Pies run out of legs in the second half and were lucky to have only lost by 5 points as west coast really dominated in the second half without capitalising on their acendecy.

It’s hard to say but if we didn’t waste our opportunity that night, I think we would’ve been able to run out the game longer than the pies were able and I think our game style and pressure may have troubled them for far longer than what the Pies did today.

That said the eagles were very good and it would’ve sucked more to lose the gf and the opportunity to go back to back.

Eagles did what we couldn't when the gor jumped in the first qtr

Hung in and worked their way back on thr game and look what happened?

They get the flag

100% agree. That and also their defence handled cox and the pies fwd line a whole lot better. Even though cox and degoey ended up with 2 and 3 goals, they did not have anywhere near the impact that they did against us.

Props to eagles they wrestled back the game on their own terms and their contested marking was awesome after qtr time.

I thought that it was interesting that, similar to us versus the Crows last year, while Collingwood were in front by a good margin on the scoreboard at qtr time, the Eagles were winning both clearances and contested footy.

Mick Malthouse said early in the second qtr of last years grandfinal that while we were trailing early, that signs very good in that we were winning those two stats and that our coaches would actually be very happy with how we were going.

This year we were worst for contested possession differential, and I'll bet not great on the clearances.

There is a lesson in this for us if we want to win another flag.

McGovern is such a gun

I know people over here in the West who reckon the Eagles paid well overs for him.

Well if they did, he is worth every cent of it. His compsure and contested work was first class today. Like Rance last year, stood tall when the game was on the line.

Such a gun player that just reads the ball so well. He’s so good despite having a fat gut and no definition in his arms. Imagine if he actually trained hard and was built like a Rance.  :rollin

Some dopey Collingwood supporter has started a petition protesting about the umpiring in the Grand Final and they want the result reversed  :lol.

https://www.change.org/p/australian-football-league-afl-to-review-the-umpiring-that-cost-collingwood-the-premiership-and-to-reverse-the-result

“This petition is being brought to your attention in regard to serious concerns by the football public, especially supporters of the Collingwood Football Club who believe that certain umpiring decisions in the 2018 AFL Grand Final were either wrongly awarded, were missed entirely and eventually were what cost the Collingwood Football Club the premiership.

Three examples of this, which are clearly visible on the Channel 7 footage are as follows:

1) the video replay judgement of the goal given to West Coast in the first qtr clearly showed that the ball was touched as it crossed the line, not by the boot of the WCE player but came off another part of his body and was clearly a behind. The resultant score should then have read 1.3 instead of 2.2.

2) the video replay of a Collingwood behind at the same end in the last qtr clearly showed that no WCE player had deflected the flight of the ball, the the result should have been declared as a Collingwood goal. The resultant score would then be 12.7 instead of 11.8.

3) the illegal blocking shepherd on Brayden Maynard with 2 minutes to play should have been paid as a free kick to Maynard as it was considered an act of interference which allowed the West Coast player to goal. The decision should have then allowed Maynard possession to clear the ball and in so doing the goal to West Coast would not have eventuated, giving them a final score of 11.8 for the game.

There were numerous other decisions which affected the game including the whack to the ribs by Ryan of WCE on Maynard which was missed by the umpire standing 3 metres from the incident. Maynard should have received a free kick with a subsequent report for striking being given to Ryan.

We as Collingwood supporters, as well as most of the general public feel that a grand final should be allowed to be won on merit, and not be awarded as the result of poor umpiring and biases toward clubs and particular players held by the governing body. We DEMAND that the decisions made on Saturday the 29th Sept be overhauled and reviewed in their entirety, and that either the result reversed, or the game declared a no-result and replayed in its entirety at a future date. Failure to act on on this will effect in a vote of no confidence in the AFL administration, the umpiring panel, and the competition in general.”

Needs to add:

Jeremy Howe being tackled in the Eagle's goalsquare in the final minutes, prior opportunity without doubt but umpire called for a ball up. Incorrect decision should have been "BALL".

Should be included

Will history repeat for a second year running?

1979: Collingwood kicks the first 5 goals of the Grand Final before choking and losing by 5 points.
1980: Richmond flogs Collingwood in the Grand Final by a record margin.

2018: Collingwood kicks the first 5 goals of the Grand Final before choking and losing by 5 points.
2019: Richmond flogs Collingwood in the Grand Final by a record margin(?)

We can only hope  ;D  :pray.

Now that the dust has settled on 2018, I frequently find myself wondering if the biggest thing that cost the Pies this year's flag was not having the presence to keep things cool when required.

My instinct is that losing Neil Balme might have cost them a lot more than they realise.
