REPORTS: Tigers keen on Weller?
Zero Hanger
19 Nov 2018
Delisted St Kilda forward Maverick Weller could end up with Richmond under the new rookie rule, according to Cal Twomey from afl.com.au.
Under the rule changes, formerly listed players who have been previously nominated for the draft, retired or delisted can sign with a club in the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP) between December 1 and March 15, gaining a sort of free agency which means they can forego the stressful experience of entering the draft as a Category A rookie.
This means that Weller, delisted by the Saints, can find a new home without any hassle.
Weller played 80 games for the Saints across five seasons, primarily as a defensive forward or in a tagging role. He previously played 32 games Gold Coast, where he was also delisted at the end of the 2013 season.

Kill me now :(
He left St Kilda to get back to the Gold Coast but the GC didn’t want him back.
Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to wok out why.......

I thought Snipper was a far better player than Weller but we gave him away but now are keen on Weller. How is that improving the list?

Mav Weller will be an excellent pick up and will make a good extra midfielder who is ready to go.

I'm pretty underwhelmed too but....

...clearly quicker, bigger, more versatile and a better kick than Miles....better tackler too... :shh
Also Miles wants to play seniors, so he left ....Weller having been delisted probaby just wants to be back on an AFL list and will be happy to be a depth player at this stage.... :shh :shh
Still.....would rather use this new rule to get Mitch Grigg....:shh :shh :shh

Weller has withdrawn himself from the draft. So we must be definitely picking him up.
Maverick Weller is set to sign with a third AFL club, Richmond
THREE previously listed AFL footballers have withdrawn their draft nominations and are set to take advantage of new rookie rules to reignite their careers.
Maverick Weller, Corey Wagner and Keegan Brooksby were going to test their luck in the draft, but the AFL's announcement last Thursday about the pre-season supplemental selection period (SPP) changed their situation.
Weller, who played 32 games for Gold Coast and most recently 89 for St Kilda, is set to sign with Richmond after touring the club's facilities in recent days.
The 26-year-old will provide more depth for the Tigers, who traded fringe players Corey Ellis, Anthony Miles, Tyson Stengle and Sam Lloyd and lost Reece Conca in free agency.
A team cannot re-sign a player in the SPP the same year it delisted him unless he is overlooked in the drafts, such as in the case of Jacob Townsend at Richmond.
The SPP runs from December 1 through to March 15 and players can't sign or train with a club until then.

Richmond will recruit former St Kilda midfielder Mav Weller in the AFL’s new Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP).
Weller withdrew his nomination from the 2018 National AFL Draft, allowing Richmond to commit to recruiting him when the selection period opens on December 1. Weller cannot train with the Tigers until this time.
Richmond General Manager – Football, Neil Balme said the Club is pleased to recruit the seasoned midfielder.
“We think Mav will fit into our team and our football program really well,” Balme said.
“We’ve been really impressed by him, and at only 26 years of age, he has plenty of football ahead of him.”
Originally hailing from Burnie in Tasmania, Weller has played 121 AFL games and kicked 58 goals in his eight seasons of league football.
He was recruited to the Gold Coast Suns as a 17-year-old selection, playing 32 games for the Suns from 2011-13, before moving to St Kilda at the end of 2013, where he played 89 AFL games.

agreed especially considering the depth we lost.
At worst he helps provide a bit of leadership around the place. IIRC he was close to being named in the leadership group at the saints. Not a difficult ask but still something.

He was in the leadership group for a few years at the Saints

Cheap depth who leads. Well played RFC
-
Not as nonplussed by it as I was initially but still would've preferred Mitch Grigg or even Jesse Lonergan....hopefully having three old GC mates here should help as well being at a big professional club with top facilities that's winning, isn't a rabble and not being coached by Richardson or McKenna.... :shh

Why did he get dumped from the other clubs?
-
Why did he get dumped from the other clubs?
Primarily because he’s a pedestrian standard afl player who can slot into playing a role as stop gap in the event of injuries.
Not something you need when you are at the bottom of the ladder as those slots are for your speculative young picks

What freakin depth did we lose. apart from one they were all ordinary we got rid of blokes who were never going to take us anywhere apart from one player and in that its debatable.
If im to look at actual performances at the level FMD Anthony Miles has it all over Weller.
Exactly what has Weller ever done at the level. A 27yo big bodied but short in stature mid who doesnt get a heap of ball, wins few clearances and is ordinary when it comes to winning contested ball.On top of that he is not a tackler yes he lays some tackles but no more or less than any other mid going around.
I understand he is rated by the club and others but fmd at age 27 it is time to put the runs on the board.
Personally there were a couple of state league prospects that i would rather we looked at.
Imo he just hasnt ticked enough boxes to warrant taking but hey who knows he may work out at his third club.

Weller has been given guernsey #16.

Weller reunites with ‘brothers’ at Tigerland
Grace Kalac
AFL media
Dec 4, 2018 3:51PM
Richmond recruit Mav Weller is relishing the opportunity to play alongside his former Gold Coast ‘brothers’ Josh Caddy, Dion Prestia and Tom Lynch at Tigerland.
Weller, who played three seasons for the Suns before five years at St Kilda, officially became a Tiger on December 1.
For the first time since 2012, the quartet will share a locker room, something Weller never thought would happen again.
“We’re all the same age and we all were up [at Gold Coast] since day one so we did a lot of stuff together and grew up together in a way,” Weller said.
“We were all just out of home so we really had to look after each other like brothers.
“To come back down here and to reunite that friendship, it’s exciting for me and I’m looking forward to having that chemistry come next year.”
Weller, who has 121 AFL games to his name, is looking forward to complementing Richmond’s midfield and forward line.
“I think I’ll fit in pretty well, I think the things I do well works into [Richmond’s] game plan well,” he said.
“I’m quite aggressive, give good pressure, and am a contested ball winner.”
Weller is “over the moon” to continue his career at Punt Road Oval.
“The way the club run day-to-day things, they’ve very positive, very inclusive, and they really encourage people to just be themselves. I noticed it as soon as I walked in,” Weller said.
“I’m all ears at the moment, learning as much as I can. It’s an absolute treat to come to such a successful, big club.”

Upgrade on Bellis at the very least.

Big call, BT. Both very courageous inside players but BEllis has a superior leg. Hmmm yeah, big call but I hope you're right :shh
-
Big call, BT. Both very courageous inside players but BEllis has a superior leg. Hmmm yeah, big call but I hope you're right :shh
Why with such a great leg does your man kick it sideways and backwards so much?
His lack of courage in that department has/will cost him his AFL career unless he can change that.
I can’t see it but if he generally pushes someone out of the current side with good form, than it can only benefit us all.
Make or break year for Brando would you agree?
-
Make or break? Certainly. Well, not really. If he has an average year he'd likely look for a trade or the club would look to trade. Though he's a free agent I think so he could bugger off regardless which I'm sure would please some :lol
He kicks sideways and backwards because he's not 100% comfortable across half back. Doesn't want to turn the footy over. He never played like that on the wing and I'd expect to see him back in the midfield next season.
-
I think Bellis is going the way of Miles where he met a club need for a time but that has now been superseded with fresh talent who can deliver a better version of his best football. I see him spend a year in the 2’s before being traded

haaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhh

Have it on very good authority that the only reason he wasn't shipped off to the Gold Coast for peanuts was because we stuffed up and wrote the wrong christian name on the form.... :shh :shh

Home time for Maverick Weller ahead of Richmond's JLT Series game in Launceston
Alex Fair
The Examiner
March 7 2019 - 7:35PM
One game into his new life as a Tiger, Maverick Weller feels he is playing as well as ever.
The 27-year-old former Burnie Docker made his debut for Richmond in last week's JLT encounter with Melbourne, collecting 14 disposals, taking nine marks, laying five tackles and kicking 1.0 playing in the front half in his new side's win.
He credited part of the reason behind that performance to the environment at his new football home, one he has embraced since he signed as a pre-season supplemental selection in December.
"It has been great and they are such a great club and have been so welcoming,'' said Weller, who played 121 games for Gold Coast and St Kilda before the Tigers gave him a lifeline.
"I've been able to see first hand that all the rumours about their culture are true, and it is just a great culture with great leadership with Trent (Cotchin), Alex (Rance) and Jack (Riewoldt), so it has been a seamless transition.
"I feel very much part of it all ready and Sunday was a lot of fun and I felt instantly comfortable out there.
"(Last week) I was running on top of the ground either though it was 40 degrees and it was good to get involved and I felt more confident as the game went on.
"It is pretty easy to play your role in that side as when you look around there are some seriously talented players, and that just makes it easier to go about your role."
After "giving it all" over the pre-season, which included constantly reviewing each training session to ensure he could adapt to the Richmond way, Weller said he was ready for the next step in his journey at Punt Road.
This will include Saturday night's JLT Series clash against Hawthorn at UTAS Stadium, and then hopefully round 1 selection against Carlton.
Weller said he couldn't wait to once again play in his home state.
The match will come at the ground where he made his senior debut for the Burnie Dockers.
He also kicked his first AFL goal there as a Sun.
"I love it as when it is all over and done with over here I am planning on going back to Tassie, and I just feel so comfortable when I am down there,'' he said.
"You walk out onto the ground and instantly there is a familiar smell and a familiar feel, and you are instantly comfortable, and I do love it."
He said the Tigers would be taking Saturday's outing very seriously.
"In the game just gone we did try a few things with a few blokes out of position and we tried a few different structural things, and this will be a full dress rehearsal for round 1, and I don't think we will be taking it easy, we will be going pretty hard,'' he said.
"We watched a bit of the Hawks today and they looked pretty similar to last year and they look to switch the ball a lot with short kicking to open up the ground and they are just a well drilled outfit, as they have been for 10 years, and we will need to be accountable, but we are looking forward to it."

Richmond recruit Weller didn’t let himself “rot on the vine”: Lyon
By Andrew Slevison
SEN
21 March 2019
Garry Lyon has praised Maverick Weller for climbing off the AFL scrapheap and resurrecting his career.
The 27-year-old will debut for Richmond in their season opener against Carlton at the MCG tonight.
Just five months ago, Weller was delisted by St Kilda - who had finished 16th on the AFL ladder - but now finds himself set to run out for one of 2019’s premiership fancies.
It is a story that has delighted former Melbourne captain Lyon.
“You know what this is? This is the greatest advocacy for change,” he said on SEN Breakfast.
“If you’re a player at an AFL club, and you are not getting opportunity, it might be down towards the bottom of the ladder, then put yourself out there.
“See if you can get to a new environment, don’t just stay there and wallow.”
Lyon added: “A bloke couldn’t get a game for St Kilda and he’s going to play with the premiership favourites.
“Don’t stay there and rot on the vine.”
Tim Watson is also a fan of the one-time Gold Coast Sun, who will operate as a small pressure forward for the Tigers.
“They like that type of player. He’s got some power, he’s got some speed,” he said.
“I would love to know what the story was because a couple of seasons ago, when St Kilda had their best season under Alan Richardson, he was one of their better players at half-forward.
“They did this successfully, the Tigers, in their premiership year with Jacob Townsend.
“This bloke (Weller) would be a more powerful, more robust, quicker version of Jacob Townsend.”
Weller has played 121 games during his injury-interrupted eight-season AFL career with both the Suns and the Saints.

Rioli?
Butler?
And George last week?
Some escape criticism more than others...

weller- no flags and no runs and should never have been in the side unless we had 10 players injured.

Probably on a par bt and in anyones language not good enough for all of them could throw a few other favorites in there as well.
