Any preference(s) in who we take with our first pick?
-
I like Ford or Cox as they are key position players who may be available but I’m guessing they will take the best available based on money ball
-
Twomey on the AFL website doesn't have a phantom draft yet but he has Jack Carroll around our first pick (pick 17 -> 21 with academy bids)
21. Jack Carroll
187cm/79kg
20/12/02
East Fremantle/Western Australia
Midfielder
A broken wrist late in the season cut Carroll's campaign short but he still tested at the WA Combine with his arm in a cast. Carroll is a player who works well in traffic, having played as a midfielder and also across half-back. The East Fremantle prospect wins his own touches and is comfortable being used in a few different roles.

Pick 6 – Gold Coast – Will Phillips
Pick 7 – Sydney – Braeden Campbell (matching bid)
Pick 8 – Essendon – Tanner Bruhn
Pick 9 – Essendon – Zach Reid
Pick 10 – Essendon – Finlay Macrae

Pick 12 – Adelaide – Archie Perkins
Pick 13 – GWS Giants – Oliver Henry

Pick 19 – GWS – Tom Powell
Pick 20 – Richmond – Eddie Ford

An already unpredictable draft is becoming even more so by the time we get to this point. Having taken some big inside mids recently, perhaps Richmond go in a different direction here and pick an athletic medium forward.
Pick 21 – Melbourne – Bailey Laurie
Pick 22 – Sydney – Errol Gulden (matching bid)
Pick 23 – Melbourne – Nathan O’Driscoll
Pick 24 – GWS Giants – Henry Walsh
Pick 25 – St Kilda – Jake Bowey

Hopefully Collingwood trade their next years 1st round pick for our pick 17.
All we need this year is to pick up Rioli and to promote a couple of rookies.
-
The Pies want to use their two first rounders to con North out of their pick 2.
As for us, I'd be holding onto our first. The lack of junior footy this year making it harder for recruiters could see a gun kid, who would normally push into the top 5-10 based on U18 champs and NAB league form, slip down to our pick 17.
-
What’s the chances North roll over and lose a chance to get a 200 game CHF,
remember when SYDNEY and Port offered two 1st round picks for a pick 3 Richmond had
Guess who we got for that pick
-
Sydney actually wanted pick 3 to gazump Freo for Morabito...they thought he was the next Goodes... :shh
-
Probably, but we used it on Dusty
-
Sydney actually wanted pick 3 to gazump Freo for Morabito...they thought he was the next Goodes... :shh
Incorrect - Kinnear Beatson is on record as saying they would have used in on Dusty. He’d seen him play more than most as he was Sydney based when with his Dad

Foxfooty.com.au looks at which draftee your club could target in the 2020 draft with their first pick.
RICHMOND
Draft picks: 17, 36, 61, 79, 97
Father-Son/Academy prospects: Maurice Rioli Jnr
Given Richmond has been an AFL powerhouse in recent years, the Tigers don’t have any huge needs at the draft and will have father-son Maurice Rioli Jnr joining them in the off-season.
They might take a punt on Kaine Baldwin, with the South Australian tearing another ACL in 2020 - his second in as many years. The 193cm tall was an All-Australian in his Under 16 year, but clubs will have very little information to go off if they are to select him. With a hole opening up inside 50 given Jack Riewoldt’s career being close to finishing, the Tigers might well look at Baldwin as the perfect option to develop under the star veteran and form a partnership with Tom Lynch for the future.

Q: Do Richmond go for a midfielder, given most good talls will be gone before their first pick?
Twomey: The midfielders potentially in that mix for the Tigers would be Powell, O'Driscoll, Carroll, Macrae, Trew. Also Zavier Maher and Sam Berry have their fans in the 20s part of the draft and are different players but both with some power.

Poor kid to have done two ACLs but IMO that makes him more a rookie pick even if he is the type of player we would be keen on. Harsh to say but more often than not two ACLs is footy career ending.
Wonder if our WA scouts are showing interested in Lachlan Vanirsen?
Having accepted his Jack Clarke Medal award earlier in the week as the fairest and best player in the colts competition for 2020, Lachlan Vanirsen is now the Mel Whinnen Medal winner as well after a brilliant Grand Final performance.
He finished with 32 possessions, 11 marks, five tackles and a goal to be judged best afield in the 59-point triumph for Subiaco.

Foxsports has mids Macrae, Carroll & Powell around our first pick.
18. Finlay Macrae
Clubs: Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro
Position: Midfielder
Size: 186cm/78kg
Bio: The Macrae name is certainly familiar, given Finlay’s older brother is Western Bulldogs star Jack. He’s a well balanced midfielder who accumulates the ball and disposes of it exceptionally well, making him someone you want to have the ball in their hands. While he doesn’t have breakaway speed, his decision making makes up for that when he’s around opponents. Macrae has a great endurance base and is very competitive.
19. Jack Carroll
Clubs: East Fremantle/Western Australia
Position: Midfielder
Size: 187cm/79kg
Bio: The 17-year-old can play a number of different roles given his feats playing across half back and in the midfield over recent years. After a full season of WAFL Colts footy, Carroll has lifted his prospects and averaged 23.1 disposals, using it reasonably well off his left boot. He also averaged 14.6 contested possessions, indicating he isn’t afraid to win his own ball.
20. Tom Powell
Clubs: Sturt/South Australia
Position: Midfielder
Size: 183cm/74kg
Bio: Powell has hardly put a foot wrong this year as he racked up disposal after disposal. His work at the stoppages is very good where he looks to find a teammate by hand. Powell’s footy IQ is elite, making him one of the smarter players through the middle. For Sturt this season, Powell averaged 157 Champion Data ranking points, 34.1 disposals and 8.4 clearances. He claimed the league’s McCallum Tomkins Medal after a starring year.

A few drafts have us taking Bailey Laurie, a small forward who sounds very similar to Jack Higgins.
I'm not sure why we would go that way unless he is by far the best player left at that pick.

This bloke reckons Essendon or Freo will put in an early bid for Maurice Rioli Jnr.
Who should your club take with their first pick in the AFL draft?
By Ed Carmine
zerohanger.com
November 24, 2020
Richmond (Pick 17) - Maurice Rioli Jr.
Vision: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv6RIpzEwiY
With another flag in the bag, things are looking rosy at Tigerland. With the recent news that Maurice Rioli Junior has nominated Richmond as his club of choice, excitement levels amongst the Tiger Army have reached fever pitch.
The son of a gun possesses the same bag of tricks as his father, so those that bore witness to Maurice Senior’s early eighties exploits, expect a repeat dosage from his offspring.
With ties to both Essendon and Fremantle, expect an early bid to be matched from the Tigers to secure the electrifying talent’s services.
Whether or not Daniel Rioli will vacate the number 17 guernsey and allow his cousin to follow in his father’s footsteps is still yet to be determined.

A few drafts have us taking Bailey Laurie, a small forward who sounds very similar to Jack Higgins.
I'm not sure why we would go that way unless he is by far the best player left at that pick.
HeraldSun's mock draft (above) has Laurie at our pick.
BAILEY LAURIE (OAKLEIGH CHARGERS)
Forward/midfielder/defender, 180cm, 75kg
Some recruiters are very bullish about Laurie, one believing he would be very high on the hit-lists of all 18 AFL clubs. Once a grunt midfielder in his earlier junior playing days, Laurie has developed into a multifaceted player who performed strongly as a high half-forward and midfielder for the Chargers last season.
He is considered to be a natural footballer who just “gets it” and is continuing to develop athletically. It’s his touch that is his X-Factor, though, as well as his ability to read the play and execute skills with class. Across seven NAB League games last year, Laurie averaged 15.3 disposals at elite efficiency of 76.6 per cent, as well as 3.1 marks, 3.6 tackles and 90 SuperCoach ranking points. He also kicked six goals, including two in the NAB League Grand Final.

Leading Patterns
Brayden has had a rapid rise up the ranks this year, mainly due to being able to play while others could not, but his own game and game style improved out of site, reflecting said rise.
Each year there is a bolter or two and Cook, this year, is one i really like at this pick for Richmond.
His upside looks to be big, and his AFL style traits are there for all to see.
His attacking drive when in possession, with the ability to move through traffic is a sight to see.
The modern day height for a midfielder will entice clubs to see if he can translate his outside game to an inside one also.
He can win his own ball, and although the stats do not show it, his tackling, whilst it could improve in numbers, is ferocious. He has the ability to win a game off his own boot, and whilst he has kicked a few behinds as well, its his attack on the goal face that is a pleasure to watch.
He wants and wills his own team to win the game and it is infectious among team mates.
Away from goals, his nous to find space and use good leading patterns is eye-catching as is his burst from a pack when with or without possession.
Without possession he uses his game smarts and ability to read the play to not only spread well into space but create space for team mates and link up in a chain of play from the back line to the forward line, proving his ability to play the wings quite well.
His hands in marking contests are fantastic for a player of his position, averaging around 7 marks a game, and coupled with his ability to hit the scoreboard, (averaging 2 goals per game) his forward ability shines through.
He has had a big growth spurt this year not only in height but he has put on the weight as well so is more ready to get to work than some others in his position who may need a few years to bulk up a bit. I don't think his growth has finished yet either, leaving him to be a pick that i think fits this position for Richmond. He is a Richmond style player and an enticing prospect that i could not leave on the board for anyone else.
Luckily enough Richmond have many positions covered and are going well as a team putting them in a position to grab Brayden here (if only in this draft) as an exciting prospect for the future, and have one of the biggest improvers of the year who not only has grown his game but also his body, with a high ceiling and talent to boot.

Has footy nouse, good ball use and applies run down tackles.

According to Callum Twomey:
10. Tanner Bruhn
Considered by clubs to be more unlikely than likely to feature in the top 10, although the Bombers and Giants do have an interest. North is a chance, but could he get to Richmond at No.17?
15. Finlay Macrae
The Bombers have shown some interest in Macrae, while Adelaide and North Melbourne will consider. Richmond, Melbourne and St Kilda are others deeper in the first round who will look closely in the possibility he slips, which is a chance if he doesn't go early.
18. Brayden Cook
The Magpies are a chance, as are Richmond at pick 17. St Kilda will also take a look, while the Crows and Dockers are also in the mix.
23. Bailey Laurie
Likely to fit in somewhere at the back end of the first round or early in the second. GWS and Melbourne have been linked, while Richmond could also have a dip.

Foxsports' round 1 prediction has us taking Matt Allison.
Early Mail: Who YOUR club is considering drafting in the first round of the AFL Draft
Matt Balmer
December 4, 2020 12:47pm
FOX SPORTS
PICK 21: RICHMOND – MATT ALLISON
Clubs: Calder Cannons/Vic Metro
Position: Key Forward
Size: 194cm/81kg
Bio: Allison is one of the top talls who has a stack of scope for improvement. He can get up and down the ground using his strong endurance base, which is also matched by a good acceleration when on a lead. He has been used as a midfielder on the outside at times and still has untapped potential there if a club think they can develop him further. He is very raw and his numbers in the NAB League suggest that, but there are plenty of clubs tracking the Victorian.
In the mix: Richmond’s pick is one of the hardest in the first round to predict given they have no pressing needs. They have been linked with a few of the taller prospects in Allison and Liam Kolar from Northern Knights. It might be a touch early for either, but given the age profile of the Tigers another young forward wouldn’t be the worst option. Don’t rule the Tigers out of trading the selection into the second round or into 2021.

Wouldn't be surprised if we do a live trade involving pick 17.... :shh
-
If we can get 2 picks in the 20 range early 30 I would consider it very even draft.

Wouldn't mind if we traded it for a couple of next year's seconds with say Norf....gonna be a bumper crop...not just with the quality of next year's kids but the law of averages says there should be a few high quality left overs from this year too....blokes who would've been drafted or "bolters" this year had they been playing and there were no list reductions...also gives us a stronger hand if we want to trade up or we're targeting a player we'll need to trade for... :shh

No mention of us being linked to any of Foxsports' top 20.

Twomey has us getting Macrae at our first pick.
Callum Twomey's 2020 Phantom draft: Top 30
By Callum Twomey
afl.com.au
8 December 2020
THERE are a number of reasons that makes this perhaps the most uncertain NAB AFL Draft ever.
With a lack of football due to COVID-19, combined with the most compromised pool in history, recruiters who have watched games from afar and no NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, there are many varied views on players.
Add to that the presence of Jamarra Ugle-Hagan at the top end of the pool as a Next Generation Academy pick, injury concerns over other No.1 pick contenders, six clubs having multiple first-round selections and plenty of potential pick swaps lined up, and clubs will go into Wednesday night's draft with little clarity how it will unfold.
Here is our Phantom Draft top 30, as we predict where players will go, who will make bids on Academy prospects and how the top group will shape up. Note the draft order has changed in line with predictions on clubs moving up the order to match bids.
Below the top 30, AFL.com.au has also listed club-by-club whispers on who each team could target in the back half of the draft.
1. W.Bulldogs Jamarra UGLE-HAGAN
2. Adelaide Riley THILTHORPE
3. North Melb. Elijah HOLLANDS
4. Sydney Denver GRAINGER-BARRAS
5. Hawthorn Logan MCDONALD
6. Gold Coast Will PHILLIPS
7. Essendon Tanner BRUHN
8. Essendon Zach REID
9. Sydney Braeden CAMPBELL .... (matching Ess bid)
10. Essendon Oliver HENRY
11. Adelaide Reef MCINNES .... (Coll doesn't match Adel bid)
12. GWS Giants Nik COX
13. North Melb. Tom POWELL
14. Fremantle Brayden COOK
15. GWS Gaints Heath CHAPMAN
16. Collingwood Archie PERKINS
17. Port Adelaide Lachie JONES .... (matching GWS bid)
18. GWS Giants Bailey LAURIE
19. Collingwood Conor STONE
20. Richmond Finlay MACRAE
POS: Midfielder
Ht 186cm, Wt 78kg, DOB 13/3/02
From Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro
Macrae averaged 17 disposals a game in the NAB League last year playing mainly off a half-forward flank, and was due for far more time in the midfield in 2020. Everything Macrae does has polish: he can use the ball well on both feet and is also handy when he shifts forward. The younger brother of Western Bulldogs star Jack, Macrae is a very good size for a midfielder and impacts games with his touches. Ran 6:17 minutes in the 2km time trial. The rich would get richer if this one comes off.
If not him? The Tigers can sit pretty and see if Macrae is available. They have been linked as possible bidders on Swans Academy prospect Errol Gulden, while Conor Stone is another who looms as a chance. Max Holmes is a tiny chance if things fall a certain way.
22. Melbourne Jack CARROLL
22. Sydney Errol GULDEN .... (matching Melb bid)
23. Melbourne Max HOLMES
24. GWS Giants Luke PEDLAR
25. Hawthorn Connor DOWNIE .... (matching StK bid)
26. St Kilda Nathan O'DRISCOLL
27. Adelaide Caleb POULTER
28. Adelaide Liam KOLAR
29. Brisbane Jake BOWEY
30. GWS Giants Shannon NEALE

Recruiting sources have also indicated that Geelong and West Coast are interested in trading back into the first round, while Richmond are open to trading out their first-round pick, which is currently No.17.

Foxfooty.com.au understands other potential deals in the works include:
- Richmond could trade out 17 and move out of the first round (current picks: 17, 36, 61, 79)
- St Kilda is looking to move up from their first selection of 21 (current picks: 21, 64, 67, 74)
- Adelaide could package 22 and 23 and move either up or down the order (current picks: 1, 9, 22, 23, 40, 80)
- Melbourne may send out 28 for a pick in next year’s draft (current picks: 18, 19, 28, 50)

Sounds like we'll probably hold onto our first pick and see what is available when it's our turn. If no one we're really keen on slips to our pick or we think we can get the kid we want later on in the draft then we'll probably trade it out or move back.
-
The Age has us taking Tom Powell with our first pick at 21
21. Richmond
Tom Powell (midfielder)
Sturt/Scotch College (SA), 183cm, 74kg
The South Australian was something of a bolter this year, returning from injury to dominate at South Australian under-18 level. He is the son of former Crows player Matt Powell. It wouldn't be a shock if he was already gone though, in which case Finlay Macrae would be tempting if not taken earlier. Powell could easily be snapped up already by North too, in which case it would be Archie Perkins who could well slide down the order.

Would be happy with Powell.
Perkins could slip given he's admitted on SEN today he's told all the interstate clubs he prefers to stay in Victoria.

Twomey, reporting Carlton coming hard for our pick 17.

Traded our first for Geelong's future first rounder.

Insurance for the younger Naish brother?
Next year's draft is meant to be stronger too.
-
Traded our first for Geelong's future first rounder.
Please explain? Anyone? Logic behind it?
-
Can only guess the kids we rated were gone by our pick. If Macrae had lasted one more pick I reckon we don't trade it.
Having said that why trade with the Cats who should play finals again when the Pies' future first was clearly on offer who could slide in 2021???
-
Yeah pretty dumb trading with Cats.
-
Maybe the Cats will tank next year and it'll be pick 1. Live in hope.
-

Or Geelong get caught cheating and get all their points taken off them. Then pick #1 to us......
Ok l will have another beer
-
Who knows if pies pick was on offer tho to us.I not sold on cats making top 4 to be honest like some a here I reckon great bit of business by us and it would not suprise me if pies finish higher on the ladder then cats.

If we didnt rate any kids after our first pick id say we havent done due diligence even in a covid affected season.

Why? Wouldn't you back in our team who have done a pretty good job in recent times?

I'd argue the fact we made the choice to trade that first pick, means they did indeed do their due diligence on this year's draft crop and next year's

Mate that's uneducated comment our recruitment team build our list that's delivered 3 flags so I back them you make no sense at all even through we won 3 flags you have very little positive to say.

Yes I didn't understand it but thankfully people explained why, the logic behind it without the need to belittle about my lack of knowledge around the strategy

on another thread people were shaking their heads at the logic in trading to geelong but now back flip.
To flippantly say the kids we liked were all gone by our pick and there was no one left worth taking is a nonsense. The only thing that will determine if we got it right by opting out is time.If we didnt rate any kids at that point the you have to ask did we do the work.
Unlike most blind rabid one eyed supporters i dont buy into the fact our recruiters are infallible or they dont get things wrong. I dont buy into the argument that all our players are stars and cant be upgraded on. What utter nonsense that sort of thinking is and that is exactly how people are coming across.
Personally think that we are entitled to have one more crack at a flag with our now ageing stars. But fmd addressing real long term needs is also a priority
Lastly i have never ever been a proponent of opting out of the first round of drafts. opting out for Geelongs first pick next yr doesnt make sense.
If you dont question anything at all then of course everything is going to come across as good. There is always an opposite view to what is done and if you dont weigh both sides of the coin up then you end up with a skewered view.
It is simple did we do the right thing in trading out of the first round? was there still really good kids there worth taking? just be honest with yourselves and make your own minds up rather than leaning on oh i trust the club they never get anything wrong.

Makes all the sense in the world if you believe next years draft as better. Also, to my understanding next years draft is less compromised with only one like bid for Nick Daicos to Pies. Thus, even if Cats win the flag, we’d have pick 19 in a stronger draft.
Add to that the two picks in the second and two picks in the third give us ample assets to address long-term needs next season.
I see your point but if you believe keeping the pick would net you a B Grade player and next year you could get two A grade players (or even put you in a position to nab an A grade player by trading up) you’d do the trade unquestionably.
-
1st round picks are immune from the academy matching bids only f&s bids only next year. So Geelongs pick 15 (assuming they finish 4th) will be better than our pick 20 this year.
Speculating that Daicos is a top 10 pick then that will have no bearing on our picks.
-
Claw seems to have it all worked out guys. He clearly knows better than the administrators of a club that has won 3 of the last 4 flags....

Very good point plus I think the NAB cup is U-19 and thus we will have an extra year of development and viewing.

Can you please clarify how this works to me?
Does this mean we can bid on NGA kids and not get matched by clubs with lower picks? For example Crows could have taken JUH this year at #1?

correct, only in the 1st round though

If you step back a look at the big picture, it actually makes no sense why people are STILL questioning our recruitment or FJ for that matter.
When he joined, there were ZERO resources being put into recruitment so he was largely a lone ranger compared to other clubs.
Then, he (they) had 2 new clubs come in and take half the decent picks.
So, what the recruitment team has delivered, both under and alongside FJ is a stunning success.
Anyone can pot a bad recruitment call - if i could be bothered i am certain Craws calls would make for interesting reading.
But it’s a collaboration between list management, player development and the coaching staff - the best in the competition and really any other analysis invites forest vs trees lack of vision

20min quarters and a longer season should work against those geriatrics...
-
That will make top 8 for sure .. hope I’m wrong though lol

All clubs have regular howlers, check out Hawthorn 2005 and they had a very well resourced recruiting dept.
Pick 3 X. Ellis
pick 6 B. Dowler
pick 14 G. Birchall
pick 16 M. Bailey
Pick 22 B. Muston
pick 38 T. Tuck
For the record I believe that our trade with Geelong will be part of a regeneration of our list in 2021 to set us up for the years ahead.
-
I wonder if we did this because we think the younger Naish brother will be bid on late first round next year which would force us to use our first pick. By having two first rounders we could combine them to trade inside the top 10 to draft another top kid and use one of our second rounders to match a bid on Naish if it comes late first round.

It's going to be interesting this year to see if we just stick to the draft with those early picks or have we got any salary cap space to chase a quality opposition player via a trade or as a free agent (the latter won't cost us a pick).
-
Word is Cerra & Tucker want out from Freo and it's between us & Geelong... :shh

Pass on Cerra best way to describe is a neat player not someone that you would pay good picks for.
Big depth on midfielders this year, with our first round picks we could pick up two players equally as good as Cerra

We should keep our picks and draft the next generation of Richmond premiership players. We have a fantastic draft hand.
-
Yep free agents & hit the draft... if anything we should be looking to even further strengthen out draft hand..........certainly hope we don't go blowing our picks on Cerra ... I'd maybe consider one first as part of a trade for someone like Sam Taylor but rather try and get it done with say Jack Ross and a future first or something like that....plus we'll be getting Tom Green in a couple of years anyway... :shh

Dont understand the want for tom green. He is very slow from what ive seen.
