The Run Home

4 October 2022

8. Richmond

16 points (four wins, two losses), 127.4 per cent

The Tigers have done the opposite of the Western Bulldogs so far this season. After two losses in their opening fortnight, they have gone on a tear, winning four consecutive games including a crucial one over Brisbane. They just have one current top eight side left to play - North Melbourne in round 10 - and are better placed than ever to make their first ever finals series. They are another side who is yet to leave their home state after six rounds, with trips to Perth and Mildura on the cards for the final month.

The run home
R7: West Coast at Mineral Resources Park
R8: Carlton at Ikon Park
R9: Greater Western Sydney at Mildura Sporting Precinct
R10: North Melbourne at Arden Street

AFLW Injury Report: Round 7

By Richmond Media
4 October 2022

Maddy Shevlin, ankle

"She sustained that injury late in the last quarter and we were a bit concerned early. But, it looks like it's a significant lateral ankle ligament injury. She's actually going quite well, she'll have a period off legs, but we expect her to hopefully be available within a month or so. She'll have a little bit of times on the sidelines but it's certainly a good result from initial thoughts."

Jess Hosking

"Jess had a concussion test in the start of the last quarter and was cleared to return to play, so she'll be available this week."

Ellie McKenzie, calf

"Ellie had a little bit of calf soreness last week. We were a little bit conscious with her history and also because she's a young player, so we felt it was too big of a risk to play her. She'll train today (Tuesday) and test it, and assuming she gets through well, she'll be available to play."

Katie Brennan, foot

"Katie's been going through her individual plan based on her foot stress fracture. Each week, we review that and we do have a fairly solid plan in place. Similar (to Ellie), we'll test her tonight with the hope that she'll play this week."

Sarah Hosking, hamstring

"Sarah sustained an injury against the Bombers (Round 4) where she hurt her hamstring tendon. That's something that she's had before, so we're just working through her return to play progressions at the moment. She's going really well, she's feeling really good, and we're really hopeful for her to play in the next couple of weeks."

Rebecca Miller, hamstring

"Bec sustained a hamstring injury against the Hawks (Round 3). She had a little bit of a setback early last week, but in a similar time frame (to Sarah Hosking), but we're looking for her to play in the next couple of weeks."

Sarah D’Arcy, calf

"She has a calf strain that she's been working through. She's returned to running, she'll build her loads this week... We're hoping she'll be available next week for Round 8."

Poppy Kelly, ankle

"Poppy sustained that ankle injury early in the season. She's going really well, she's come out of the boot and we're looking to progress her function and her loads over the next couple of weeks. We're hopeful that she could potentially return by the end of the season for Round 10 and beyond."

Steph Williams, knee

"Steph unfortunately sustained a knee injury against Brisbane (Round 5) last week. We scanned that and there is some ACL damage there, it's not a rupture, it's a bit of a strain to that ACL. So, she'll be on the sidelines for a number of weeks and that will unfortunately rule her out for the season, but we're pretty confident that we can manage that and she's doing really well so far."

AFLW Richmond star Mon Conti still holds Opals dream of playing basketball for Australia

By Evan Morgan Grahame for The W with Sharni and Sam
ABC
5 October 2022

Watching as the Opals won bronze at the FIBA World Cup, Richmond's superstar midfielder Monique Conti saw some familiar faces.

"I've played with many of those girls, which is pretty cool," Conti told The W with Sharni and Sam podcast.

"And I love basketball, I still just absolutely love it."

Seeing Lauren Jackson and her teammates triumph, Conti may also have felt the echo of an alternate reality, a different timeline, one in which she was winning and wearing World Cup medals in the green and gold.

Conti wants 'foot in the door' for elite basketball

Like many AFLW stars — Erin Phillips (basketball), Ash Brazill (netball) and Emma Kearney (cricket) just to name a few — Conti has played another sport, basketball, at the elite level.

She debuted in the WNBL for the Melbourne Boomers in 2016, and won a league title with the Southside Flyers in 2020.

She represented Australia at the under-17 world championships, snapping the USA's 28-game win streak, winning gold, and being named in the team of the tournament.

But as a talented and lifelong footballer, Conti was drafted by the Western Bulldogs in 2018, won an AFLW premiership there, was an All-Australian, and has established herself as arguably the best player in the league since moving to Richmond.

But she still loves hooping.

"I still play WNBL1," Conti says.

"I was thinking of doing WNBL this season, whether that's training with the club or not.

"I still want to be involved, have my foot in the door.

"I just feel like with basketball — this is hard to say — but with basketball ... if you're a footballer that plays basketball, it's actually a lot harder to make your mark in basketball.

"Whether or not any more doors open for me as a basketballer, because I do play football, we'll have to wait and see — ask me that in five years."

Pressure to specialise made Conti 'feel disrespected'

Conti says she was pressured to specialise as a young athlete.

"I actually got told this: 'You can't play at an elite level in two different sports.' I was like, but why?

"Why can't I? Yes, I can, and I went off to do that.

"But when that's coming from a high-level person at a club, it makes you feel disrespected, it makes you feel like no-one is in your corner.

"They want to own you."

Conti says her experience at Southside Flyers was very supportive.

"It wasn't like that," she says.

"It was definitely nothing but support.

"It's really hard to speak about it, because I have so much love for the sport in general, it's just some people involved that don't understand you can be good at two things.

"And it's really hard for the girls growing up ... if they have coaches from other sports telling them they can't do football and that sport. Why not?

"Shouldn't we be promoting girls who are good at sport?"

Australian rep dream still alive for Conti

The ambition of representing Australia with the Opals is something Conti still harbours.

"I still say that," she says.

"I don't know what the next day, the next two years, are going to be like for me, but I would love to do that.

"I still have my hopes and dreams to represent my country on the world stage, for the Opals, but I don't know when that's going to be, or if that's going to be ... but it would be nice."

For now, Conti's happy to be powering Richmond to a four-game winning streak, and she says the Tigers are primed to make the finals this season.

"We've come into this season not wanting to compete anymore, we're wanting to win," she says.

"We know what we want, we know how to get there, so let's just do it."

And Conti has been supreme this season, in fact all year: of the 16 games she's played in 2022, only twice has she failed to register at least 20 disposals.

Late last month, Carlton AFLW coach Daniel Harford called her the best player in the comp.

And Geelong star Patrick Dangerfield is a big fan.

The admiration is mutual, Conti says.

"He's so good, did you see him in that grand final? I think he got robbed of the Norm Smith.

"He's awesome, I didn't actually know that he'd tweeted that.

"Bless his cotton socks."

West Coast v Richmond Preview

Gemma Bastiani
womens.afl
7 October 2022

The Eagles are yet to beat the Tigers in their two meetings to date, despite both entering the competition in the same year. This season, although only claiming two wins to date, West Coast is averaging a club-high 27.7 points off the back of a more attacking style of play and rebuilt forward line. It's the other end of the ground, despite being a club-low they are conceding 39.7 points per game, which is where they have been caught out in recent losses. Richmond, however, has been operating quite differently. Although averaging 24.8 points for this season – 10 points fewer each week than last season – what it has specifically done is lock down in defence, conceding just 19.5 points a game. The Tigers are making it very, very hard for opponents to score.

This one will be a clash of styles. West Coast looks to win it at the source thanks to the strength of Emma Swanson, Bella Lewis, and Sarah Lakay on the ball, and move into attack from there. Richmond instead is struggling to consistently win high clearance numbers, instead looking to intercept behind play and launch into attack from there. The question for its defensive line, however, is what the loss of Maddie Shevlin now does given it is already without Bec Miller, and Poppy Kelly's absence means Gabby Seymour is needed higher up the field.

Tip: At home, the Eagles will push for their first ever win over the Tigers. West Coast by two points.

Wakefield good mark on the lead 35 out. Kick to the line is touched through.

We get it back from the kick-in. Dempsey on the run to the goalsquare and it's rushed through by an Eagle defender.

Last 5-10 mins all over them. Good forward pressure across HF. Kept the ball in our forward half and allowed for repeat entries.

Sheerin is a gun btw.

Yep. Very hot on HTB. We've gained from a couple of dodgy ones. Makes up for previous games  ;).

Mind you the game is flowing well. Not many scrummages and piles on slowing the ball movement.

Need to have someone man their goal keeper on the line. Basically had the ball in our forward 50 for a good 5 minutes there and most plays were cut off by an uncontested intercept mark around the goal square.

One word - wasteful! Had the ball inside 50 enough that quarter but chose the wrong option every time. Too many blind kicks to the Eagles spare. When we did get our hands on it inside 50 we tried too much and stuffed up chances.

The main positive aside from the win was we finished every quarter the stronger in the final 5 mins. We needed to as we kept the Eagles in the game with our brainfades. Reminded me of our men's team this year. The final margin is a better reflection of the game as we dominated most of the play all night but it should not have got so close midway through the last (back to 6 pts).

Sheerin was BOG.
Egan got reward at the end for her hard work. It was a 'nearly' game up until then. Won a heap of contested ball but was caught HTB a few times. Just couldn't get clear at the last moment.
I thought it was Cox's best game for us by far. She seemed to have Shevlin's role and stood up.
MacDonald solid down back. Arguably her best game for us too.
Kiely was lively across HF.
Dempsey lifted after half-time.
Wakefield contested well as our sole key forward. At least hit the packs and brought the ball to ground.
Seymour did well again in the ruck against another bigger opponent.

Good win. Need to get better at making territory dominance and fwd 50 entries count.
Agree TK. Midfield/forward line needs to find a better connection and our forward set-up seems out of position and out-of-sync. Obviously helps when Brennan is up forward giving us another marking target but our small forwards seem to be out of position too often when the ball hits the deck. Definitely, at F50 stoppages they need to get behind the ball rather than all running forward of it. Old school front and square like Reid's goal.

Sheerin best by a mile just so strong and breaks tackles, creates and works her arse off.  :clapping

I really like Egan I think she’s getting better and better each game and her tackling pressure on the ball carrier is excellent.

Conti is just such a great player it goes without saying

Wakefield was excellent all game was smashing the contest and took some important marks her work rate was elite I thought.

Gabby Seymour battled against the odds and I reckon she came out on top in the end.

Thought Kiely’s game was one of her best. She presented well and took some grabs.
Dempsey was solid.

I thought players like Lynch, Cox and MacDonald had really good games and lifted their standard.

Reid had her best game I’ve seen. I was shocked hopefully she keeps can build on that work rate and forward half tackling.  :clapping

McKenzie was a little disappointing I think she’s better than her output and she needs to kick it more and back herself in and use her body more like Sheerin does. She could be the best player in the game.

Yassir up forward was a tackling machine unfortunately she didn’t get much reward for her work.

Molan …………………. :doh :facepalm.

Tigers continue march towards AFLW finals

By Ronny Lerner
AAP/ The Age
October 8, 2022

Richmond's charge towards a maiden AFLW finals berth has continued as they held off a spirited West Coast outfit by 19 points at Lathlain Park in Perth.

The Tigers looked on course for a comfortable win when they opened up a 19-point lead at halftime after a dominant opening two quarters, but the Eagles hit back hard in the second half.

And thanks to a goal-of-the-year contender from their captain Emma Swanson, they got within six points late in the game.

But just as the Eagles looked like pinching a massive upset win, Richmond's Laura McClelland took a courageous mark as she went back with the flight of the ball with little regard for her own safety and took a chest grab before West Coast's Kate Bartlett cannoned into her running from the opposite direction.

It proved to be a match-winning play as it changed the momentum back in Richmond's favour, allowing Grace Egan to kick the last two goals and seal the victory.

The 6.7 (43) to 3.6 (24) result saw the Tigers extend their club record winning streak to five games and provisionally catapulted them into fifth on the ladder.

Egan also had 18 disposals and seven tackles to be the best player on the ground.

She enjoyed great support from Eileen Sheerin, who was outstanding with 21 disposals (12 contested) and a goal, while Mon Conti continued to push her case as the best player in the league with another 18 touches (12 contested), three clearances and a goal.

The win came at a cost for the Tigers, though, with Sophie Molan coming off second best in an ugly head clash with West Coast's Ella Smith in the first quarter and taking no further part in the game.

Meagan Kiely was also reported for a dangerous tackle on Emma Humphries.

The Tigers had won their previous three games by two, four and four points respectively, and as they looked headed for another thriller in the final term, Ferguson described it as an unwanted case of deja vu.

"You can look at that (glass) half full (or) half empty, right? Because the response form that moment (when West Coast got within six points) was just outstanding and I just thought we controlled the game completely from that moment," Ferguson said.

Charlotte Thomas was superb for the Eagles in defence with a game-high 23 disposals, while Swanson was also brilliant with 19 touches, 11 contested possessions and nine tackles.

West Coast dominated the clearances 23-15, but got comprehensively beaten on the outside as Richmond smashed them in the inside 50s (39-20) and also enjoyed a comfortable buffer in contested possessions (109-95).

"There's a few things that we can get better at to get more inside 50s," West Coast coach Michael Prior said.

Whatever happens this weekend, Richmond will remain at least a game inside the top eight with just three rounds to go.

And with match-ups against bottom-10 sides Carlton and GWS still in their run home, Richmond will like their chances of featuring in the finals.

-----------------------------------------

RICHMOND has extended its winning run to five games and moved closer to a maiden finals appearance after a hard-fought 19-point win against West Coast at Mineral Resources Park on Friday night.

After a nail-biting run of close wins, the Tigers were again forced to fight to the end, putting West Coast away in the final five minutes to win 6.7 (43) to 3.6 (24).

Grace Egan sealed the win with the final two goals as the Tigers notched their fifth win of the season and put themselves in the mix for a top four finish at the end of their fourth AFLW season.

The visitors had control for most of the night, but West Coast captain Emma Swanson cut the margin to just eight points early in the fourth quarter when she got free on the boundary and converted on the run.

The Eagles continued to surge but couldn't get the extra goal they needed before Richmond executed what was the critical play of the night.

It started at half back where Laura McClelland stood under the ball to take a courageous, crunching mark before moving the ball along the wing, where Gabrielle Seymour and Courtney Wakefield also took big contested marks.

Superstar Monique Conti then got involved, marking at half forward and then sending the ball inside 50 with a perfectly weighted pass to Egan, who finished what was a terrific team goal and the match-winner.

Eilish Sheerin was the star for the Tigers, finishing with 21 disposals (12 contested), six inside 50s and her first AFLW goal, while Conti was all class throughout with 18 and three clearances.

Egan's team-high two goals proved vital in the end, with midfielder Meg Macdonald (15 and four clearances) important in the stoppage battles.

West Coast, wearing its pride jumper, continues to improve but fell to its fifth loss in six games, remaining winless against the Tigers from three attempts now, despite the teams entering the AFLW competition together.

Charlie Thomas worked hard to finish with 23 disposals and seven rebound 50s, while captain Emma Swanson (19 and nine tackles) tried to will the team home in the final term.

Exciting forward Ella Roberts continues to show flashes of brilliance and was able to win the ball and burst into space, finishing with 14 disposals and four inside 50s.

Sheerin's reward

A great story of perseverance, Eilish Sheerin joined Richmond as a 29-year-old recruit in June and has quickly found her feet at Tigerland after making a brilliant debut in round one. On Friday night her season went to a new level, kicking her first AFLW goal when she converted on the run with class from an angle.

Up next

Richmond launches round eight in the first match of a Friday night doubleheader, facing Carlton at Ikon Park at 6.30pm AEDT.

Noticed AFL senior umpire Jacob Mollison was out there umpiring tonight.

Demoted?

Girls plated well. Particularly without Brennan and S Hosking.

We make finals from here. Big chance at top.4!!

No, not demoted.

The AFL try and do this every season. They ask AFL seniors if they will umpire AFLW to help mentor the young umpires coming through via the AFLW. Never been a problem before as they used it as part of their pre-season

For S7 didn't look like it would happen as some of the AFL umps sooked and said it impacted on their time off. I appluad Mollison for doing it. Last night's game was umpired alot better.

Have always said this season we have a very soft draw and we should and had to make finals,  no excuses.

They are playing alot better than at the start of the season

Just wish they'd get the conversion rate up to where it needs to be.  Should have won by 5 or 6 goals last night

AFLW Season 7: Round 7 Talking Points – Tigers’ high five

Michael Alvaro

October 8, 2022

Richmond’s top four hopes are well and truly alive after the Tigers came away from their Perth road trip with a club record fifth-straight victory. While a relatively young West Coast side proved plucky throughout, the visitors kicked clear in the final five minutes to win 6.7 (43) to 3.6 (24).

TALKING POINTS

By the Grace of Greg

Though Richmond had been in control of the game from the first goal, West Coast bridged a 19-point half time deficit back to six with plenty of time left to play in the final term. Enter Tigers midfielder Grace Egan, who had endured a seemingly frustrating night to that point, but put it behind her to boot the two game-sealing goals. Her clutch conversions were the cherry on top of a combative effort typical of her side’s last month of footy.

Top four Tigers?

Dare to dream, Tigers fans. With a fifth consecutive victory, Richmond has drawn level with the top four clubs on 20 points, albeit with an extra game under its belt, and will have sights set on earning a finals double chance. Boasting arguably the competition’s best player, Monique Conti and the top recruit of the season in Eilish Sheerin, there is plenty to like about how the Tigers have turned their fortunes around – even while missing 213 games of experience on Friday night. This season has already produced a team-best effort, and there promises to be plenty more to come.

Sheerin gets off the Hook’

One of the great finds of Season 7, Sheerin’s remarkable maiden campaign rolled on with another near-best afield performance. The dashing defender collected a team-high 22 touches and booted her first AFLW goal, after Stella Reid shared the love inside 50. Her major gave the Tigers an ultimately unassailable half time lead, with Sheerin’s timing on overlap runs and strength to power forward proving game-breaking traits. It was a wonder the likes of Dana Hooker didn’t go to her in a defensive role. At the other end, emerging Eagle Charlotte Thomas was just as resolute for her 23 disposals and seven marks.

Stone Cold Swanson

It came as no surprise to see Eagles skipper Emma Swanson leading the charge for her side on Friday night, as she continues to hit new heights in Season 7. The reliable midfielder cracked in for 19 disposals and nine tackles, but arguably her greatest contribution came when resting forward in the final term. Retrieving a forward 50 entry from Hooker which looked certain to dribble over the boundary line, Swanson outfoxed Kodi Jacques and made her look a fool, snatching the ball before breaking towards goal and finishing with a crafty checkside. It gave her side a real sniff.

Eagles three-quarters of the way there

Having fielded a historically young side last time out, West Coast again gave itself a chance of winning but could not quite pull off the four-quarter performance required. The Eagles showed fight but were beaten in the territory battle to half time, until a third term fightback got them back into the contest. Winning seven clearances to one in that time, with Courtney Rowley converting the quarter’s only goal, the hosts were within touching distance but just fell short of making the effort count after Swanson’s exploits. It follows back-to-back three-point losses – they’re close.

Tigers seek answers over Molan head knock

Ronny Lerner
AAP
Sat, 8 October 2022

Richmond coach Ryan Ferguson will be seeking answers as to why midfielder Sophie Molan spent so much time off the ground after suffering a nasty head knock during the Tigers' AFLW win over West Coast in Perth.

Molan came off second best in an ugly clash of heads with West Coast's Ella Smith in the first quarter of their 6.7 (43) to 3.6 (24) win on Friday and took hardly any further part in the game.

But Ferguson said Molan was fine after passing her concussion test and intimated she could have had more of an involvement in the contest.

"She seemed to be off the ground for a long time, so we'll have to look into that," Ferguson said.

"Whether that's on us or the AFL, but she was off for way too long.

"Don't know why she was off for so long."

In more positive news for the Tigers, Ferguson hoped that star forward Katie Brennan would return for their match against Carlton in the next round after she sat out the Eagles clash with a foot injury.

"We've just got to, day by day, make sure that we look after her and that she's right to play but I'd be hoping she can play next week and then we'll see whether she can back up again or not," Ferguson said.

Richmond were also missing injured pair Maddie Shevlin and Rebecca Miller, and Ferguson said it was a great sign that, even without some of their key players, his team extended their winning streak to five games.

"We don't have to worry about the 'woulddas', 'shoulddas' and 'coulddas' and, 'Oh, if only we had all of our players fit or more of our players fit'," Ferguson said.

"We trust that we have depth in our list that can come in and play a role on any given day."
