Title: Next week - Tiges vs Lions
Post by: mightytiges on April 17, 2006, 07:35:43 PM
Leppitsch has been offered a 2 weeks suspension so that's another Lion gone. Brayshaw is iffy.

Who should come in for Gas and Roachy this week?

Question is who do we bring in to our back half?

Ray Hall will stay because we need height.

I expect Stafford to get recalled and it's time to throw in some of the kids :thumbsup

Out of those already in the side it's down to Razor, Joel and Kellaway  :-\. No Brayshaw helps but there's still Brown and maybe Merrett if he is brought in. Too big bodies although Joel has done ok on Brown in recent years. Do we do something extreme and go with Richo at CHB or floating around the back half and bring in Hughes or Patto up forward. The Lions won't have Leppitsch at CHB. I'm guessing Krakouer or Rodan will come in for Roachy.

Both Staff and Knobel completed training but Wallace was keeping his cards close to his chest if either will play this week. He said we'll weigh things up with both as Staff played half a game for Coburg on the weekend and Knobel while having done more training than Staff hasn't played a game yet.

Simmo didn't train with the main group. Did a few laps then did some reflex and short handball stuff on the boundary with Chaffey, Moore and Gas before doing some ruck practice with a trainer holding a bag. He didn't look proppy in anyway so hopefully they are just managing him carefully given he's had to ruck virtually all match the past two games.

According to Chan 10 up here, no final word on Bradshaw.  They have named both players to play.  McGrath is named as an emergency.  News on Chan 10 said that Robert Copeland is likely to line up on Browny.

Sore Lions may give Gabba a miss
21 April 2006   Herald Sun
Andrew Hamilton

BRISBANE Lions may shift their training back to their summer base at Coorparoo as a growing list of players, led by skipper Michael Voss, struggle with impact injuries from the Gabba's rock-hard surface.

The Lions go into tomorrow night's clash with Richmond at the Gabba with Voss and star forward Jonathan Brown less than 100 per cent fit.

Players have been complaining about the hardness of the Gabba surface and Voss and Brown both appear to have soft-tissue injuries.

It is believed Voss has had a sore hamstring for several weeks. He was one of six senior players who took no part in the main training session on Tuesday. Brown did not finish the session.

It had been suggested Brown has another groin injury but he appeared to receive treatment on a calf before leaving the track.

Both players have been named to take on the Tigers.

Great! Another chance to possibly lose someone through injury  :scream :help. Browny would be wise to give this game a miss.

Tigers given easy build-up
By Andrew Stafford
The Age
April 22, 2006

TERRY Wallace ran Richmond players lightly at the Gabba last night in a bid to allow the weary Tigers to regain strength and stamina after a six-day break.

Having played a rampant West Coast last Sunday, Richmond made the journey north as the coach admitted his team had been "a bit flat" at training this week.

"We've just really rested them up over the last few days and had a pretty casual time of it, just to recharge the batteries," Wallace said. "It'll really just be a familiarity with the ground as much as anything else, but I expect that they should be OK."

Wallace and Brisbane Lions coach Leigh Matthews both have injury concerns ahead of tonight's clash, with key players from both sides to come under scrutiny.

Wallace again described Tigers forward Nathan Brown as a "week-to-week proposition" as he continues his comeback from a broken leg. "It's a matter of how he pulls up after training," Wallace said.

"We probably thought earlier in the week he was less likely to play than more likely, (but) as the week's gone on he probably had his best training session the other day … really it just depends on how he trains and then how he pulls up."

Matthews has his own problems, with ruckman Clark Keating battling what Matthews described as a "sore foot".

But Matthews dismissed speculation about the fitness of captain Michael Voss and Jonathan Brown. Voss did not train with the Lions on Tuesday, while Brown came off the Gabba early after appearing to receive treatment to a calf muscle.

"They all did what they have to do (at training) last night," Matthews said.

Keating has been selected for the first time this year, with Matthews predicting Richmond would elevate emergency Greg Stafford to cover the height-depleted Tigers' ruck options.

"If Stafford doesn't play, they're only really playing one ruckman in (Troy) Simmonds and virtually no one else who can really ruck," he said.

"I mean, I guess (Ray) Hall can ruck, he's a tall player but they're very light-on for potential ruck options if Stafford doesn't play."

Title: Wait-and-see on Browny (Sportal)

Wait-and-see on Brown
10:56:43 PM Fri 21 April, 2006
Andrew Browne
Sportal for afl.com.au

Nathan Brown appeared to have successfully completed Richmond's light training run at the Gabba, but a final decision on whether he plays against the Brisbane Lions will be made on Saturday morning, according to coach Terry Wallace.

"It is a matter of how pulls up after the training session," Wallace said prior to the Tigers' brief 45-minute hit out on Friday evening.

"We probably thought early in the week it was less likely to play than more likely, but as the week went he had his best training session on Wednesday, but we will see how he pulls up."

Brown spent most of the time having shots at goal before he took his turn in the goal-square and kicked out to his teammates as he continues his gradual comeback from last season's broken leg.

Team officials had expressed concern that Brown was struggling with 'lateral movement' on the firm surfaces with the rod in his leg causing some discomfort.

Richmond's feeder team in the VFL - the Coburg Tigers - do not play until Tuesday so a squad of 24 flew into Brisbane with ruckman Greg Stafford and mid-sized Nathan Foley on standby in case Brown does not make it.

Wallace did not want to focus too much on the Lions but conceded the selection of veteran ruckman Clark Keating together with young forward Daniel Merrett had the Tigers coaching panel thinking particularly after losing defender Darren Gaspar with a hamstring injury last week at Subiaco.

"We will watch with interest to see if all their 'talls' are playing," contemplated a thoughtful Wallace.

"From a selection point of view I though they brought in a particularly tall side so we will have to wait and see if everyone comes up.

"We have lost three of our taller defenders over the last three weeks, but if they are not there they are not there. We haven't got replacements for those guys so you have to ask the guys that are available to do the job."

Last year the Tigers narrowly recorded their first win at the Gabba in four years and even though Wallace remains confident, he views the circumstances surrounding the 2006 contest a little differently.

"The last time we came up here the Lions had lost their last three (at home), but they only have played the one here this year and have won it," he observed.

"We have played three of the better sides in the competition up to this stage so it is difficult to get a line on where we are in comparison to perhaps those in the mid-range of the competition.

"You go in with confidence every time you walk out to play a game - I've never gone into a game thinking it can't be done."

The Tigers coach admitted his team looked a 'little flat' at Wednesday's training session, but believed the arduous back-to-back task of crossing the continent from west to east had been managed well.

"We have rested them up over the past few days, had an easy time of it and re-charged the batteries," said Wallace.

Doubt there's gonna be any blowouts this week and it paid over $5.00

According to 3aw, Browny pulled up sore after his fitness test and Stafford is his replacement.

Probably a blessing in disguise given the supposed hardness of the Gabba surface.

The games not that bad. Both sides are keeping in tight, hence minimising any chances of a breakaway. Question is, how long until one side starts doing something different to break the game open?

I amazes me that umpires don't understand the rule about taking the ball on the full in the ruck.

It means that you don't get the benefit of "having no prior oprtunity" - it doesn't mean that you have to dispose of it perfectly and it doesn't mean you give away a free kick if the ball is knocked out of your hand.

Oh I'm so glad we won.  Actually it was Mini-me who got the ball signed by Joel.  Didn't the last quarter just go on forever?

He hasn't done as much flashy stuff that everyone expects from him which is why people think he's been quiet despite his stats being up on 2005. We have the inside guys Cogs, Tuck and tonight Foley but we need blokes who can break the game open and have the speed to win the ball in open space which is what Lids did tonight. It was a good game from him especially in the third quarter.

The only negative I had of him tonight was I thought his disposal was a touch off at times. He also should have gone all the way for goal in the last after that fantastic run. Ended up being a nothing kick. We would have had two goals of the week in 4 rounds.

Well the Tigers have given me a holiday to remember!!!

It certainly wasnt the best game of footy, but atleast we had a fair crack all night and held off their last attempt at trying to grab the game. Was impressed with the run most players showed tonight, although i still think most of our players need to run harder to link up as we run and carry the footy.

Had great seats on the wing, got great transport to the ground via the bus (thanks Julz for the advice  :thumbsup) Got to catch up and say hello to Julz and also met Mopsy which was great also.

Being my first interstate trip, i found the Gabba to be very weird. Great venue, but no attmosphere. Most of their crowd dont have a clue about the game and are just on the wagon. It was great to stick it up the Brisbane supportes who were sitting around me.

My voice is pretty much shot after tonight, been out for two weeks ;D and am not match fit. Hopefully i will be better for the run and i am looking forward to returning to melbourne and heading to the G next Friday night.

Yes my throat is sore too and I went to the game with a strained hip-flexor!  I'm always impressed by the number of tiger supporters there.

Watching on telly, it was good to see so many Richmond supporters there.

You would be proud of Richo and Simmonds' efforts Julz.  Richo was sensational in that 3rd quarter.  His effort against Vossy turned the game I thought.

I agree TS, Richo had an absolute cracker! He played well all over the ground and plenty of one percenters like the Voss challenge. Simmo also had a great game and I thought Joel did really well on Brown in fact I was very happy with our makeshift backline except for the odd bunching up here and there. If Petts can control his frustration he will also be very good for us this year. LMAO @ master niggler and all round Mr Happy Chris Johnson kicking out of bounds to Neville nobody and Akkers 50m penalty brain explosion!! :rollin Two of the highlights of the game for me after having to endure years of cockiness from those two! :thumbsup

Might’ve been a bit over the top for me to say that piece of play turned the game, but from that point the game seemed to turn our way, anyway.

No doubting that Richo’s efforts in that third quarter had a major impact on the result.

Re Pettifer, he needs to start developing some consistency in his game.  Maybe that’s partly due to him being easily distracted by everything going on around him, rather than focusing on his role.  Makes such a difference to the way he plays when he stays involved in the game.

The Gabba is a weird place and the supporters - let's see they cheer points, they cheer out on the full, as long the ball goes somewhere near the Lions goals the cheer like they've scored a goal :help

Sensational effort by the tigers and I reckon Richo did turn the game because when we needed someone to step up and take the game on Richo did it, when we needed a clutch goal in the last quarter Richo did it but the thing that people mightn't have seem was his workrate in keeping the ball inside the F50 - never let it be said that he doesn't chase or make a contest.

And too the bozzo who on my red-eye flight last week told me that the tigers would never go anywhere and achieve anything while we have one Matthew Richardson playing for us - you sir are a FOOL

For those ignorant, like myself, or those interested, the footy the kids receive is specially made with the message "thank you for playing your part in another Tiger victory!".  Joel signed it "v Bris Rd 4 - you beauty!".

It was terrific they handed out footys away interstate and thanked the many Tigers supporters in Queensland who made it to the game. Hopefully we got some converts along the way too.

Actually, had a multi bet on all the games this week in one bet.
For every game, had one team +39.5 for each game.
Doubt there's gonna be any blowouts this week and it paid over $5.00
Get on lol
I don't like to brag, but ....  :rollin

The Qld Tiger supporters are a great bunch of people and they put on a top pre-match function which held everyone's attention for the 2 -1/2 hrs it ran for.

The post game party was made even better by the win.

Foley, Joel Bowden and Rainsy were there with CEO Wright
and they all spoke well (when you could hear them over the din) JB was awarded the perpetual shield for the most courageous player on the night.

It was my first interstate trip too, Bull.I had an absolute ball.I just got back yesterday after being up there since easter with my 2 daughters doing the theme park thing.
I stayed with a friend and was advised to catch a free bus in from Carindale which dropped us about 100metres from gate 2. We had great seats on the wing and i was very surprised as was my brisbane friend in regards to the amount of support we had.The atmosphere was terriffic in the third when we piled on those goals.I was very close to Richos dive in front of voss which really set the crowd alight.
Unfortunately i was too busy celebrating at the end to get my daughter draped in richmond colours down to the fence in time to get a football from deledio i think it was but the kid next to me on the bus home let me have a look at his which was signed by Andrew Raines.
Defnitely not a hostile crowd up there unlike the stories i have heard about supporters going to adelaide.Vey laid back atmosphere similar to the whole relaxed culture up there overall.
I would have had agreat time even if the tiges didnt win but it will defnitely be agame which i will treasure for ever.Even got a few photos after the game proudly displaying my scarf on the boundary line. :cheers
