33 next Anzac Day...what are we stuffing Geelong now? :facepalm
-
Honestly don't mind him & Tahlia. Cost nothing in trades or picks. If they can stay fit they're great players.
And by the way, FU Norf.
-
Brian Lake won 3 flag's going the Hawks at 31.
-
32 to old rather Talia at 30.

I don't get this.Surly Astbury had a better understanding and jel with our current group and is no slower. ?????

True story, even the above article mentions Astbury “knocked back a contract to stay”
-
While you have Cotchin, Jack etc why wouldn't you load up in areas of deficiency.
-
Astbury knew he was slow and stuffed.
Houli didn't know, but he was just as bad.
Tarrant has stayed on the park quite consistently. Missed 1 game in each of the last 2 seasons with the exception of recovery from kidney surgery. Could potentially be a better option than Talia.
-
We are on the way down gents. This reeks if old richmond. A bad decision. 100% bad decision.
-
Talia or Tarrant provide time for Miller and Nyuon to continue their development. They are both 1-2 years away from senior footy- 22+ game season at the highest level. We still have an extremely strong list however with Astbury hanging up the boots it does leave us a little exposed down back. This is why the club offered a further year to Asbury as they know this. Prudent play to get one of them in me thinks :shh

Agreed. Not worth overreacting about it’s just an immediate fix for a glaring issue on our list. Might even draft a key position player or two this year.

Miller deserves his chance
Yes, but four games in and he looks like Ryan did last year, then what :huh
-
lol people crying over us taking a f/a filling a gaping hole in the list in the short term for nothing.
Last time i looked clubs dont just throw away young kpp"s.
People crying about Miller not getting a game is crazy. Fmd he has already been demoted from the list to a rookie spot and in a season where we were decimated down back managed just one token game in round 23. How anyone can be sure he will even make it yet alone stay on the list as he is uncontracted is beyond me.
Tarrant and Talia one of as a free agent is smart especially if they think they can still win another flag. Even if they dont think that its still smart as the cupboard is bare when it comes to big kpd on the list who are up to standard there is only Balta.
Im all for taking one of Talia or Tarrant and we target with pick 26 a kid like Rhett Bazzo in the nd. We would not even be having this discussion if there was a couple of juniors on the list who look capable of taking over from Astbury sorry but that is the reality atm.

Not all that in favour getting Talia either...but surely it makes more sense to go for the bloke that we won't need to trade for and is 3 years younger? :shh

As a free agent on 1 oct he could walk to us but we always do the right thing.
Maybe CC-J and pick #? to Nm for Tarrant and 20.

With CCJ now out of the way watch Miller become a forward, played allot ip there this year in the VFL.

Maybe they did a medical with talia and had some concerns.
Otherwise would make more sense to go for a guy 2-3 years younger who has already been delisted.

North Melbourne veteran Robbie Tarrant has notified club officials he intends to join Richmond as an unrestricted free agent.
Foxfooty.com.au can confirm the 32-year-old intends to join the Tigers.
As an unrestricted free agent, Richmond will not have to sacrifice any draft capital to acquire Tarrant’s services.
The free agency period begins the Friday after the Grand Final.
Richmond key defender David Astbury has hung up the boots, with Tarrant set to replace the premiership player in the lineup next year.
Tarrant has played 174 games across 12 years for the Roos, with 10 of them coming in the backend of this year after surgery to remove a lump from his kidney in March held him back from an earlier return.

Sam Edmund says we're chosen Tarrant ahead of Talia.

TARRANT TO JOIN RICHMOND AS UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT
By Sam Edmund
SEN
18 September 2021
Robbie Tarrant has told North Melbourne he wants out.
It can be revealed Tarrant has informed Kangaroos teammates and officials he will next month leave the club as an unrestricted free agent.
The veteran defender is poised to sign a two-year contract at Richmond, who have chosen Tarrant over delisted Crow Daniel Talia as a replacement for the retired David Astbury.
North Melbourne was initially only willing to offer Tarrant, 32, a one-year deal to play on at Arden Street.
But while that offer was subsequently increased to two years, Tarrant made the decision to chase a premiership at Richmond.
Tarrant can walk to Punt Road for nothing when the free agency window opens on October 1.
But Richmond will be wary Tarrant’s arrival could cancel out the free agency compensation they would receive for Mabior Chol’s departure to Gold Coast on a four-year deal.
It’s a scenario that might see the Tigers willing to trade with North given another Tiger tall, Callum Coleman-Jones, wants a move to the Kangaroos.

I don't mind this.
Effectively Chol for Tarrant. If we get our rucks in order, Chol is no where near best 22 and I can't see him being a top 4 best 22 player at any age. 2 years is fine he had a kidney operation which was successful so his body in terms of footy hasn't got any issues coming into the club, when you consider we drafted in Lynch and Prestia with knee injuries. Plus fills the spot on the list that Dave left.
No issues from me this trade, we have a stocked hand of draft picks, and have a solid 20-25 year bracket of players, both unlike Geelong. Anyone suggesting we are like Geelong are way off. Good stuff RFC.
-
We are on the way down gents. This reeks if old richmond. A bad decision. 100% bad decision.
Ramps I respectfully disagree. We have 1 options, do a Hawthorn (Lake, Frawley) and try to grasp another tilt with a successful core or do we do a St.Kilda and cash in on twilight players and rebuild (Goddard, Dal Santo). I'd chose the Hawks method. You could also argue Hawks method of doing a St.Kilda by offloading older guys (Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell) and bring in younger guys has failed massively with O'Meara, Mitchell, Scully etc.
Geelong have failed cause they haven't drafted as well as they should have. They have a rubbish midfield and stuff around with Danger up forward for far too long. As well as a possession game plan that simply doesn't stack up in finals, and even worse against our pressure game plan.
Prefer to do this and stay relevant than drop to bottom 6 hoping our development works again.

Yes, but four games in and Tarrant breaks down or it soon becomes clear he's well past it, then what? :huh
This is crystal ball gazing. He hasn't shown to be breaking down. Played every game after kidney surgery. No different to anyone else going down, I wouldn't put him as a risk. Talia I would as he is coming off injuries.
-
Tarrant looks like a solid, experienced defender to me. Fits right into a gaping big hole we got.

Sheesh just realised we would be trading for him rather Talia if fit.

I'd prefer to get him in a trade with CCJ so we get Chol comp which will be 2nd rounder, unsure what pick as we have about 4 lol.
So CCJ for Tarrant and Pick 36 and we get Chol 2nd rounder compo which is pick 28 say.
Chol and CCJ for pick 36 and 28 isn't world ending. Especially when at one stage CCJ could be going Pre Season draft for nothing and Chol being an ex rookie could have gone for no compo.

You're correct it is indeed "crystal ball gazing" - as is worrying that Miller might serve up doughnuts in round 4... :shh

Happy with this make no mistake his a quality defender one of the best stoppers , but he can actually play to and gets footy. We need a few talls can't just draft the kids fill in the hole.

We won’t be getting a second round compo for Chol. It will be end of third round at the earliest which is fair enough IMO.
I don’t actually have an issue with going for Tarrant or any experienced player such as him. I just don’t know about offering a 32/33 year old a 2 year deal.

"We're disappointed that Robbie has chosen not to accept our contract offer," North football manager Brady Rawlings said.
"We wanted to see Robbie remain a one-club player given what he has done for our football club.
"After overcoming injuries in the early part of his career, Robbie has gone on to be a great contributor for North Melbourne over a long period of time.
"Robbie has been an elite defender in the competition and has provided us with great leadership and spirit.
"He has been popular with our fans, his teammates and everyone involved with the club, so it'll be hard to see him in opposing colours, but we wish him well."

By Michael Gleeson in The Age.
TIGER TARRANT
Free agent Robbie Tarrant is a very clever signing by Richmond. He is a chance for a flag at the Tigers in the next two years, not at North Melbourne. The Roos might even get a compensation pick for losing him.
Tarrant is the ready-made replacement for the retired David Astbury to play alongside Dylan Grimes and keep the same structure in place they have had. With Noah Balta coming back from injury, Tarrant gives the Tigers the option of using Grimes and Balta in attacking roles while Tarrant can lock away the best opposition key forward.

Reckon Chol compensation will be at the end of round two at this stage i think it would be around pick 39. We could get pick 38 for CC-J But North may just take him in the PSD.
Trade for Taarant guarantees we get pick 39? to go with 38 ccj and our pick 40. Pick 38, 39 40 all in a row would be nice.

Tim Watson thinks Tarrant and the Tigers are a “good fit” for a season or two, while Kane Cornes also likes the move.
“I do like it for Tarrant because he’s played in four finals,” Cornes told SEN Breakfast.
“Richmond’s going to have one last crack … so I like it.”
Richmond reportedly met with former Adelaide defender Daniel Talia before deciding to pursue Tarrant.
“For Talia, he’s only 29 years of age. He’ll find somewhere. I’m not exactly sure what club it will be,” Cornes said.
“They (Richmond) prioritised Tarrant so it leaves Daniel Talia a bit lost for at least a couple of weeks.”
Watson: “Would Geelong be looking at Talia, now do you think, as a full-back, key position player?”
Lyon: “I don’t think he’s what they would need down there, another 30-plus (player).
“(Nathan) Kreuger, the young boy down there that’s played two games who’s got a bit of size, at some time you’ve got to bite the bullet and play these guys, otherwise they’re going to leave. You’ve got to give them an opportunity.”
Watson: “I understand that. But if we use their history as any guide, 29 is a young recruit for the Cats.”

Wonder if the club wants his as depth/mentor for a guy like Miller/Biggie...
...or are they backing the list in for another tilt?
I hope it's a tilt, even if another flag costs us 30 more years in the cellar.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has hailed the recruiting of AFL free agent Robbie Tarrant, saying the North Melbourne veteran will revitalise their defence.
“That [free agent] period is yet to open, the free agency window. But obviously with Dave retiring, we felt we had a need for a bigger body-type defender,” Hardwick said.
“I think that will allow Dylan Grimes and Noah Balta to be a little bit freer down there. Dylan’s done an incredible job ever since the retirement of Alex (Rance) maintaining that back six, but he’s really capable of playing some really damaging footy for us as well getting a little bit higher up the ground.
“I’m really excited by bringing in Robbie that will allow us to explore the avenue of others as well. I think our forwards are pretty keen to get Robbie out of North Melbourne too because he does a hell of a job.
“He’s 32, but he’s missed a lot of footy at the start of this year and we think he’s got some really good footy in front of him.”

On Sportsday, Matthew Lloyd posed the question to Sam McClure regarding Richmond’s intentions.
Lloyd said: “The Robbie Tarrant move to Richmond, do you see that as North messing him around and he says I’m leaving?
“Or a player who says if I’m any chance of success, I’ve just got to take this and go to Richmond, potentially with a year left to have a crack at it.”
Sam McClure says the Tigers have made an experienced key defender a priority to replace the retired David Astbury, even asking the question of former Giants co-captain Phil Davis along with reported interest in departed Adelaide veteran Daniel Talia.
“I thinks it’s the latter,” he said in response to Lloyd.
“They were clearly looking at Daniel Talia. I think they’ve asked the question around Phil Davis, who’s got a really weird situation surrounding his supposed contract at GWS. Trying to work that one out.
“But clearly they’ve arrived on Tarrant. They needed some help down back.”
In response to that discussion, Gerard Healy has endorsed Richmond’s pursuit of Tarrant despite him entering his 13th season.
“It’s a big pick-up,” said the Brownlow Medallist.
“Robbie Tarrant is one of the best defenders the game has seen for a decade. He’s been playing in one of the worst sides of the last decade.
“He hasn’t been carried along with momentum, but if you wanted to pick up a bloke even at his age and stick him into a potential premiership side, I think he’s a fair way ahead of the other two (Talia and Davis).”

Should Richmond receive a compensation pick for Chol, its acquisition of North Melbourne veteran Robbie Tarrant would come as a trade. Any incoming free agents can offset compensation received for outgoing free agents.

Yes, however North would only entertain a trade for Tarrant if they were convinced they would get zero compo...
...and knowing the AFL with their secret formula that would probably ensure North get something.

From a North supporter ...
I think you’ll find a number of North posters offering a very late pick to get it done in good faith, that’s the mark and good on us for the generous offer.
The tigers should be concentrating on how to get Tarrant via trade, that’s where the value is in saving the Chol compo.
Just a note, the tigers poached a required player and part of the leadership team. Let’s not pretend the tigers have morals. Tarrant leaves with our blessing as we need to refresh up the backline anyway, but it doesn’t discount it’s a dog act.

Just so I am clear this required player, member of their leadership team was so important to N0rt they offered him a one year contract and it wasn't until he was approached by Richmond they upped their offer.
Yep they've treated him exceptionally well ::)

Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt has endorsed the club’s move for North Melbourne’s Robbie Tarrant.
The 32-year-old defender is expected to join the Tigers as an unrestricted free agent this trade period having informed the Kangaroos of his plans to move on from Arden Street.
The impending capture of Tarrant has been welcomed by Riewoldt who feels the 174-game backman will be the perfect replacement for the retired David Astbury.
“He’s going to be a good addition to our football club, if it all goes through which I think will happen pretty seamlessly,” he said on SEN Hobart’s Jack & Painey.
“Robbie Tarrant is going to be a great addition to the Richmond Football Club. A big, strong key back. He’s had a few health issues over the last 12 months, which are behind him now.
“I found him difficult to play on. He belted me one day, an absolute ripper, clocked me over the head when I took a mark. I wasn’t too rapt about that, I might have had a few words back about that one so I’ll have to smooth the waters early on with him.
“Hopefully with him coming in to fill the Astbury void, they’ll be big shoes to fill, and obviously strengthen up our backline as well.”

Richmond are set to welcome in North Melbourne defender Robbie Tarrant and are keen to do so via a trade, as opposed to free agency, as to not impact their compensation for losing Mabior Chol to the Gold Coast Suns.
North Melbourne list boss Glenn Luff told AFL Trade Radio recently that Tarrant would likely be exiting the club through a trade agreement.
“We’re not entirely sure (if the Tigers will trade for Tarrant). That’s probably the gut feel at the moment,” hinting an outcome could be revealed “in the next couple of days.”
Tarrant and Coleman-Jones look set to be part of two different deals with the two clubs still having a way to go before finding a middle ground.

If its real short term thinking we are doing with the aim of winning a flag next year then id be taking Talia as well as Tarrant. Take him on a 1 yr deal and if he goes alright give him another if we wish.
Now before everyone starts howling like rabid dogs at me for being so foolish here are the reasons why.
Basically its two things we are bereft of key forwards apart from 33 yr old Riewoldt and Lynch turns 30 next yr there really is no one else.
With both Talia and Tarrant holding down the key defensive posts it allows two things.
We move Balta fwd i have been against this in the past mainly because we have not had good enough Kpds to allow us to make the move. The reality was there was only Astbury with Balta and Astbury is now gone. Talia replaces Astbury and Tarrant takes Balta's spot.
This also allows us to get rid of Garthwaite who is a list clogger and it allows more time For Nyuon to develop and it allows Miller the same.
If Miller shows he is good enough to keep one of Tarrant or Talia out of the side then its a win but he is still miles behind both and may not even survive being cut this trade period.
Cmon people it makes sense. We are having one last throw of the dice Tarrant and Talia cost virtually nothing other than their contracts.
It gives youngsters more needed time to develop and it doesnt hurt us with the draft hand we have, we are going primarily youth with picks 7, 15 hopefully 17 26, 28 38chol whatever we get for cc-j 42 and 47.we are going to take more than our share of kids and we are getting them with good picks .
OUR STRUCTURE FOR 2022
B: #### - Talia - Grimes
HB: Broad - Tarrant - #### just an opinion but both Talia and Tarrant have been better players than Astbury.
C: #### - Martin - ####
R: Nankervis - #### - ####
HF: #### - Balta - Riewoldt
FF: #### - Lynch - ####
INT/ Soldo -
What is needed is another quality mid or two.
Anyway thats the logic if its one more throw of the dice then this is the way to go imo.
We shore up our key defensive stocks in the short term and we find a badly needed key fwd option possibly even in the long term.
With this if Jack or big Tom get badly injured we have a decent player in the team to ease the load.
-
Were not getting Tahlia, chose Tarrant I believe
-
Were not getting Tahlia, chose Tarrant I believe
Sheesh its like pulling teeth i said Talia as well if its a flag we are chasing next yr. We do this to allow Balta to play fwd and give us some depth and cover in that area.
-
I like you lateral thinking on this one. I don’t think Balta is good enough as a KPF to play 22 games in the forward like though. I fear in this hypothetical it would end up like the Geelong experiment of Harry Taylor in the forward line. But I agree with the sentiment that if we seriously think a flag is attainable in 2022 then something creative has to happen because natural development and improvement of kids might not fix our forward line.
That being said the jump from 2016 to 17 was massive so maybe with the right coaching it can?
-
I like your thinking too Claw.
Talia I think failed the medical with RFC, hence we went for Tarrant.
Can Miller play in a backline that has Grimes, Tarrant, Broad and Vlastuin to mentor/protect him?

What each 2021 AFL trade recruit will bring to their new club

Robbie Tarrant - An incredibly durable defender, Tarrant provides reinforcement down back for the Tigers after the retirements of Bachar Houli and David Astbury. Aside from a scary medical issue in March, which required a tumour to be removed from his kidney and forced him to miss the first half of the season, Tarrant missed just six games in the previous six seasons. He won a best-and-fairest at North and can consider himself a tad unlucky to be overlooked for All-Australian selection in the past. His recruitment at the age of 32 is a statement that the Tigers clearly believe they’re still in contention for a flag, and who could blame them with 22 premiership players still on their list?

From Barrett's 'Sliding Doors' column:
IF ...
Robbie Tarrant has been in the AFL system for 14 seasons (drafted by the Roos at No.15, 2007)...
THEN ...
his 15th year, and first as a Tiger, could be the one he finally gets an All-Australian jacket. Has deserved at least one, and probably two, to this point.

Hardwick hails Tigers’ Tarrant acquisition
“With Dave (Astbury) retiring we felt we had a need for a bigger-bodied defender. And I think that will allow Dylan Grimes and Noah Balta to be a little bit freer down there,” Hardwick said on Fox Footy.
“Dylan’s done an incredible job ever since the retirement of Alex (Rance), maintaining that back six. But he’s capable of getting a little bit higher up the ground and playing some really damaging footy us.
“So, I’m really excited by bringing Robbie in that it will allow us to explore the avenue of others as well.
“And I think our forwards were pretty keen to get Robbie out of the North Melbourne team as well because he does a hell of a job.
“He’s 32, but he missed a lot of footy at the start of his career and we think he’s got some really, really good footy in front of him.”

New Richmond defender, Robbie Tarrant, spoke to Matthew Richardson about his first few weeks as a Tiger.
Tough decision to leave North Melbourne?
"Really tough, I've been there for 14 years and have got really good relationships with the players and staff and supporters as well. To make the move across, although it's exciting to start fresh and meet new people, it's also a little bit sad to leave that part of my career behind. I've got amazing memories there, and I'm really thankful to the club for everything they've done for me over the 14 years and wish them all the best into the future."
How did the move come about?
"Finishing the year, I thought I'd be staying at North and then Blair (Hartley) got in touch with my manager and it just rolled from there. It happens a lot quicker than you think it would...I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into the next couple of years and seeing what we can do."
What excites you about coming to Richmond?
"Being a really successful team, especially over the last five years, I'm excited to learn how they go about things, learn a different game style, and learn off the other defenders down there. They've got some really good defenders that I think can help my game and try and take me to another level which I'm really excited about."
Looking forward to playing more games at the MCG?
"We normally get the one game a year there, so it's an unbelievable opportunity to play there every second week, I'm really looking forward to getting out there...I'm really excited about that opportunity."
What will be your defensive role at Tigerland?
"I haven't got the detail of exactly what the role looks like, but I'll be down the defensive end and try and work in well with Grimes and Vlastuin and Balta and those guys. I'll try and play a role for the team and hopefully do it to a good level."
Introduction to new teammates?
"I've been lucky that over the last week or two I've been able to come in and meet a few of the boys and start training. It's been a really good introduction, the boys have been really welcoming and made me feel really comfortable. We're getting some good numbers in and the boys are training really hard, so it's exciting to hopefully start pre-season and get all the boys back and get stuck into it."
Did you know any of the players personally before arriving at the Club?
"Not really, being around for a while, I've played on Jack (Riewoldt) most times we've played Richmond, so you play build little relationships, and I was drafted the same year as Trent. I'm looking forward to building those relationships over the next couple of years."
How does the body feel, do you think you can play longer than two years?
"I hope so. I love playing and I'm really motivated to improve as a player. My body feels really good, I think the last two years with having limited games, I missed 10 last year, and the limited season the year before, has probably helped me. Hopefully, that extends me on the backend of my career."

Win-win: Roo-turned-Tiger Tarrant ideal for contending Richmond
Michael Gleeson
The Age
December 19, 2021
Next year, barring injury, Robbie Tarrant will play more games at the MCG with Richmond in one season than he did in his first 12 years with North Melbourne.
Tarrant reckons he played 11, maybe 12, games at the ’G across his North career. The Tigers have 14 games at the MCG next year. That’s before finals.
On one hand, it’s a sort of quirky bit of trivia that means nothing, and on the other hand, it means everything. It is emblematic of his shift from off Broadway to on. It’s a physical move across town to a club that hopes and expects to play finals and contend for a flag next year, having left a club that hopes and expects they are on the path to doing the same thing, just in a much longer time frame.
Tarrant never really planned or expected to move clubs, but his shift from North Melbourne to Richmond was the sort of rare football-list management serendipity that made it an obvious decision. One club that was not contending could benefit from easing some salary cap space, and one club that is contending keeps its window for success open. Win, win.

“I didn’t think I’d be changing clubs to be honest. Even finishing last season, I had every intention of signing on and never had any intention of going to another club,” Tarrant said.
“I didn’t have a deal [to re-sign at North] until post-season and as North were coming with that, Richmond made an approach. I think it worked out for both.”
Tarrant didn’t have players explicitly in mind when contemplating how a shift for a player of his experience and position could work, but there is an obvious parallel with a player like James Frawley in his shift from Melbourne to Hawthorn. At the time, he went as a free agent and a bit younger than Tarrant, but he went to Hawthorn to replace a retiring premiership full-back and fit into a role and play. And win a premiership.
Frawley helped keep the Hawks in contention. Tarrant could be Richmond’s version, and that was the Tigers’ plan in getting him.
Richmond had known from early in the year that David Astbury was probably going to retire so made approaches to Tarrant’s manager, as they had many times during his career. List manager Blair Hartley is an avowed fan.
The Tigers wanted to adopt that Frawley model and not see their period of contention close with Astbury’s retirement, Noah Balta coming off long-term injury and their kids unlikely to be ready to have an immediate impact.
The fact the Tigers had five early picks in the draft, and indeed could secure star young key defender Josh Gibcus with their first pick this year, made the idea of blending a veteran and kids that much easier. (As an aside, Gibcus came second in the club’s 4x1-kilometre time trials of first-to-fourth-year players last week. He is 196 centimetres. He beat the midfielders.)
The sell to convince Tarrant was simple – come and play the same role you have at North, and hopefully, we win a flag together.
“I would love to get back to playing finals footy again, that was certainly a discussion with Richmond,” Tarrant said. “I was fully committed to going down that rebuild path with North as well but [it suited both clubs].
“You do look at players who move and get a flag. I didn’t specifically look at them [Frawley or Brian Lake] but players do move and win flags ... every situation is different. If I can come across and help the team have success, that would be an amazing result.”

Tarrant has been training for three weeks already. He might be 32 and forgiven for wanting to ease into another preseason with the older players but as the new player to the club, he arrived on day one and has impressed with his easy transition. He is working with Tom Lynch who has also returned to training early.
Tarrant didn’t play in his first two seasons after being drafted in 2007. He made his debut in 2010 but those early years were interrupted by injury and he struggled for games. Since then he got his body right and has been reliable across 174 games.
He might break his MCG record, win that flag and prove to be not so much the new James Frawley as the new Robbie Tarrant.

I guess the other questions here are:
- will Miller come on?
- when will the club blood Gibcus?
Grimes, Broad, Vlastuin will stay back surely. Maybe Tarrant will allow Balta to try a wing/forward? Then if we play Gibcus or Miller someone else surely needs to move out.

The underrated AFL recruits for 2022
Which new signings have been flying under the radar?
By Mitch Keating
zerohanger.com
February 10, 2022
5. Robbie Tarrant (Richmond)
While Tarrant's highly-rated services are well-documented, it will be the underlying factors of his move to Punt Road that will unravel as one of the great rewards for Richmond.
The Tigers' backline was depleted early into the off-season with the departures of incumbent duo Bachar Houli and David Astbury, leaving Richmond to chase senior figures for their defence.
No options on offer came greater than Tarrant, who is sure to aid the Tigers' hopes of returning to the premiership frame.
Add in the experience top draftee Josh Gibcus will gain from the likes of Tarrant, and the former Roos' arrival is sure to bode well in the short and long term for the Tigers.

“NIGHTMARE TO PLAY ON”: TIGERS RECRUIT HITS THE GROUND RUNNING
By Alex Zaia
SEN
15 February 2022
Richmond recruit Robbie Tarrant hasn’t missed a beat in his first pre-season at his new club.
The 32-year-old joined the Tigers as an unrestricted free agent on a two-year deal in a trade with North Melbourne last October.
After playing 174 games across 12 seasons at the Kangaroos, Tarrant gets a fresh start at Punt Road with the Tigers looking to reassert themselves as a premiership contender.
New Richmond co-captain Toby Nankervis concedes retired pair David Astbury and Bachar Houli have left “massive holes” down back, but is confident Tarrant’s arrival can go some way to filling the void.
“I don’t think he’s missed a session. He’s completed a whole pre-season,” Nankervis told SEN’s The Run Home.
“He’s super fit, super competitive and the backs absolutely love playing with him.
“He’s going to fit in really well. He’s a nightmare to play on at training.”
Tarrant spurned a two-year contract offer from North Melbourne to make the switch to Richmond.
Tigers coach Damien Hardwick told Fox Footy last October that the veteran defender still has plenty of good football left in him.
“With Dave (Astbury) retiring we felt we had a need for a bigger-bodied defender. And I think that will allow Dylan Grimes and Noah Balta to be a little bit freer down there,” Hardwick said.
Tarrant won a Syd Barker Medal as North Melbourne’s best and fairest in 2016 and was a rock down back for the Roos over several seasons.

we have regularly gone with two KPD'S Astbury Rance and later Astbury Balta and the two talls Grimes and Broad Along with Vlastuin.
Nothing has change except the names. KPD Tarrant, Miller? along with two of Broad, Grimes, Gibcus along with Vlastuin.
The reality is we have only got taller up fwd but if you delve into it we have consistently looked to find a three tall fwd line set up players just have not come on enough to implement it or they have left prematurely.

COULD TIGERS RECRUIT HAVE A “BRIAN LAKE-TYPE EFFECT”?
By Alex Zaia
SEN
7 March 2022
David King wonders if Robbie Tarrant could have a “Brian Lake-type effect” on Richmond.
The Hawks traded for Lake, a dual All-Australian, to bolster their defence after losing the 2012 Grand Final.
The former Bulldog played a key role in Hawthorn’s flag three-peat, winning the Norm Smith Medal in the 2013 Grand Final.
Tarrant’s arrival from North Melbourne strengthens Richmond’s backline following the retirements of David Astbury and Bachar Houli and gives coach Damien Hardwick more flexibility with his other talls.
“It’s not how they play, it’s who now they are playing with,” King told SEN’s Whateley.
“Tarrant comes in and could have a Brian Lake-type effect. You just know that job is going to get done. And then you get (Noah) Balta wherever you want him – ruck or forward.
“That’s full club – that’s recruiting. In he comes.”
Top Tigers draftee Josh Gibcus is knocking on the door for a Round 1 debut, while ruckman Ivan Soldo is fit and available after missing all of 2021 with an ACL injury.
“Gibcus – who will take a contender for Mark of the Year at some stage this year. This kid has got unbelievable ups, he just goes straight up, his vertical leap is ridiculous,” King said.
“Some of Soldo’s pack-crashing contest work in the forward half made you think, ‘Do they have to go a bit taller with their selection?’.
“(Toby) Nankervis is playing, Balta is playing … maybe Soldo has to be in the line-up.”

If he does a lake and is a key cog to a 3-peat then I could basically lie down and die.
-
So would Gilligan McLaughlin
-
"Selfishly, I was jumping at the idea of getting Robbie over to us," Grimes said.
"He's freed me up a lot over the pre-season and he's a really stable, big body and just a terrific guy and leader.
"He's made my role a lot easier working with some younger backs as well.
"It's meant a real weight has been lifted off our other leaders on to perform."

-
So would Gilligan McLaughlin
:lol
-
“Robbie’s been fantastic,” Hardwick said.
“He’s a big boy. I didn’t realise how big he was . . .
“I spoke to him about my career when I got traded from Essendon to Port Adelaide.
“It took a couple of games to get to understand when you’re in a (new) system what that looks like.
“He was a little bit disappointed with his Geelong (practice) game, but then I thought we saw on the weekend (against Hawthorn in Devonport) what he’s going to add to us. And he’ll get better again the more games he plays . . .
“He’s got a great understanding of how to nullify leads, how to take away good opponents, when he jumps, he’s quite powerful . . . and he’s a beautiful kick of the ball. So, he’s going to be a welcome addition . . .
“And, although he’s 32, he barely played his first three or four years. So, he hasn’t got a lot of miles in him, which is great.”

Going well so far
-
Had no issue with our deep defence tonight. We didn't lose due to McKay or Curnow getting off the chain.
Tarrant did amazingly well to keep McKay quiet (1 goal) given all the clearances and inside 50s Carlton had especially in the 2nd and 4th quarters.
-
Robbie Tarrant’s smooth Tigerland transition has drawn high praise from one of his new backline teammates, Jayden Short.
“He’s been amazing ever since he’s come to the Club,” Short said on 3AW.
“I love the bloke and I just love having him by my side.
“You just know what he’s going to bring every week. It’s just 100 percent intensity and effort.
“To look behind you and know you have ‘Taz’ there, it’s just amazing.
“I’m very grateful that we were able to get him and that he came across because I’m loving playing with him.”

Some praise towards Robbie who did well on Saturday night IMV. Kept Naughton to just two goals while he had 7 intercept marks himself.
Gibcus and Miller will be learning heaps from Tarrant also.
-
Has been an excellent pickup so far
-
Just which someone would slot in the hole and block the FF lead as Tarrant isnt quick enough to keep up
-
Hes like a new recruit
-
Just which someone would slot in the hole and block the FF lead as Tarrant isnt quick enough to keep up
Yep, the couple times Naughton got the break on the lead Robbie was at least a metre behind.
But clearly still learning our style but has been good
-
Astbury going around for another year couldn't have gone much worse than this bloke...as cooked as any of our old guard but without the medals to show for it...time to pee this overrated Norf hasbeen off and bring in Biggy..... :shh
-
100% Dio. He is really bad and I never understood the criticism of Astbury. This bloke well what are we thinking.
-
Just based off todays performance. Had a shocker today but have thought elsewise he’s been good.
-
The holding he does and his lack of leg speed has been a concern all season, and he had an ordinary game against the Saints too. Other than he was solid and his effort is great. He's just gonna struggle at times.
What else are we gonna do other than play him? There is no one else and I like seeing Balta play as a forward.
-

Agree. And as generic as it may sound he brings experience and leadership down there to help Miller and Gibcus especially with Grimes out.
You would just be throwing them to the wolves playing biggy, Miller and Gibcus as our 3 KPD. Grand total of sub 10 games experience combined btw the 3 of them.
-
Was incredibly poor
Would be embarrassed by his efforts yesterday
Let's see how he responds
-
Was uncompetitive and quite lazy on most occasions. I would rather we played Biggy.
-
Was he on Walker?
-
Hasn't worked.
I've seen enough to say this was a mistake. Play the kids for mine.
-
He was a big fish in a very small pond. Now hes a small fish in a huge pond and it shows. Its one thing to play fir a minniw club and another to be able yo deal with the expectation of 0laying for a huge club.
-
He's certainly lost a yard since his last injury
-
Was he on Walker?
Yep most of the time
-
He needs a walker..... :shh
-
Haven't been a great watcher of other games for a while now, but was quite perplexed when we took him. I was never that impressed. Maybe its a north thing
-
Been a great player and I would suggest he’s only here as a mentor and to fill a gap whilst we develop others
-
Tarrant has conceded 12 goals to his direct opponent from his last 3 games according to Fox Footy last night.
-
That’s rubbish if true OER.
Dump his sorry arse back to VFL. I find it laughable we would get a stop gap player to replace Astbury, but ignore any player like a lepinski for a midfield that is the real issue.
Our list management have completely stuffed up this off season.
Max King
Tex (32 next week)
Noughton. It would have been 15 goals if he kicked straight that day. So on those numbers what would have biggie let through?

Off-season signing Robbie Tarrant made a strong impact in his first game back in the senior side since round six, after spending the past fortnight in the VFL.
Hardwick conceded it has taken the 33-year-old time to learn Richmond's system, but praised the former North Melbourne defender's ability to play through hip pain.
"He is a really important player to us now, and moving forward. He is another tough guy; he had a bit of a hip complaint and he just wanted to keep playing. We started seeing what he could do tonight," Hardwick said.
"We've got to understand that players coming into systems – especially key forwards and key backs – are a little bit different to how we defend compared to his previous club.
"It was always going to take a little bit of time, but I thought he was really good tonight. Peter Wright is a match winner and he kept him to maybe one goal (Wright was held goalless)? I thought he was terrific."

This guy was very solid all night. Admittedly crap oppo but he gave them all a bath and looked very composed.
Shame he was robbed of a nice goal.
-
Best game for the club by far.
-
He was a real positive last night .
If anything he's an insurance policy.

Solid game

Good game. Will be needed until both balta and lynch are back.

The Undroppables: Who is a lock to play in Round 11?
Andrew Slevison
SEN
23 May 2022
Robbie Tarrant (Richmond)
Veteran defender Robbie Tarrant played his best game in a Richmond jumper in the Dreamtime win over Essendon.
He spent the majority of the night on Peter Wright and beat him comprehensively, holding the dangerous Bombers forward goalless for just the second time this season.
Tarrant had 15 disposals, took eight marks and had eight intercept possessions which further enhanced his tight defensive performance. He also banged home what would have been his first Tigers goal only for Tom Lynch to give away a free kick behind the line.
The former North Melbourne best and fairest was dropped after the Round 6 loss to Melbourne before missing a week with hip soreness and then spending two weeks in the VFL.
It had many questioning the club’s recruitment of the 33-year-old, but his early-season form can be excused given he started in an unfamiliar defensive system without experienced pair Dylan Grimes and Nick Vlastuin by his side for the most part.
With Noah Balta injured and a Friday night test against the Swans and Lance Franklin in Sydney next up, Tarrant has cemented his spot in the side for now.
Another Tiger in the mix is Jack Ross who has been in and out of the Richmond team across the last few seasons. He replaced Jack Graham (toe) and put in an assured showing with 19 touches and six tackles.
It was a performance worthy of another week in the ones, provided Damien Hardwick is prepared to play both he and Graham in the same side if the latter is fit.

Bloody hopeless.
At least with ross I never expected much, but this guy well
I’m struggling to understand wtf did we recruit him for?
Did absolute sfa AGAIN.
-
Get games into Miller was recruited to be the big gorilla backman far from it.
-
To think some wanted Astbury gone. In fact were glad he retired if I recall.
Where are those people now and how do they view Tarrant. Dimma has no confidence in him so he stands gibcus on buddy and watches him destroy the kid.
He is just completely useless. Miller must play.
-
There were a couple of brainfades down back but in fairness the main problem was the way the ball was coming into the Swans forward line after half-time which made it tough for our defenders. Blame our mids and half-forwards' drop off in workrate and lack of pressure for gifting the Swans easy centre clearances and rebounds off half-back.
-
Absolutely mare of a list decision. Especially when we are so light on forwards.

That's true , but Tarrant on 2 occasions cost us bigtime for a player of his experience one he didn't spoil and they kicked a goal and then on the goal line they kicked another after he failed to clear it no excuses.

True. The missed spoil in the 3rd quarter especially was a total brainfade. The goal line idiocy was more a team 'effort'. More than just Tarrant failed to punch it through :banghead.
My point though was that in the second half we were gifting too many easy clean centre clearances (especially to Warner & Rowbottom) as well as D50 rebounds under no pressure (Mills wasn't manned up). Some of those Swan F50 entries were undefendable they were so easy. So I would argue it was far more the lack of pressure, workrate and brainfades upfield that won the Swans the game and gifted them easy goals than errors from our back six (Floss had one of his poorer games in a long while).
-
That last quarter was the best by far Robbie has played as a Tiger. Took a number of crucial intercepts to settle us behind the ball defensively. Throughout the night he also kept Dixon quiet. We brought Tarrant in for the opposition's big gorillas so Robbie did his job.

Last quarter was great , but gez his a liability at stages and momentum killer silly mistakes for a 200 game player.
-
Agreed but I finally saw why we recruited for him last night.
-
Just need him while Gibcus matures for a couple of years and for depth etc.
And to sacrifice/wrestle big forwards.
-
I reckon the extra size of the G is not helping him.

PLAYING A BLOKE INTO FORM
HB Meyers
themongrelpunt.com
10 June 2022
If Port weren’t in dire straits, do you think Charlie Dixon would be playing yet?
Serious question – would he be in the current Port side, or would he still be in the SANFL to get his legs under him? I ask because in this game, the thing he seemed best equipped to do was to put up one hand, contest, and allow Robbie Tarrant to turn the clock back and be one of the better defenders on the park.
This is not meant to be a knock on Tarrant – please don’t take it that way, but if Dixon is not completely ready, what the hell is he doing out there?
Tarrant has been very good since his return to the team in Round 10. He was part of a Tiger defence that brutalised Peter Wright and was solid against the Swans, as well. This was his best game as a Tiger, though. Dixon is meant t be the focal point of the Port offence. All attacks go through him, but Tarrant was with him every step of the way to ensure that Charlie didn’t make an impact.
The only time I remember Tarrant being cleanly beaten was on a perfect kick from Ryan Burton that gave Dixon the advantage… unlike just about every other kick the Power went inside 50 with.
In a defence boasting Dylan Grimes, Nathan Broad, and Noah Balta at times, the form of Robbie Tarrant may end up being pivotal to the Tigers’ season. If he s performing, it eases the load on the others and allows them to play a more attacking brand of footy.
I was genuinely concerned after a month or so into the season that Tarrant was cooked. He looked lost, and he looked slow. The last few weeks have been encouraging, however, and if he is able to maintain this trajectory, he will have a big say in September proceedings.

Dimma post-game said Tarrant "busted" a knuckle in the first 3 minutes of the game. Hand is the size of a watermelon so not too sure where that leaves him but he's a tough hombre.
-
Any official news about Tarrant's injury?
Social media saying his hand (knuckle) requires surgery and he'll be missing for weeks.
Shout out to Robbie Tarrant who broke his knuckle 2 mins into the match, you can see it on the replay. Now surgery.
Unbelievable grit to not only play the game out but do such a great job.
That kind of courage says plenty about him & will earn the respect of everyone at the club.

I would have thought 2-4 [weeks] depending on which part of the metatarsal they pin
Worst case would be 6

-
Metacarpal if it’s his hand
-
Miller doing well again in the twos. Id bring him in as an xtra tall in defence.
-
No Tarrant or Balta against Geelong.
Their big forwards must be thinking it’s their birthday
-
Can he play with a protective glove ?.
-
I personally think Miller is a better option than Tarrant anyway.
Granted Tarrant has experience on his side but he is very slow off the mark and at times infringes because he’s lost a yard or two because of age
IMO Miller has the attributes to be a very solid defender. What is most pleasing thing is he doesn’t panic and will spoil first. The added bonus is that he has sublime kicking skills from what I’ve seen.
I’d be playing him way ahead of Biggie at this stage
Miller is wasted in the VFL.

Tend to agree how is body on body through with push and shove.
-
Yep gonna be hard for any of them to play on Porkins without Balta or Tarrant around.
I think Miller would be a good height and size for Cameron though.
-
Cameron moves very well, his agility would trouble Miller.
-
Nank is going to have to play a kick behind the play. Will need someone else to do some ruck work next week to help out.
-
I'd say Grimes will start on Cameron.
-
Gibcus to get first go at Cameron.
-
miller to get Hawkins, Grimes to get Cameron with Gibcus to help out as third tall.
-
Robbie Tarrant, hand
"Robbie battled on through the whole game. It happened in the first couple of minutes, he cracked a knuckle in his hand and he's had to have some minor surgery to put a plate in that to reinforce it. He's a chance to play this week because we do have a longer week given the nine-day break. We'll make an assessment later in the week as to his availability, but it's looking more positive by the day and Robbie's pretty tough."

Robbie Tarrant ‘likely’ starter week after hand surgery: Hardwick
Key defender Robbie Tarrant is a chance to front against the Cats despite a hand injury suffered in last Thursday's win over the Blues.
"He's a tough bugger," Hardwick said of Tarrant.
"He did that injury in the first three to four minutes and got an injection, had a plate inserted on the Friday or Saturday.
"He is looking likely at the moment."
Hardwick said a selection call on Tarrant would be left to the last possible moment.
"It's not the best thing to look at, to be fair, his hand at the moment," he said.
"But obviously with the plates in there it does make it stronger.
"He has just got to feel comfortable enough to play and if he is, we will pick him.
"He's a guy with great experience, has been around these sorts of things before, so he will have a better understanding than most about what is required to get the job done."

He is only playing on Porkins. That's a week off in itself

He'll play.
He's also disposable/not our future. Better he plays and hurt than we risk getting Gibcus' head smashed off
-
Tarrant named to play.
-
Tarrant named to play.
Miller an emergency.
-
He is only playing on Porkins. That's a week off in itself
Oh the same Porkins who only kicked 4 and 4 the last two occasions. :o
-
Really liked his game tonight. I thought he stood tall and took some big marks. Became a Tiger tonight.
-
Tonight was Tarrant's best game for us. Playing on the opposition beasts is what we recruited him for.
ps. The games I saw Tarrant playing for North he would do a decent job on Hawkins. Seems to match up well on him.
-
Perfect match up for Tarrant.
I will also say the stand rule has hurt Tarrant. He's not quick and it's much easier to kick to lead up forwards now, which he isn't great at defending. One on one he was brilliant and positioned himself perfectly v Hawkins
-
Yup was excellent tonight.
-
Yup was excellent tonight.
sheesh we agree wonders will never cease.
Showed his true value and imo has not been as bad as many think anyway.
Would still like us to have a big decently quick player to partner him. I suppose its why i hope Miller can get games.
People need to remember with Miller what actually got him drafted. Strong in the air good agility and very quick.
Still think we need a Tarrant type to lock away a player like Hawkins and players like Grimes and Miller on a player like Cameron. Miller gets him deep and Dylan hounds him up the ground.
-
I agree he was courageous and busted his nut. I feel like he really works hard and in a few games he got pinged by the umps for bs that everyone else gets away with 9 times out of 10. He took some good contested marks too which shows he is getting back to what I remember admiring about him when he was with the other lot
-
Tiger Tough Tarrant
It’s hard enough any time to take on powerful Geelong spearhead Tom Hawkins, let alone when you’ve undergone surgery to have a plate inserted in your hand after breaking a knuckle.
In a performance that endeared himself to new Tiger teammates, coaches and supporters alike, the former Kangaroo kept Hawkins to just eight disposals all-up and no goals.

After an iffy start as a Tiger, Tarrant's last couple of weeks have been very good. Credit where it's due.
-
Yup holds his spot when balta comes back.
My back 6 would be:
Grimes Tarrant Vlastuin
Broad Balta Rioli
-
Thought he was brilliant today.
Well done Robbie :clapping

Agreed. Brilliant game

Yep very nice work today. He has taken over Astbury role perfectly
Not saying he is an A grade player or that Ben M wouldnt be better, but seriously who is running the show down at North? WTF were they thinking getting rid of this guys leadership.
Is it true that Paul roos come in as a consultant with Noble then peeed off back to Hawaii?
Stupid mistakes like this should not ultimately reward them a PP. They are a disaster.
-
He was playing hurt earlier in the year
When fit, he’s a definite A-grader
Let’s see how he’s tracking in a few weeks time as he builds to 100%

Yes Roos is currently living in Hawaii and supposedly still on the N0rt payroll :o

i get that WP, but clearly the offer was rubbish hence why he left.
I would hate that club get rewarded for idiotic decisions like this one and also the Roos one.

N0rt offered 1 year, we offered 2

I thought Roos offered two years also but it was more that he wanted to win some games and have a crack at finals/flag.
Made a good choice, flag or not.

Roos original offer was 1 year
When we offered 2 years, they then matched that. Too little to late
-
He plays like he has ownership in the club and is showing leadership, exactly what North need, probably more than a young selfish forward / ruck
-
Building nicely now I think learning our systems and getting confidence.
-
Robbie Tarrant shared the tough role on 250-game milestone man Jack Darling with young Josh Gibcus, and excelled.
“A number of times I thought Robbie Tarrant showed why they have recruited him,” commentator Gerard Healy praised.
“Defensively spoils, just running to cover; he’s going to end up becoming a really valuable pick up.”
Anthony Hudson said Richmond’s decision to recruit Tarrant from North Melbourne was paying off.
“What a story it would be if Robbie Tarrant could get there in September as well for the Tigers,” he said.

Always thought Gibcus was too small for him but Dimma wanted him to have a go before making the swap which he seems to do most weeks.
-
I think he'll only get better this year and will be quite valuable come finals
-
A shame as soon as Tarrant finds form those around him decide to lose their bottle. Trying to look for a positive out of this debacle. For mine, Robbie was our only consistent four quarter performer today.
-
Thought he was great
-
Tarrant had 14 disposals, a game-high 10 intercepts, game-high 13 one-percenters and took five marks.
Most importantly, he kept his opponent, strong Suns key forward Levi Casboult, goalless.
https://www.richmondfc.com.au/news/1170244/rock-solid-robbie-tarrant
-
It was mentioned on SEN late yesterday arvo that Tarrant hasn't conceded a goal to his direct opponent over the past 4 weeks.
Hawkins 0
Darling 0 ...... (Darling got his one goal while on Gibcus).
Casboult 0
Larkey 0 ..... (granted Larkey was injured and eventually subbed out)
-
One of the few he played okay against North
-
I always thought it would take 10 or more games for Tarrant to get the system. But the backline needs another 200 games into Gibcus.
-
It's a shame that he's looking the goods but the rest of the team is faltering. Should have been a Brian Lake pickup to keep us going for another couple of seasons.
Tarrant Grimes Balta
Vlastuin Broad Rioli
McIntosh Short Pickett
Bolton Lynch Baker
MRJ Riewoldt Martin
Nank Prestia Cotchin
Int: Gibcus Graham Sonsie Cumberland
I really feel a team like that could have gone deep this year and Tarrant was the perfect addition.
Not to be though.
-
Valuable veteran key defender Robbie Tarrant must surely be charging home in the 2022 Jack Dyer Medal count.
You could mount a strong argument that Tarrant has been Richmond’s most consistent player over the course of the past couple of months.
He has negated every opponent he’s played on and conceded precious few goals throughout that time.
In last night’s draw with Fremantle at Marvel Stadium, Tarrant kept a quality opponent in Matthew Taberner to just eight disposals and one goal.
Tarrant, himself, had 14 disposals, three rebound-50s, five intercepts, six one-percenters and took eight marks.

Loving his work

Loving his work
Yep. Who would have thought that this fumbling cumbersome player from the first half would have sprouted wings like this in the past few weeks.
It’s like that Cats game where he busted a knuckle and had that massive contest in their goal square turned his season around because he hasn’t looked back.
Genuinely happy for him, seems like a nice bloke off the field.
-
Tarrant been our best player the last month.

I spoke to him at the player sponsor dinner a few weeks back.
What a top bloke he is. I actually said to him that he seems to be playing his best footy since he hurt his hand. ;D. He laughed, said good point. Then showed when his hand and wow it is staggering how swollen it still was
Tarrant been our best player the last month.
Certainly had been and quiet easily at that
-
Look at the way Robbie Tarrant lurks like a Tiger behind key forwards. He's almost invisible. He's like a weight on their conscience. A niggling feeling that you're not going to kick another goal for the game.

Had a very ordinary first half but was good in the second half and not alone in that respect.
Had some insufferable idiot behind me dropping a F bomb about every 30 seconds and call Tarrant and fool, wacko etc.
If we hadn't come back strong in the second half I probably would have lost my noodle at him but everyone ended up happy thankfully.
-
With Grimesy done, having Tarrant is a godsend now.
-
With Grimesy done, having Tarrant is a godsend now.
Yeah we have a pretty decent mix of tall backs
Tig can play a Grimes role and so can Broad to a degree depends on match ups
Balta and Tarrant too really stong bodies and Miller and Gibbo at our disposal too along with the smalls that go through :cheers
-
Reckon we can cover Grimes down back but his leadership will leave a gaping hole.
-
With Grimesy done, having Tarrant is a godsend now.
Yeah I agree with this
-
Credit we're due he has been one of our best second half of the year wasn't impressed early.
-
Robbie would be feeling pretty good about his move to the Tigers this season. He has been able to adjust and slot nicely into our backline playing 19 of the possible 23 H/A matches and now will be playing in his first final for six years.
-
Looked cooked early on but has been proven to be an awesome addition. Some more shrewd business by us at the trade table here.

‘We had a moment’: Riewoldt reveals how star recruit’s record is driving finals charge
David Zita
Fox Sports
August 31st, 2022
Richmond spearhead Jack Riewoldt has revealed how he and his teammates are embracing the finals through a new lens - recruit Robbie Tarrant.
The Tigers face Brisbane on Thursday night at the Gabba in a do-or-die elimination final, having locked in a top eight spot with only a fortnight left in the regular season.
While the Tigers are in a far less commanding position than they were during their premiership-winning campaigns in 2017, 2019 and 2020, Riewoldt told AFL 360 the side had been given a fresh perspective this season via Tarrant, who came across from North Melbourne at the close of last season.
Tarrant played 174 games for North Melbourne before his move to the Tigers, with his later years at the Roos mired in seasons spent near the bottom of the ladder.
“In the end, footy is fun You play footy to play in finals. Sometimes it gets lost on you - and we’ve been really privileged to play in a lot of big games and a lot of finals - you look to Robbie Tarrant who hasn’t played finals for eight years,” Riewoldt said.
“We had a moment probably around round 18 or 19 where we were sort of on the cusp of the eight and in and out with weekly results and we spoke about it.
“He (Tarrant) was sitting there and he said ‘you guys have got to remember this is great ... I just want to play finals. I haven’t played finals for eight years.’ You sit back and go ‘Oh, yeah’.
“When we did secure it in round 22, that was a really special moment I think for that backline crew as well, who said we sort of got there for Robbie a little bit.”
Tarrant has played in just four finals across his AFL career.
Riewoldt, by comparison, has played in 15.

Been very good this season. Hopefully he plays 4 finals this season and ends up a premiership player too.

Could he do a Brian Lake?
Would be huge

A 3-peat in the twilight? Sounds good to me haha.

Massive Brian lake vibes right now. Hoping we can climb this mountain.

6. Robbie Tarrant
Took Joe Daniher at the first bounce but rotated through a few players after Oscar McInerney’s substitution forced a shuffle. Looked strong in one-on-one in defensive contests.

Damien Hardwick provides Robbie Tarrant injury update ahead of Round 2

March 23, 2023
Richmond premiership coach Damien Hardwick has provided an update on injured key defender Robbie Tarrant, announcing the veteran is still not ready to return to action.
Tarrant has been plagued by a hip injury since the late stages of the pre-season in February, consequently missing the Tigers' pre-season clash with Melbourne and their season-opening draw with Carlton last Thursday.
Speaking to the media ahead of his side's Round 2 bout with Adelaide, Hardwick clarified that the ex-Kangaroo isn't quite ready to take the field.
"Yeah, he's not right to go at the moment," Hardwick began.
"So, it's a little bit of a frustrating one for Robbie and us, we know he's a big, big boy that can play on those bigger type players like Tex (Walker) is down there (for the Crows), and Darcy Fogarty, obviously, but we've just got to make sure when he comes back into the side [that] he's right [to go].
"So he's probably, maybe one to two weeks away [from returning] at this stage, but we know that when he does become available that he's important to us."

Key defender Robbie Tarrant will make his return through the VFL after suffering a hip complaint in the pre-season.
"Robbie had a really good session on Saturday morning and seems to have turned the corner," Physical Performance Manager Luke Meehan said of Tarrant earlier this week.

Yeah, his start here was poor. He leaked goals early on, but he pulled it together & was a class act later in the year ... then the injury hit ...
Thanks Taz ... :cheers

'Nothing left in the tank': Tigers defender retires after 194 games
By Martin Smith
afl.com.au
13 July 2023
RICHMOND and former North Melbourne Robbie Tarrant has announced his retirement, effectively immediately.
The 34-year-old has played just two VFL games this year due to a chronic hip injury and has called time on his career after 194 games at the top level.
The No.15 pick in the 2007 draft, Tarrant played 174 games for the Kangaroos before moving to the Tigers at the end of the 2021 season.
He won North's best and fairest in 2016.
Tarrant said the hip issue that has plagued him this year ultimately became too much to overcome.
"I know if I do not announce it today, that I will keep trying to play, and I am worried about where that will land me come season's end," he said.
"Having missed the draft as a 17-year-old, I knew from then on that if I was going to make it, I was going to have to work as hard as I could.
"And I finish up today knowing that I have done that. I have got nothing left in the tank."
Richmond footy boss Blair Hartley praised Tarrant's professionalism and commitment.
"We brought Robbie to our football club because we admired how he went about things on and off the field and knew that he would make us a better team," he said.
"Across his two years with us, he displayed all his great traits, setting an example and providing leadership for younger players.
"While this year did not work out for Robbie due to his injury troubles, he certainly put his best foot forward and gave himself every chance due to diligence and work ethic.
"Robbie can be proud of his time with Richmond and in the AFL. Across 16 years, he has been a brilliant player, and we wish him and his family all the best.
"They are always welcome at Richmond."

From Robbie Tarrant's farewell speech: :clapping
"I've been able to reflect over the last few weeks about the move to Richmond and what I was expecting. I came to learn a new system, play a role, and see if we could have another crack at finals. All of those things have been amazing.
But what I wasn't expecting, was how much this club would impact me personally and how much it would mean to me. It's a special place with really great people. I am lucky to have been able to experience it, but also make some amazing friendships that will continue on long after I have left this place.
It's a bit of a weird feeling knowing I'll never be able to play footy again. You sort of grieve in a way that you'll be leaving that part of your life behind, but then you get this enormous sense of appreciation. You appreciate the little moments: the laughs, the conversations, and even the tough times. Basically, you appreciate the journey. Footy has given me everything and I will be forever grateful. Thanks boys!"

I’m sure all parties wish we we could have gotten more out of him, nevertheless he was pretty solid when he did play.

So do we now have a spot on our list??

So do we now have a spot on our list??
The rules were changed. We can play any of our rookies whenever we want to. You no longer have to wait for a senior listed player to have to go onto the LTIL. The only time it matters now is prior to the mid-season draft. If we had ruled out Lynch prior to the MSD, then we could've had a third pick and drafted another rookie along with Coulthard and Trezise. Castagna's retirement and Smith's season-ending injury allowed us to draft the latter two in the MSD.
