Title: Injury update
Post by: one-eyed on November 04, 2018, 04:41:17 PM
Injury list:

Jack Graham is facing a delayed start to pre-season after an October shoulder reconstruction. He'll start running when the players return but won't engage in contract drills until the New Year.

Others to undergo minor operations include Jack Riewoldt (shoulder), Josh Caddy (ankle), Dylan Grimes (finger), Ryan Garthwaite (ankle) and Ben Miller (hip).

Tom Lynch has been tentatively pencilled in to start pre-season on time with plans for him to commence running in November after July knee surgery.

Injury list - Feb 11

Jason Castagna: Going well in his recovery from a high ankle sprain that saw him wearing a moonboot on the club's training camp. Completing running drills away from the main group,  and the club is pleased with how he is progressing. About a week away from returning to full training.

Ryan Garthwaite: Has had a niggling Achilles issue which has impacted his pre-season somewhat. Slowly recovering, is running well but rotating in and out of the main group.

Jack Graham: Nearly back to full training after a left shoulder reconstruction post-season. Doing everything except for select contact drills and is training without strapping on the affected area.

Dylan Grimes: Suffered an unfortunate broken nose at training three weeks ago. Has not affected his training much at all, except for the addition of an interesting protective mask over his face, which he is still wearing.

Tom Lynch: Slowly but surely progressing after surgery on his right PCL and a subsequent clean-up surgery for scar tissue. Club is taking things cautiously with the star recruit. Still doing running drills on the side on occasion, but also joining in with the main training group and moving well.

Jacob Townsend:
Has recovered from a fractured lower fibula/ankle which ruled him out of Richmond's finals campaign, but is not quite at full training due to some thigh soreness.

RICHMOND

Player            Injury   Estimated Return
 Josh Caddy     Ankle     2-3 week
 Jason Castagna     Ankle     1 week
 Ryan Garthwaite     Achilles     TBC
 Jack Graham     Shoulder     Available
 Tom Lynch     PCL     TBC
 Jacob Townsend     Thigh     TBC

Early prognosis

A few lingering injuries rather than serious long-term issues for Richmond. Graham is back in contact training and should be right for round one against Carlton, while Caddy is in a similar boat, on light duties for a few weeks with a sore ankle. Castagna is another one who should be in the selection frame next month. Reports have said Lynch is unlikely to play JLT matches but is still in contention for round one. Garthwaite and Townsend have been dealing with niggling issues, moving in and out of the main training group and are on the fringes of Richmond's best 22 regardless.

 Tom Lynch            PCL     2-5 weeks
 Jacob Townsend   Thigh     1-3 weeks

Updated: Tuesday, March 5

Early prognosis

A few changes in Richmond's injury list, with Caddy now looking highly unlikely to play round one as he battles an ankle complaint. Star recruit Lynch will also be racing against the clock, with the club having erred on the side of caution with his rehab this summer. Premiership "ruckman" and winger Grigg has had problems with his knee and has been ruled out until at least round three. It's a structural issue in his knee that's causing problems with kicking, rather than running. Castagna, Garthwaite and Townsend remain on track for selection in rounds one or two.

Early prognosis

There'll be a handful of Tigers racing the clock for round one selection, with Lynch and Castagna the first-choice players most under the pump. Grimes and Vlastuin picked up minor injuries in the second JLT match but should be right for round one. Grigg remains some way back, starting to build his training loads after being sidelined with a joint issue in his knee. - Sarah Black

Peter Burge's update:

Tom Lynch, PCL

"Tom’s been full-training with the group now for probably nearly two weeks. He’s been in the skills program now for about five or six weeks. He’s going fantastically well, even in the session yesterday he looked pretty good. It’s a long-term injury so we’re obviously taking a very measured approach but he is getting closer. That’s going to be a decision between the medical, coaching and fitness team but hopefully over the next week we’ll be able to enlighten some people with that news."

Josh Caddy, ankle

"Josh has resumed running and he’s feeling really good. He missed nearly three weeks where he wasn’t able to do any running, so we probably have to extend the timeframe a little bit with reconditioning and then back into the football program, so he’s probably about a week away from resuming some skill work and then we have to make an assessment about what that looks like with match play."

Jason Castagna, ankle

"George has been back in full skills now for two weeks. We’re looking next week at playing some game time, most likely through the VFL. He’s ready for some game time next week."

Shaun Grigg, knee

"Grigga’s injury has been a little bit vague. We've had a little bit of progress this week. He’s had four or five scans in the last couple of weeks to work out what the program is and we seem to have narrowed it down. He’s had some treatment this week which he responded really well to. He’s been running for the last five weeks or so but we just haven’t been able to train at a high intensity. But we think now in the next week we might be able to progress that."

Ryan Garthwaite, Achilles

"Garthy missed quite a bit of pre-season football training, he’s been conditioning for a while, he had an Achilles tendonitis issue which is resolved now. He’s been training with the main group for three to four weeks, and we’ll probably see him play some game time next week through the VFL which is exciting for him but we’ll take a cautious approach over those first couple of weeks with his game time and build him up slowly."

Jacob Townsend, thigh

"Jacob has had an interrupted preparation. He had a little bit of participation with the group before Christmas, so he had that interruption January/February with the stress reaction in his femur but he’s been training with the main group for about two to three weeks now, he’ll play some game time through the VFL next week, he’s excited about that."

He hasn't been happy with the ankle. Doctors are only considering further surgery even if he is training lightly. That is why he is "indefinite". No decision has been made yet.

Injured Tiger Caddy reveals likely return date

SEN
26 March 2019

Richmond forward Josh Caddy expects to shake off an ankle problem and return to football via the VFL in two weeks time.

Caddy, 26, has been on light duties after experiencing ankle soreness in February and subsequently missed both the Tigers’ JLT matches and the Round 1 win over Carlton.

“I’ve actually had a bit of bone stress in the tibia,” he told the AFL Nation pre-game show.

“I’ve had to stay off legs for a couple of weeks and therefore I’ve had to slowly ramp things back up again because I didn’t run for a few weeks.

“I’m back running around at training now but it’s just a matter of ticking all the boxes, so I don’t come back and do a hamstring or anything like that.

“I’m hoping to play the week of Round 3 and it will probably be at VFL level.”

 Josh Caddy    Ankle            1-3 weeks
 Shaun Grigg    Knee            Indefinite
 Ben Miller     Appendicitis    1-3 weeks
 Alex Rance    Knee            Season

Updated: Tuesday, March 26

Early prognosis:
The biggest addition to Richmond's short injury list is five-time All Australian Rance, who ruptured his ACL in round one. Caddy is slowly getting closer to a return but didn't play any pre-season matches. He is building his running loads and training with the main group. Grigg is a way off, while young defender Miller will miss a few weeks with appendicitis. Jason Castagna (ankle), Ryan Garthwaite (Achilles) and Jacob Townsend (thigh) returned through the VFL last week. - Sarah Black

Peter Burge's injury update:

Josh Caddy, ankle

“Josh is going really well, he’s been back training with the group now for a week. We’ll look at him playing some game time this weekend, whether that’s AFL or VFL, we’ll make that call later in the week. But he’s been really good. Initially he had those three weeks off where he didn’t run at all, so it’s been a slow progression, but the last couple of weeks has been really promising and we look forward to seeing him play this weekend.”

Bachar Houli, hamstring

“Bachar in round one just pulled up a little sore from an incident late in the game. We thought it may have been a cramp but we had some scans done and he had a very minor hamstring strain. So he missed last week and he’s progressing slowly but it’s not moving as quickly as we’d like, so he’s probably going to miss this week as well. We’ll be more confident going into full training next week and hopefully for the Port Adelaide game he’ll be back. Given Bachar’s recent history, he had a couple of niggles last year, we just want to make sure that when he comes back he’ll be right to go."

Jack Riewoldt, wrist

"We saw Jack have that (round two) incident where he went for a mark and then he fell on his hand. He’s got a little fracture in the bottom of his wrist and a little bit of ligament damage. It’s really just time that we need with this. The doctor said around four weeks, so we hope he’s a quick healer and it’s sooner than that, but at the moment it’s just time. He’ll do a bit of running and general conditioning, but he won’t be marking or jumping at any footys certainly this week."

Alex Rance, knee

"The surgery went fantastically well. He hasn’t got a lot of swelling, and he can straighten his leg already which is a really good sign. Alex will gradually get into a low level exercise program, just getting movement back into his knee. He’s hobbling round a little bit at the moment. Knowing Alex, he’ll recover quicker than others but we’ll be very careful in his rehab and obviously we’re looking ahead to next year so we’ve got time on our side and round one next year, we’ll see him out there."

Shaun Grigg, knee

"We’ve had some real progress in the last week or two, he’s now started to kick the footy again and run a little bit quicker. Probably the next one to two weeks, we’ll up the intensity and see where we’re at. Hopefully we can get a return to skills really soon and get him back into some full training and from there, we can try give an exact timeline of when he’ll play again."

RICHMOND captain Trent Cotchin will be sidelined for up to three weeks with a left hamstring strain, while teammate Jayden Short is expected to be out for at least two months.

Short dislocated his right elbow in the opening minutes of the 49-point loss to Greater Western Sydney and has damaged ligaments in his arm.

He requires a consultation with a surgeon, with a clearer timeframe to be decided after that.

"We're obviously disappointed to lose Trent and Jayden to injury for a period of time, both players will go through their rehab and recovery processes, and we look forward to getting them both back in due course," Richmond general manager of football Neil Balme said.

"Fortunately, we expect to bolster the team with some players to return from injuries, as we as Dylan Grimes (suspension) available for selection."

Forward Josh Caddy played 70 per cent game time in the VFL on Friday night in his return from an ankle injury, while running back Bachar Houli has been listed as "probable" by the club after missing two weeks with a hamstring strain.

Small forwards Mav Weller (leg) and Jake Aarts (corked calf) both missed the VFL match and are touch and go to play this weekend.

Three-time Coleman medallist Jack Riewoldt is at least two weeks away (wrist), while experienced mid Shaun Grigg (knee) is still quite some way off.

Five-time All Australian key back Alex Rance is out for the year with a torn ACL.

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge's injury update:

Jack Riewoldt, PCL

“The ‘doc’ examined him during the game (Anzac Eve v Melbourne) and post-game he told us that it’s probably going to be a six-eight-week injury, a PCL strain. It was as expected after his scans . . . We did see the surgeon and got an opinion, but based on his scans he doesn’t need surgery. So now he’ll go into a rehab program and be off legs for the first couple of weeks. We just want that ligament to strengthen up and we need to work on his quad strength. In the short term he won’t be doing too much, and then we’ll slowly progress his running and make sure he’s strong . . . We’ll probably look to after the bye as a realistic return.”

David Astbury, rolled ankle

“He’s pulled up quite well. He was certainly bruised and swollen after the (Anzac Eve) game. Dave is the ultimate professional. He had the foot in a bucket straight after the game and I dare say for the next 48 hours he was doing that. But he’s come in today walking around and jogged down the hallway. So he’ll do a little bit of running tomorrow and will aim to fully train on Thursday. We’ll make an assessment from there if he’s ready to play.”

Trent Cotchin, hamstring - See Cotchin thread.

Shaun Grigg, hip

“Currently with Shaun we’re dealing with the hip issue and we’re looking at different avenues of how to progress that and get to a level where he can increase his intensity in training. But it’s not going to be short term. We’re probably looking still at the long term . . .”

Jack Graham, hamstring

“Jack, warming up for the game (VFL last Saturday v Casey), was doing some stoppage work and  noticed something in his hamstring after picking up a ground ball. He didn’t think too much of it and then started the game. But within five minutes he wasn’t comfortable running at top speed. It certainly wasn’t anything dramatic or a serious injury, but we just took the safe option to bring him off and wrap him up at that time. Jack will certainly miss this week. Like with all our other soft-tissue injuries, we’ve just got to take a safe approach and put him through the rehab process and get him back training at intensity until he’ll play again.”

Mav Weller, back

“Mav had a back issue. He withdrew from the (VFL) game at half-time. It’s something he has managed in the past. He got a knock during the game and then it just started to seize up at half-time and he flagged with us that he wouldn’t be able to complete the game. I anticipate he’d settle down and be a probable for this week. We’ll assess him at Thursday training and see how he feels. But at this stage, I think he’s looking fairly good to play again this week.”

Oleg Markov, knee

“Oleg had minor surgery two weeks ago to explore through the knee, the lateral meniscus. He had a little bit of a clean-up there and he’s responded extremely well. He’s already running and changing direction. He’ll do a little bit of training later this week and we’re looking for a return to play next week, which is a little quicker than we expected . . .”

RICHMOND

Coach Damien Hardwick was never going to admit Richmond was at breaking point, but it’s pretty clear the injuries are taking their toll.

Undisputed locks missing from the Tigers’ best 22 are Trent Cotchin (hamstring), Jack Riewoldt (knee), Alex Rance (knee), David Astbury (ankle) and Jayden Short (elbow).

And adding salt to the wounds of a 47-point loss to Western Bulldogs on Saturday night was two more players finding themselves in the hands of doctors and in some doubt for Round 8.

Defender Nick Vlastuin played on after hurting his ankle, but Hardwick said he was only “probable” to take on Fremantle next weekend given the severity.

Forward Daniel Rioli also played on after being crunched in a marking contest, Hardwick saying he was a “bit bruised and battered” after the game.

The good news is that key defender Astbury — sorely missed against the Bulldogs — should return from an ankle injury against the Dockers.

Captain Trent Cotchin is at least another two weeks away.

The Tigers have been brave to win three of their past four matches given the names missing, but their uphill battle only looks set to continue for the time being.

Early prognosis

Richmond's ever-growing injury list has seen classy forward Rioli and integral intercept defender Vlastuin join its ranks, with the club still to confirm the time frame for the pair. Rioli has been battered from pillar to post over the past few weeks, suffering a number of corkies to his thigh and then copping a knock to the ribs against the Dogs. Vlastuin's rolled ankle doesn't appear to be to severe, while fellow back Astbury is a test to return for the trip across to play Fremantle.

Half-back flanker Oleg Markov is also set to return to football at some level, having recovered nearly a month faster than expected from surgery on a torn meniscus in his knee.

However, in bad news for the injury-hit club, yet another player has joined the rehab group after Callum Moore badly injured his ankle in the VFL's win over Williamstown on Sunday.

Moore is set for an extended period on the sidelines, with the club rating the injury, a small fracture as well as ligament and tendon damage, as requiring a "medium-to-long-term" recovery.

There is no exact time-frame yet as the 22-year-old needs to meet with a specialist to see if surgery is required.

Does the news of Moore getting injured for a lengthy period of time spell the end of his career as a Tiger with only a contract for this year?

What are people’s thoughts on him getting another contract?

I personally don’t mind giving a 22 year old KPF another year but too be honest I wouldn’t lose any sleep if he was to be given arse either.
From what I have seen to date, good VFL player, average AFL player.

So after watching the injury update on the clubs website our list is looking something like this:
Rioli: Test
Vlastuin: Test
Graham: 1 week
Cotchin: 2 weeks
Short: 6 weeks
Riewoldt: didn’t get timeframe but said will start jogging in the next couple of weeks
Ross: 6-8 weeks (will be cautious given he’s a first year player)
Nankervis: 6-8 weeks (more likely eight)
Moore: 8-10 weeks
Rance:  :shh

Early prognosis

Despite David Astbury and Oleg Markov now being fully fit, Richmond's injury list stays at 12, with Nankervis and Ross added after suffering serious injuries against Fremantle. Nankervis has torn a muscle and some tendon off the bone, while Ross needs surgery for a syndesmosis injury. Vlastuin and Rioli are likely to play this week while Grigg has officially hung up the boots after persistent knee and hip injuries. Short has only just come out of his elbow brace after dislocating it, while Riewoldt is expected to start jogging possibly at the end of next week. The club is aiming for a round 11 return for skipper Cotchin. - Sarah Black

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge provides an update on the injury status of several members of the Tigers’ playing group.

Toby Nankervis, adductor

“That ruck contest (v Fremantle last Sunday), he actually slipped on the ground and he avulsed his adductor longus muscles. So what that means is he’s actually torn away the muscle and a little bit of tendon off the bone. It’s a longer-term injury, probably more around the eight-week mark . . . There’s going to be some strength work over time and then slowly building his running.”

Jack Ross, syndesmosis

“(Nathan) Fyfe stood on his ankle (v Fremantle last Sunday) and he rotated a little bit as well. Syndesmosis injuries seem to be more common these days. They are an injury that happens when you get tackled . . . He’s having some surgery tomorrow. What they’ll do in that surgery is wrap the tibia and the fibula, similar to what Dan Butler and Kane Lambert had last year. Timeframe-wise we’re thinking it’s going to be somewhere between the six and eight-week mark. Given he’s a first-year player, obviously we’re going to be a little more cautious.”

Daniel Rioli, corked quad

“Daniel will resume training tomorrow and have a full week of training. He’s recovered quite well.”

Nick Vlastuin, rolled ankle

“Nick, with his ankle, hasn’t run yet. He’ll start running tomorrow. We’ve given him plenty of time to settle. His ankle was blown up like a balloon for most of last week . . . We expect him to be fully training on Friday. I’d say he’s a very good chance to play this week (v Hawthorn).”

Callum Moore, ankle

“Cal had surgery last Wednesday. He had a number of things going on from that incident (in the recent VFL match v Williamstown). Pretty much all his ligaments were damaged quite badly. He had a very small fracture in his calcaneus and he also ruptured some soft tissue, which holds the muscles and tendons around his foot. That’s probably the main issue that we needed to repair and he had surgery to fix that. He’s in plaster at the moment. Tomorrow, he’ll come out of that plaster, he’ll be in a boot for four weeks and then from there, as tolerated, we’ll progress walking, jogging, Alter-G, on the treadmill. It’s looking like an eight-10-week injury.”

Jack Graham, hamstring

“Jack is at about 90% speed at the moment . . . I would anticipate he’d miss this week and be available to play next week, provided he fully trains leading into the Essendon game.”

Trent Cotchin, hamstring

“Trent is at the same point, around that 90%, which we said we’d hold for a period of time, given he had a little interruption a few weeks back . . . Right now he is holding that speed and feeling good. We’ll progress that speed over the next week. We’re looking, at this stage, the Kangaroos game, Round 11, as a return. That should give him at least a week, maybe two weeks, of full skills training.”

Jayden Short, elbow

“’Shorty’ is out of the brace now . . . only just come off in the last 24 hours. He’s now doing his physio exercises. Slowly we’re just getting some movement back into his arm. The transition hopefully will be a fairly quick one, but we’re still looking at the first game after the bye, which is five or six weeks away.”

Jack Riewoldt, PCL

“Jack’s tracking really well. His quad strength is really good at the moment. We’re looking to start jogging in the next two weeks, possibly end of next week the way he’s going.”

Alex Rance, ACL

“Alex is progressing brilliantly. He’s doing absolutely everything he can to push us with his rehab . .

Will Richmond's injuries catch up with them?

The Roar
24 May 2019

No club has been harder hit by injuries than Richmond so far in 2019. Will the medical dramas prove to just be a speed bump for a contender? Or will the injury toll take its toll?

With massive names like Alex Rance, Jack Riewoldt, Trent Cotchin and Toby Nankervis all spending long periods on the sideline, it’s incredible that the Tigers have been able to stay above water.

Last year’s minor premiers sit in fifth – just outside the top four on percentage – despite fielding a virtual VFL side on occasion.

But how long will it last?

We brought Roar AFL expert and editor Stirling Coates onto the Game of Codes podcast to have a look at Richmond’s chances over the rest of the season.

RICHMOND

They just keep winning, this mob.

The worrying sign for the rest of the competition is that there’s reinforcements on the way.

Damien Hardwick said skipper Trent Cotchin was “pencilled in” to return from a long hamstring layoff against North Melbourne on Friday night, pending a final green light from the Tigers medicos.

Ivan Soldo will be back from suspension to take on Todd Goldstein, while it was only a corkie that prevented Tom Lynch from finishing the game against Essendon.

The spearhead is also expected to be right to face the Kangas.

Early prognosis

Given the six-day turnaround between games, Richmond has given Lambert another week off to recover from Achilles soreness. Skipper Cotchin is set to make his long-awaited return after initially injuring his hamstring in round three. Pickett joined the Tigers in the NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft and went straight to the injury list after breaking his finger playing for WAFL side South Fremantle. More details have emerged about draftee English's injury; he suffered a broken scapula (shoulder blade) at training.

Richmond have had the 11th worst total injury run which is not bad until the overlay of best 22 was taken into account. Then they moved to the fourth worst.

Indeed if you tried to qualify it further in an utterly subjective way and look at games missed by your club’s best players then the Tigers’ run is arguably worst of all. No one else has missed the number of games from players of the level of Alex Rance, Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin, who are not only in their club’s top ten but top five and among the best players in the entire league.

Oleg Markov - Illness

Toby Nankervis – Groin (medium term)
Callum Moore – Ankle (long term)
Jayden Short – Elbow (medium term)
Jack Riewoldt – Knee (medium term)

Alex Rance – Knee (long term)
Kane Lambert – Achilles (short - medium term)
Marlion Pickett - Finger (long term)

-----------------------------------------------------
Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge's injury update:

Kane Lambert, Achilles

“Kane’s improved this week. He developed a little bit of Achilles tendinopathy after the Fremantle game and then took it into the Hawthorn game and flagged after that game that he was a bit sore. It did stop him from being at his best, running at high speed which is his real strength in the game. So, we took the chance to take him out of footy for a couple of weeks."

Jake Riewoldt, PCL

"Jack’s progressed really well. He spent a week running on the Alter G last week and ran outside for the first time yesterday and his knee is quite stable now and functionally feeling pretty good. We’ll have to go through a mini preparation phase and build the volume of running and then into some speed. (He’ll be back) after the bye, when after the bye, it’s hard to say at this stage but we’ll progress it carefully. We want him to be healthy when he comes back and then he can finish the season."

Trent Cotchin's return

"(He pulled up) really well from his first game back. Trent played 72% game time on Friday night. He hadn’t played for seven weeks and generally after a player has missed that significant amount of time, the first week back we tend to give them a light week. He’ll do a little bit of training this week and obviously play again this Friday night against the Cats."

Oleg Markov, illness

"Oleg has been sick, in the Essendon game (VFL Round 8) he felt sick that day. He played in the game and did quite well but was feeling ordinary. He came in on Monday last week feeling a little bit better but then during the main training on Wednesday he deteriorated and the doctor called us and made a decision that he wouldn’t be playing on the weekend. But he’s much better now, feeling a lot better so he’s got a full week of training ahead and will hopefully play on the weekend."

Jake Aarts, general soreness

"Jake Aarts has had a couple of corkies the last couple of weeks and he had a little bit of 'DOMS' (delayed onset muscle soreness) through his hamstrings last week and we just took the opportunity to give him a rest on the weekend. He’ll fully train this week and be back this weekend."

Luke English, scapula

"He’s had a rough trot recently. A few weeks back he missed a game through illness and then a week later he had an unfortunate incident at training where he fractured his scapula, which is a long-term injury. He’s now back jogging outside, he’s got a bit of discomfort but that will gradually get better over next couple of weeks and he’ll be able to increase his running and conditioning base. We’re still quite a few weeks away but at least he’s back on the track and getting his conditioning base up and hopefully we’ll get some good news soon."

Marlion Pickett, finger

"Marlion started with us late last week and we obviously knew the news around his finger, he had surgery on Saturday a week ago and that’s on top of a pre-season finger injury. We’re getting a bit more information, it’s going to be a longer-term injury but we’ll get a bit more of an exact time frame once he’s seen a specialist but we’re really confident he’s going to play some footy towards the end of the year. He can still run and do a lot of the conditioning and kick the ball. He’ll train separate to the group for a little while, we’ll get him really fit and he’ll hopefully play some football towards the end of the season."

Toby Nankervis, groin

"'Nank' has got a few more boxes to tick in terms of strength in the gym with his groin, but overall, his running and his conditioning, it’s a post-bye scenario for 'Nank'. When that is, I'm not exactly too sure at this stage. But he is going really well and hopefully he’ll do a little bit of training over the break and then we can introduce him back into football at some stage just after the bye."

Jayden Short, elbow

"Jayden is progressing really well. His elbow is going great at the moment and he’ll resume football training over the next week or two. We’re targeting the first game after the bye, probably on reduced minutes, but it’s really exciting as he’s been out for quite a while. Like a lot of our players, after the bye seems to be the scenario at the moment."

Early prognosis

Lambert is still a week or two away with Achilles tendonitis. Short is aiming for a return the week after the bye (round 15), although it will probably be on reduced minutes through the VFL. Nankervis and Riewoldt are also post-bye prospects, although not quite as immediate as Short. Riewoldt has just progressed from running on the weight-bearing Alter-G treadmill to running outside. The club is confident Pickett will play at some stage this season at either VFL or AFL level.

Think Lambert huge chance to get up next week for Adelaide match
Did many run throughs today wearing runners before training started
Went back in got boots on and joined in the Captains Run session
Would assume he would train again on Saturday morning and they assess again on Monday but real chance he plays against Crows
Nank is 3 weeks away
Jack back after the bye
Cal Moore gets moonboot off next week and is probably 4-5 weeks away
Short back training next week with main group

Thanks Jackstar. Appreciate the insight.
Burge's most recent injury update was very ambiguous re Lambert. Sounded like they decided to rest him for two games and he's now right to go and yet here we are with another game missed and various reports circulating that he may miss another. Very disappointing to lose a player of his importance for 4 weeks with minor achilles tendinopathy

Lambert wasn’t seen at closed session yesterday
And was doing straight line running before the gates opened before  training started today
Was running wearing runners and about 70% speed
Had a long chat with Burge and walked inside as the others started training
Came back wearing boots 15 mins later and trained with main group
Looked fit as so no issue with fitness
Would assume trains sat morning at 8am and they asses next Monday and make a decision then
Next week is a Thursday Night game so that may become an issue ?

Early prognosis

Richmond's injury list is now at an equal season-high of 12 players, seven of whom played in the 2017 flag as well as first-choice player Short. Martin and Vlastuin need to get through training this week, while Brandon Ellis (groin) is available. With the bye next week Astbury and Lambert will be held out for at least another match to give them a solid break. Short is now running without his elbow brace. – Sarah Black.

I think we can start asking the question about what our pre season program was like

I'm starting to think it's more than bad luck.

Most of our early season injuries were structural/collision - Rance, Jack, Short & Ross. Moore and English also fit this category. So they are all plain bad luck. The more recent ones over the past month have been more soft tissue injuries.

Injury ladder: How hard your club has been hit?

Jon Ralph,
Herald Sun
13 June 2019

The greatest injury crisis of Damien Hardwick’s tenure has sidelined All-Australians Trent Cotchin and Shane Edwards for Thursday night’s finals-shaping clash with Adelaide.

Five of Richmond’s six best players and eight of their top 13 from last year’s Jack Dyer Medal will miss the clash with the Crows.

Edwards has been ruled out with hamstring tendinitis, with the Tigers adamant Cotchin’s third hamstring episode of the season is only soreness rather than another tear.

The Tigers’ injury plight could eventually influence a risky recall for Alex Rance during finals given their fading premiership hopes.

Of their eight Tigers in the All-Australian squad of 40 last year, Jack Riewoldt, Rance, Kane Lambert, Edwards and Cotchin will miss and Josh Caddy is badly out of form.

Richmond will have to hang tough and hope it can burst up the ladder in a seven-match stretch of games to finish the home-and-away season.

In that stretch they take on contenders West Coast, Brisbane, Collingwood, Port Adelaide and GWS as well as Melbourne and Carlton.

Trent Cotchin will miss the clash against Adelaide with a hamstring problem.

Richmond football boss Neil Balme said the injury was only minor but given Cotchin has twice injured the hamstring this year he had decided against risking it.

“He’s not going to play, he’s sore. It puts a bit more pressure on, but that’s all right,” he said.

“He’s just a bit sore in the hamstring, but it’s not the same. I reckon if he hadn’t have had the problem before, he would have played.

“The fact we’re playing on the Thursday makes it more difficult. If we’d played on Saturday or Sunday (he was a chance), but we won’t take the risk.”

A club whose leaders had seemed bulletproof has lost the fourth-most games from injury to its best 22 this year.

Remarkably, by Friday only four of its players will have taken the field in all 13 games this year — Tom Lynch, Jack Higgins, Kamdyn McIntosh and Dion Prestia.

Edwards had played every game until pulling up sore this week.

The Tigers will have to make a tough call on Rance, hoping to recover from an ACL rupture in 26 weeks to play in a qualifying or elimination final.

Coach Damien Hardwick is adamant the club will consider his claims as he steps up his recovery that has already shown incredible signs in its early stages.

Hardwick said on Friday night he was hoping Jack Riewoldt would be back in Round 16, with David Astbury likely back after next week’s bye.

Kane Lambert (Achilles) and Toby Nankervis (groin) are still some weeks away from returning.

Brisbane and Fremantle have had 14 players take part in every game this year, with St Kilda (13), Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs (both 12) not far behind.

Incredibly, Brisbane has lost just 10 games to injury from its best 22 this year, clearly the best run ahead of the Dogs (39) and Hawthorn (41).

Melbourne has lost 100 games to injury from players in its best 22, with GWS second (72 games) in front of St Kilda (68) and Richmond (67).

Burge's injury update:

Trent Cotchin, general soreness

“Trent’s resumed training in the last week, there’s a very good chance he’ll play this weekend. We’ve still got a couple of sessions to go for the week but at this stage it’s looking really good. Back to the Adelaide game, we really just needed an extra one or two days. He didn’t quite recover as quickly as we’d liked off the Geelong game. But he’s had a week or so of training already. We’ve got two more training sessions this week which Trent needs to complete before we pick our team.”

Shane Edwards, hamstring tendonitis

“Shane has been back training for the last week, he developed hamstring tendinopathy the week leading into the Geelong game, which settled reasonably well, but he pulled up quite sore after the Geelong game. With only the six-day turnaround into Adelaide, he just didn’t have enough days to settle down again. We put him on a strengthening program over the break and he started training again last week and trained on Sunday with us. We’ll have to still manage that during the season, but it’s just getting that irritability down to a level where it’s controlled and then we can manage that and be on top of it.”

David Astbury, hamstring

“Dave was pretty close to playing against Adelaide as well, but with the six-day turnaround, he didn’t quite get there. He’s trained the last week and he’ll be available this weekend.”

Jayden Short, elbow

“Shorty’s been going very well, he did a full contact session with the group on Sunday, so he’ll train this week and then it’ll be up to the coaching staff as to where he plays on the weekend. He’s up and about… it’s good to see him back out there, we missed him around training and it’s good to have him back.”

Kane Lambert, Achilles

“After the Hawthorn game… following on from the Fremantle game… he got quite sore, and during the Hawthorn game, wasn’t able to run at the intensity he would normally run at. So, we put him into a rehab program for the last four weeks and it’s responded really well, he started training with us last Sunday and has pulled up well. With two more sessions left this week, if he completes those, then he’ll be available for selection.”

Jack Riewoldt, knee

“Jack’s progressing really well. He’s currently running close to top speed and doing change of direction, he’s started some jumping as well. He’ll start some drills with the group early next week and then we’ll make an assessment as to what game we’ll target but we’re only a couple of weeks away, we think, from Jack returning to match play.”

Toby Nankervis, adductor tendon

“Toby’s progressing really well. He’s running close to top speed, he’s doing some change of direction. What we need to improve still is his strength, left leg to right leg strength. Given the original injury, an adductor tendon avulsion... we need to get that strength back to 90-100% before we take that next step with that contested work. We’re a couple of weeks away from resuming that we think, so it’s probably looking somewhere between the three-to-four (week) mark before we see him back on the park."

Fraser Turner, femur

“The second last (VFL) game before the bye, he flagged to us that he had some groin pain post-game. The following week back at training that got worse. We did some further investigation and found the pain was being referred from a stress related injury in his femur, very similar to what Jacob Townsend had in the pre-season. He’s going to miss a bit of time, probably four to five weeks. He’s a young player, the youngest of our draftees, sometimes with younger players the load can creep up on them.”

Luke English, shoulder

“In good news, Luke English has resumed non-contact skills this week and will be back to full contact skills next week and will resume playing at the end of next week.”

Jack Ross, ankle

“Jack spent the last week on the Alter-G treadmill and now he’s progressing his conditioning base outside. He’ll progress through a rehab program and introduction to football over the next couple of weeks, but I would anticipate he’s about four weeks away from resuming football.”

Marlion Pickett, finger

"Just before Marlion was drafted, he re-injured his finger and had to have surgery on it and a wire put in. We’re about 10 days away from that wire coming back out and then he'll resume training with the group and introduction to skills program which is pretty exciting. He’s been doing some high-level conditioning for the last two to three weeks and we’re probably about four to five weeks away from seeing Marlion playing football."

Callum Moore, ankle

"Cal’s starting running on the Alter-G treadmill this week and he’ll go through that process of building his load on the treadmill before we then get him back outside and progress his conditioning. He’s missed a fair bit of time already, and we’re probably five to six weeks away from him playing again. So, we’re looking at Callum playing some good football again by the end of the season."

Early prognosis

The cavalry is on its way. Richmond is poised to regain a host of top-end players for its match against St Kilda, but the soft-tissue trio – Cotchin, Edwards and Lambert – will have to get through training this week. Short could return at either VFL or AFL level after dislocating his elbow in round three. Riewoldt and Nankervis have returned to running at top speed, Ross has moved from the weight-bearing Alter-G treadmill to outdoor running, while draftee Turner has developed bone stress in his femur. Recruit Pickett will have a wire removed from his finger next week. - Sarah Black

RICHMOND

Injured Richmond premiership ruckman Toby Nankervis (adductor) is close to a return following a long layoff. Nankervis is likely to be available for selection to face Collingwood next Friday week but Tigers coach Damien Hardwick isn’t prepared to take any unnecessary risks with the big man. Jack Riewoldt will only be better for the run after resuming against the Giants, in what was the Tiger’s second game since Round 2 following a knee injury. He looked sharp in spurts and combined nicely with fellow spearhead Tom Lynch. The Tigers got through unscathed against the Giants last Sunday. But Hardwick has selection headaches all the same with Tigers star Josh Caddy starting the VFL win over Werribee. Caddy finished with 26 disposals and two goals. Exciting forward Jack Higgins had 22 disposals, along with Jacob Townsend. Liam Baker collected 20 disposals and a goal while Dan Butler kicked two majors.

Come on Jack are you trying to say Marlion hasn't done much training for the last 5 weeks because of that finger issue? Whats he been doing mate just sitting around in the Grandstands at Punt road?

Please don't talk rubbish mate. I am hearing he is now getting very fit and is very lean ready for VFL game time. We shall see!!!

He has done heaps of running but no contested work
Only see one other person at training and it ain’t you
Marlion would need two to three contested/ set play  sessions to play a half of football against Casey
He has mainly done running with rehab group and warm ups with main which are basic drills

Stack experienced soreness after last Friday night’s game against Collingwood and his calf hasn’t improved enough for him to be available to play this weekend.

The Club will assess his availability for next week.

One of Richmond's shortest injury lists for the season at the right time of the year. Moore is a chance to make his return in the VFL from a fractured ankle this weekend. Stack is less likely to play against Carlton, with the club wanting to be cautious with a first-year player who has a soft-tissue injury. Cotchin is still a week or two away. - Sarah Black

Injury list

Trent Cotchin (hamstring) — test

Dylan Grimes (ankle) — TBC

Jack Higgins (brain bleed) — season

Toby Nankervis (soreness) — test

Alex Rance (knee) — season

Sydney Stack (ankle) — TBC

The Tigers’ injury list has diminished significantly, with the majority of their stars back into the club’s best 22. Skipper Trent Cotchin only just missed selection this week and should be a lock to return for the club’s blockbuster match against Brisbane at the MCG on Sunday, as should Toby Nankervis. But Sydney Stack (ankle) could be done for the year, with the talented youngster to undergo surgery after succumbing to injury in the VFL. Fears were allayed when Dylan Grimes (ankle) returned to the field on Sunday, but the defender could be touch and go to feature against the Lions. Alex Rance (ACL) ruled out an unlikely return earlier this month.

Stack underwent surgery on Monday night for an ankle syndesmosis injury which occurred in the VFL. Grimes will need to get through training, while Cotchin should be right to go this round after being held over an extra week. The picture isn't as clear for Nankervis, who is battling adductor/groin soreness stemming back to his long-term injury earlier this year. - Sarah Black

Injury scare for red-hot Tiger

Jon Ralph
Herald-Sun
26 Aug 2019

Richmond expects Dion Prestia to play against Brisbane despite suffering achilles soreness after the best season of his AFL career.

Prestia was today named in the All Australian squad and, after joining Tom Lynch in playing every game this year, could take out the Tigers best-and-fairest.

He was exceptional in the win over Brisbane with 30 possessions, 669 metres gained and 116 ranking points.

But he has some achilles soreness from the game which football boss Neil Balme said should settle down in time to play Brisbane on Saturday week.

“I think he was a bit sore but (the medicos) are not worried about it. He was a bit sore towards the end and they would rather he wasn’t but they are not too concerned about it.”

Richmond plays Essendon in the VFL finals on Saturday, which means ruckman Toby Nankervis will get a run after groin issues.

The club is worried about his capacity to play as many as four finals in a row but hopeful he will continue to improve after mid-year groin surgery.

Trent Cotchin would have likely played if he was available to get more miles into his legs after only 11 games this year and one since Round 19.

It is incredibly variable as each injury can vary in severity quite a bit. Obviously Jack Ross was on the worst end of the spectrum. Kane Lambert last year was on the better end. So at best, maybe he could be fit for the GF but I doubt they'd risk him.
