Post by: one-eyed on May 05, 2022, 10:01:07 AM
We now have a spot open for the midseason draft thanks to Caddy selflessly retiring.

Anyone currently standing out in the state leagues? A ballwinning mid?

MID-SEASON DRAFT CHANCES

With the 2022 mid-season rookie draft just weeks away, clubs have been monitoring players in the Young Guns squads that have been scheduled to face Vic Metro and Vic Country Under 18s teams this month.

And four players loom as strong contenders to be picked up by an AFL club in a few weeks.

Western Jets’ Massimo D’Ambrosio has had a terrific NAB League Boys season so far, racking up 28, 22, 31 and 30 disposals from his four games. He then impressed against Vic Metro for the Young Guns last weekend across half-back, finishing with 24 disposals and 159 ranking points as he provided terrific run from defence. He turns 19 four days after the mid-season draft is scheduled to be held …

Aggressive, big-bodied midfielder Jai Culley was a big standout, booting four first-half goals from 22 disposals, while also having four other score assists. Culley, described by Stingrays coach Nick Cox as “certainly the best 19-year-old in the NAB League” per the Star Journal, was clean with his ball use as he pulled off some brilliant, pinpoint field kicks.

Sandringham ruck Max Ramsden was also impressive in the Young Guns clash, pushing forward to boot two goals from 16 disposals, while Dragons teammate Hugo Hall-Kahan would also be in the mid-season draft mix.

THE YOUNG GUNS “STANDOUTS” WHO ARE MID-SEASON DRAFT “CERTAINTIES”

By Andrew Slevison
SEN
11 May 2022

Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Jai Culley is one of two Mid-Season Draft “certainties”, according to Cal Twomey.

The AFL Media draft guru believes the 19-year-old has put his name firmly in front of AFL recruiters after dominating in the Young Guns v Vic Metro match last weekend.

Culley was overlooked in the National Draft last year, but his form in 2022 should see him find his way to an AFL club next month.

“There were some standouts across that game,” Twomey said on the Future Stars segment on SEN’s The Sporting Capital.

“Jai Culley was the main one there who really put his name forward as a potential early pick.

“22 touches, four goals in a performance that established him as a real talent in this year’s group for the mid-season draft.

“193 centimetres as a midfielder, kicks goals, he ticks a few boxes and he’s got a fair few clubs looking at him.

“He’s certainly one that will be in that mix.”

Having been ignored by AFL recruiters in 2021, the time is now for Culley who has made his presence felt with some quality performances for the Stingrays and of course for the Young Guns in the showcase game.

“He just wasn’t too high on the radar. He nominated for the draft but I don’t think he really ever captured the attention of clubs and recruiters who wanted to probably see a little bit more of him at the NAB League level,” Twomey added.

“As we know, they just didn’t play too much NAB League. This is where the system can spit out a few good players the year after.

“There was maybe a little bit of a knock on his running and getting around the ground. There’s always that question when you’re 193 centimetres. Are you a tall forward who is not quite tall enough? Are you a midfielder who is a little bit taller than usual? Clubs are still getting their heads around that.

“They’ve overlooked him last year, given him another chance this year at the Dandenong Stingrays program in the NAB League and he’s been far too good at that level across this year.

“Then he goes and plays another game for the Young Guns and dominates. I know a lot of recruiters left Werribee last Saturday talking about Jai Culley and locking him in as a mid-season pick up.”

Another player overlooked in last year’s draft who is expected to be selected in June is Max Ramsden.

The Sandringham Dragons ruckman was also promising for the Young Guns with his aerobic ability, which has impressed AFL clubs, the hallmark of his game.

“Max Ramsden as well has had a great start to the season as a 202-centimetre ruckman,” he said.

“16 disposals and 13 hit-outs, he’s the player who last year nominated for the national draft. He didn’t get taken, but that makes him eligible for the mid-season draft.

“He’s the Jacob Edwards story of 2022. Clubs have all been across him really early this year.

“His greatest quality is he’s able to get around the ground. He’s a big guy who can move and find the footy around the ground as well.

“Those are the two names who played in the Young Guns on the weekend who I think are the mid-season certainties heading into the draft.”

The Mid-Season Draft takes place on June 1.

Jai Culley sounds good.

Getting lots of attention this kid.

Probably gone by our pick though.

And knowing our club we will probably pick up something we don't need like a developing ruckman 2 years off debut or a HBF.

I wouldnt pick anyone from our reserves side. Need to look at the SANFL and WAFL and pick best midfieldet available from those two comps. Age doesnt matter. Just bring in someone who had a mature body and can get the footy.

A good pickup, but in 2019 I don't think we needed mids like we have in the last two years. Completely ignored mids and key forwards last draft bar Sonsie.

Parker didn't fill a need last year either. Why not try a guy like Freeman or Schlensog when we needed mids and key pos?

Just stocked up on HBFs.

Turner 185/88, age 25.

Averaging about 25 touches and 1.5 goals for Glenelg.

Question is how would that translate to AFL?

AFL.com.au’s draft guru Cal Twomey has named four prospects who are attracting interest ahead of the AFL’s Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

Casey Voss
Club: Sturt, SANFL
Age: 21yrs
Height: 182cms
Weight: 80kgs

“Yeah, he’s in the mix,” Twomey said when asked about Voss.

“There’s obviously less than two weeks to go until the mid-season rookie draft, he played well in that state game on the weekend so has obviously flickered a little bit of interest there.”

Josh Carmichael
Club: West Adelaide, SANFL
Age: 22yrs
Height: 189cms
Weight: 88kgs

“The AFL gave some exemptions over the past week and that’s really shaken the tree I think on who clubs are looking at.

“There’s a lot of interest in a guy called Josh Carmichael, 188cm midfielder who kicks goals, he comes from the country to play for West Adelaide this year in the SANFL.

“So he’s got a number of clubs looking at him with their picks.”

Brett Turner
Club: Glenelg, SANFL
Age: 25yrs
Height: 185cms
Weight: 88kgs

“Brett Turner, a 25-year-old forward, he had 38 (disposals) and kicked four (goals) against Adelaide’s SANFL side earlier this year, so the Crows have been linked a little bit to him now, they might take him in the mid-season pool.”

James Blanck
Club: Box Hill Hawks, VFL
Age: 21 yrs
Height: 195cms
Weight: 80kgs

“James Blanck, he’s a key defender, Hawthorn has been struggling a bit in key defence, they’ve had a few goals kicked on them in recent weeks.

“So the Hawks were keen to get him to train with the club for a pre-season rookie spot, they weren't allowed at that point but he’s been given an exemption to be eligible for the mid-season draft.

“They’ve had some success at the mid-season draft out of Box Hill players, they obviously took Jai Newcombe last year, James Blanck looming as another one too.”

AFL Draft: Potential No.1 pick yet to make father-son call, mid-season contender playing with Richmond VFL

A rising mid-season prospect will be under the watchful eye of an AFL club when he plays for their reserves side — and a former player has helped mentor him.

Dan Batten and Chris Cavanagh
HeraldSun
May 22, 2022

Mid-season draft contender Massimo D’Ambrosio is back under Richmond’s watchful eye as the intake approaches.

D’Ambrosio strengthened his chances of landing on an AFL list on June 1 with a standout performance for the Young Guns against Vic Country last weekend, tallying 32 disposals, 22 kicks at 77 per cent efficiency, nine marks and seven rebound 50s.

A part of Richmond’s VFL program during the pre-season after being overlooked in last year’s drafts, the 178cm distributing defender made his VFL debut in its season-opener – showing positive signs in a 15-disposal and 10 intercept possession display – and is set to don the yellow and black for the remaining two matches before the mid-season draft.

He has been named on a wing for the Dreamtime at the ‘G curtain raiser against the Bombers.

Former Richmond defender and Tigers VFL coach Steve Morris has helped mentor the silky youngster during his time at Punt Road.

Sydney, Hawthorn and Geelong, who all have selections in the mid-season draft, are among the clubs who have inquired about D’Ambrosio.

The 19-year-old, renowned for his elite kicking and decision-making, returned to the NAB League and dominated for the Western Jets after his promising VFL debut, averaging a formidable 27.8 disposals, eight intercept possessions and eight rebound 50s.

Recruiters are eager to see more of him at state league level after proving his worth in the NAB League, with the Jets also having the bye this weekend.

The Tigers have managed to fill the gaping hole left by the retirement of Bachar Houli, swinging Dan Rioli into defence in an inspired move, along with securing dashing defender Jayden Short on a five-year-deal.

The club also picked up running playmakers Tom Brown and Sam Banks in last year’s draft.

WILL POTENTIAL NO.1 CHOOSE OPEN MARKET?

Brisbane has been given no indication on whether father-son prospect Will Ashcroft will nominate for Lions in this year’s draft as the potential No. 1 pick continues to weigh up his options.

Ashcroft said on Wednesday that he was still yet to make a decision on where his future would lie.

Brisbane remains hopeful but far from confident that the Sandringham Dragons midfielder will choose to nominate for the club where his father Marcus won three premierships.

The 18-year-old grew up in Queensland but moved to Melbourne with his family at the start of 2018 and has begun a business and sports management course at Deakin University this year.

Likened to Carlton’s Sam Walsh, Ashcroft has starred as a 23rd man for the Lions’ VFL team in recent weeks and will get another chance to test himself at a higher level when he lines up for the NAB AFL Academy squad in their exhibition match against Collingwood’s VFL team on Saturday.

Academy coach Tarkyn Lockyer labelled Ashcroft a “true professional” who had no shortage of talent.

“His preparation, his diligence and his want to be as good as he can be and get the most out of his God given talent if first-rate,” Lockyer said.

“He’s really driven so he’ll see this game as a real opportunity to benchmark himself against not just the opposition that we’re going to play, but also to see where he where he fits with his peers as well.”

Recruiters still view Ashcroft as a top-three pick in this year’s draft, alongside Oakleigh Chargers pair Elijah Tsatas and George Wardlaw who will also feature as part of the AFL Academy team in the clash at Frankston this weekend.

“Elijah is winning it in the midfield, he’s got great speed. So he’s got some really high end AFL attributes,” Lockyer said.

“George is a real contested beast, inside midfielder. He’s a really strong and powerful athlete.”

Another Brisbane father-son prospect, Jaspa Fletcher, will also feature for the AFL Academy, along with exciting Essendon father-son prospect Alwyn Davey Jnr.

Fletcher is the son of former Brisbane Bears and Brisbane Lions player Adrian Fletcher, with Davey being the son of former Bombers small forward Alwyn Davey.

IS CADMAN THE NEXT CAMERON?

A KEY forward who has been likened to Geelong star Jeremy Cameron has been making waves in recruiting circles and is shaping as a potential draft bolter later this year.

Aaron Cadman was added to the NAB AFL Academy squad earlier this month and is set to play in Saturday’s exhibition match against Collingwood’s VFL side.

A hardworking lead-up forward, Cadman measured 193.7cm in March but is still growing and developing his game.

The 18-year-old has averaged 14.5 disposals, 5.5 marks, 8.5 score involvements and 2 goals from four NAB League games for the Greater Western Victoria Rebels this season.

“He’s got great running capabilities, he’s got good speed, he marks the ball at its highest point and he’s a raking left-foot kick,” Rebels coach David Loader said.

“He has got some similarities to a young Jeremy Cameron, who we had the pleasure of working with.

“I think he’s going to keep climbing up through the charts as the year goes on. I’m sitting back waiting for the day that he grabs hold of a game and kicks half a dozen goals and people say, ‘Wow, we’ve got something special here’.”

AFL club recruiters said they could also see the Cameron comparisons and added that Cadman was a “good country kid” who “has the frame and the physique that you can see really filling out well”.

SCULLY FAST CLIMBING UP DRAFT BOARDS

In 2009, Tom Scully was the No. 1 draft pick to Melbourne.

In 2022, another Tom Scully is quickly rising up draft boards and shapes as a high selection.

This year’s Scully is a 204cm key forward or ruckman from West Adelaide who has made a flying start to the SANFL under-18s season, which saw him added to the AFL Academy squad earlier this month.

Scully had averaged 12.6 disposals, 7.1 marks, 9 score involvements and 5.3 goals across seven SANFL under-18 games.

“He’s been kicking multiple goals week in, week out,” AFL Academy coach Tarkyn Lockyer said.

“He’s a really good contested mark, hit up forward and he’s been hitting the scoreboard really hard.

“He is certainly someone who will relish the opportunity to test his game against a quality outfit in Collingwood VFL.”

As impressed as recruiters have been with Scully, they are also keen to see him test himself against bigger and better opponents, with the towering tall having often been manned by significantly undersized players so far this year.

EIGHT MID-SEASON BOLTERS ENTER THE MIX

Eight state-league players were granted late exemptions for the mid-season draft, and their stories vary significantly.

Players must receive an exemption to be drafted if they did not nominate for the previous draft period, with the allowance generally indicating that a club or multiple clubs are interested in selecting them.

From a 28-year-old key forward to a West Coast debutant to the great grandson of an Indigenous football legend, here’s the eight bolters who could join your club.

Jake Florenca (South Fremantle/WA)
Midfielder, 25, 184cm, 86kg
Arguably the most high-profile of this list after an eye-catching AFL debut for West Coast as a Covid top-up player in round 8, where he impressed with his work in the clinches. The 184cm midfielder tallied 19 disposals, 13 contested possessions, seven tackles, four clearances and 102 KFC SuperCoach points against Brisbane, who have no shortage of quality midfielders. Florenca has been in blistering form in the WAFL, where he is averaging a whopping 20 contested possessions, 32 disposals nine clearances, nine tackles across the first three rounds, and was one of the WAFL’s best with 18 possessions and a goal against the SANFL last weekend’s representative game. Could he play for two clubs inside the very same season?

James Blanck (Box Hill/VFL)
Key defender, 21, 195cm
A rock-solid defender with good hands overhead, Blanck trained with the Hawthorn over the summer with several others Box Hill Hawks players but was unable to be listed with the club, but now is able to after receiving an exemption to be nominated for the mid-season intake. The Hawks have been beat up in this year by key forwards, conceding 13 goals in the past fortnight alone to Richmond and Essendon. Will Blanck follow Jai Newcombe’s lead and become the next Box Hill export to join the Hawks through the mid-season draft?

Kallan Dawson (Williamstown/VFL)
Medium defender, 23, 194cm
Dawson has improved considerably this year after five VFL matches in two seasons in 2018 and 2019 for Williamstown. He shone in his most recent VFL match against Frankston, hauling in 11 marks (four of those intercept marks), seven intercepts and finishing with 15 kicks at 80 per cent efficiency. The 194cm defender rates elite for marks and intercept marks in the VFL.

Wade Derksen (Peel Thunder/WA)
Key forward, 20, 195cm, 90kg
After playing his first match for the year in the reserves, the Northern Territory native has made an immediate impression at WAFL senior level for Peel Thunder, kicking seven goals in three matches. highlight was a four goal, 15 contested possession and 22 disposal outing against West Coast’s reserves side playing in a forward-ruck role, starring with his athleticism in the air and at ground level.

Kim Kantilla (South Adelaide/SA)
Small forward, 179cm
Like Derksen, Kantilla started the season in the reserves and stood tall against an AFL reserves side in the Adelaide Crows. Just weeks after joining South Adelaide from the Tiwi Bombers, the X-Factor forward racked up 18 disposals, 11 marks and booted three goals against the Crows. He is the great grandson of David Kantilla, who is recognised as the first Indigenous Australian to play in the SANFL.

Liam Reidy (Frankston/VFL)
Ruck/forward, 21, 204cm
Reidy presents as an option for a club in search of a ruckman. The 204cm prospect is averaging nine touches, four tackles and 83 ranking points across seven matches for the Dolphins, impressing with his follow up work and competitiveness.

Zac Strom (South Fremantle/WA)
Key forward, 28, 198cm, 103kg
Strom has been in the WAFL system since 2013, playing 140 matches and kicking 69 goals. The 28-year-old has started this season strongly, averaging 14.7 disposals, 6.3 marks and kicking seven goals from his three matches, including three against the Eagles. Strom is a strong body that can make an instant impact at AFL level, and he trained with Fremantle during the pre-season in search of a list spot. Could one of the Western Australian clubs be in the frame?

Brett Turner (Glenelg/SA)
Midfielder, 25, 185cm, 88kg
Like others on this list, Turner turned it on against an AFL listed side in the Adelaide Crows. Try these numbers on for size – 38 disposals, 23 kicks, 27 uncontested possessions, 14 score involvements and four goals. The experienced midfielder hurt his foot in his next match and has not featured since but remains on the radar.

DAVEY MORE THAN JUST A SMALL FORWARD

Exciting Essendon father-son prospect Alwyn Davey Jnr has shown his ability to play through the midfield this year and has been hailed for having great “balance” in his game.

The son of former Bombers small forward Alwyn Davey, the Oakleigh Chargers product has had a strong start to the season in the NAB League and in school football with Xavier College.

Davey is part of the AFL Academy and will take on Collingwood’s VFL side on Saturday.

“He’s a small forward who’s also played a bit of midfield through Oakleigh and Xavier,” AFL Academy coach Tarkyn Lockyer said.

“The thing that I love about Alwyn and the recognition that he gets is that the balance in his game is excellent. His inside and outside balance, his offensive and defence balance — he values both. So he really is a well-rounded player, he’s got great finishing skills and he’s a really good decision maker. He has put together some really good form through the start of the year.”

Garthwaite has nominated for the MSD.

Former first-round picks, Plugger's nephew among early MSD nominations

By Callum Twomey
afl.com.au
23 May 2022

FORMER Kangaroo Sam Durdin, ex-Bombers Ned Cahill and Trent Mynott, delisted Bulldogs Will Hayes and Ben Cavarra, ex-Tiger Ryan Garthwaite and former Swan Matt Ling are among the first round of players to nominate for next week's NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

The AFL on Monday sent a list of 138 players who had their nominations for the mid-season draft approved, with prospects around the country having until Tuesday, 5pm AEST to lodge their nominations before a full list is circulated to recruiters later this week.

Players of varying age, experience and club interest have put forward their nominations since they opened on May 9, with North Melbourne's 2014 first-round pick Durdin among the former AFL players to be hoping for another shot at the top level.

The 25-year-old has been playing with Glenelg in the SANFL, while Cahill and Hayes, who were delisted by the Bombers and Bulldogs respectively last year, have been impressing with their form in Carlton's VFL side. Ling, a former first-round pick for Sydney, has been playing with Geelong's VFL side.

Ex-Port Adelaide trio Jake Patmore, Boyd Woodcock and Joel Garner have also nominated, as has former Blue Angus Schumacher, who has gathered some club interest ahead of the mid-season intake, and Cavarra who played four games for the Dogs.

Three players – Hugo Hall-Kahan, Max Ramsden and Jacob Bauer[/b] – have nominated 18-month contracts, meaning if selected the club that chooses them must sign them through to the end of 2023.

Hall-Kahan was one of 11 players the AFL gave exemptions to ahead of the mid-season nomination period, with fellow exemptions Wade Derksen, Kallan Dawson, Brett Turner and James Blanck among the inclusions on the list provided to clubs.

Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Jai Culley, who looms as one of the likely early picks at the mid-season draft next Wednesday, has also officially nominated, as has Jye Lockett, the nephew of goalkicking champion Tony.

Massimo D'Ambrosio (25 disposals, four inside-50s, four marks)

"Made good decisions all day. He certainly didn't look out of place at the level. His hands in particular and cleanliness at ground level really did stand out and he was one of our better players on the day."

We're one of six clubs interested in North Adelaide's 191cm forward/swingman Jacob Bauer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0KdYIp_stw

-----------------------------

North Adelaide forward Jacob Bauer tipped to be a certain selection in AFL mid-season draft

A high-flying prospect from NSW capable of playing at both ends of the ground shapes as a certain selection in next week’s AFL mid-season draft.

Jacob Bauer went undrafted last year out of the Swans’ Academy but has piqued the interest of at least six AFL clubs with a blistering start to the SANFL season for North Adelaide.

The 19-year-old is one of 14 prospects who will undergo medical testing ahead of the June 1 draft, with players requiring multiple clubs to nominate them.

Most of that group is tipped to find an AFL home on Wednesday week.

Bauer has requested an 18-month contract if he is drafted, which would take him through to the end of the 2023 season.

It’s believed both Sydney clubs – the Giants and Swans – Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond and Carlton are all showing interest in the 191cm swingman, who’s kicked 15 goals in five senior games this year.

Bauer’s averaging nine disposals, almost three marks inside 50 and five score involvements per game.

After the teenager starred down back in a pre-season trial game against the Crows’ reserves then started the season in the reserves, the Roosters swung him forward with great effect.

The only match Bauer’s missed since was because of a concussion.

Among his 15 goals were consecutive bags of five, with his North Adelaide coach Jacob Surjan, who played 121 AFL games for Port Adelaide, saying he had matured with his move from Sydney to Adelaide.

The knock on Bauer from clubland is his ground-ball and contested work, but Surjan said he was already showing improvement.

“He has a great ability to mark the ball and read the flight of the ball in the air. He’s really competitive as well and he’s a beautiful set shot,” Surjan told News Corp.

“He knows the areas of the game that he needs to get better at, but he’s got a lot of things that AFL clubs need and like.

“I don’t think he needs to get bigger, but he just needs to get stronger in his body and with his contest, and if he gets into an AFL environment, he’s got plenty of time for that.”

As opposed to other state league coaches who have been disgruntled about losing promising players during a season, Surjan could not be happier for Bauer.

North Adelaide has targeted Sydney as a fertile recruiting ground but Bauer actually contacted the club after seeing some of his peers head there.

“I’m going to be very excited if Jacob is potentially the first development kid drafted through the mid-season draft from North Adelaide,” he said.

“Part of our job is obviously to win premierships at our club, but we still know that we’re a feeder competition to the AFL and we need to try to develop kids to try and get into the AFL as quickly as possible.

“Jacob’s development in the last little bit has been great. He’s very driven, he wants to get the best out of himself and he’s a really humble kid.”

Mid-season draft: The 26 leading contenders in line for an AFL shot

By Callum Twomey, Riley Beveridge, Josh Gabelich
afl.com.au
25 May 2022

THE COUNTDOWN is on for next week's NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft as clubs scour the country to find the best available talents.

At this stage nearly 20 list spots are open around the competition for clubs to use selections, with recruiters and list managers having until after round 11 to settle on their choices before the draft on June 1.

Will clubs look for a ready-to-play mature-age option to come in and fill an immediate need? Or will they go younger and try to get some of the best available 19-year-olds who were overlooked in last year's draft? Will they back in the talls again like last year's mid-season intake or see the development of Hawthorn success story Jai Newcombe and go that way?

Here is AFL.com.au's list of 26 of the leading candidates for the mid-season rookie draft, which will be streamed live and exclusively on AFL.com.au and the AFL Live Official App next Wednesday from 6.30pm AEST.

Connor Ballenden
The former Brisbane Lions big man is among the group of 14 mid-season prospects to have undergone medicals this week, a strong indicator of club interest in him. Ballenden's size – 200cm and 100kg – means he could fill a need for a club searching for key position or ruck depth for the second half of the season. Since playing three AFL games and being delisted at the end of last year Ballenden has played with Woodville West Torrens in the SANFL, averaging 17 disposals.

James Blanck
The Hawks looked at Blanck to train with them as a potential pre-season supplemental period selection but he was ineligible after not nominating for last year's draft. However, after gaining an AFL exemption to qualify for the mid-season draft, Blanck is again on the radar and the Hawks could look at him given he has been under their noses at Box Hill. The 21-year-old is a 195cm key defender who contests well.

Jacob Bauer
Bauer was overlooked by Sydney during last year's draft process, having graduated from the club’s Academy system. He has since moved to North Adelaide, and into the forward line, where he's had an immediate impact with his athleticism and high-leaping marking ability. The 191cm forward kicked 13 goals from his first three SANFL games, with clubs noting some strong AFL attributes particularly in the air. Still just 19, and still adjusting to his new position in attack, clubs believe there is plenty of growth remaining in his game.

Josh Carmichael
Carmichael comes into the mid-season draft with plenty of clubs keen. The 22-year-old is a genuine bolter after graduating from country football in the Sunraysia league to the SANFL with West Adelaide. At 189cm and 88kg Carmichael looks ready to make an impact in an AFL side and has averaged 24 disposals, five clearances and a goal a game this season so far. Another player who gained an exemption to be available to clubs.

Lachie Carrigan
After not playing any football in 2020 or 2021 due to compartment syndrome that required four different operations and both calves to be operated on, including an emergency procedure to have a clot removed, Carrigan has caught the eye of clubs across the past two months. Despite limited exposure, the Richmond playmaker has stood out in the VFL and in the Young Guns Series with his penetrating left foot, ability to break the lines and blend of speed and endurance. The 19-year-old starred in Colgate Young Guns Series, collecting 22 disposals and seven rebound 50s against Vic Country on Sunday after finishing with 20 disposals and eight marks against Vic Metro earlier this month.

Jai Culley
A contender for the No.1 choice in the mid-season draft after an exciting first half of the season. Culley was overlooked at last year's draft after playing largely as a forward but has stamped himself as a 193cm midfield prospect this season with the Dandenong Stingrays. Had a huge game in the Young Guns contest against Vic Metro, kicking 4.2 from 22 disposals, five tackles and three clearances and has received strong interest from clubs. Could he be the next Jai Newcombe?

Massimo D'Ambrossio
The sharp-kicking defender has increased his stocks this season after not getting a shot in his draft year in 2021. The 18-year-old comes from the Western Jets program but has also played for Richmond's VFL side, including last weekend when he had 25 disposals and four inside-50s on the MCG. The 178cm prospect is an elite kick and starred for the Young Guns, with games of 24 and 32 disposals in successive weeks. Can play on the wing or half-back.

Kallan Dawson
Dawson has emerged as one of the mid-season draft's most appealing key defensive options, having been granted a late AFL exemption to nominate. The 194cm Williamstown prospect has played his best footy as a third tall in the backline, where he's able to peel off and intercept. He's averaged 13 disposals and 6.9 marks per game in the VFL this year, while his speed has also made him a damaging rebounding threat. Set to turn 24 later this season, clubs view him as a ready-made defensive option.

Wade Derksen
Derksen is one name that is making recruiters scramble late, meeting with six clubs already and two more to come ahead of next week. The 197cm key position prospect signed with Peel Thunder this year after an injury interrupted and COVID affected stint in Essendon's VFL program before returning to Nightcliff in the Northern Territory. Derksen is understood to be prepared to go anywhere to land an AFL opportunity. The 20-year-old has played only three league games in the WAFL and missed last weekend due to COVID, but he caught the eyes of recruiters when he kicked four goals from 22 disposals and seven marks against West Coast.

Patrick Dozzi
Dozzi returned to the Northern Knights this year, where he has played his best football as an inside midfielder. At 185cm, clubs believe he can also play on a wing given his strong aerobic capacity and his ability to use the ball on both sides. He's averaged 22.8 disposals and seven tackles in the NAB League this year, but put his name on the mid-season draft radar with a stellar Young Guns game where he won 34 disposals and nine clearances against Vic Country playing as a contested ball winner.

Mutaz El Nour
El Nour has shown plenty of promising development as a key-position defender for the Northern Bullants this season. Seen by AFL clubs as a third tall defender, El Nour is a strong intercept player and has averaged 17.9 disposals and 6.3 marks per game at VFL level so far this year. Listed at 192cm, El Nour is believed to have grown considerably this season, potentially helping his ability to play on bigger bodies in the senior system.

Oskar Faulkhead
A good run of form at the right time has put Faulkhead in the mix for a mid-season berth. The running midfielder collected 29 disposals and nine tackles for Bendigo Pioneers in round five of the NAB League then backed it up with a team-high 27 disposals for the Young Guns against Vic Metro and then 31 touches and two classy goals against Vic Country. It's a three-week patch that might see the 182cm ball-getter win a chance, having last week also played for Geelong's VFL side.

Jake Florenca
Florenca didn't nominate for last year's NAB AFL Draft after rupturing his Achilles tendon in the 2020 WAFL finals series, but has quickly emerged as a player of interest in 2022. The 25-year-old showed he is capable of playing at the highest level when he was called upon by West Coast as a top-up player in round eight, collecting 19 disposals, 13 contested possessions and seven tackles against Brisbane at the Gabba. The Eagles are believed to be interested in the ball magnet who is averaging 33 disposals, 20 contested possessions and seven tackles a game in the WAFL, after amassing 41 disposals and two goals against Peel Thunder last weekend.

Video 2: https://www.afl.com.au/video/765499/wafl-showreel-r5-jake-florenca-highlights

Ethan Grace
Clubs have been watching Grace, who is a member of the Giants Academy and was overlooked at last year's drafts. The 181cm forward kicked four goals in his last game for the Giants in the NAB League against Bendigo and had booted three goals the previous game against Sandringham. Kicks the ball well and has impressed with his improvement since last year. The Giants, like all clubs, don't get any Academy rights over players at the mid-season draft.

Hugo Hall-Kahan
An exciting medium forward who has impressed with his tricks inside 50 in the first half of the season with the Sandringham Dragons. The 188cm goalkicker booted five majors in round two this season and another four in round four and last week had 20 disposals in the NAB League. He was also a standout for the Young Guns, including kicking two goals against Vic Country's under-18 side. Turning 19 later this year, Hall-Kahan capable of marking in the air and also doing some snapping or creating a chance from nothing at ground level. He won an exemption to nominate for the draft after not nominating last year.

Fletcher Hart
Hart has improved considerably in his over-age year, having missed his first draft chance with the Murray Bushrangers last season. Still just 18 years old, the 199cm key forward kicked six goals from 15 disposals and 10 marks in a dominant NAB League display against the NT Thunder earlier this season to put his name on the map. Clubs have identified AFL attributes in his marking and kicking ability.

Jye Menzie
Menzie moved to the SANFL from Tasmania this season, enjoying a productive start with South Adelaide. The 180cm small forward burst onto the scene, kicking 10 goals from his first two games and displaying some electric ground-level speed in attack. He has an endless desire to compete and hit the scoreboard, with his aerobic capacity enabling him to get higher up the ground on occasions. Set to turn 20 later this year, clubs rate Menzie's ability to scrap at every contest.

Mitch O'Neill
The former West Coast rookie has put himself back on the radar of AFL clubs following a dominant start to the SANFL season. O'Neill was delisted after two years on the Eagles' list without playing a game. But after a decent season at South Adelaide in 2021, the Tasmanian has exploded this year, averaging 29.8 disposals, 6.3 inside 50s, 6.3 tackles and 5.7 clearances per game. The 21-year-old also starred in the state game against Western Australia earlier this month and some believe he could come in and make an impact at AFL level in the second half of the season if given the opportunity.

Max Ramsden
Ramsden took the eye of recruiters at the start of the NAB League season playing in the ruck for the Sandringham Dragons. The 202cm prospect is athletic and can move around the ground exceptionally well for his size, having run a 6:04 2km time trial over summer. He played for the Young Guns side recently and has averaged 15 disposals and nearly 20 hitouts a game for the Dragons at under-18 level. If clubs go down the path of last year, when they selected seven young ruck prospects mid-season, then Ramsden shapes as an obvious target.

Liam Reidy
Clubs are searching for ruckmen around the country and may look to Frankston for a solution. Reidy has played as in attack and in the ruck across the first half of the season, catching the eye of recruiters with his ability around the ground as much as in the ruck. Reidy was granted a late exemption by the AFL after playing a single VFL game in 2021. The Dolphins signed him from East Brighton on the eve of last season and have enjoyed a spike from the 203cm athletic tall.

Will Reinhold
A tall defender who can also play up the ground on the wing. The 21-year-old was among the AFL's first batch of players to receive an exemption to nominate for the mid-season intake after playing at country level last season. A cousin of Brisbane star and former Bombers forward Joe Daniher, Reinhold has played in the VFL with Port Melbourne this season and is a neat left-foot kick.

Zac Strom
Fremantle and Brisbane both showed strong interest in Strom during the pre-season supplemental selection period, but neither club was able to invite the South Fremantle utility to train ahead of the deadline because of his ineligibility. The 28-year-old chiropractor has built an impressive professional career away from football, but was prepared to put his life on hold when the Dockers and Lions showed interest in February and is still hoping they come knocking on June 1. The 198cm utility has been a star for South Fremantle in the WAFL for a long time and could plug some holes for AFL sides in the second half of 2022.

Brynn Teakle
Teakle is developing nicely as a 203cm ruckman at WAFL level for East Fremantle. Highly skilled for a big man, Teakle can also go forward where he uses his size and physicality to his advantage. Clubs believe the 22-year-old’s ruck work is gradually improving, which has seen him average 14.2 disposals and 18.2 hitouts per game this season. There is still plenty of growth in his game, but clubs view his development to date as evidence that he could mature into an AFL-ready player in due time. Teakle was in the mix for a rookie spot at Essendon ahead of the 2020 season and featured in a pre-season game.
(https://resources.afl.com.au/photo-resources/2020/03/03/064f6262-286d-4990-ae53-cb10f7a5f44a/Brynn-Teakle-competes-with-Nic-Naitanui-in-the-ruck.JPG?width=1064&height=600)

Brett Turner
Turner is on the radar of clubs after getting an exemption to be available mid-season. The Glenelg player's best game of this year came against Adelaide's SANFL side, when he had 38 disposals and booted four goals in a best-afield display. Did the Crows see enough that day to take a look with their mid-season pick? He had a foot injury the following week so his sample size this season is small but the 185cm midfielder could appeal as a ready-to-play option given he is 25.

Casey Voss
Voss emerged as a mid-season draft contender with a dominant state game for the SANFL side earlier this month, where he won 28 disposals and took 15 marks to claim the Fos Williams Medal for best on ground. It was a contest where the prolific half-back displayed plenty of the smart, creative tendencies he has shown for Sturt this season to average 23.0 disposals and 10.6 marks per game. Set to turn 22 later this year, Voss is the son of triple-premiership Brisbane legend and current Carlton coach Michael. However, the Blues have already ruled out selecting him with one of their two picks.

Zane Williams
The Woodville-West Torrens forward has caught the attention of clubs this season in the SANFL. The 20-year-old has booted 13 goals from seven games, including a haul of five goals against Glenelg early in the season. At 183cm he is sharp with the ball in hand and creates chances and has been linked to clubs searching for a small forward option.

D'Ambrossio looks to have dislocated his shoulder for our ressies. Arm in a sling. Poor bloke will now probably be overlooked in the MSD.

Mid-season draft: club-by-club preview

By Andrew Wu and Peter Ryan
The Age
May 29, 2022

Richmond

Pick range: 10

Needs: The Tigers have picked experienced players in previous editions of this draft but this shapes as the year they look for youth, with speed likely to be a priority area.

Potential targets: Western Jets product Massimo D’Ambrossio is a dashing defender and an exceptional left-foot kick who would add flair to the Tigers’ backline. Skilled wingman Lachie Carrigan, from their VFL team, is another option.

What every clubs needs in the mid-season draft

Chris Doerre
ESPN
30 May 2022

Richmond

Likely number of picks: 1

Greatest list need: Quality inside midfielder

Who should they pick: A COVID fill-in for West Coast in their Round 8 AFL clash against Brisbane, Jake Florenca stepped up and secured a team high 13 contested possessions and an equal team high seven tackles in a strong midfield display. With Richmond's midfield lacking potency around stoppages, Florenca would give the Richmond midfield a much-needed boost.

Mitch Cleary on 7news just said we want to pick up North Adelaide forward Jacob Bauer in the MSD tomorrow night.

Richmond officials have flown over to Adelaide in recent days to meet the 19 year old.

We're hoping GWS (#5) or Collingwood (#9) don't grab him before our pick 10.

Seems a strange strategy to publicise your preference in the mid season draft when the quality is quite thin. Tells me it might be Tigers playing tactical games as has been mentioned. You can almost guarantee he will be gone by our pick now.

Probably a smokescreen so we can get another 180cm HBF like Massimo lol

Dead set if a forward with talent is available it's probably our biggest need.

Richmond tipped to target SANFL forward in mid-season draft

The 19-year-old has kicked 16 goals for North Adelaide this season.

JUNE 1, 2022 - 10:14AM

Richmond are reportedly set to select North Adelaide's Jacob Bauer in tonight's mid-season draft, per reports from Channel 7's Mitch Cleary.

Bauer, who has played six games in the SANFL this season, has piqued the interest of several AFL clubs. The 19-year-old was formerly part of the Swans' Academy, but went undrafted.

Kicking 16 goals this season, averaging nine disposals and five score involvements per game, Bauer is looming as a forward replacement for the ageing Jack Riewoldt down at Punt Road.

Reports suggest that GWS and Collingwood are also interested in the 19-year-old, but Cleary has reported that Tigers staff recently flew to Adelaide to meet the young forward.

"He's every chance to land in Richmond's forward line if he isn't snapped up by GWS and Collingwood earlier," Cleary said on 7 News.

"Tigers recruiters recently flew to Adelaide to meet with the 19-year-old.

"They're looking for extra firepower in attack with Jack Riewoldt potentially in his last year."

Shifter Sheehan's 11 names for the midseason draft

SEN
1 June 2022

Jai Culley
(Dandenong Stingrays)

“He looks like he’d play for North or West Coast straight away.

“I’m not sure he gets to four (to Adelaide) but he may.”

Max Ramsden
(Sandringham Dragons)

“I like him for the long term. A ruckman at 203(cm).

“He plays like a ruck-rover in the old term we used to use.

“He’d go early if you’re looking to the future.”

Josh Carmichael
(West Adelaide)

“He’s grabbed his opportunity this year, he played well in the state game.

“I think looks certain to get an opportunity.

“The clubs have surrounded him and had a good look at him.”

Oskar Faulkhead
(Bendigo Pioneers)

“He has AFL attributes but just hasn’t had that breakout game.

“This year he’s had about six of those breakout games. Outstanding in the Young Guns game, outstanding for the Bendigo Pioneers.

“At 19 years of age, he’s starting to mature and he’s another name to look for.”

Mutaz Al Nour
(Northern Bullants)

“He’s a Sudanese boy from the Northern Bullants.

“He plays a lot taller than his height. He’s 192(cm), probably plays like a 196 with his leap and athleticism.

“He’s a definitely a chance. Has played in the VFL all year and comes out of local footy in the years past.

“He’s a contender to play that tall defender role (for a club in need).”

Wade Derksen
(Peel Thunder)

“Wade Derksen is 197(cm) and is more of a forward than a defender.

“He’s a bit of a goalkicker. He kicked four games in a game for Peel Thunder against the Eagles reserves.

“Hasn’t played a lot of footy. Comes from up in the NT. He’s big, a genuine size.”

Harvey Gallagher
(Bendigo Pioneers)

“He’s a chance later on.

“He’s kicked his four and five goals playing as a small forward.”

Lachlan Carrigan
(Richmond VFL)

“I think he’s a lock.

“He had compartment syndrome and missed two years of footy in ‘20 and ‘21.

“He was on the radar last year and taken to the combine to check his injuries, but we had no form on him except a practice match at the start of the year.

“He’s killed them this year. He looks a real player.

“He starred across half-back in those Young Guns games. Left-footer, great user of the footy.”

Jye Menzie
(South Adelaide)

“He kicked 10 goals in the first couple of games.

“He was a boy in Allies contention last year and the year before.

“He’s special around goals. He can surprise one-on-one with his marking and his jump.”

Brandon Leary
(Tassie Mariners)

“He kicked close to 40 goals at senior level in their state league last year.

“I’ve seen him kick six in a game this year. He might have kicked about 15 in five games.

“He’s got some tricks. He makes the freakish goals look quite normal.”

Casey Voss
(Sturt)

“I could see him getting a go.

“Casey deserves a chance. You can’t do much more than win the Fos Williams Medal in a state game.

“He’s played well, he’s always been able to find the footy, his footy IQ is very high, uses it well.

“He can play straight away. I’d love to see him get a chance.”

Richmond, which is reportedly keen to add forward firepower to its list at Pick 10, has been strongly linked to Bauer – a former Swans academy prospect that’s thrived in the SANFL this season playing as a 191cm hybrid forward. After spending the pre-season in defence, Bauer was swung forward early in the season with great effect, booting 13.4 from his first three SANFL league games. Although the Tigers would also find it tough to overlook either Carmichael or D’Ambrosio – the latter has played a couple of games for the Tigers’ VFL team – if they were still on the board.
