Wow.

I know we usually love these but this one is particularly appealing to me. Sensational and what a great way to honour one of our indigenous men once again.

Lloyd said yesterday morning he wants a "line in the sand" game from Essendon. So are they now going to act like a bunch of snipers off the ball because they can't win the footy  ::).

Guernsey clash nightmare for Dreamtime game? Bombers, Tigers to don mostly black jumpers

Damien Ractliffe
The Age

(https://static.ffx.io/images/$zoom_0.483%2C$multiply_2.1164%2C$ratio_1.5%2C$width_756%2C$x_859%2C$y_444/t_crop_custom/q_62%2Cf_auto/2c1b07197fca95e36b6a6d089967501090c71f1f)

A potential jumper clash threatens to make Saturday night’s Dreamtime at the ’G a confusing spectacle after both Richmond and Essendon produced predominantly black strips for this year’s blockbuster.

The Bombers will wear white shorts as the away team in the MCG fixture, but both their guernsey and the Tigers’ are largely black with splashes of red and yellow respectively, which has the potential to cause problems for fans and commentators.

Richmond’s jumper was designed by Marlion Pickett, together with his partner Jessica Nannup, and features Pickett’s family totem, The Kaarak, a red-tailed black cockatoo.

The cockatoo is represented as flying on the design, to signify the Pickett family’s move from Perth to Melbourne. They will wear black shorts as the home side on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, Essendon’s strip was designed by Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti. It features the footprints of the Bombers’ past First Nations players, while also representing “the pathway and journey through different terrains and lands to the NEC Hangar, our central meeting place”, according to the Bombers’ website.

When the clubs revealed their designs earlier this month, both said on their websites they would wear the jumpers for the Dreamtime game, but the potential clash only became clear after Essendon’s Tex Wanganeen and Richmond’s Maurice Rioli junior were pictured together on Monday in the guernseys as part of a promotional launch of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

The AFL were contacted by The Age on Monday, but did not respond before deadline. Essendon and Richmond declined to comment on a potential clash.

Richmond have eight Indigenous players on their list. Shane Edwards (Arrernte country), Daniel and Maurice Rioli (Tiwi Islands), Shai Bolton and Marlion Pickett (Noongar) all played in Saturday’s game against Hawthorn.

At the bottom of the jumper, the players are illustrated as warriors and “their different journeys to Richmond from all around Australia are displayed in the yellow sash, highlighting the football club as a central place where each can connect, share stories, and play football”, according to the Tigers’ website.

Saturday’s clash will be the first played in Melbourne since 2019, after the past two games were relocated to Perth and Darwin respectively due to the pandemic. It will be the 16th time that the annual fixture has been played at the home of football.

All eyes will be on Essendon following their disappointing loss to Sydney on Saturday night, which prompted club great and former captain Matthew Lloyd to draw a line in the sand.

Lol the whole idea is to get people to look at their structure how many talls how many mediums how many smalls, to look at their spine to look if they are undersized where do they have it over us if at all. where do we have it over them where can we hurt em it goes on.if i was real keen id do their age and games played to look at their maturity and experience.

In fact there's 8 juniors 18 - 21 in that team 6 aged 22 - 24. just 5 in their prime 25-28 and 4 vets aged 29+ it also contains just 5 players with 100 games. that there tells us we are up against a pretty young and inexperienced team. A team we should beat especially with all players available bar one.

The Tigers have won three in a row to climb inside the top eight, whereas the Bombers languish in 16th with only two victories from nine games this season.

But Hardwick said the ladder differential was largely “irrelevant” on big stages like the Dreamtime at the ‘G, which was held in Perth and Darwin the past two years because of the pandemic.

“We know they’re very, very capable. They’re well-coached and well-drilled,” he said.

“Sometimes, for whatever reason, players lack confidence (but) that can quickly turn with a good start, so we’ve got to make sure we start the game and match their vigour.

“There’s no question they’ll be up for the battle, as will we. We’ve just got to make sure that our consistency level goes for the full four quarters. If we look after our patch of grass, we’re going to be OK, we think.”

Dust bunnies: Tiger superstar's impressive record against Bombers

If history is any indication, Dustin Martin is likely to put on a show against Essendon in round 10

By Sarah Black
afl.com.au
18 May 2010

WE ALL know Lance Franklin doesn't mind tearing it up against Essendon, but a certain Dustin Martin also has an excellent record against the Bombers.

The Tigers superstar is the only player to have won two Yiooken Awards for best-afield in the Dreamtime at the 'G game, but hasn't just reserved his best form to the annual Sir Doug Nicholls Round clash.

Martin averages 26.6 disposals and 1.3 goals from his 19 matches against Essendon.

He has a better goal ratio against four other sides (Adelaide, Brisbane, North Melbourne and West Coast), and averages more touches against three teams (Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn and Gold Coast), but no club sits higher on both average goals and disposals than the Bombers.

What have been Martin's best Bomber games to date?

ROUND 10, 2016
38 disposals, 10 marks, seven clearances, three Brownlow votes, Yiooken Award

While a year away from his Brownlow-winning season, Martin feasted on an undermanned Essendon in its year of top-up players. The Tigers galloped away to a 38-point win as Martin recorded a then-career best 38 touches, with 21 to the main break as no Bomber was able to contain the superstar.

ROUND 17, 2016
43 disposals, 22 contested possessions, 14 clearances, two goals, three Brownlow votes

The Bombers were gluttons for punishment when less than two months later, Martin turned in another best-on-ground performance. At this point of the season, Essendon's veteran top-up players were tiring, and Martin was simply on another level, sealing the 19-point victory with a set shot from 45m on the boundary.

ROUND 10, 2017
30 disposals, seven tackles, six clearances, one goal, three Brownlow votes, Yiooken Award

One of Martin's 11 three-vote games in his Brownlow year of 2017 came against Essendon. The Tigers broke their dispiriting three-game streak where all matches were lost in the final minutes with a 15-point triumph over the Bombers. Martin's seven tackles was a team high, while his major kickstarted the team's run of the last four goals of the game.

ROUND 22, 2018
26 disposals, 10 marks, six inside 50s, four goals, three Brownlow votes

Richmond had hit its scintillating top form in 2018, notching up its 20th straight win at the MCG with an eight-point win over the Bombers. Martin combined his dual role between the midfield and deep forward beautifully, with a team-high 26 disposals and game-high 10 marks.

ROUND 12, 2021
27 disposals, 10 contested possessions, three goals, two Brownlow votes

In the first Dreamtime in Perth match, the Bombers took the lead in the fourth after being 30 points adrift. Martin wasn't having any of that, kick-starting the Tigers' run with a 50m bomb on the run as the team coasted to a 39-point win. The superstar was also key to his side setting up the lead in the first place.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

* Round nine, 2015 – 25 disposals, seven marks, three clearances, one goal, one Brownlow vote
* Round 11, 2018 – 28 disposals, seven clearances, five marks, one goal, two Brownlow votes
* Round 10, 2019 – 35 disposals, seven marks, eight clearances, one Brownlow vote
* Round 13, 2020 – 30 disposals, seven clearances, three marks, one goal, one Brownlow vote

Apparently Essendon did full-contact match simulation at training.

Brutal Bombers go all-out in ‘full contact’ training, but it’s left an ex-AFL coach ‘nervous’

Former Adelaide senior coach Brenton Sanderson says he’s “nervous” about the long-term effects of Essendon’s bruising training session ahead of a crunch game against Richmond in round 10.

Bombers players participated in a full-contact match simulation ahead of the Dreamtime game against the Tigers, following a week of intense scrutiny both on and off the field amid a horror start to the season.

Speaking on SEN, Sanderson said the tactic, while effective in the short-term, could have consequences down the line for the 16th-placed side.

“I’m nervous because – and I understand exactly why because you’re trying to replicate that hard edge at training that flows into the game – but unfortunately when you pull that trigger and you’re trying to teach contested ball and contest method at training under match conditions with mouthguards and full contact, there is a flow-on effect in a positive way to the weekend, but it can also have a negative effect as well,” Sanderson said.

“You take a fatigued group - If the game is close in the fourth quarter and you need run, you’ve had a big week on the track and obviously there’s contact injuries as well, I’m sure there will be a handful of corked thighs, corked calf muscles, and some sore bodies going into the game, which you don’t want.

“You want your 22 to be fresh and ready and alert and ready to play… (but) you understand why he does it.”

Once again we're everyone else's GF ::). No doubt they will throw caution to the wind and try to play fast attacking footy as they can't defend.

We need to come out firing ourselves and control the game on the scoreboard. Don't give them a sniff and put them back in their box. Similar to what Carlton did to GWS last week when everyone was expecting the Giants to be fired up yet the Blues kicked the first 4 goals of the game.

ESSENDON TO DEBUT SCALED BACK GAME PLAN AFTER GOING “BACK TO BASICS”

“Essendon has gone back to basics,” Sam McClure said on Sportsday.

“They told the board and their players that they are scaling back the game plan and are going back to the contested, effort and pressure-based side which made them a blue-collar finals team last year.

“Josh Mahoney and Ben Rutten have gone to the board and said they are going to strip (the game plan) back and re-align their focus because they’re not getting want they want.

“They are going back to the basics of what made them a finals team last year.

“That in itself isn’t dramatic or drastic, there are plenty of footy clubs (where similar things have happened). It does happen fairly regularly in footy.”

Round 10 Preview - Richmond vs Essendon

Andrew Slevison
SEN
20 May 2022

The Dreamtime match returns to Melbourne for the first time since 2019 after the 2020 and 2021 instalments were played in Darwin and Perth respectively.

Richmond won comfortably last year after a tight finish the year before and now have claimed 11 on the trot against Essendon in a winning streak that dates back to 2014.

The Tigers enter this edition of Dreamtime at the ‘G on the back of three consecutive victories which has straightened up their season, resulting in them sitting in the top eight.

Damien Hardwick’s side has unlocked their scoring potential in recent weeks, reeling off scores of 165, 113 and 117, to be the competition’s second highest scoring team (prior to the round) behind Brisbane with 899 points, at an average of 99.

On the other end of the scale, the Bombers have conceded three scores of 100+ in their last five outings and have the third leakiest defence in the league leading into this weekend. They are also struggling to put a winning score together, averaging just 76 points per game for the year.

Questions have been asked of Ben Rutten and his side in recent weeks and they simply must respond on a significant date on the footy calendar.

But with their attacking game up and about, and Tom Lynch in devastating form with 17 goals in three weeks, expect the Tigers’ streak over the Bombers to continue.

Tip: Richmond by 25 points.

Tigers bracing for fired-up Bombers

Richmond are expecting to face a hardened Essendon outfit in Saturday night's Dreamtime at the G clash.

By Anna Harrington
AAP
21 May 2022

Richmond are bracing for the full wrath of an Essendon outfit out to prove a point in Saturday's Dreamtime at the G clash.

"We expect a really hardened outfit," Richmond veteran Jack Riewoldt said at Punt Road Oval on Friday morning.

"Obviously, they're not going as well as they would have liked to be going but football is a fickle game.

"You're five per cent off or you're five per cent further on the results can change pretty quickly.

"We expect a really hardened Essendon Football Club to come out and fire shots early. So it's very prudent of us to be ready to go."

Yup should have been holding the ball before anyway. Then the video umpire geeeeeez. Plays for 2mins watching the same footage over and over. Why didn’t he play the edge? Isn’t that basically as definitive as you can get for posters?

Some seriously entertaining little league at half time haha. Club getting right behind some massive unit with long hair jagging goals left and right.

What a great night for the kid.

Bloke who should get done for charging is Francis on Nank.

Disgraceful and cowardly thing to do charging a bloke clean in the back from behind. Not even a 50m penalty either. Disgusted. I seriously don't know how the F I can bring myself to go to another game with these umps.

Nearly lost my voice I am so stuffing mad.

If we have no Lynch next week and no Balta to swing forward who the hell plays key forward with Jack? Or do we just go 2017 midget again?

Jack, Dusty, Bolton, MRJ, George ugh and who else?

Don't think we'll be beating Sydney personally.

Arguably George & Ross' best games for the year.

Not opposed to Gibcus going forward either myself.

Tarrant was solid tonight. Him + Grimes + Miller down back should be OK. Gibcus a good mark and kick.

Had to look at the shorts but otherwise not too bad.

If they wore a reverse guernsey (red with black stripe, white shorts) I think it would have been better.

ESSENDON defender Mason Redman has been offered a one-match ban for his elbow to the throat of Richmond's Dion Prestia.

Redman raised his forearm as Prestia attempted to block his path during the second quarter of Richmond's Dreamtime win on Saturday.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct, low impact, and high contact, drawing a one-match ban.

Prestia appeared on ABC Radio on Sunday with a hoarse voice and was asked if it had anything to do with Redman's forearm connecting with his throat.

"It might, it might. Maybe there was another incident that I don't know about, but yeah, it might be," Prestia said.

"It took me by surprise a bit but I'm sure they'll sort that out themselves."

I'm more disappointed that Francis wasn't sited for charging into Nank's back. Thought that was worse.

Wasn’t it great to see that the Pride flag was back in the cheer squad on Saturday night in all its rainbow glory   :rollin

It’s so so so important for Richmond to be seen to be inclusive that we must have the pride flag visual representation so everyone knows about it especially for the blockbuster games and it happens to be the biggest flag out there too.  :clapping :lol

I wonder if I make a big Christian flag for a “footy game” if I will be welcomed with open arms by everyone down there at the club too. I’ll only make my flag half the size as the pride flag so I don’t look as proud as they are    :lol :rollin

Don’t use too much brain power fellas I was only just thinking out loud.  :rollin :rollin

Clearly it’s not enough that the rainbow gender affirming “people” haven’t just hijacked the AFLW but in the AFL we also need to celebrate a lifestyle too and footy must be seen to embrace it by dressing in rainbow and pink and rainbow socks and might as well wear tassels on the nipples and arseless chaps too whilst getting the goal umpires to wave rainbow flags when a goal is kicked and let everyone know about how much we affirm and accept it because it’s got so much to do with footy.  :rollin

If there was such a thing as a Christian flag it would actually be unnecessary to bring it to a footy match and I doubt very much it would be equally accepted and affirmed.

I just remember the days when Footy used to be just entertaining and it didn’t feel the need to bring any social or religious ideological commentary to the game because the game was enough without it. I miss those days.

If I want a church I’ll go to one.

Every-time I drive past a busy intersection, every second one of them has a church on it. Normally with a bad slogan out the front.

Christianity has a louder voice than it’s relevance to the modern world.
Good luck to them.

If people want to wave a rainbow flag as a small vote for recognition then good for them too.

The time for Christianity to have a complete monopoly over voice and expression in this country disappeared many years ago.

Thank god.

Only at the blockbuster games. Makes me think it may be a club thing rather than just a proud fan.
