Richmond has named its extended squad for Round 2.

By Richmond Media
Just now

Richmond has added six players to its extended squad for Sunday afternoon's clash with Port Adelaide at the MCG, including a potential debutant.

Powerful utility Mykelti Lefau is a chance to play his first game at the level after being named in the squad of 26.

The 25-year-old was elevated from Richmond's VFL program last month as a Supplementary Selection Period selection.

Tiger tall Ben Miller could be recalled for his first appearance of 2024 as a replacement option for unavailable defenders Josh Gibcus and Tylar Young.

Meanwhile, promising young defender Tom Brown could be in line to run out for his second AFL match.

Miller was a standout in the VFL Tigers' practice match win over Carlton Reserves last Thursday, with coach Steve Morris noting his performance as "probably the best game I've seen Ben play".

"I thought he was an outstanding leader of our back six," Morris said.

"He won the ball back for us, he took three contested marks, he had an impact with his big spoils and he used the ball well.

Morris was equally impressed with Judson Clarke, who also features in the squad.

"After an interrupted preparation for the season after surgery on his shoulder, he has started to hit some red-hot form," Morris said.

"His last month of footy has been outstanding."

Ruck/forward Samson Ryan and wingman Sam Banks could also be recalled to the Tigers' line-up after being omitted for Round 1.

Coming out of the side is Gibcus, who ruptured his ACL last Thursday night against Carlton, Young, who suffered a concussion during the clash, and Dion Prestia, who injured his hamstring in the game,e

Richmond will confirm its final Round 2 team on Friday night at 5.00pm AEDT.

The Club will then name its substitute 60 minutes prior to the first bounce on Sunday.

Sunday's game will be broadcast live on FOX FOOTY and Kayo Sports.

I concur, but with 3 forced changes we were never going to swing the axe that hard after pushing Carlton to the end. They're top 6 fancies surely and we're bottom 6 for sure you'd think.

Young will be back next week but we might see more hacks dropped.

Juries still out until we see the 22, but very happy to see brown, clarke and banks named. I’m just going to assume they held sonsie back as he was coming back from suspension.

No Kane McA?

Rare that a non-first rounder gets chucked in straight away - probably waiting until he at least plays a few games of competitive footy first....also speaks to the inherent stupidity of not syncing up  the VFL season with the AFL season.... :shh

Do we need 2 ruckmen to take on the might of Ivan Soldo ??

Could just play Pickett and run around him all day.... :shh :shh

I get the senior blokes , but you lost me at Dow and Ross. Get games into them and let's see if they can swim or sink. As for Ryan yep he has weaknesses,  but he has good traits to still acwork on progress.

Have a look at the injury lists - every club except Gold Coast has at least 5 on the list, some have up to 10. We have one of the shorter lists.

A big old dose of common sense would say we need to play Balta back having lost Young, Gibcus and now Broad.
Imo that means Lefau in to the 18 and we play a second ruck fwd but not bloody Samson Ryan who at the level is physically inept atm.

Jack Ross has played 50 odd games is that not enough for you. He is what he is there is no upside to him.
Thomson Dow just has too many deficiencies.

If we were to play a second ruck it should be Naismith and not Ryan. For me Ryan just does not have the aggression that is needed for the role and he certainly does not have the size and strength that is needed at the moment. Have grave doubts he will make it and i certainly would not be banking on him being our future ruckman.

Five changes to Face Port

By Richmond Media

Richmond has made five changes to its line-up for Sunday's clash with Port Adelaide at the MCG.

As announced earlier on Friday, athletic utility Mykelti Lefau will make his AFL debut against Port, just 34 days after becoming a Richmond AFL player via the Pre-Season Supplementary Selection Period.

The 195cm 25-year-old, who was born in New Zealand and initially moved to Melbourne over a decade ago to pursue a rugby career, has enjoyed a remarkable rise to the top level.

The Tigers have recalled versatile tall Ben Miller for match, who will add to his 25 career AFL games.

Also returning to the line-up are young defenders Tom Brown and James Trezise, who are both back for their second AFL outings after debuting in Round 24 last year.

Twenty-year-old Brown, who was named as an emergency for the Tigers' opening two games of 2024, drew praise from VFL coach Steve Morris after last Thursday's VFL practice game against Carlton, where he recorded 17 disposals, five marks and four rebound-50s.

"He looks so composed and calm with the footy down back and won the ball back for us consistently on the day," Morris said.

Morris said Trezise, who collected 16 disposals and four marks in the VFL practice game, was ready for another opportunity at the next level.

"James is in some really good form. He continues to win the ball back for us and he used the ball particularly well on Thursday," Morris said.

Rounding out the inclusions is hard-running wingman Sam Banks, who was omitted from Richmond's Round 1 side after playing in the Opening Round.

Coming out of the side is Josh Gibcus, who ruptured his ACL last Thursday night against Carlton, Tylar Young, who suffered a concussion during the clash, Dion Prestia, who injured his hamstring in the game, Nathan Broad, through calf soreness, and Jacob Hopper, due to a knee issue.

The Tigers have selected Samson Ryan, Judson Clarke and Hugo Ralphsmith as their three emergencies.

Sunday's game kicks off at 4.00pm and will be broadcast live on FOX FOOTY and Kayo Sports.

Richmond Coach Adem Yze said the territory game was going to be crucial, but he "backed (Richmond's) system" in to deliver.

"They've got some speed, they've got some amazing midfield talent. We're hoping to match them inside... around clearance, around stoppage," Yze said.

"It was good to have our captain (Nankervis) back last week and it will give some opportunity for some younger players as well against some quality midfielders.

"We've just got to start well and have a really consistent performance over four quarters.

"We can't wait. Our first home game at the 'G (for the season), we'll get an opportunity in front of our supporters."

Despite the 5 injuries you just have to ask how did some keep their spots.
We are going nowhere with them and the club needs to grow some balls and start making some tough decisions.

Chance of a 10 goal loss, history shows if you don’t have the experience around the kids they quickly lose confidence  and start to doubt their own ability, maybe someone can point out a team of under 23’s that were beating the top teams ?

WTF The excuses are rolling out already. What lack of experience.

There are just 2 kids in the starting 18. Trezise at 21 and Campbell at 19.
There are two debut's Lefau a 25yo  mature recruit and Trezise at 21.

The real problem is we have seen just about every player named who is 23 and under in even more experienced sides and they have been underwhelming.

The average age of the named backline is 26.8, with four players with well over 100 games. Another is in his 7th year in our system. The midfield and onballers is 27.5 with five players with well over 100 games. The other is in his 5th season
The forward half is 25.6. with three players with over 100 games. One fast approaching that milestone and  Another is in his fifth season.

Imo we have named just 4 players that i would call kids. Trezise 21 yr 2. Campbell 19 year 2. Brown 20 year 3, Banks 21 year 3.

There is a ton of experience in that team despite losing 5 of our better more experienced players. If we lose badly it will not be because of a lack of experience.
Its time for those mid tier players with experience to stand up, god knows we keep on picking them. Time to show they actually belong. Show they can actually drag the club up the ladder.
