William Martyn becomes a Tiger

Richmond has used its third selection (No. 44 overall) in the 2019 national draft to recruit Brisbane Lions Academy midfielder William Martyn.

Here is a summary of what Richmond fans can expect to see from Martyn on-field...

Club: Brisbane Lions Academy
Height: 183cm
Weight: 73kg

Will was the captain of the Brisbane Lions academy in 2019. He then represented the Allies in the National Championships before playing senior football in the NEAFL at the backend of the year for both the Lions, as well as Aspley, culminating in him being a part of the Lions' premiership-winning team.

He was outstanding in his five games for the Lions in the NAB League, averaging 29 possessions, 9 contested possessions, 4 clearances, 5 tackles and 5 inside 50’s per game. The highlight was his leadership and competitive instincts in a 33 possession performance where his team was beaten by over 100 points by a strong Sandringham team, but his consistency was also a feature with him getting over 30 possessions in 4 of his 5 games at this level

He then had a solid national carnival playing a mixture of inside and outside mid roles and averaging 14 possessions per game.

Will is a great size for a midfield role and is equally capable of playing inside or outside the contest with his competitive instincts, hard running and neat foot skills. Will is an excellent addition to our midfield group with his flexibility and work ethic both on and off the field.

why didn't they match to keep him? It was just pick 59. They weren't even prepared to cough up pick 59 lol. Hopefully the kids work out but as I said Fagan wouldn't have let them go if he thought theyd be good afl players. Pick 59 is nothing and they weren't prepared to pay it. Why?

Brisbane went after a backman with their pick 59 midfielders were not high on their priority at that stage having already picked up two earlier in the draft.

DRAFT ANALYSIS: “The Brisbane Academy skipper proved his worth as an accumulator who works hard around the ground, with room to improve in his disposal and overall impact.”

WILL Martyn looked like being the Lions’ leading academy prospect in 2019 after a hot start to his season in five high-level NAB League outings. Since, he went on to feature among a well-balanced Allies midfield and snuck into Brisbane’s undefeated premiership winning NEAFL side, with just his third match coming in the grand final. Martyn’s ability to find the ball in all areas of the ground and his consistency are his best traits, with his work rate making him a valuable leader at Under 18 level – especially among a talented group of Allies considered for the captaincy role. While he tapered off slightly toward the end of the year and could not quite recreate the high-disposal performances of his NAB League stint, Martyn played his role well in every side he lined up for and could prove to be a solid late option for the Lions come draft time. His effort and off-field qualities are ones which seem to be highly valued by the Brisbane AFL coaching staff, so he could also get a look-in on the back of that and his National Combine invite.

STRENGTHS:

Consistency
Accumulation
Work rate/spread
Leadership
Marking
Clean hands

IMPROVEMENTS:

Kicking efficiency
Impact per possession

Martyn’s strengths of consistency and accumulation really came to the fore during his NAB League cameo with the Lions Academy, averaging 28.8 disposals, 7.2 marks, and 4.6 marks over five games and racking up over 30 disposals in four of those outings. His numbers were not quite the same during the national championships – as is the case for many prospects – but his range of 13-16 over all four appearances in less of a permanent midfield role still stood up. A good number of Martyn’s disposals come on the spread too, with his sound endurance (21.2 yo-yo, 6 minute/16 second 2km) allowing him to provide an option around the ground. It shows in his 68.3 per cent uncontested possession rate and 7.2 marks per NAB League game, often working back to help out the defence and floating forward to try and have a say inside 50. That kind of work rate and willingness carry a side on his back points towards his leadership – on top of the obvious captain tag – while also proving to be durable given he played almost every game he was available for early on.

While Martyn can find a heap of the ball, his disposal by foot can waver at times in the forward half, with much of his contested work a little rushed (2.2 kicking clangers per game at 57.1 per cent efficiency in the NAB League despite just 31 per cent of his possessions contested). Along with improving his kicking efficiency, Martyn’s overall impact within the contest will need to improve, because his hands in close are superb and his overhead marking is strong, but ironing out the outside kicking game to have greater influence going forward will be important. His impact on games in midfield was usually still high given his pure volume of possessions, but having to adapt to roles on the outside and not being the primary ball winner hurt his game slightly for the Allies and in the NEAFL. His disposal-high of 11 against more mature bodies and the added forward minutes means Martyn may need a touch more time to develop and find a role at the next level – with scoreboard impact perhaps a way he can do that. He seemed to be the most damaging as a bottom-ager playing at half-forward where he was too strong in the air and one-on-one for his opponents and his ability to kick long made him that damaging player in the front half. Potentially he could play that fluid role between wing and half-forward using his running capacity to work over his opponents. The fact he has added 10kg to his frame this year shows he has the capacity to work hard and develop, and could prove to be an underrated prospect later in the draft.

Will Martyn

The midfielder is the best player linked with the Brisbane Lions academy. He finds the footy with ease as he links up with his teammates on the outside, with Martyn averaging 28.8 disposals in five NAB League games. Expect him to be one of the big ball winners for the Allies.

its a very defeatist negative attitude.

Using this logic the bidding system is just ceremonial.

Richmond’s National Recruiting Manager Matthew Clarke on Martyn:

Our third selection, midfielder Will Martyn, also played in that premiership winning NEAFL side and also comes from the Brisbane Lions Academy where he was captain this year. Those leadership qualities, alongside his competitiveness, must have impressed you?

"Absolutely. Will’s been in the program for a bit of time now with the Lions and also through AFL Academy programs too. He’s a professional Will, he’s really dedicated to his craft and also working on his body through his recovery and his diet. He ticks a lot of boxes and he’s a very skilled player too. So, we’re really happy to have him as well."

Know little about him but what you do see seems to be pretty decent.

Brisbane i dont think had the capacity to match bids. We had room for mids and we took one here. How good he ends up only time will tell.

ANOTHER northern Academy product will make his AFL debut on Friday night.

But unlike Sydney's Isaac Heeney, Greater Western Sydney's Jacob Hopper or Gold Coast's Jack Bowes, Brisbane Academy graduate Will Martyn will do so for another club.

Captain of the Lions' program in 2019, the Aspley product was also named the team's most valuable player before being overlooked at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft.

Martyn, 20, has since won plaudits at the Tigers with his aggressive approach, even flattening captain Trent Cotchin in a notable pre-season session this summer.

And now the hard-nosed midfielder will run out alongside Cotchin in the Tigers' blockbuster with Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval.

Deserved his shot as his form at VFL level was strong but poor Will had a bit of a mare on debut. Just couldn't adjust to the quicker tempo of AFL footy all night and was run down a number of times when he was free. Even if he gets dropped the one positive is he now knows what to expect and what to work on for the next time he gets an opportunity at senior AFL level.

Will Martyn's stats:

12 disposals (4k, 8h, 5c, 11u, 66.7% eff.)
1 mark
1 tackle
1 clearance
1 inside 50
1 intercept
3 free against
165m gained
57% game time (lowest of the 22).

Red hot game to make your debut. Lessons everywhere for him.

Would give him another game or two then make an assessment.

12 possessions from 57% game time is ok for your first AFL game

Hopefully he comes good but players like corey ellis and will martyn who lack speed struggle to make careers. I hope he proves me wrong. If hes dedicated he'll get himself a sprint coach and try and find an extra 2 or 3 metres over the first 10 metres away ftom a contest.

Foxsports also has Martyn as a "big ball-winner" (at VFL level) that has struggled for consistent stints in their respective AFL sides this season and could be attractive propositions for rival clubs.

Will Martyn (Richmond)

A ball magnet as a junior, the Tigers have always had high hopes for Martyn, who’s out of contract at season’s end. The 20-year-old has played nine games for Richmond’s VFL side this season, averaging 25.1 disposals, 6.4 tackles and 4.3 clearances to be a key member of the team’s on-ball brigade. He cracked into the AFL side twice this year, but managed just four disposals on debut before being an unused medical sub six weeks later. Tigers fans might see him at AFL level over the coming weeks.

We now know why Will hasn't been seen at preseason training. He's apparently got Glandular Fever.

Glandular Fever can really screw up your footy career. Granted a long time ago but I knew a Richmond U19s player who missed two years of footy due to Glandular Fever. Ended his dreams of the big time before it began.

Ben Lennon was another who had a mild case of Glandular Fever.
