Butler out for George or Baker

Garthy for rance or move balta down back and bring in whichever mid was the most impressive in the 2s.

Not sure Bultker's tackling nullifys what he's currently serving up.....would prefer he was first to the ball anyway....becoming a very selfish footballer, a notable squib and a mug lair who often lacks composure... ....surprised he's still a walk up start given that;s the complete opposite of the qualities we're told Hardwick supposedly values the most and given that  he regularly drops others for it (see BEllis, Menadue, Bolton & Markov).... :shh

Lambert Waltz was also a full display...particulsarly early.....most people of course will only notice the courageous mark he took at the top of the defensive 50 in the third...but as we know your boy BEllis would often do that too..... :shh

I'd rather see the Ellis Evade than the Waltz/Bounce Away. Bring back the original softie, I miss him. And I reckon we need another runner....:shh :shh

This.

Carltons midfield were ripping us apart for 2 quarters, if we bring that again, Collingwood will slaughter us

Out: Rance (knee), Butler
In: Garthwaite, Castagna

The match report in the VFL practice match thread said Ross was prolific.

I don't think Garthwaite or any new draftees will come in against Collingwood this week.  RG will need another game or 2 before coming in and not sure you want a draftee in front of 95,000

Think they go with experience.

Give balta first crack in rances position. We got broad astbury and grimes who can take the talls so he’ll  still be able to pinch hit in the ruck when nank needs a break.

Then bring in another mid for rance and for the love of god drop butler for George/Baker/Bolton.

Astbury gets Cox. Garthwaite gets Mihocek and Balta gets Degoey. Leaves Grimes Vlastuin Broad and Houli to play on their smalls.
Lets be honest here Grimes and Broad do not play on kp forwards more often than not they take on and play on small medium types.

No way. Grimes on De Goey any day. He was the one that quelled him when he was moved onto him far too late in the Prelim....

i don’t think Garthwaite will come in as he didn’t play the last half of the 2’s game. I would say he is still a couple of weeks off being ready for senior footy.

With the out of Rance against Collingwood, I think Astusty should take Cox, Grimes should take DeGoey, Broad should take Mihocek and Vlastuin should take Elliott.
Houli and Short to take their smalls.
And i would push McIntosh back to help out when needed.

Outs- Rance, Butler
Ins, George, Baker- he was very good last night in the 2’s

Ross not far away either IMO. He is seriously built for AFL footy and could be something special.

In Sydney Stack for me. His disposal was damaging and was one of the best players in the VFL game. He skills are elite and when he got the ball it resulted in a deep forward entry.

Doubt Moore will get a senior gig up forward unless Lynch or Jack get injured. Can he play and reinvent himself as a key defender?

Moore is a tall utilty whose best positions are in defence and on the wing...can also play relief ruck....he's a third tall forward at best at AFL level....  :shh

Too short (193cm) to ruck now under the new rules.

Moore is only one cm shorter than Rance though so he is tall enough to play key defence if Dimma and co. want him to.

Hard to know exact heights. At the pre-draft analysis Matt Clarke said that Balta was now 196cm although the RFC webpage have him listed at 194cm.... :shh

He's tall enough to be a relief ruck which is usually the second and more ofhten the third option...only has to keep the opposing ruckman honest for a cuople of contests a quarter at the most....i;e. better than relying on the likes of Grigg..... :shh

Would not be shocked to see Soldo selected as the Pies have 2 ruckman in their team. For mine we need leg speed...George might be called up. I would prefer Markov or Menadue selected.

I saw Houli reach for his hammy in the last - I don’t think he came out off but wondered how he might react once he cooled down...

Rance's heir apparent unlikely to face Magpies

RICHMOND is still working out how best to replace Alex Rance, but it's unlikely his nominated long-term successor, Ryan Garthwaite, will be called upon to fill the void against Collingwood on Thursday night.

Garthwaite, who played two matches in 2018 when David Astbury was out, was on managed minutes in his return from an Achilles injury in Thursday evening's VFL practice match against Northern Blues.

Richmond football manager Neil Balme said Garthwaite would probably need more game time before being considered for senior selection.

"He only played about 50 per cent of the game so it would be pretty unlikely that we'd pick him this week, but we haven't been through that process yet," Balme told AFL.com.au.

"It's not out of the question completely but it wouldn't be ideal."

Balme said Garthwaite had overcome a "grumbly Achilles" and had been in full training for several weeks to make himself available to play.

The 20-year-old will look to get more mileage into his legs to give himself the best chance of being recalled for an extended period of time throughout 2019, according to Balme.

Balme said there was also an option of pushing the versatile Noah Balta, who made his debut against Carlton in round one, into defence.

"He's played a reasonable amount of defence in the VFL last year, plus forward," Balme said.

"It's a matter of what we decide to do with our players and the structure of the side."

Balme said the make-up of Collingwood's forward line, which features medium-sized forwards Jordan De Goey, Jamie Elliott and Jaidyn Stephenson, would also be considered in the selection process.

With the Tigers to make at least one forced change, Balme said Brandon Ellis, Oleg Markov and Jack Ross would all come into the mix to face the Pies.

Ellis racked up 40 disposals against Northern Blues after missing out on selection in round one, while Markov and Ross were also among the top performers.

"They're always in the picture. If you haven't got 22 to pick from each week you're in a bit of trouble," Balme said.

"Some blokes were a bit stiff not to get a game, but we're certainly considering those guys."

In the Mix - Round 2

Sarah Black
afl.com.au
27 March 2019

RICHMOND

Get them in: Brandon Ellis was a standout in his new midfield role, picking up a casual 40 disposals against Northern Blues in a VFL practice match, while draftee Jack Ross also impressed. Back flanker Oleg Markov was in hot form over pre-season and again played strongly in the VFL.

Under the pump: There weren't many passengers in Richmond's win over Carlton. Debutant Noah Balta had only five touches but will hold his spot, potentially moving down back to cover for Alex Rance.

Medical room: Rance had a right knee reconstruction on Tuesday and is expected to miss the year. His expected replacement Ryan Garthwaite played managed minutes in the VFL after returning from an Achilles complaint, and will most likely play VFL again. Jason Castagna (ankle) and Jacob Townsend (thigh) are in a similar situation.

Verdict:
With Garthwaite still not quite ready for an AFL return, Markov looks the most likely to come in for Rance. Despite 40 touches, Ellis is unlikely to force his way into the midfield. – Sarah Black

Hardwick said the Tigers were yet to determine the best way to replace the five-time All Australian.

However, possible inclusion Ryan Garthwaite will not face the Magpies and is likely to need one more week at VFL level before being declared fit after Achilles soreness, meaning the Tigers could use versatile tall Noah Balta, who made his debut last week, in defence.

Running half-back Oleg Markov could also come into the side and he trained with the main group on Wednesday at Punt Road, as did small forward Liam Baker.

Brandon Ellis, who picked up 40 disposals last week, appears a strong chance to replace Houli for the Thursday night MCG blockbuster.
