Adam Kingsley has spoken for the first time since being installed as Greater Western Sydney’s next full-time coach.
Kingsley’s appointment was announced on Monday evening, and on Tuesday afternoon he addressed the media.
The 47-year-old remains an assistant coach at Richmond where he’ll look to win a third premiership in his time at the club, and he said his full focus still remains with the Tigers.
Richmond plays Brisbane on Thursday week to open the finals series.
However, a complicating factor centres around Giants midfielder Tim Taranto.
The 24-year-old hasn’t yet signed a new deal for the Giants and is reported to have serious interest from both Richmond or Collingwood ahead of the upcoming trade period.
Given Kingsley now has a foot in both camps, he addressed the conundrum on Tuesday.
“To be fair, I’ve just been appointed, I haven’t yet sat down with Jason McCartney (Giants football manager) and worked through what the list looks like,” he told reporters.
“He’ll be fully across what his expectations are, at some point in time we’ll have that discussion and try and work out where we both stand on it and what the plan is moving forward.”
When asked if he’ll have conversations with Giants players given at least four are linked with a move away from the club, Kingsley reaffirmed his commitment to Richmond.
“Once Jason and I have our discussions and put our heads together, we’ll formulate a plan that certainly assists the Giants but doesn’t compromise Richmond in the short term,” he replied.
“As I’ve said, that’s where my focus lies, at Richmond. But that's not to say I won’t have some discussions with some key people at the club (GWS).”
SEN Chief Reporter Sam Edmund reported on Tuesday Taranto will make a decision by the end of the week and had been “determined” to meet the club’s new coach.
Edmund also suggested Taranto was the player the Giants most wanted to keep among several on the outer.
While some could see Kingsley’s position as one with divided loyalties, that’s not how Dwayne Russell views the situation.
He believes Kingsley’s role as an assistant will have had little overlap with list management and therefore no conflict.
“As an assistant coach at the Tigers, he wouldn’t be part of the player retention and player recruitment side of the Richmond Football Club anyway,” Russell said.
“I’m not sure they would have any list management meetings that involve any assistant coaches the way I see it, so I don’t think there’s a conflict there.”
Taranto, who was taken with the second pick of the 2016 National Draft, averaged 25.5 disposals, 3.9 inside 50s and 3.8 marks per game in 2022.

7news tonight had vision of Taranto arriving at Melbourne airport. He's here to see his manager, catch up with his family, and hold talks with Richmond and Collingwood.
Tom Browne said Richmond currently leads the race and that the Pies have limited salary cap space chasing McStay & Hill and holding onto De Goey.

As a 21 yo he picked up 720 disposals, 165 tackles, 137 clearances, and 11 goals in 2019. Still only 24. So apparently he's an absolute jet.

Dunno how to post photos on here but just looking at his career stats on The AFL app, rated elite for disposals, contested possessions, kicks and clearances and above average for metres gained and score involvements. Also has above average and elite tackling and pressure acts this seasons so is no sloucher defensively either. Seems like the area with the most room for improvement is his disposal efficiency which at 69% is rated below average for this season although it’s worth noting that this is still above the likes of Oliver, petracca and Prestia.
Won the giants b&f in their grand final year at age 21 and is still only 24 years old now. Great player now with plenty of upside. Fingers crossed he really does want to come here.

Richmond is emerging as the favorite to land Tim Taranto after a Collingwood curveball caused by one of his GWS teammates.
Taranto, 24, is the biggest name to leave the Giants as the club faces another exodus in the AFL trade period.
With multiple teammates in the mix to move around, it’s perhaps no surprise that one has affected another’s plans.
7NEWS Melbourne’s Tom Browne recently reported that Taranto, who spent some time in the Victorian capital this week, is deciding between the Tigers and the Magpies.
In a further update to the talks, he has now revealed that the Pies have “cooled off a bit” in Taranto “from a big money perspective”.
“According to a well-placed commercial source, they are now putting power, in particular, into bobby hill”, said Browne in Triple M.
The 22-year-old Hill sought a trade with Essendon at the end of last season but was limited to the final year of his contract with GWS.
He subsequently played the first 11 games of this year before retiring following a testicular cancer diagnosis and surgery.
The Bombers have not come into the conversation to take Hill to Victoria this offseason, with the forward apparently locked up in Collingwood.
That has left Taranto with more to think about in his move, with Browne reporting that the midfielder “is leaning towards Richmond now”.
The Tigers have holes to fill in their long-term midfield, with Dustin Martin battling injuries this year, Shane Edwards retiring after the Finals and Trent Cotchin turning 33 early next season.
So far, GWS has refused to give up on re-signing Taranto, who reportedly had offers in front of him to extend his time in Sydney.
The appointment of Adam Kingsley as the club’s head coach breathed new life into the Giants’ ability to contend for the Taranto signing, according to football chief Jason McCartney.
“Tim is out of contract, so he has to make a call. We would love to keep Tim,” he told SEN this week.
“Tim has been a wonderful player for our club for the last six years.
“He was the best and fairest winner in a great final year, so we would love to be able to keep Tim.
“Obviously the opportunity for him to speak with new coach Adam Kingsley in the next couple of days is going to be important.”
Jacob hopper and Tanner Bruhn are the other GWS midfielders who are reportedly set to leave the club, although the former is under contract for 2023.
Both have been linked to Geelong, but Bruhn, a former Falcons junior, may find a home at a Melbourne-based club.
McCartney said the Giants hope to convince Hopper he can stay and play “a really important role” in midfield next year.

Soldo is just a name we threw up on the basis of GWS probably need a better primary ruck than Preuss.
Game time will be something Soldo may want if we think this Miller / Nank / Balta combo has unlocked a new formula for us.
This is all just spitballing ideas here but you would have to think RCD, Aarts, Castagna, Soldo, Ross (if not signed) would all be wanting more opportunity elsewhere.
Maybe picks 18 and 19 for Taranto and their 2nd (21) That would be a win for us

If no one else is willing to pay over a second round pick maybe , but if we play the Adrian Dorledio game we may end up losing him to another side who will pay what he is worth which is a 1st round pick at least imo

I'd expect our first rounder to be in danger for this deal to get done. Depending where we finish it may not be enough. I'd be disappointed if we parted with 2 of our top 3 picks but that's maybe what it will take. It may depend on GWS value more, do they want more kids coming through? Or would they want a player who will play best 22 and not cost as much in salary cap, I'm thinking like a Soldo, RCD or a Castagna.
I'd expect a first rounder + our 2nd or one of those players.(hold onto Pick 19).

Tim Taranto is set to make a decision on his future by the end of next week.
Taranto is not a free agent but is a genuine chance to depart Greater Western Sydney after six seasons there since being taken with pick No.2 in the 2016 draft.
Foxfooty.com.au revealed in July that Taranto, 24, was being circled by Victorian clubs, with Richmond and Collingwood among the key suitors.
Foxfooty.com.au understands Taranto has now completed all due diligence and meetings with prospective clubs and is now weighing up his future.
Should Taranto opt to leave the Giants, Richmond looms as a likely target, which would bring with it a hint of irony as current Tigers assistant coach Adam Kinglsey will become GWS’ new senior coach at the conclusion of the season.
Taranto’s value ranges between the $650,000 to $700,000 a year mark.
The 26-year-old’s teammates in Jacob Hopper and Bobby Hill are also live chances to be playing elsewhere in 2023, with Hill highly likely to join Collingwood this trade period.

One thing about last night's loss is it confirms our picks 12, 19 and 30 going into the trade period.
Jon Ralph said post-game that other clubs have told him Taranto will be heading to Richmond as we are offering Taranto $700k p.a. and other clubs aren't willing to match or beat that figure.
So what do we offer up trade wise to get him? Our first pick?

GWS midfielder Tim Taranto is expected to request a trade to Richmond in the coming days, according to SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund.
As the Giants look to reset under new coach Adam Kingsley in 2023, several players are expected to depart as a result of salary cap pressures.
Edmund says that while GWS wants to keep the star on-baller, a more lucrative offer from Richmond will ultimately see him depart.
“My expectation is (Taranto) is going to be a put a trade request in to Richmond in the coming days,” he said on SEN’s Crunch Time.
“Now the Tigers are out of the finals race, my expectation is this is going to happen very soon.
“GWS wanted to keep him, they offered him a range of options. He was the one they wanted to keep.
“I think he’s a nice fit at the Tigers, Dion Prestia and Jack Graham’s injury left them really (depleted) in midfield.”
Taranto has been a mainstay in GWS’ side since being taken with pick two in the 2016 draft.
He played 16 games in 2022, averaging 25 disposals and four clearances.

Obviously GCS were banking on us finishing in a similar spot, not winning the flag, so ultimately our second pick you'd think would have been around pick 24 as well the following year. Surely surprised many people that we won it all.
So granted GCS were betting on us being average again IMO we traded pick 6 because 24 was thought to be about what our 2nd would be worth in 2017.

Clubs look set to pay top dollar for recruits this off-season as the market heats up for players seeking new homes.
According to the Herald Sun, one star that’s set for a payday at a new club is GWS’ Tim Taranto, with the midfielder set to request a trade to Richmond after being offered a deal worth $750,000 per season for seven years.
With Taranto’s deal set to become a benchmark, Kane Cornes questioned why that sort of money was offered as he doesn’t consider the 24-year-old in the “top echelon” of players at his position.
As other midfielders like Josh Dunkley and Tom Mitchell could also be on the move, Cornes pondered whether they’d now seek similar offers to Taranto’s.
“If you’re Josh Dunkley, you’re looking at what the other midfielders are getting,” Cornes said on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.
“He’s a better player than Tim Taranto, who’s got seven years at $750,000 (a season).
“That’s the sort of money you’ve got to pay to get a player out of their club, it’s going to cost them a lot.
“I wouldn’t be paying any midfielder that’s not Dustin Martin or the absolute top echelon $750,000 a year for seven years.”
Dunkley in particular has been linked to a move to Port Adelaide, with club great Cornes revealing that the Power are definitely “keen” on acquiring his services.
In reference to the 25-year-old, Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge says he “understands” if Dunkley sought a move if it meant he received a better financial opportunity.
“(Bulldogs List and Recruiting General Manager) Sam (Power) is talking to Josh's management and will continue to do that,” Beveridge said post the club’s Elimination Final loss to Fremantle.
“There are some unknowns. The free market as far as the player market gets heightened every year. The scope to move clubs, whether free agency or in contract is significant.
“We all have to manage our situation within the ceiling of the salary cap. We're desperate, we hope Josh is going to stay, but I can't tell you whether he is or whether he isn't.
“I can tell you absolutely that the relationships are really strong. If there is a reason to leave the club, it might be for opportunity and the short lifespan of an AFL footy, you have to make hay financially as much as you can, and we understand that.”
Like Taranto, Dunkley is now without a contract at his current club for 2023 and beyond.
The pair are not free agents and will need to request a trade to land at a rival club.

When you are in a street-fight with a dangerous foe it pays to strike at their most vulnerable areas.
For Greater Western Sydney, so desperate to keep their No. 2 overall pick in Tim Taranto, a monster offer from a rival club was always likely to pry him loose.
But for the Giants especially, the long-term nature of the seven-year deal Richmond has offered was always their version of getting a low blow that ends the fight.
GWS knows it is already saddled with a bunch of long-term deals to Josh Kelly (2029), Stephen Coniglio (2026) and Lachie Whitfield (2027) so could never risk that type of tenure, even for a player that loves the club.
So the Tigers will get their man and that deal, revealed by the Sunday Herald Sun, will also ward off Collingwood’s strong interest.
One of these days a seven-year deal will backfire spectacularly on a club, and it arguably already has given Collingwood is prepared to pay $300,000 of Brodie Grundy’s $1 million a year deal for the next five years.
But if some recency bias means Taranto has tumbled down the list of hot emerging mids, he should prove a spectacularly good addition to Richmond’s midfield.
This year everyone is wild about Josh Dunkley, who amassed 585 touches, 101 clearances and 18 goals in his brilliant season playing midfield and forward.
Taranto battled a grumbly back injury and concussion this year, but as recently as last season he amassed 637 possessions, kicked 13 goals, had 103 clearances and was awarded 15 Brownlow votes.
When played as a pure mid in 2019 he had 721 touches, averaged five clearances, still kicked 11 goals, was rated the Giants best grand final performer and won the best-and-fairest.
He has never been a great kick but playing as a mid forward this year he was elite for disposals, contested possessions and pressure and a surprising above average for inside-50 kicks.
The same critics who bashed Richmond for trading picks 6 for Dion Prestia and pick 24 (which was on-traded for dual premiership player Josh Caddy) have lined up to kick a seven-year deal.
It doesn’t make Richmond immune from future mistakes but look at their record.
The only players secured from other clubs on the entire list next year will be Tom Lynch, Toby Nankervis, Dion Prestia and Robbie Tarrant.
Carlton had 18 this year, Essendon and Geelong 10.
If they had drafted at pick six (it slid to pick 7) in the Prestia year their options were Jack Scrimshaw, Griffin Logue, Will Brodie and Jack Bowes.
The same year they used the Tyrone Vickery compo pick on a skinny kid called Shai Bolton.
They got Nankervis for pick 46, and he is now a triple premiership co-captain and only 28 years of age.
Lynch was a free agent who cost them millions but nothing from a trade perspective.
Richmond has always been fairly miserly with contract offers for its mid-tier players and if Lynch and Dustin Martin will be on seven figures next year surely Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin will play for much less than 2022.
If this is a monster mistake then at least it is targeted and done with a 24-year-old inside beast with flawless character.
Even the last years of the seven-year deal will be fulfilled with the collective bargaining agreement having risen twice that time.
At least the Tigers know exactly what they want.
At Melbourne they seem to be fixing their forward needs by trading for Brodie Grundy when it would push Max Gawn out of his preferred position and into a role where he has kicked two goals in eight games.
Taranto has the traits and qualities that will help fill in the gaps for Richmond to play exactly how they want to in the next five years.
He might not be flashy enough to win the Brownlow Medal, but if Shai Bolton does next year in a Richmond team that returns to the top four, Taranto’s acquisition might have helped make it possible.

Richmond must be counting their lucky stars that such a quality player nominated them for a trade. Despite missing six games due to injury this year, Taranto was still one of Greater Western Sydney’s best players in what was a pretty glum season for them. With Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin in the twilights of their careers, and Jack Graham potentially off to Port Adelaide, Taranto will provide a timely injection of class and skill to the Richmond midfield. He’s also a proven goalkicker when given the rare chance up forward, and ironically kicked his biggest bag of four against the Tigers late last year.

The Tigers are reportedly offering Taranto a much bigger and longer deal than what some of their other more established stars are on, which has the potential to cause some angst among the playing ranks, especially if the star Giant doesn’t fire fairly early into his Punt Road career. Richmond are also apparently prepared to part ways with two first-round picks to bring in Taranto, which is a risky move, but they see themselves as still inside the premiership window, so in order to stay there, clubs generally have to pay “overs” and prioritise the short-term future over the long-term.

A deal to send Giants midfielder Tim Taranto to Richmond has been agreed in principle and is poised to be one of the first trades done when the trade period opens on Monday.
A source with knowledge of the discussions said the Giants and Richmond met in Sydney on Friday and agreed a deal after the out-of-contract Taranto had requested a trade to the Tigers.
Central to the deal will be Richmond parting with picks 12 and 19 in the exchange, which could include the movement of other later picks.
Richmond and the Giants agreed to separate the two deals for Taranto and Jacob Hopper, who has also requested a trade to Richmond. As Taranto is out of contract and Hopper contracted, it was considered easier and cleaner to separate the deals.
The likely sum of the deals to move both players to the Tigers will be that Richmond give up 12, 19 and 30 in this year’s draft and their first-round pick next year, which is popularly considered to be a stronger draft than this year. There will probably be some movement of other, later picks involved in the final deals and potentially a Richmond player moving to the Giants.
GWS have long been interested in another ruckman and have inquired about Ivan Soldo, among other players.
In other likely early movement, Giants small forward Bobby Hill will move to Collingwood in a trade of their future second-round pick, with another pick coming back to Collingwood this year.
The Magpies appear likely to secure Brayden Fiorini from Gold Coast for basically nothing in draft terms as the Suns try to get Fiorini’s $600,000 contract for next year off their books. Collingwood will spread that contract out across a multi-year deal for the wingman, who was pick 20 in the 2015 draft.
The Lions will offer the Bulldogs their future first-round pick to try to secure Josh Dunkley. Gold Coast will discuss a trade with St Kilda for Ben Long as well as tying to secure a deal with Brisbane for forward Tom Berry to move to the Suns for a third- or fourth-round pick.
Hawthorn, Geelong, Essendon and North Melbourne are all trying to lure Gold Coast’s Jack Bowes and get in on the salary dump from the Suns, who are prepared to offer pick seven in the draft with Bowes as an incentive for a club to take over the player’s full contract, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Bowes’ heavily back-ended contract has him tied to the Suns for two more years on about $800,000 a year.
The former academy product, who was taken at pick 10 in the 2016 draft, would also have his money spread across multiple years elsewhere. Clubs would effectively be able to buy pick seven by agreeing to take on the full contract, as well as getting a talented player who has struggled for opportunities in the Suns midfield.
Toby Bedford has told Melbourne he wants to be traded to GWS for more playing opportunities.
The Demons have already begun negotiations with Fremantle over Luke Jackson but are waiting to see what picks Fremantle secures from the players poised to leave the Dockers in other deals before finalising any trade. Blake Acres, Griffin Logue and Rory Lobb have all asked for trades away from Fremantle. Acres wants to move to Carlton, Logue to North and Lobb to the Bulldogs.
Gold Coast and Adelaide will meet over a deal for Izaak Rankine, which is likely to centre on Adelaide’s first-round pick – currently five – and some other later picks.
Melbourne and Collingwood will wait until the Jackson deal is done before negotiating a trade for Brodie Grundy to the Demons.

Giving up 12 and 19 would seem to make the hopper deal hard if they really are keeping them seperate. I really doubt they’d be discussing them separately, need to know what they expect for each player so both can get done with what we have.

Effectively, Taranto in for pick 12 and Coleman-Jones. Not a bad deal when you put it that way.
However, in terms of draft points, 12 + 19 is equivalent to around pick 3. Which is a bit high. Would've thought pick 6 or 7 is closer to the mark as it's similar to what we paid for Prestia. So, as that Age article says, we probably get something back our way.
Pick 12 (1268 pts) + Pick 19 (948 pts) = 2216 pts .... ~= pick 3 (2234 pts).
GWS have picks 21 (912 pts), 40 (429 pts), 58 (170 pts), 60 (146 pts) plus of course future picks.
If GWS give us pick 40 then it's:
2216 - 429 = 1787 pts which is just above pick 6 (1751 pts).
If GWS give us picks 40 + 60 then it's:
2216 - 429 - 146 = 1641 pts when is equivalent to pick 7 (1644 pts).
That would leave our Future 1st + pick 30 or Future 1st + Soldo for Hopper. Equivalent to giving up a pick in the range 5-7.

The more I think about it, the more I like that deal for Taranto. So many first round picks don’t work out. He’s a proven gun mid. Picks 12 and 19 will also be pushed back a bit once bids come in.

I actually agree TK, they aren't the same, but clubs do use draft points to determine a trade's worth when it isn't just a simple one pick for one player swap. Hopefully, the talk of us getting a 3rd rounder back is true. That, as I posted, would equate in terms of draft points to trading pick 6.

Being out of contract doesn’t mean much these days. I suspect if we couldn’t get GWS to agree to a deal Taranto would re-sign with GWS or he’d go to the pre-season draft where he’d be at risk of being picked up by someone else.
12 + 19 is the exact worth of Taranto in my opinion. The chance of getting someone better and ready to contribute to the same degree as Taranto can both now and into the future is very low.

The Giants' 2nd rounder is pick 21 which is too close to our pick 19. Great for us if that was so but can't see GWS accepting a trade which is effectively Taranto for just pick 12.
Their 3rd rounder is pick 40.
Even if future picks were considered, GWS are likely to finish bottom 4 again next year. So, that doesn't change the equation either.

Richmond is delighted to welcome former GWS midfielder, Tim Taranto to the Swinburne Centre.
The Tigers completed the trade with the GIANTS today, exchanging selection No. 12 and No. 19 overall at this year’s draft for the midfielder.
Taranto has committed to Richmond for seven years, tying him to the Club until the end of the 2029 season.
The 24-year-old has made an outstanding start to his AFL career since being selected by GWS with the second pick overall at the 2016 AFL National Draft.
A big-bodied midfielder (188cm, 89kg) that can also play as a damaging half-forward, Taranto has averaged 23 disposals and booted 48 goals across 114 matches at GWS.
Taranto was awarded the Kevin Sheedy Medal as the Giants’ best and fairest during the Club’s breakthrough Grand Final campaign in 2019. The third-year player at the time was also the Giants’ standout in the Grand Final, gathering 30 disposals.
An excellent runner with strong aerial ability, hardness, and football nous, the competitive Taranto will offer coach Damien Hardwick’s system another first-class player across various roles.
Richmond General Manager- Football Talent Blair Hartley said securing Taranto’s signature was exciting news for the Club.
“Tim is a player we admire because of his obvious on-field ability and also his work rate, high standards and leadership traits,” he said.
“At only 24 years of age, Tim has a lot of very good football ahead of him, and we are delighted that he will have the opportunity to do that in Yellow and Black.
“We think Tim will be a very popular player among his new teammates, coaches, staff, and of course, our supporter base.”

Richmond have put themselves back in the “premiership window” by luring Giant Tim Taranto to the club, with the midfielder even named a potential future skipper.
The Tigers gave up picks 12 and 19 for Taranto on Monday, after he played 114 games in six seasons at GWS arriving as pick 2 in 2016.
And it’s his arrival that is set to free up Tigers stars Shai Bolton and Dustin Martin, with Fox Footy’s Jon Ralph even claiming Taranto’s influence could allow Martin to win another Brownlow Medal.
“We know what he’s not – he’s not a great kick. Not an elite kick,” Ralph said on Fox Footy’s Trading Day.
“(But) he could be a future captain and he will run all day. He will allow the defensive midfield component that will allow Dusty Martin and Shai Bolton to just go hunting for the football.
“He might not win the best and fairest next year, but he might allow Shai Bolton or Dusty to win another Brownlow.
“He just compliments everything they want to do in the next five or six years.”
Dermott Brereton agreed Taranto wasn’t the most elite kick, but said he was a necessary recruitment as the Tigers battle an ageing midfield.
“It makes sense for the Tigers – the team they want to roll through the midfield. They’ve got your wingers – McIntosh (28) and Pickett (30). Prestia’s 29 with a banged up body on occasion, Dusty’s 31, Cotchin 32. They’ve only got Shai Bolton and Jack Graham at 24 and 25 (next season) so they need this age bracket of Taranto at 24,” he said.
“They are desperate to fill that age bracket in that area.
“He’s your Dion Prestia – a bigger body, not quite as good a kick. But he’s going to be filling that role in seasons to come.”
Fox Footy’s Leigh Montagna described Taranto as a “great get” for Richmond, given he was ranked elite in pressure, contested ball and disposals in 2022.
“It’s probably slightly overs but think it’s fair,” Montagna said.
“(He’s an) All-Australian calibre player at his best.
“I think (Taranto’s arrival) allows Dustin to almost become a permanent forward as he gets older.
“He can almost play inside 50, Shai Bolton now plays that role that’s mixed-forward. I think absolutely they’re in a premiership window again.”

Where will Taranto play?
At GWS, Taranto played a prolific role in their midfield, which is the commonly expected role will uptake with the Tigers. He brings a new dynamic to the Richmond engine room, a section of the ground where the Tigers have a notable weakness compared to the rest of the competition.
The GWS recruit will slot nicely into the Richmond midfield, offering a new style of play that will look to bolster the Tigers back into the top four and potentially while their premiership window is still existent but fading, push for one last flag.

There is no doubting that Tim Taranto is a hard-bodied, in-and-under on-baller getting those much-needed contested possessions. Richmond as a team this past season ranked 11th in this stat indicating that Taranto adds great value for the Tigers.
Taranto averaged 9.7 contested possessions in 2022 which ranks him third in the existing Tigers midfield, only behind Dion Prestia and Trent Cotchin.
The 24-year-old also has the ability for drifting forward and impacting the scoreboard when his team needs it most. This past season, the Tigers recruit averaged over 25 disposals this season and kicked on average every two games.

I'd have traded CCJ and 1st rounder for Taranto, the fact they are Pick 12 and 19 make it seem less in our favour but we get the player we need. That is the main thing.

Maybe they didn't turn that pick 20 into James Hird, but to draft a player valued highly enough to secure pick 19 a few years later is hardly getting it wrong. That's a retention problem, not a drafting problem.

Tim Taranto may be the most fortunate player in the AFL.
For a variety of reasons, mostly through no fault of his own, his career has stagnated after his 2019 best-and-fairest win at just 21 years of age.
Since that point, he never quite recaptured that form the hyped him all the way up to the second pick in the 2016 draft and had him high in the Giants’ estimations in the formative stages of his career.
There were always murmurings that Taranto may return to Victoria at some stage in his career but for all intents and purposes, he was happy at GWS and it was the club who felt he was most expendable as they enter a new chapter.
Certainly the way the 24-year-old has been used recently would indicate that they were happy to field offers.
Richmond answered the call and in doing so, have created the most beneficial scenario we’ll see in the 2022 trade period for all parties.
Taranto is exactly what the Tigers needed to solidify their return to relevance, with a sustained finals run targeted for the next number of seasons.
They’ve recruited a player who has been played out of position for two seasons, but one with a lot of potential.
We only need look at that best-and-fairest-winning season in a Grand Final team to see what he brings to the table – Taranto averaged 27.7 disposals, 6.3 tackles, 5.2 clearances and 4.6 marks per game.
Those basic numbers are nice, but it’s the pressure that the midfielder can bring to the table that really excites the Richmond fan base.
In 2019, he averaged 25.1 pressure acts per game, which included 12.7 in the defensive half. That ranked him seventh and third respectively out of all midfielders in the AFL and it’s that commitment to the team structure that really enticed the Tigers.
Even in 2022 in a different role, Taranto ranked 12th for defensive half pressure acts and was rated elite all-round in the overall metric.
Yet much of what Taranto is going to bring to Richmond is hypothetical for now, rather than a concrete reality.
Given we’ve mentioned recent seasons, it’s important to note that right now, Taranto is a solid midfielder who has limitations that never really meshed in GWS’ system, despite some individual success experienced.
How much credit you want to give the former Giants’ coach will depend on whether you believe that the 24-year-old’s position as a forward and outside midfielder over the last two seasons was for development or because he’d been written off as a player, but neither gave Taranto an opportunity to succeed strongly.
If you were to redraft the 2016 crop of players right now, it’s highly unlikely Taranto would be taken second and there’s a chance he’d even slide outside the top five.
Between 2018 and 2021, Taranto was rated as a below average kick. Just how bad was it? Well, in 2021 he spent more time in attack and his kicking efficiency was 50.5 per cent, clearly his highest over that period of time.
Absolutely, inside midfielders tend to be given a little more leeway given how congested stoppages tend to be and extraction is less of an art form and more a showing of brute force, but to consistently hit the target with less than half of his kicks was a big issue for Taranto at GWS.
It’s even worse if you consider that technically, the Giants weren’t really using him as an inside midfielder. In 2019, he had a kicking efficiency of 48.4 per cent, despite collecting 59.4 per cent of his possessions in an uncontested manner. It certainly passed the eye test.
Jacob Hopper, Richmond’s other target, is as pure as it gets for an inside midfielder and has always been GWS’ preferred option in that regard.
The other of Taranto’s limitations which came to light and was particularly restrictive is that his forward craft just hasn’t been developed enough by the Giants, and his use in that role felt more of a spontaneous move rather than anything planned.
Given his prolificity offensively as a junior, it seemed like Leon Cameron just hoped it would click.
It doesn’t quite work like that. His accuracy in front of goal in the last five seasons is below 40 per cent too, not fantastic.
All of this is to provide context behind the fact that really, Taranto isn’t the A-grade midfielder Richmond supporters are celebrating. Right now, that is.
The reality of the situation is that we haven’t really seen the best of what the seventh-year player has to offer.
It’s why for all three parties, this is such a perfect move overall.
GWS secured picks 12 and 19, before father/son selections and compensation picks are handed out. It’s seemingly a step backwards to be collecting a bunch of picks, but a refresh is clearly needed and with a new coach at the helm, it’s as good a package as they could’ve hoped for.
Let’s not forget that the Giants aren’t losing a key midfield mover from their perspective – where it was due to injury or simply falling out of love, Taranto had fallen behind the likes of Tom Green, Stephen Coniglio, Harry Perryman, Hopper and even Callan Ward for centre bounce attendances.
In a nice draft with great depth, these are significant assets to receive.
Of course on the flip side, there’ll be some division in the Richmond fan base about giving up two top-20 picks in a deal that hasn’t involved Hopper as well.
To receive a player taken so highly in the draft with a strong enough resume to suggest stagnation, rather than regression has occurred, assets had to have been given up.
Plus, as lucrative as draft picks can be, they’re speculative, which rings true the further down the draft board you go.
Also, to counter any criticism of Richmond trading away their future in this and any prospective deal for Hopper, let us not forget the Tigers’ intelligent trading that resulted in five top-30 selections in 2021, three of whom played senior footy already.
While the Giants don’t feel like they’ve lost a significant piece, Richmond has gained their big midfield piece of the future, which really ties into the third and most important party that has benefitted greatly, the player himself.
The Tigers have given Taranto a long-term contract on good money to be their main guy.
For the first time in his career, we’ll see him playing 80 per cent midfield with only shorter spurts up forward, where as a rotational piece as the fourth or fifth target, there’s more opportunity for him to do damage.
Taranto’s kicking issues may have been detrimental to his career at GWS, but are entirely irrelevant in a Richmond team that only wants to take space. There’s no reliance on hitting up targets accurately. It’s a swarm mentality where the midfielders simply need to get the ball forward.
Damien Hardwick finally has a taller midfielder that can do some grunt work, while the small likes of Dion Prestia, Shai Bolton, Tyler Sonsie and Liam Baker can do as they please. Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin are peripheral members of the midfield group now.
And finally, the defensive commitment Taranto has shown in his career only furthers the value he brings to a team that is built on pressure and suffocation of the opposition.
Targeting Hopper is to add cream on top of the Tigers’ midfield, a true contested beast that will protect the 24-year-old and his new teammates.
After a few years just floating around the Giants’ team, Taranto has landed at the most perfect destination for the type of player he is.
At draft time, there was speculation that he could become one of the game’s best midfielders.
At the end of the 2022 season at GWS, it looked like his potential had been capped against his own will.
He will now spend the majority of his career as a prime midfield mover at the Richmond Football Club, who will give him every chance to realise his full potential.
Expect big thing out of a player who hasn’t even entered his prime, at a club looking for more success going forward.
Tim Taranto at the Tigers is the perfect landing spot for both parties and the rewards will be enormous.

And, by the end of the season, it was almost a certainty. I was just grateful that Richmond had their interest in me. It was an easy decision, to be honest, in the end. They were really good. Tim Taranto was recruited by Richmond this trade period with the Tigers addressing a need (or two) in their midfield.
The midfielder will make his way to Punt Road alongside his former GWS teammate Jacob Hopper after his new club raided the Giants’ on-ball brigade.
After six years in the orange and charcoal, Taranto will don the black and yellow where he will step into a midfield unit led by the likes of Dion Prestia, Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin and Shai Bolton.
It is the first name in that group that really stands out when assessing Taranto’s career to date.
Just like Taranto, Prestia was recruited from an expansion club after spending six years with that team.
The similarities don’t end there.

He has played in three premierships for the Tigers, winning a best and fairest in a premiership season in 2019. (Coincidentally, it was the same season as Taranto won the B&F for the Giants in the same year the pair faced off in the Grand Final).
Prestia is seen by many as Richmond’s most important player overall, let alone most important midfielder.
While it’s hard to compare two different humans, there is no denying that the numbers posted by Taranto in his first six seasons in the AFL are uncannily similar to those of Prestia.
Hopefully, for Tigers fans, the former Giant has a similar impact.

On top of kmac I generally see guys like broad, short and Prestia listed at the top of the Telstra tracker stat thing that channel 7 put up during games. A bit different because this is a time trial so combines endurance with speed where as the tracker is just about distance covered.

B Ellis. Lambert, McIntosh was our top 3 for years in that order. Once Ellis left it was then Lambert and McIntosh.
Poor KMac must have thought he was a chance with Lamberts's retirement only to cop Taranto now.

Yep, Scully during Dec 2018 preseason. Taranto was almost 21 y.o. back then.
The Giants returned from the New Year’s break with a time trial — and, big surprise, it was Tom Scully who claimed honours in the 3km.
Giants’ swingman Adam Tomlinson finished second, while midfielder Lachie Whitfield finished third.
Tim Taranto and Giants veteran Matt De Boer rounded out the top five for the run, which was held at the WestConnex Centre.

STAR RECRUIT’S PRE-SEASON LABELLED “PRETTY SPECIAL” AS TIGERS LOOK TO CONTEND IN 2023

Tim Taranto is enjoying a faultless start to life at Richmond this pre-season.
After joining the club in the trade period, the former Giant has not missed a beat by winning a pair of time trial runs before and after the Christmas break.
Following a 2021 campaign that saw him claim 15 Brownlow votes, Taranto’s last season with GWS was a step back as he saw his numbers dip across the board as injuries kept him to just 16 games.
Determined to return to his best, AFL Media’s Josh Gabelich described Taranto’s early impact at Punt Road as “pretty special” as he looks to hit the ground running in yellow and black.
“You can’t forget that he had a lot of issues with his body last year,” Gabelich said on SEN Breakfast.
“He had a pretty disappointing year in terms of his output, he had a back injury that just sort of plagued him.
“All of the unknown of whether he was going to stay or whether he was going to go (weighed on him), obviously he went in the end.
“To win both time trials on either side of Christmas is a really strong start - he was one of the best runners at Greater Western Sydney.
“He dethroned Kamdyn McIntosh before Christmas (in the time trial) … he held off Hugo Ralphsmith (in the second run) who actually was really impressive as well, he held him off by less than a second.
“I think Tim Taranto has had a pretty special start to life at Richmond, it is only early days, but it’s a really strong start after a pretty tough 2022.”
David King is another who is excited about what Taranto – and fellow former Giant Jacob Hopper – can do for Richmond after joining the club in the off-season.
King believes their recruitment extends the Tigers’ premiership window as he tipped the midfield pair to complement the current Richmond group perfectly.
“100 per cent they are (back in premiership contention),” King said on SEN Afternoons.
“Look at what they were able to get in the off-season, the talent that walked through the door there are just going to hit the ground running.
“Taranto, we know a lot about him, he’s that centre-forward player that Damien Hardwick loves.
“Hopper is just that clearance winner, it’s been (Dion) Prestia or bust as a clearance player for Richmond and he’s been heavily affected the last few years with injury.
“To get Hopper in who is just 25 years of age is an absolute boom (pick up), Taranto is the same – he’s actually younger than Hopper.
“They’ve got two guys in their prime that are going to be there for a long period of time.”
Taranto and Hopper will aim to make their Richmond debuts when the Tigers face Carlton in their traditional Round 1 matchup on Thursday, March 16 at the MCG.

Taranto is the second most selected forward who has left a club seeking more midfield opportunities. He has been training the house down, winning time trails and becoming acquainted with his new midfield partners in Trent Cotchin and Dion Prestia. Taranto does have averages of 108 and 113 next to his name but as we know, Richmond's game style hasn't always delivered big Fantasy scores with not one midfielder averaging over 100 in the last three seasons.
Verdict: If our predictions are correct, Taranto will fight it out with Connor Rozee and Stephen Coniglio to be second-best forward this year. He will improve on his average of 96 but the big question is … by how much?

Richmond’s familiar faces aside, there was plenty to love from off-season recruit Tim Taranto.
Taranto, who arrived from the GWS Giants, scored two goals and was unlucky not to have had more as he put in an outstanding shift.
Blackburn was excited at what she saw from Taranto and tipped him for a big season.
“I think Taranto has been a really great addition to this outfit and the class and different looks that he’s providing has been really exciting for the Tigers,” Western Bulldogs AFLW star Ellie Blackburn said.
“We’ve said it numerous times and we’ll probably keep saying it throughout the rest of this game but he has been outstanding and what he’s been able to provide is great excitement for the Tigers around the midfield.”

I think that was ridiculous myself.
He's always been fine by foot. Has played plenty of inside footy where clearances are a priority but was lately played out of position which probably impacted his performance, sort of like how we play everyone out of position at some stage.

David King is excited about what Richmond recruit Tim Taranto can bring to the Tigers in 2023.
After six seasons and 114 games with GWS, Taranto joined Richmond for picks No. 12 and 19 in the National Draft over the trade period.
Signing a seven-year deal with the Tigers, Richmond expects Taranto to be a mainstay in their midfield for much of the next decade and King believes he could soon be the face of the club.
Having already won a best and fairest with the Giants, King believes the 25-year-old can go to the next level and has him poised to be a top five player in the AFL this season.
“I think Richmond are the real wildcard for me,” King said on SEN Mornings.
“I see Tim Taranto come into that line-up, I think he’ll be a top five player in the competition this year.
“Whether he’s kicking goals or bursting from the middle, he’s another one of those players that don’t quite get the wraps they deserve for what they’ve been at the Giants.
“He comes to a big power (fan) base now, he’ll be the face of Richmond halfway through the year.
“I know they’ve got Dustin Martin, Tom Lynch, Jack Riewoldt and all these guys, but this guy will fast become their midfield.”

Big inside mids especially in Hoppers case are not drafted for their outside skills.
On Taranto yes right thru his career the only knock on his game has been kicking. Not that it was terrible or anything.
Look at Cotch the biggest knock on his game has been kicking or hurt factor by foot. But sheesh so hes not an elite kick but you take every day of the week what he brings in spades and its the same for Taranto.

Saturday will mark seven years to the day since what was perhaps Brodie Grundy’s most iconic moment as a Collingwood player.
Trailing by 17 points more than 23 minutes into the final quarter of a round two game against Richmond, the Pies came from the clouds to pinch a one-point victory, with Grundy’s hurried goalmouth hack in heavy traffic putting his side ahead with 10 seconds remaining.
Among the subplots from that Friday night encounter were the exchanges between Adam Treloar, playing just his second game in black and white, and then Tigers captain Trent Cotchin.
Treloar had been pursued by both Collingwood and Richmond at the end of the previous season after he decided to return to Victoria following four seasons at Greater Western Sydney, where he had been runner-up in the club’s 2015 best and fairest.
The explosive midfielder said at the time that his choice to choose the Pies over the Tigers had been made because he thought Collingwood had a “better list” than Richmond.
It made for a compelling narrative heading into that early-season game in 2016, and Cotchin was all too keen to remind Treloar of his comments when the Tigers headed to what looked like a matchwinning lead late in the game, only to come unstuck when Collingwood surged.
As it turned out, 2016 was not a great season for either of the traditional Victorian heavyweights. Both clubs missed the eight. Richmond, having stumbled after three straight finals series from 2013 to 2015, was under siege at every level, with an attempted board coup accompanying a brutal football department review.
The Pies fared marginally better but could still only manage 12th spot, meaning respective coaches Damien Hardwick and Nathan Buckley entered 2017 under immense pressure.
Ultimately there was success ahead for both clubs. Buckley hung onto his job despite another year out of the finals before leading his side into a grand final in 2018 and preliminary final the following year, both of which were lost narrowly. Treloar could barely have been closer to becoming a Magpies premiership player.
But it was Richmond who had the last laugh. It is a parallel universe, but Treloar could conceivably have become part of the Tiger triple-premiership dynasty had he chosen to head to Punt Road rather than across the other side of Swan St.
All that brings us to Tim Taranto, who on Friday night plays against Collingwood in his third match for the Tigers. Taranto, like Treloar six years earlier, was in 2022 a talented and ready-made Victorian Giants midfielder weighing up interest from both Richmond and Collingwood as he came to the end of his contract at GWS.
There is a suspicion at rival clubs that Taranto was leaning towards the Tigers for much of 2022, however the Magpies were repeatedly linked with the onballer, who had been shunted to half-forward at times with the Giants. Ironically, Collingwood was only in a position to be able to even consider a play for Taranto after cleaning up its salary cap situation, by off-loading players including Treloar, and eventually Grundy too.
In any case, Taranto – alongside fellow GWS departee Jacob Hopper – signed respective seven-year deals with the Tigers. Not exactly taking a short-term view of things.
Hopper was also linked to Collingwood, while Geelong was also a major suitor before the Tigers blew the others out of the water with the length of their offer.
While both the Tigers and Pies made the finals last year, both were heavy reliant on scoring from turnover and relatively weak when it came to clearances. Taranto and Hopper therefore addressed a clear area of need. Having missed out on Taranto, Collingwood instead zeroed in on contracted Hawks midfielder Tom Mitchell, who had himself been linked to the Tigers a year earlier.
Taranto kept a relatively low profile after joining Richmond, and has not publicly discussed why he specifically preferred the Tigers to the Pies. But speaking on the Tommy Talks podcast with former teammate Tom Sheridan, Taranto said Richmond’s belief that it can defy the AFL’s equalisation forces was a compelling reason for his call.
“The list is looking really good. What kind of sold it to me is we reckon we can be successful for a long stint, kind of like Geelong’s been. I guess we’re kind of modelling it off that,” Taranto said.
Balancing the long-term and the short-term is an eternal juggle, and few clubs this century have managed to consistently contend for a premiership. The Cats are an outlier.
While the Pies have sold a message of regeneration under Craig McRae, they are not a particularly young side, and neither are the Tigers. Both teams last week fielded sides with an average age of more than 27. Only Geelong was older in round two.
Trying to project what these sides might look like come the end of 2029 is therefore almost impossible. Consider that from the 2016 game, only Taylor Adams, Jack Crisp, Jordan de Goey, Darcy Moore and Scott Pendlebury are still at the Pies, while Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Kamdyn McIntosh, Jayden Short, Jack Riewoldt and Nick Vlastuin are the survivors for the Tigers.
In Nick Daicos, Collingwood has an emerging superstar, probably the league’s most bankable talent for the next decade and maybe then some. Brother Josh has been a slower burn but has developed into one of the AFL’s best wingmen and is still only 24.
On the flip side Richmond has Shai Bolton, an All-Australian last year and also just 24.
But with Collingwood still getting meaningful contributions from Pendlebury and Steele Sidebottom, as well as fellow 30+ year-olds in the injured Jeremy Howe, Jamie Elliott and Brody Mihocek, there is no guarantee that progress will be linear for the Magpies.
Likewise, the Tigers are still dependent for goals on Riewoldt, 34, and Tom Lynch, 30, while Dylan Grimes and Martin are both 31. And as impressive as Maurice Rioli jnr has been, the Tigers do not have a Nick Daicos-like player under 21. To be fair, no other club probably does.
Lynch could steamroll the Pies’ depleted back line on Friday night. Or Pendlebury’s incisive kicking could cut through Richmond’s pressure game. In any case, judging Taranto’s wisdom on the outcome of this match would be unwise. As Treloar and Grundy show, seven years is a bloody long time in footy.

It’s starting to look that way. But what about Geelong that seem to bring players in and have been consistently competitive.
Our second quarter showed the best of what we have but unfortunately that level of excellence can’t be sustained for more than 15 minutes.
Taranto is a pressure beast and works very hard in the guts.
The biggest disappointment for me is that he hasn’t been more damaging around goals. Although it was good to see him finally kick one hopefully the monkey is off the back and he can snag more goals in the future.
I don’t think we have found the right balance in the midfield as yet.

Kanes headhunting of Taranto is actually quite sad to see. Does he think it’s appropriate to constantly go at one player like this ? Especially with the awareness of mental health these days? Not only that but also just the fact that it’s blown way out of proportion. Taranto has been excellent, his kicking will improve and then what will you knock him for ? He was brought into the team to get the hard balls and get out to our more polished players. There’s obviously been some disconnect but you can’t faulted his effort and his general play so far this season, he’s literally elite in most categories

I keep going back and forth about this. Maybe it’s because dusty is such a good kick I just assume everyone should be able to execute to his level? Maybe that’s not fair but I suppose after 3 premierships you get spoiled and you assume every kick is going to hit someone lace out

Personally would like to see him handball more. He's one touch player. Kicking isn't his 1 wood. I'd prefer to see him handballing to a Short running off the back square and get Short to kick inside 50. That's where he'd hurt the most. Again our problems to address are elsewhere. You will always need to have top end talent to get hands on the footy.

Geelong assistant coach Josh Jenkins has come out in defence of Tigers prized recruit Tim Taranto.
Taranto has been the subject of some criticism after the Tigers poor start to the year with his disposal efficiency particularly under the microscope.
However, Jenkins believes that the former Giant has had a big impact at Richmond already and was arguably best on ground in the Tigers' 18-point loss to Melbourne on Monday night.
“I won’t be copping any grief about the way Tim Taranto played the game last night,” Jenkins told SEN Breakfast.
“Sometimes in footy a narrative can build and we don’t even watch what is in front of us. We just go ‘nup, can’t kick’.
“That couldn’t be further from the truth. Did he slice the game open with his foot skills? No. He didn't cut the game open like Dustin Martin can by foot or Marcus Bontempelli can by foot, but was his kicking poor? No.
“He is the least of their (Richmond's) worries. I thought he was probably the best player on the ground and I know in the end Melbourne have won the game running away from them, but 33 disposals and 10 score involvements (for Taranto), so not just getting the footy and hacking it.
“People are getting the ball after he’s had it and scoring. 10 tackles, six clearances, six inside 50s, I thought he was Richmond’s best easily and probably the best player on the ground because Melbourne had so many even contributors.”
Taranto was sent to the Tigers at the end of last season with teammate Jacob Hopper in trades that involved the Tigers sending two first-round picks, a second-round pick and a future first-round pick to GWS for the two midfielders.
Taranto's kicking efficiency of 44.8 per cent this year has been questioned by Champion Data and Kane Cornes, but the 25-year-old has still been impactful for the Tigers as he averages 6.5 score involvements and 5.8 clearances per game.
Jenkins believes that the reason for Taranto’s low disposal efficiency is due to his contested nature.
“He’s never going to have 97 per cent disposal efficiency,” Jenkins said.
“He almost never gets to kick the ball without someone pressuring him or physically touching him.
“He’s not one of these high defenders or rebounding defenders who get to kick and mark and chip it around and have 90 per cent disposal efficiency, he’s not that type of player.”

RICHMOND midfielder Tim Taranto has had to adjust to some extra attention since arriving at the Tigers.
Taranto has been a strong performer but Richmond has made a slow start to the season, winning just one of its opening six games ahead of Sunday's clash against Gold Coast.
The midfielder arrived from the Giants during the Trade Period and said he had to adjust to the additional attention and pressure.
"It has been a bit of an adjustment coming back to Melbourne and to a big footy club like Richmond," Taranto told RSN on Thursday.
"But I guess I was expecting it and knew that if we were winning we'd be portrayed as heroes, but if we were losing we might be portrayed as villains. I guess just riding that wave and not trying to let it get too close to our heads.
"I know everyone says it's but you've just got to focus on what 'Dimma' (coach Damien Hardwick) is saying and what the coaches are saying and try and block out all that noise out. It's a bit of an adjustment."

Kane Cornes has questioned Richmond’s decision to trade a glut of picks for both Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper last off-season.
Richmond sent out picks 12 and 19 in last year’s draft for Taranto and pick 31 in last year’s draft and a future-first round pick, which currently sits at pick three, for Hopper, while getting pick 53 and 63 in return.
While the Tigers are expected to rise up the ladder somewhat making this year’s pick less valuable than pick three, Cornes believes the move was the wrong one for Richmond to make as they sit 1-5-1 through seven rounds in 2023.
Cornes believes Hopper doesn’t influence games and suggested Taranto isn’t a top 150 player in the AFL despite him averaging 31 disposals and six clearances a game.
He discussed Richmond’s trade moves with SEN Breakfast co-host David King.
Cornes: “I don't think you want to be trading out top 10 picks right now for Jacob Hopper.
“Who is he? What's he doing at the moment, Jacob Hopper?
“Like how many times does he get coaches votes?
“How many times does he influence games?”
King: “You said this about Taranto four weeks ago.”

King: “Yeah, I would, because you get stability for seven years and they're going to be high quality players.”
Cornes: “Alright, well I wouldn't, but we can disagree on that.”
Hopper is currently averaging 24 disposals and four clearances a game for his new club.

Cornes is doing his job as a sports commentator.
He provides opinion and from what I’ve heard, owns it when he’s called out for an error. I don’t think he takes himself that seriously.
The nature of his job is to provide opinions and sports commentary and he clearly does this in a provocative way to the biggest supporter bases in order to gain maximum attention and listeners.
KB used to do this with theCheat supporters all the time and it was hilarious.

Cornes had the chance to respond on Nine's Sunday Footy Show.
"I've never said anything for the sake of it, I've never said anything to get a click," Cornes said.
"I don't get paid per click, I couldn't care less if you click on it or not.
"I was a little bit surprised because I spoke to him yesterday (Saturday) morning and we had that discussion. He rang me. I was surprised after the game he went public with that. But we had a good discussion.
"I said to him it was part of an extended chat on a radio show on a Friday morning that would have lasted five minutes. If you go and read the one headline which he would have done, and not listened to the whole conversation in its full context, then yes you could say that was said for clicks.
"One of his great strengths is his loyalty and support for his players, which we've seen for a number of years, and I admire that about him.

I’ve heard some nonsense in my time but this has gone straight to number 1.’’ The highly respected Tony Shaw added on 3AW: “If you want to go out there on a limb and you want to be controversial, make sure that you do homework.’’ And Dale Thomas didn’t miss either. “That is a headline for clicks,’’ he said on Triple M. Cornes would relish the commentary, and won’t be offended by the feedback, but not sure the AFL would be pleased with the shenanigans. In that time his competition ranking for disposals is fifth, he’s sixth for contested possessions and top 15 for clearance and score involvements. His average SuperCoach points in that period is 130, which places him third in the competition.

While the back and forth pantomime over the worth of Tim Taranto raged over the weekend, it seemed to degenerate into another referendum on outspoken commentator Kane Cornes rather than what it probably should have been.
That is: should we rate players on the amount of times they get the ball or by what they do with the ball; and more cerebrally, whether we unfairly skew importance or quality of performance with who gets the ball most often.
Champion Data’s numbers allow us to sort fact from fiction in the Taranto case, but also illuminate what good and bad ball usage looks like across the league.
Taranto tallies
With ageing stars in their midfield, Richmond effectively handed the keys to its engine room to Taranto and fellow former Giant Jacob Hopper for the foreseeable future.
On top of a handsome contract, it also meant a permanent midfield role for Taranto, who had previously played a hybrid mid-forward role at the Giants. The shift has resulted in a raft of career-highs.
Thus far in 2023, he’s on pace to record his best average numbers for disposals, contested possessions, clearances, score involvements and tackles.
Across the AFL, he’s ranked sixth for disposals and fifth for tackles; as such, Champion Data rates him elite in these categories. In that respect, he’s doing exactly what the Tigers required, replacing their grunt in the middle as Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin phase into other roles.

But there’s another statistic that is the root cause of this debate: a kicking efficiency of just 46.2 per cent. The more you get the ball, the more that can be highlighted.
Untidy Tim
To put it bluntly, Taranto’s kicking is dragging down the rest of his game.
The AFL Player Ratings system tries to provide some sort of equality across positions beyond raw disposals. Taranto playing in the midfield will always get the ball more often than Dylan Grimes playing a lockdown defensive role, so the ratings reflect the opportunities and expectations of each position.
Disposals are all well and good but bad ball use, the sort that can cause turnovers and opposition goals and contribute to losses, is marked harshly.
So, despite his elite ball-winning numbers, Taranto’s ratings points of 10.9 rank him just 50th of the 73 pure midfielders in the AFL. Diving deeper, his ratings measures across most categories are quite good compared to his peers, yet his ball use is ranked 68th.
Kick rating measures the expected outcome based on the difficulty of kicks. Taranto’s rating of -10 per cent is the second-worst of all players in the AFL to have had 100 qualified kicks.

The Beauty of Bont
So what does the best look like? Look no further than second-favourite for the Brownlow Medal, Marcus Bontempelli.
Bontempelli has the highest impact per kick or handball for a midfielder across the AFL, notching 0.80 ratings points per disposal. By comparison, Taranto is going at 0.36, with only Andrew Gaff and Ollie Wines ranking lower among mids.

This strikes to the heart of the debate about disposals, often used as the default stat to determine who played well in a game.
Bontempelli sits 31st in the league for getting the ball but would universally be regarded as one of the best two players in the game this season alongside Nick Daicos, who sits first in the league for disposals.
Taranto sits sixth on the disposals table, yet the ratings points per disposal are what triggered Cornes’ infamous declaration that he wouldn’t be the 150th best player in the game.
Quandary around quality
Richmond’s defeat of West Coast last week is in some ways a microcosm of Taranto’s season.
On the surface, his 32 disposals, 20 contested possessions, 10 clearances and two goals would appear to be the perfect answer to any critics. To most fans, he would have appeared the talisman of a badly-needed win.
But that pesky kicking efficiency? It was at a season low 36 per cent.
Taranto gained 13.0 rating points from his ball-winning but lost 4.1 rating points from his ball use.
His end-of-game ratings points were 10.3, compared to Dion Prestia’s 23-disposal, three-goal game that achieved a 24 point rating, chiefly due to his overall efficiency with the ball.

This is where the crux of the Cornes v Damien Hardwick debate comes into focus.
Taranto’s rating of 10.3 last week ranked him 12th for the Tigers, supporting Cornes’ assertion; which was not particularly provocative when you really think about it.
Cornes was saying that Taranto sits outside the top 20 per cent of AFL senior and rookie-listed players, bringing into question the seven-year investment the Tigers have made. The ladder and Champion Data figures would seem to buttress that.
On the other hand, Hardwick and Eagles coach Adam Simpson combined to give Taranto seven votes as the second-best player on the ground for the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year Award.
In their eyes, he was the Richmond player winning the ball when it mattered and physically imposing himself on the contest.
To bastardise a phrase, Hardwick and the Taranto defenders are saying, ‘’Tis better to have had the ball and lost it (sometimes), than never to have had the ball at all’.
Both views are justifiable.

I read this article and my question is why they don’t write it about Dangerfield who consistently goes at mid 60’s and I’ve lost count of the amount of times he bursts from a centre clearances and blasts the ball out of bounce in the forward pocket - sometimes on the full.
He is revered for this?

Richmond star Tim Taranto has silenced his critics and delivered a subtle jab to media pundit Kane Cornes after Friday night’s victory over Geelong at the MCG.
Taranto played a starring role during Richmond’s 24-point victory over reigning premiers Geelong finishing with 28 disposals, 12 tackles and six clearances.
Speaking to 3AW after the final siren, the midfielder was asked whether he believed he was now one of the league’s 150 top players.
“Oh hopefully, maybe 149,” Taranto said.
“I’m pretty happy with how I’m playing. I’m playing my role each week for the team and giving it a red-hot crack every week and I’m loving it. I’m loving my time here at the Tigers.
“We just wanted to give it a red-hot crack tonight … everybody has still got belief and tonight it showed.”
Taranto signed for Richmond after a six-year stint with the Giants, where he played 114 games since 2017, admitting he was expecting a bit of backlash following his decision to switch clubs.
“I knew it was a part of it. I knew it might come at different stages,” the 25-year-old said.
“I’ve just been trying to keep my head down and get to work.
“I’ve had great support from all the boys getting around me, Dimma’s backing me up, so I’m trying not to take too much notice of it.”
Triple-premiership star Dustin Martin kicked four goals for Richmond on Friday, while former captain Trent Cotchin stepped up with three majors as the Tigers emerged 16.6 (102) to 11.12 (78) victors.
“I think I certainly have got a lot of belief (in the players) and I think the playing group are starting to feel that little heartbeat come back,” Hardwick told reporters in the post-match press conference.
“It looked Richmond-like – dirty goals, the way we got the ball to ground, and the way they charged in.”

It [Friday night] was the sixth time in nine games so far this season that Taranto has recorded the most, or equal most, disposals by a Richmond player.
He’s also had the most, or equal most, contested possessions by a Tiger five times.
“I’m pretty happy with how I’m playing,” he told 3AW in a post-game interview.
“I’m playing my role each week for the team and giving it a red-hot crack every week.
“I’m loving it, loving my time here at the Tiges.”
Taranto is averaging 30.3 disposals, 13.4 contested possessions, 4.3 marks, 7.3 tackles, 6.6 clearances, 4.1 inside-50s, 6.3 score involvements and 397.9 metres gained per match in his debut season with Richmond.
He is ranked third in the competition for disposals, fourth for tackles and eighth for contested possessions.

Richmond star Tim Taranto is the first to concede he’s not a great kick but has hit back at “disappointing” levels of personal criticism from former Port Adelaide star Kane Cornes, declaring he was shocked by the focus on him.
Last week, Tigers coach Damien Hardwick called Cornes, a premiership teammate, to voice his frustration with continued attacks on Taranto, who Cornes said was not in the top 150 players in the league.
Hardwick then went public with his attack, declaring Cornes, who works in various media roles on radio and TV, was only over-analysing Taranto, who crossed to Richmond from GWS on a seven-year deal, for “clicks”.
On Wednesday, Taranto, who is fourth in the AFL for disposals in 2023 and top 10 for contested possessions, clearances and tackles, declared he was shocked by the level of personal criticism, having played his first six seasons in Sydney.
He said Cornes had a “narrative” he was trying to push as part of his various roles, and while Taranto conceded he had things to work on, he found the focus on him disappointing.
“It’s been a bit of a shock … it seems like it’s coming week by week now and I’ve kind of gotten used to Kane’s comments,” Taranto said.
“He’s got a narrative and he’s going hard at it. Now he’s going to analyse and find thing to back up his points, which he is allowed to do, he’s allowed to have an opinion and allowed to read stats and whatnot.
“Good on him and I’m sure his boss is very happy with him and I can’t argue with what he’s saying. Just let him say what he wants.”
Taranto said Cornes and other media pundits could use stats and vision “to make anyone look good or bad”, and the support of Hardwick and his teammates, and back-to-back Richmond wins, made Cornes’ attacks less potent.
“I mean, what he‘s saying is not entirely wrong. Like I’m not a very good kick. I’m not gonna try and say I am. It’s definitely a part of my game I need to work on, there’s no doubt about that,” he told RSN.
“But it’s disappointing. I feel like I’m doing some other things pretty well.
“And I guess you know, you can find numbers and you can find narratives and things on certain players to make anyone look good or anyone look bad. It’s not very hard to do.
“I understand what he’s saying. It’s just disappointing that that’s all that’s been focused on.
“I’ve been backed out really well from Dimma and the midfield coaches and boys as well. They’ve gotten around me really hard and supported me. It’s not like it’s a tough time or anything, what Kane has been saying, because I haven’t really experienced that type of criticism before.
“Everyone’s gonna have lovers and haters. It’s just part of the game and something I’ve accepted and just gotta get through.”

I really think we under estimate how bad we would be without Taranto. Regardless whether it was the right call to draft the GWS boys in hindsight. The guy has carried our side for the majority of the journey.
Sliding Doors we are almost certainly bottom 4 at the end of the year with many players limping over the line, in particular Prestia and Cotch shouldering the work in midfield. With Lynch, Gibcus and Tarrant fit who knows how close we could have gotten to top 8 and who knows. Without him the trades look like they will end up being the wrong call.
Without them I don't think we beat Crows away, they were unreal that day particularly Hopper. Probably don't scramble a draw vs Blues and who knows vs the Cats. We may be winless. For those that say we'd at least have our picks, thats true but we'd feel way worse and their is no gaurentee that the picks we would hold would have been selected correctly and developed properly, our record is ordinary. We atleast can be happy in that we have a player in through the door that will play 150 games and be a seriously good footballer for us.

Taranto and Hopper are keeping us vaguely competitive. We missed Hopper big time on Saturday night, with Dow & Prestia having no impact. Thank goodness the Bombres were missing a heap too, we'd have been smashed.
The recruitment of these two was also necessary to help fill a massive age-profile gap in our list. Without them we'd have had about 6/7 players in that 23-27 yr sweet spot where flags are won. Now we have around 10. Most of the clubs in contention to win it this year have around 18-20 players in that age bracket.

The star midfielder has polled the most votes by a Richmond player in the prestigious award after 10 rounds of the 2023 season.

Cornes is doing his job as a sports commentator.
He provides opinion and from what I’ve heard, owns it when he’s called out for an error. I don’t think he takes himself that seriously.
The nature of his job is to provide opinions and sports commentary and he clearly does this in a provocative way to the biggest supporter bases in order to gain maximum attention and listeners.
KB used to do this with theCheat supporters all the time and it was hilarious.
The fact we have a thread dedicated to him is testimony to his success.

Richmond recruit Tim Taranto found himself in a strange situation on Tuesday.
Just months after Taranto took up a lucrative seven-year offer to join the Tigers, crossing from the Giants last October, the tough midfielder learned the news that the club's three-time premiership coaching legend Damien Hardwick was departing the club.
Hardwick's shock announcement hit hard for Taranto, as it did for every Richmond player, with his manager Matt Bain from TLA Worldwide taking AFL.com.au's trade and draft show Gettable inside a Tuesday night meeting with his client this week.
"He was obviously disappointed, but you'd expect that," Bain told AFL.com.au's Gettable.
"He loves 'Dimma' and a lot of the boys were excited by this next little phase, too. But I think the good part about Richmond, which he's learned early on, is that the culture goes right through their club. It's not like there's one driver and that's it.
"As much as they'll miss him, I think it will be seamless enough because their structures and everything have been in place for a long time. He's excited and he loves being down here in Melbourne."

Taranto has enjoyed an impressive start to his time at Richmond and has averaged 30.6 disposals, 6.8 clearances and 6.9 tackles per game. However, with the Tigers struggling and sitting at 3-1-6, the move has still attracted some criticism.
Hardwick was forced to defend Taranto's performances a fortnight ago, with Richmond parting with picks No.12 and 19 in last year's draft to secure his services from Greater Western Sydney.
"He's found it difficult," Bain said of the increased attention.
"Truthfully, it's one thing he weighed up a lot coming down here. He knew he would go to a big club, play in front of big crowds and in big games. But the other side of being at the Giants is you probably don't get the scrutiny as a player as you do if you're playing here every week.
"It's been a challenge for him to take all of that on and put it to the back of his mind and just play, but that's all of the things you weigh up when you're coming from Sydney town to big Melbourne media."

Tim Taranto has been the subject of arguments in a section of the media around his disposal efficiency and effectiveness of late, but his 33-touch, four-goal performance was a best-on-ground effort.
"Not a bad player, Tim, is he? He's been unbelievably consistent for us this year, an ultra-competitor, every week he gives his all and we love him for it. It was another great game for him," McQualter said.

If Richmond had defeated Yartapuulti on Sunday, Tim Taranto's 33-disposal, seven-clearance and four-goal performance would have rightly been hailed as one of the best individual games of the year. The former Giant has come in for criticism for his disposal efficiency in some matches this season, but as it stands, he has been Richmond's best player across the vast majority of the year. He is averaging a career-high 30.8 disposals, and has already topped last year's goal tally of seven with nine majors. The value of Tim Taranto's impact in his first season at Richmond has been hotly debated, however statistically, the midfielder has never played better.
Since crossing from Greater Western Sydney to the Tigers at the end of last year and entering the football fishbowl of Melbourne, the focus on Taranto has intensified.
After playing arguably the best game of his career on the weekend, in a 33-disposal, four-goal performance against Port Adelaide, Taranto is now averaging more disposals (30.8 ), tackles (6.9), pressure points (65.2), contested possessions (13.2) and clearances (6.8 ) than he ever did at the Giants. He's also hitting career highs in metres gained (403m), score involvements (6.6) and AFL player ratings (11.6).
His new coach Andrew McQualter said the 25-year-old was "letting his performances do the talking."
The numbers continue to tell that story. Taranto sits behind only Collingwood star Nick Daicos for total disposals (339) and seventh overall in total clearances (75).
Champion Data points to Taranto ranking elite in disposals, tackles and pressure points, and above average in contested possessions, clearances, metres gained and score involvements.
He only rates poorly in kicking, an aspect critics have quickly jumped on, with his kicking efficiency at 44.3 per cent effectiveness this season, dropping to the second worst number he has put up in his six years in the AFL.
But, it is on the improve. Since going at 50 per cent disposal efficiency in the Tigers' triumphant victory against Geelong in round nine, Taranto has jumped up to 63 and 66 per cent respectively in his two most recent matches.
In this form, Taranto will be eyeing a possible spot in the All-Australian squad for the first time.
The Tigers signed Taranto on a seven-year deal last off-season in a landmark trade alongside ex-Giants teammate Jacob Hopper, with Taranto producing his best game of the season against the Power. McQualter praised his efforts on Sunday afternoon as well, indicating that the backlash around his form is not recognised internally.
"Not a bad player Tim, is he?" he said.
"He's been unbelievably consistent for us. Every week he gives his all and we love him for it."
Taranto will face his former side for the first time on Sunday when the Giants host the Tigers, with Taranto looking to bring his red-hot form into the clash with his old teammates.

The Richmond recruit, who has been in sparkling form, will become the latest former Giants player to return to his old stomping ground in Sydney’s west. Richmond star Tim Taranto has been lauded for his class after playing a starring role against his old side in a thriller.
Taranto was once again among Richmond's best, tallying 36 disposals and a goal against the side that picked him No.2 overall in the 2016 draft, and was understated in his celebrations after the siren out of respect for his old team.
"Weird game, but it was a good game to watch, I reckon. Fans would've loved it," Taranto told Fox Footy.
"Each quarter was different I reckon. They played their way in the second, we got back in the third and it was probably them in the fourth … Just happy we won."
Taranto's coach Andrew McQualter echoed his star man's sentiment about the "weird" call.
"I spoke to Tim about it pre-game today that it's a bit weird to play against your former club to begin with," he said.
"He gives 100 per cent every week for the team, and we got that again from him today.
"It's just a bit weird, particularly when you know all those guys. It'll take a few times for him to be settled against them, but I was just rapt that he was able to perform and get the win."

It was only last month footy critic Kane Cornes claimed Tim Taranto “wouldn’t be in the top 150 players in the game right now” and suggested the Tigers recruit “didn’t influence games”.
But against Fremantle on Saturday night, Taranto was at his influential best as he and fellow star Shai Bolton helped the Tigers secure a memorable win.
Taranto had 23 disposals, nine contested possessions and two goals to his name in just the opening two quarters before finishing with 35 touches, seven tackles, seven clearances and six score involvements for the game.
Fox Footy’s Cameron Mooney said there was no doubt Taranto was in outstanding form.
“This kid, not only is he going to be their (Richmond’s) best and fairest by a streak, he’s All Australian talk,” he praised.
“He’s having an unbelievable year.”
AFL great Dermott Brereton described Taranto as a “beast” on the footy field.
“He’s in tandem tonight with Dion Prestia. They are the two leaders along with (Toby) Nankveris at the drop of the ball who have just been too tough for Fremantle,” he said.
“We talk about coaching fraternities that want to get the most out of their players … what’s the DNA of Taranto and Prestia? Just put your head over the ball, win it and get it going our way.
“Sometimes the tougher team just gets ahead because they are tougher – and that’s what Richmond are at the moment.
“They’ve out-Tigered them.”

After 13 rounds of the 2023 season, Taranto, who has played every game, is averaging an AFL career-high 31.5 disposals, career-high 13.2 contested possessions, career-high 7.0 clearances, career-high 4.1 stoppage clearances, career-high 2.9 centre clearances, career-high 6.8 tackles, career-high 405.3 metres gained and he’s also kicked 12 goals, which is just one behind his best return for a season of 13 in 2021.
Surely, with his remarkable consistency this season, he has to be front and square in the minds of the All-Australian selectors.

"You forget how young he still is. But just an incredible person - willing to work on everything.

TARANTO PROVING MORE DOUBTERS WRONG WITH BROWNLOW SURGE
Has anyone won a Brownlow Medal while not being one of the 150 best players in the comp?
Richmond’s Tim Taranto just keeps building into a tremendous season, inspiring the Tigers to a third straight win on Saturday night.
And you could argue he’s now the AFL’s in-form player.
Taranto is averaging 35.2 disposals, 7.6 clearances, 6.4 tackles and 1.8 goals over his last five games, putting him in the top few Brownlow contenders according to oddsmakers.
Because he has played an extra game compared to Nick Daicos, he also leads the AFL in disposals overall, though just a standard game from the Magpies young gun would see him regain the lead.
Of course Taranto is much more of a contested player than Daicos; the Tigers midfielder has had around 30 more disposals than the next-ranked player of his type, GWS’ Tom Green.
While the actual damage of his disposals was questioned in the early stages of the season he has turned that around, hurting opponents where it counts including with one of the daggers in the final term on Saturday night against St Kilda.
“You reckon he’ll be up there, in the Brownlow Medal race?” champion forward Eddie Betts asked on Fox Footy post-game.
Brisbane great Jonathan Brown replied: “If they win games in the back end of the year, no doubt ... he’s certainly been very good. And very consistent, most consistent Tigers performer this season.”
Taranto was of course excellent at times at the Giants, most notably in 2019 when he won a best and fairest in just his third season - and in a Grand Final year, no less. He also polled 15 Brownlow votes in 2021.
But it’s safe to say this is the year Taranto has emerged into the public consciousness as a genuine A-grader - partially because of Kane Cornes’ commentary, and partially because of Richmond being a more popular club than GWS... but also because he’s just been that damn good.

EACH season for the past eight years, there has been just one midfielder emerge who stands above the rest when it comes to their 'two-way' game. In 2023, it has been Richmond star Tim Taranto.
Like Adelaide onballer Rory Laird last year, Gold Coast leader Touk Miller in 2021, and Melbourne gun Clayton Oliver before him, Taranto is on track to finish the season with averages of more than 30 disposals and six tackles.
It's a combination that can be used to highlight a player's workrate both defensively and offensively and their ability in the frantic modern game to consistently pop up at contests.
Taranto does this and is among the leading Brownlow Medal contenders as a result in his first season at Richmond, having entered round 18 sitting seventh in the AFL Coaches Association champion player award.
Midfield coach Kane Lambert, who stepped into the role vacated by caretaker Andrew McQualter earlier this season, has worked closely with Taranto this year and puts the 25-year-old's combination of offensive and defensive strengths down to a workrate that is hard to match.
"He's not necessarily the fastest runner, but it was interesting to witness him doing our time trials and the way he got quicker and quicker as the time trial went on," Lambert told AFL.com.au this week.
"It's a bit like how he plays the game where he just consistently shows up, and his contest to contest ability is what helps his statistical numbers but ultimately helps the team.
"That's what he bases his game on, being one of the hardest working players on the field and consistently showing up.
"There's a small gap between Tim's best and worst and the numbers he throws out on the GPS are consistently high. I've really rated his workrate and how important it is to our midfield mix."
Lambert's insight mirrored that of McQualter, who was full of praise for the Tigers' star recruit back in round 13 after a powerful midfield performance against Fremantle at Optus Stadium.
Taranto, who returns to Optus Stadium to take on West Coast on Sunday, had 35 disposals, seven tackles and two goals in that game, with McQualter declaring his workrate was "probably as good as anyone I've ever seen".
The former Giant has quickly earned the respect and appreciation of Richmond's defenders this year, given his ability and willingness to push back and help in transition, while he has already matched his career-best 13 goals.
"The thing that blows me away with Tim is not only does he have high score involvements, high clearances, it's also complemented with a high number of tackles and pressure points," Lambert said.
"It's a real credit to him that maybe one week his offensive output may not be as high as he'd like, but he's still influencing the game defensively.
"So there's no one stat where I look at Tim and think he's having a great game or not, because he's really consistent across both phases."
To highlight Taranto's statistical achievement so far this year, and those who have achieved it in recent seasons, you need to go back to 2014 for the last time more than one player averaged both more than 30 disposals and six tackles, with Brisbane midfielder Tom Rockliff (32.7 and 9.1) and Geelong superstar Gary Ablett jnr (32.1 and 6.1) sharing the two-way crown.

Midfielders who contribute in both phases are among the most respected players in the competition by their opponents, with a handful of gun onballers pushing Taranto this season.
Oliver (33 disposals and 5.6 tackles), Greater Western Sydney young gun Tom Green (31.1 and 5.2), and Fremantle vice-captain Caleb Serong (30.6 and 5.1) all have the ball-winning covered so far and are close with their tackling numbers.
AFL Players' Association MVP Andrew Brayshaw (28.8 and 6.2), Adelaide pair Laird (28.3 and 7.6) and Jordan Dawson (28.1 and 6.2), and St Kilda's Brad Crouch (27.4 and 6.3) have the tackling numbers but not quite the disposal average.
Essendon captain Zach Merrett (29.3 and 5.3) and West Coast gun Tim Kelly (28.3 and 5.3) are close in both categories.
While the top teams have multiple midfielders who can excel in both phases of the game, Lambert said there was a balancing act with roles that needed to be accounted for.
For a workhorse like Taranto, understanding when to step into the contest and when to step back was also something the Tigers' midfield coach worked on with him.
After 114 games with Greater Western Sydney, including an excellent Grand Final performance against the Tigers in 2019 with 30 disposals and seven tackles, Taranto already had the respect of his new teammates as a player when he arrived last October in exchange for picks No.12 and No.19 in the 2022 AFL Draft.
Lambert highlighted that he had also earned it quickly as a person and had been a "great fit" for the club, fast emerging as a leader.
"I only knew Tim very briefly from playing against him, but you get a vibe for what they're like and I've been really impressed by the person he is. He's been a pleasure to coach but also get to know," the midfield coach said.
"He's probably a bit more reserved than what I thought he was coming to the football club … but he's got an ability to build relationships with anyone.
"I've got no doubt he'll be a leader of our football club for a long period of time, and I've seen that grow all year."

Tim Taranto was instrumental in Richmond’s win, with three goals to go with his 23 disposals. Unfortunately, his KFC SuperCoach score fell well short of where it could have been, with Taranto paying the price for a career-high 13 clangers. He leads the AFL in this stat for the season with 101, 15 more than Tim Kelly (86), with Stephen Coniglio and Christian Petracca next on 83. Taranto hit the target with five of his 14 kicks against Hawthorn for a kicking efficiency of 35.7 per cent, the fourth-worst on the field (ahead of Josh Weddle, Trent Cotchin and Jai Newcombe). That is a hell of a lot of clangers in one game. Made up for it and then some with those 3 clutch goals.
Still something to work on and improve on for TT next season. I don’t put too much weight on it given it’s usually the inside mids who are winning the clearances in tight and getting it fwd under pressure. But +15 more then the next highest is a decent gap.

I think the early season clangers was when our midfield mix wasn’t right and he was disposing under a lot of pressure off balance etc. hawthorn was a bad kicking game all round but I feel like on this side of the bye his kicking has improved a lot with cotchin and Martin going through there

TIM TARANTO (RICHMOND) - A
Taranto has delivered on everything Richmond knew he would - huge leadership, phenomenal gut running, relentless accumulator, the ability to get forward and kick goals.
And kicking efficiency that has hovered around between 45-60 per cent across his entire career.
So for the price of picks 12 and 19 he has been everything they hoped for, kicking a superb 18 goals.
He will never be a great kick but against Melbourne only four of his 12 kicks were effective so he has a clear RFI (room for improvement) given he is only 25 years of age.

His field kicking is average at best and he does have the habit of kicking forward blindly.
However, he's had a great year and were lucky to have him.

By no means does Taranto kick laser beams but his rushed kicks into f50, I feel half the time it’s actually not a bad kick but our forward set up is woeful and our forward line aren’t ready for the entry.
My intuition tells me if we had lynch eventually they would have gelled and he would have absolutely relished the dump kicks

Taranto’s omission especially is set to fire up Tigers fans.
Luke Hodge and Andy Maher were two who suggested Taranto should have been given a run.
“The Tim Taranto one… halfway through the year I think (All-Australian selector Kane Cornes) said he wanted to see him kick more goals… he averaged almost one a game, had 140 odd clearances, averaged 29 touches a game, I thought it was a pretty consistent year,” Hodge said on SEN's Sportsday.
“He did so much well in a team that did struggle.”
Maher, speaking on SEN’s The Run Home, added: “Tim Taranto is going to be the hot potato here.
“If I had to take one out to put one in… I’m taking Stephen Coniglio out to put Taranto in.”
Coniglio, Patrick Cripps, Noah Anderson and Jai Newcombe were all selected above the first-year Richmond midfielder.
Taranto has averaged 28.8 disposals, 6.2 clearances, 6.7 tackles and 3.5 inside 50s to quickly become Richmond’s most important midfielder, as Dustin Martin spends more time in the forward line.

I think what gets lost in all this is just how dire our midfield stocks was with ball winning mids.
We still dont have any of his type in development and we really need to be planning now for when he and Hopper are not there.
Me i would be targeting kids around 188/85 who know how to get their hands on the ball and have good break away pace. They dont need to be elite by foot but need to be proficient. They can have a few rough edges that we sand back and improve.
Look at us last year imo a bit slow in the midfielld and even with Taranto we were 16th for disposals 11th for contested possesions and 13th for clearances how bad would this have been without Taranto.
It has been tough getting kids in while on top but if im going to be critical i think we have been very poor when it comes to drafting the right types and succession planning.
People the media everywhere saying we sold the farm to get Taranto and Hopper but the truth is list management and succession planning has been that poor that we had no choice. Where we continue to get it wrong having got those two is we refuse to draft similar type kids.

Richmond midfielder Tim Taranto has declared he finally feels settled in the yellow and black, after a tumultuous 2023 season.
The Tigers parted ways with three-time premiership coach Damien Hardwick in May, in what was Taranto's first season for Richmond.
Before that, the 26-year-old endured his former GWS Giants coach Leon Cameron's abrupt departure from the club in May 2022
It was Hardwick's exit that shook up the former powerhouse club, with their beloved coach, who brought them their first premiership in 30 years, heading up north just months after citing he was "burnt out".
Hardwick is now the senior coach of the Gold Coast Suns, confident he can take their to a maiden finals appearance this season.
Despite the unfortunate exit just as Taranto kicked off his career with Richmond, he still managed to take home their best and fairest after a stand out inaugural season in the yellow and black.
Now, he's finally feeling like he's at home, thanks to some stability at the top, with Melbourne champion Adam Yze appointed coached in September.
"Knock on wood, Yze can keep his job this year," Taranto joked at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday.
"A bit of stability will be good. I feel like everyone has settled in now."
Taranto did not feature in the Tiger's win over Melbourne in their practice match, but is raring to go as they face the reigning premiers next week.
"Got managed last week. I probably could have played, but we've got a game on Tuesday, which is against the Pies for the charity shield match," Taranto said.

Richmond’s reigning club champion Tim Taranto says some of what the Tigers dished up on Sunday was “unacceptable” but believes their season remains alive despite slumping to 0-3.
“There were good patches in that game, then some really bad ones – and that doesn’t get you wins, unfortunately,” Taranto told The Age.
“That third quarter [conceding seven goals to four] and the start of the fourth was pretty poor from us, especially the mids. I reckon we got beaten in the contest at centre bounce [but] we’ve got a young team in, so it was good to get some game time into those boys. We’re still just searching for those four [consistent] quarters.”
Taranto praised forward Seth Campbell (third game) and defender Tom Brown (second), as well as more seasoned young players Ben Miller and Jack Ross, and said Richmond were most focused on improving.
Unbeaten Sydney and another 2023 finalist, St Kilda, fresh from defeating last year’s premiers Collingwood, await the Tigers in the next fortnight.
“Footy never does get easier, but you never know [what can happen],” Taranto said.
“Like, 0-3, I know that stings a bit, but we don’t really have an expectation. It’s just trying to get better each week – that’s our motto – and I mean, it’d be great if we were 3-0, but we’re not, so we’ll just keep trying to get better.
“The season will be what the season is. Who knows what it is? Nothing’s ruled out yet; it’s f---ing three games in. There’s plenty of the season to go.”
Taranto made it clear they were “not just going to roll over” and would continue to do everything possible to win games despite critics making them a popular choice to finish in the bottom four.

Tim Taranto On His “Leadership Perspective” Since Arriving At Tigerland
Richmond star Tim Taranto admits he’s excited by the opportunity to lead the club through a difficult period.
“I’m thriving under these conditions, I’ve got more of a leadership perspective now,” Taranto told Triple M’s Wednesday Rub.
“I’ve got this opportunity to lead the club and get back up the ladder over the next couple of years.”
Taranto added that he is eying off a return to footy within “five to six weeks”.
