AFL to introduce mid-season rookie draft in 2019

By Michael Gleeson & Peter Ryan
The Age
4 October 2018 — 3:57pm

Clubs will have more flexibility to tweak their lists right up to the start of next season and a new mid-season draft will be held next year under new rules approved by the AFL Commission.

The mid-season rookie draft will be held in the AFL about round 10 in 2019 with clubs able to select players overlooked in drafts or those previously on a club list who choose to renominate for the rookie draft.

A memo sent to clubs has informed them of the change, with the AFL also set to allow clubs to add a player to their rookie list during the pre-season if they have a spot available or if they lose a player to a long-term injury or retirement.

Under that clause clubs will be able to add a new player to the rookie list between December 1 and March 15 by placing a player on one of three inactive lists: a long-term injury list, a season-ending list or a retired player list.

The mid-season rookie draft will only be available to clubs that have a spare rookie position available.

They can then add a rookie player from that draft. The club has that player for the remainder of the year and has first rights to them at the end of the season.

To be picked up as a rookie, a player has to have been through a national draft previously and nominate for the mid-season draft.

The draft is a compromise that meets some of the concerns of state leagues that players such as Geelong's Tim Kelly, who was a roaring success in his first season, and Collingwood's Brody Mihocek might have struggled to perform as well if they were parachuted into the AFL mid-season.

If the rule had been in place this season, Collingwood's Tyson Goldsack may have been placed on the season-ending list and replaced with a rookie player, making his finals return impossible.

However it would also have allowed Carlton to find a replacement for Sam Docherty, who suffered a season-ending injury in the pre-season.

On the flip side, had there been a rookie draft in place this year, clubs with a bad run of injuries such as West Coast, GWS or Collingwood could have gone to the rookie draft looking for replacements.

It would be likely that a player like Werribee’s Sam Collins could have been picked up to play if he had chosen to nominate and considered it in his interests to do so.

Similarly Mitch Brown was a star in the amateurs for St Kevin's and could have been sought as a proven talent able to fill a role for the year.

However players that nominated for the mid-season rookie draft would be available to lower placed clubs first.

A player who might be starring in their state league and available for the mid-season draft might decide not to nominate however, preferring to wait until the end of the season for the November national draft.

How to handle the contract implications for players at state league clubs is still to be clarified.

Why not just let anyone nominate? Stupid rule. Plenty of guys who'd be tearing up a state league next year that haven't ever nominated for a national draft.

With the injury to Rancey, we should have a chance to pick someone up in the mid draft. What do you think we need and who might be available ?

We've got until round 10 to look around as the midseason draft is on May 27.

If Garth or Balta don't work out as Rance's replacement then of course we'll need to chase a key defender from the state leagues. If either can fill the role in our back six then I would add to our midfield depth. Find the next early-mid 20s later developer as we did with Lambert.

Lachlan Delahunty (Subiaco) if we want to go the mature route whichwe probably should, though he's listed as a utility.. :shh

Harry Nolan if we want anorther kid. :shh :shh

If the kids stand up then get another mid. M.Grigg, Lentini ,Templeton, Pickett, Meadows, Smallwood, Nelson Scharenberg.... :shh :shh :shh

EDIT: actually even if the kids do stand up we probably still need KPD depth to cover injuries... :shh :shh :shh :shh

Collingwood key position player Sam McLarty was delisted when Jordan Roughead arrived despite being named emergency seven times last year and with clear upside.

Former Bulldogs rookie Nathan Mullenger-McHugh is a 196cm key position player this year playing at Box Hill.

Former North Melbourne and Geelong key defender Aaron Black — playing for Geelong’s VFL side — is another who clubs are again scrutinising.

As a delisted player Goddard would still be eligible, even if retired players like Cyril Rioli — who had a year on his contract — have to be retired for a year to come back through the mid-year draft.

RICHMOND

Mid-season availabilities:
One (Alex Rance, ACL)
What they need: A versatile tall
Filled to March 15: Mav Weller (Remaining spot from Rookie Draft), Sydney Stack (Remaining spot from Rookie Draft)

The Tigers have some things to think about, with champion defender Alex Rance (knee) out for the season and Shaun Grigg (knee) and Jayden Short (elbow) on the shelf indefinitely. They played in round four without Ryan Garthwaite, so they seem to be comfortable with their defensive mix. Having said that, a key-position player who could play at either end and provide support for Toby Nankervis could appeal. Noah Balta is filling that position at the moment, but Richmond could look for a more readymade option.

McLarty
Talia
Delahunty

If we go ruck:

Blair
Knoll

If we go mid:

Lentini
Bolton'
Pickett
Nelson
M.Grigg

If we just go for talent over need:

Smallwood :shh

Or we could just bring back the Beanie... :clapping :clapping :clapping

If Short is still on the LTIL by round 10 along with Rance then I think we will get two picks in the mid-season draft.

The Tigers used the new pre-season supplemental selection period to fill the last two spots on their list with WA youngster Sydney Stack and delisted Saint Mav Weller.

It leaves them and the rest of the competition with less than six weeks to scour the country for potential reinforcements at the mid-season draft.

“There’s always other injuries and all sorts of things can happen. We’re approaching it with a view that we’ll have some sort of opportunity (to take someone), but you never know,” Balme said.

“We’ve obviously discussed it. We haven’t made any decisions on it.”

Sydney, Carlton, Gold Coast and Richmond have shown interest in Gippsland Power's Kyle Dunkley (brother of Josh at the Dogs), whose father Andrew was a stout defender for the Swans across 217 matches.

11    Kyle    Dunkley    20-Jun-00    185    84    Gippsland Power

#11 Kyle Dunkley
Providing strong support on the inside for Gippsland and laid a number of big tackles on opponents throughout the match. His kicking can be hit or miss at times, with his long, penetrating kick more effective than trying to find targets at short range. Dunkley unloaded a long-bomb from well outside 50m and put it straight through the middle, and when inside 50 provides leads and is good in the air or ground level.

#11 Kyle Dunkley
After the disappointment of not getting drafted last year, the brother of Josh has switched from Oakleigh to Gippsland during the offseason and could not have started the season in much better form. He joined Serong and Flanders at the first centre bounce and inserted his physical presence immediately with great attack at the footy. Based purely on his conditioning and ripped stature, Dunkley looks to have worked extremely hard over the off season and his running appears to have benefitted as he constantly pushes from arc to arc. He also spent time forward and finished with another good haul of 23 disposals.

#11 Kyle Dunkley
Dunkley was a tough customer through the midfield attacking he ball hard and tackled like a man possessed. His only goal would come from a mark and set shot in the 2nd quarter but his hard work set up plenty of others, he showed good vision under pressure to hit a nice switch kick in the 3rd quarter and later that quarter would lay a bone crunching tackle. Dunkley would finish the game with 18 disposals, 6 marks, 11 tackles and 1 goal.

Kyle Dunkley (Gippsland Power)
Dunkley looked best inside the contest using his quick and clean hands at stoppages to release to his running teammates and he did well doing the bulk of the contested work through the midfield. It was not a prolific day stats wise for Dunkley but he would add a nice goal to his name with a long bomb from 50 meters.

WAFL STAR STILL ON RADAR

Dual Sandover medallist Jye Bolton continues to rack up massive numbers in the WAFL ahead of the AFL’s mid-season draft.

The 27-year-old former Collingwood rookie has long been on recruiters’ radars and has once again nominated for the May 27 draft.

After winning the league best and fairest in 2016 and 2018, he has ran hot over the first four rounds of the new season, averaging 35 disposals, 15 contested possessions and seven clearances a game.

One recruiter said he was “probably still the best WAFL prospect”, along with former Kangaroo Declan Mountford and ex Gold Coast Sun Kane Mitchell.

The young guns pushing their case for a mid-season draft lifeline

May 8, 2019
Matt Balme
FOX SPORTS

How 18 AFL clubs will approach the mid-season draft is completely fascinating.

And with less than three weeks until the inaugural draft, clubs are working the phones and making contact with potential recruits, ahead of an AFL run medical test on May 22.

More than 300 players nominated for the draft, which will be held on the night of Monday May 27.

Will clubs go for experienced players to fill holes on their lists? Or will they look to draft an overlooked young gun who can kickstart his development in an AFL program, before a potential deal for 2020 and beyond?

Foxfooty.com.au looks at 11 youngsters who could take the fancy of the AFL clubs ahead of the mid-season draft.

JACOB ATLEY (VICTORIA)

The brother of AFL-listed players Joe (Port Adelaide) and Shaun (North Melbourne) was overlooked for the draft in 2018, with the Vic Country onballer signing with Essendon’s VFL team for this season. Atley is yet to make his VFL debut, but has played two NAB League matches for the Bendigo Pioneers. Standing at 191cm, Atley has the ability to spread from the contest and accumulate the ball around the ground. He averaged 17.1 disposals and 5.6 marks in 14 appearances for the Pioneers in his draft year. Atley turns 19 in July.

KYLE DUNKLEY (VICTORIA)

The brother of Western Bulldogs player Josh, was overlooked last season and returned to NAB League competition with Gippsland Power. Dunkley has had a strong overage year for the Gippsland Power, playing four matches and averaging 18.5 disposals. He spent most of 2018 at school level, but his inside work at NAB League has been impressive where he regularly is one of the Power’s biggest ball winners. The Swans had the chance to select Dunkley last year as a father-son prospect, but elected to overlook him.

ANGUS HANRAHAN (VICTORIA)

The brother of Hawthorn listed player Ollie, is a player with plenty of upside for a club looking to fast-track the development of a young gun. Hanrahan played for Vic Metro in 2018 Under 18 Championships, but was overlooked in the draft. The lively outside type can play at either end and has shown his ability to hit the scoreboard consistently. For the Sandringham Dragons in 2019, Hanrahan has lifted his output from an average of 15.6 disposals in 2018 to 20.2 disposals this season. He is also averaging just under four inside 50s per game and has booted seven goals.

CODY HIRST (VICTORIA)

Injuries have held Hirst back in the last 24 months and would’ve played a part in why he was overlooked in the 2018 national draft. But Hirst has taken his draft snub on the chin, working extremely hard in his overage year for Eastern Ranges in the NAB League. Hirst can play across half back and through the midfield, with Hirst having averaged 22 disposals and 4.8 tackles in four NAB League matches for 2019. The 19-year-old is agile around stoppages and was part of the initial Vic Metro squad.

TRISTAN HOBLEY (WESTERN AUSTRALIA)

The Subiaco ball-magnet was best on ground in the WAFL Colts Grand Final for 2018, but was overlooked entirely when the draft rolled around. Hobley is part of the Western Australia Under 18 hub and has been named as an overager in their squad for the upcoming Under 18 Championships. The 182cm onballer has averaged 32.7 disposals and 7.0 tackles in three WAFL Colts appearances for 2019.

WILL KENNEDY (VICTORIA)

The mobile tall moved from Sandringham Dragons to Western Jets in the off-season and has been a strong performer in the NAB League this season. Kennedy covers the ground well and can leap high above his opponents. He has averaged 31.2 hitouts in the NAB League this season, also averaging 16.6 disposals and 4.6 marks. If a club is looking to take a young developing ruckman, Kennedy might just be the best available youngster in the mid-season draft. Could Essendon be a club that need a young developing ruckman?

MIHAIL LOCHOWIAK (SOUTH AUSTRALIA)

The dashing 19-year-old was overlooked in 2018 after winning the running vertical jump at the South Australia state combine. In the SANFL Reserves this season, Lochowiak has been utilised in the attacking half of the ground, booting 13 goals from six matches. The 186cm player can be used as a utility, averaging 13.7 disposals at 66 per cent efficiency. He has an attacking state of frame, averaging 3.5 tackles and booted a bag of five goals against Glenelg in Round 4. His brother Anzac, is eligible for the 2019 draft. Lochowiak could suit a club like Gold Coast or Carlton, looking for a goalkicking forward.

HUGO MUNN (SOUTH AUSTRALIA)

The AFL Academy member wasn’t drafted in 2018 despite spending time in the Sturt SANFL League team. The 197cm tall can play at either end of the ground and played 10 games in the SANFL League in his draft year, booting seven goals. In 2019, he has mixed between the Reserves and League competition, booting four goals in the Reserves to start the season before pushing into the senior team. Munn is mobile and also competes well in the ruck and can spread to mark the ball around the ground. He would be a player a club would look to develop, as he wouldn’t play AFL football this season.

DILLON O’REILLY (WESTERN AUSTRALIA)

The East Fremantle tall’s father Stephen played 98 games for the Dockers, therefore meaning Dillon fell two games short of father-son status. But nevertheless the tall has shown signs to suggest he could be worth a punt on as a development player, with O’Reilly having played WAFL League football. His best performance on 2018 came in the WAFL Colts Elimination Final where he booted six goals from 19 touches, clunking nine marks. O’Reilly has done most of his work up forward, but has at times shown his ability down back.

JAKE RICCARDI (VICTORIA)

Riccardi has been a consistent member of the Werribee VFL line-up in 2019, excelling right across the ground. The 194cm tall turns 20 in November and might have an advantage on other young talls that nominated for the mid-season draft, given his experience at VFL level against AFL listed players. Riccardi was part of the Calder Cannons program over the last two seasons, showing off his aerial ability at centre half back in 2018, averaging 6.2 marks. Up forward, Riccardi has booted eight goals in four VFL games this year, including three against Geelong last month. His mobility and athleticism is what will make him appealing to clubs.

MITCH RIORDAN (VICTORIA)

The Dandenong Stingrays premiership player was a surprise player overlooked for the 2018 draft, but continues to push his case at NAB League level as he hunts an opportunity to join an AFL list. The midfielder has averaging a career-best season in the elite underage competition, averaging 17.5 disposals with a 50 per cent contested possession rate. He has shown his tenacity, averaging five tackles per game as he hunts a chance on an AFL list. Riordan stands at 187cm and has shown off his speed as he bursts away from stoppages, with the 19-year-old invited to the state combine in 2018.

Title: Tigers join chase for VFL gun Sam Lowson in Mid-Season Draft (Herald-Sun)

Tigers join chase for VFL gun Lowson

JON RALPH,
Herald Sun
May 9, 2019

Richmond has joined the chase for lightning quick VFL forward Sam Lowson, with his VFL coach backing him to make an impact in the AFL this year.

Lowson had a handful of AFL clubs watching him live on the weekend and is set to meet with Richmond, Carlton and North Melbourne ahead of May 27’s mid-season draft.

Coburg coach Leigh Adams, who retired from concussion after 104 AFL games, said Lowson’s breakneck pace would rival any player currently in the AFL system.

He is hopeful the young star is drafted by a club to give him a chance in an elite system after he was promoted through Coburg’s pathways after playing with East Ringwood.

The 23-year-old has kicked 14 goals this year, the most in the VFL, with Adams adamant he has a well-rounded game suited to AFL.

“He has had a ripping start to the season and has just some got some real AFL traits. His speed is phenomenal. I saw a story in the Herald Sun talking about the top five GPS speeds and I reckon his speed would be in the top five. He is a really tough match-up. If you play a small on him he gets them in the air and if you get a tall on him he gets them on the ground.

“He is a dual threat and I think if he gets the opportunity he will be comfortable playing AFL footy.

“I could see him slotting into an AFL team and having an impact because he can kick goals and put on forward pressure. That’s what AFL clubs want these days.”

Richmond currently has a pick in the top 10 of the mid-season draft, with clubs still considering whether to take picks.

Hawthorn football boss Graham Wright said yesterday the Hawks weren’t sure whether to take advantage of Tim Mohr’s long-term injury by taking a selection.

He said with clubs mining the VFL and other state leagues in recent years the Hawks weren’t sure how many standout selections would be available.

But it is a virtual free hit for clubs with a retirement or long-term injury because they can retain a player on their list if he performs in the back half of the year.

Carlton’s Michael Gibbons has turned into one of footy’s best runners since entering an elite system and Adams believes carpenter Lowson would also thrive in a 24/7 football environment.

“He is on site at 7am and can finish at 3pm or 3.30pm and could be working all over Melbourne,” he said.

“He can come straight to Coburg by 5pm and train for two and a half hours and get home at 9.30pm and be up by 5am again. It’s a tough ask for these guys but it makes them a lot more well-prepared if they get drafted. It’s an easier transition.”

Richmond is the club linked strongest to South Fremantle's Marlion Pickett.

Kyle Dunkley is the son of former Sydney defender Andrew and brother of Western Bulldogs premiership player Josh and is being monitored by Sydney, Carlton, Gold Coast and Richmond.

Clubs with one availability include Adelaide, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Richmond, Sydney and Western Bulldogs.

Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney both have two positions open to be filled.

There seems to be conflicting reports...we had no spots left after we signed Stack & Weller but various media outlets are saying we are one of the clubs eligible for a mid-season draft pick even though nothing seems to have been officially announced regarding movement of players onto the LTI yet (and by the way the club's been talking Rance won't be)....but I'd say if we've already had Lowson in for a medical then we are planning to free a spot up somehow.....wouldn't be suprised if Grigg retires... :shh

one thing ive always been big on is mature age recruits who dominate in the lower leagues.Pickett actually has all the physical attributes to succeed at afl level, you know the basic boxes all afl players should tick. This bloke has shown consistently that he is among the better players going around in his state league and regularly beats afl listed players in the league.

Personally im hoping we can find a bigger bodied hard nosed quick inside mid from somewhere.

SuperFooty’s ultimate club by club mid-season draft guide

JON RALPH
Herald-Sun
14 May 2019

RICHMOND

Following Shaun Grigg’s retirement, the Tigers have one list spot available. Meanwhile, Alex Rance’s determination to get back after his ACL rupture means he won’t be going onto the long term injury list.

WHAT THEY’VE LOST: The Tigers would love another star ruckman but it probably won’t happen this year. Toby Nankervis is out for 6-8 weeks with a groin strain, but will be replaced by Ivan Soldo.

WHAT THEY NEED: Richmond’s list is evenly balanced, with a host of fast kids, some key position back-up in Callum Moore and Ryan Garthwaite and some flankers like Patrick Naish pushing for a game.

WHO THEY TARGET:
The Tigers have interviewed Coburg’s Sam Lowson, a talented goalsneak. So they must be considering whether to put another player on their list. You would think the Tigers don’t need another small forward but they just want players with talent, then turn them into the player they need. Their recruiting of Sydney Stack, a talented mid/half forward, who they threw into a half back role shows how they do business.

He was at punt road late last week undertaking a medical and having an interview but will not be available when it's our pick. A type of player we have plenty of but he is best available.

In-demand Coburg small forward Sam Lowson has been interviewed by Richmond, but so have a host of clubs including Carlton, who will almost certainly have the first pick.

South Adelaide's Michael Knoll and East Perth's Ajang Ajang have attracted attention as state league ruckman, but once again Richmond will be towards the back of the queue, behind the likes of Essendon who are also in desperate need of ruck support.

Other ruckmen that clubs have shown interest in include North Adelaide's Jack Blair, Coburg's soccer convert Adam Swierzbiolek and athletic Claremont big man Oliver Eastland.

Hmmm turns out there's a few that haven't nominated that I thought would have - Delahunty, Talia, Jonty Scharenberg. Sam Nelson, M.Grigg... of the KPD's available I'd probably go McLarty as the safest bet, Kelly for potential/risk/reward,  pace and the fact that he can also ruck or if we're desperate Jacksh for AFL "experience" and abilty to also swing forward .... :shh

Reckon Pickett & Bolton will probably be gone by our pick....word is Carlton will jump on Lowson(good)....for contending clubs like ours the mid-season draft should really just be about this year and covering injuries with ready-to-go experienced players ...so bearing all that in mind and looking at the list of nominees and the names I recognise....first pick Jesse Lonergan, second pick McClarty or Jacksch if McClarty is gone... :shh

Apparently several clubs are looking at Michael Knoll from South Adelaide but besides him there's really only Jake Spencer that I can see....personally I like the sound of Ben Kelly - can play ruck & kpd so covers two needs- 200cm & lightning quick according to reports -probably too young & raw to make an immediate impact though...would take at him with a mid range or later pick in the end of year draft if he doesn't get picked up in the mid-season draft... :shh

200cm and lightning quick. Perfect get in mid season draft. Strike now on someone we could take in this year's draft.

Don't think we urgently need any immediate replacement as the kids are all showing something with still more to debut. We have kept Soldo for long enough and he appears ready. We will find out if he has improved further. CCJ is looking solid and further development as NO 1 ruck in the VFL as Soldo's replacement will be beneficial
Title: Re: Mid Year Draft 2019
Post by: Diocletian on May 16, 2019, 05:36:17 PM
Agree the more pressing need is for inside mids and kpds than it is ruckman - don't rate Soldo but he just needs to be serviceable and not be a liabilty around the ground...he fails we blood CCJ or give Chol -who should be getting more ruck time in the VFL now with Soldo likely to be called up first- an extended look....

If we go pure talent & potebtial then it's Tyron Smallwood & Kelly for me...and tbh, despite what I wrote earlier  I have far more faith in our current recruiters picking up a good kid than a good recycled or older player with late or second chance picks....with the former they delivered Stack, Turner & last year Baker...with the latter they delivered Maverick Weller.... :shh

Essendon met with 27-year-old South Fremantle star Marlion Pickett in recent weeks, although Pickett’s chances of being drafted took a hit on Saturday when he re-broke his troublesome finger. Pickett has undergone surgery and is expected to be unavailable for 8-10 weeks.

Richmond have also shown interest in Pickett. The Tigers have a pick on Monday night following the mid-season retirement of Shaun Grigg. The Tigers have shown interest in Northern Blues midfielder Frank Anderson, and have been linked to [Eastern Ranges overager] Cody Hirst.

Fox Footy's draft expert has us passing but considering Grigg just retired to make room and pretty much said so himself, can't see that happening, .....reckon we'll only take one player though....won't put Rance on the LTI, someone suggested Short or Moore might be but surely we would've heard by now if their injuries were season ending... :shh :shh

The Herald-Sun reckons we'll pass unless someone we're keen on falls through to our pick 13.

FULL PHANTOM DRAFT

PICK 1 - Carlton - Josh Deluca
PICK 2 - Gold Coast Suns - Kyle Dunkley
PICK 3 - Melbourne - Sam Lowson
PICK 4 - Sydney Swans - Cody Hirst
PICK 5 - North Melbourne - Lochie Dickson
PICK 6 - Western Bulldogs - Ryan Gardner
PICK 7 - Essendon - Michael Knoll
PICK 8 - St Kilda - Frank Anderson
PICK 9 - Port Adelaide - Pass
PICK 10 - Hawthorn - Mitch Riordan
PICK 11 - Fremantle - Jarvis Pina
PICK 12 - Adelaide - Pass

PICK 13 - Richmond - Pass
Two names that continue to come up in discussions about Richmond’s pick are Frank Anderson and Marlion Pickett.
But it’s understood the Tigers would be comfortable not selecting in the mid-season draft if a player didn’t catch their eye, given the success of Sydney Stack this year. Do they have a draft smoky up their sleeve?

PICK 14 - GWS - Pass
PICK 15 - Collingwood - Pass

All remaining selections by clubs are likely to be passed.
