Title: Leadership group for next year
Post by: mightytiges on July 17, 2004, 03:50:26 AM
We obviously lack on-field leaders especially when the opposition get a run on. I can't remember off the top of my head who currently are our leadership group (Cambo, Johnson, Brown, Stafford, Tivs,..) but who should be there next year and who deserves to be promoted into it next year? The obvious one is Cogs but will he be pushed up when he's missed most of this year through his pelvic instability injury.

Richo's much improved on-field attitude should get him back in IMO. I also think if Ottens stays he should be a leader and have it made clear to him that he is. Newman is another I would consider.

I think it appears to be a bad omen being part of the leadership group, you either get injured or lose form or both:

Campbell
Gas
Tiv
Chaffey
Staff

Bowden got dropped from the group and he's now in career best form - nuff said! Richo is also no longer a member and his form has also been good.

Johnson - captain
Campbell (if he plays) or Brown - vice captain
Brown and Cogs  - deputies

Put Bowden and Richo back into the leadership group, add Newman to it

Trade Tivendale, Chaffey, Kellaway, Gaspar, Fiora and Ottens for sure

Our current leadership group is:

Campbell
Gaspar
Ottens
Stafford
Johnson
A. Kellaway
Tivendale
Chaffey

8 seems to be the number for most clubs when you talk leadership group,  I wonder if we have 8?

This is who I'd have next year:

Johnson - Captain
Brown - Vice Captain
Campbell - experience
Coughlan - future
Ottens - if he is there  ;) enforce responsilbility on him
Stafford - natural leader
Newman - maybe - can we please try him in the mid-field -

I wouldn't put Richo or Bowden back into the group - they are playing well now.

Leadership has been an issue at Richmond for a number of years.  So I’d be developing a different system and would have a secondary leadership group (like an apprenticeship) for the younger players.  This way, those players can display leadership qualities in a group that may not be so daunting or intimidating as a senior group of players.

There’s no doubt that some of the younger players already display leadership qualities and it’s vital that the Club promotes and draws out these qualities in those players.

Under such a system, when it is their turn to take on senior responsibilities, those younger players will already have some experience to fall back on, rather than just being thrown in the deep end, or needing to wait until it is very late in their career to take on such responsibilities, because no one else fits the bill. :-\

Newman - maybe - can we please try him in the mid-field -

Agree WP.  They seem to give everyone else a go in there, don’t know why he so rarely seems to get that opportunity.

My only thoughts as to why Newman doesnt get a run in the middle:
+ Frawley sees him as too slow (considering he coaches to make us as SLOW as possible);
+ Frawley likes him being a tagger on small forward pockets/half forwards;

Our current leadership group is:

Campbell - Below average. Legs are sadly gone.
Gaspar - Poor. knee has slowed him down and denied his usual spring..
Ottens - ok. Nice if he had a ruck coach!
Stafford - ok. Injured
Johnson - Good
A. Kellaway - ok before missing 6 weeks. Hasn't done much since coming back.
Tivendale - Below par. Has no influence on the game when we are losing.
Chaffey - Poor year

Not a good sign when only 1 of your 8 nominated leaders is having a good consistent year. Brown, Richo and Joel are of course outside that group.

Next year my leadership group is similar to others but would be based around generational change (No Cambo, Richo, Gas):

Johnson (c), Brown (vc), Cogs, Otto, Stafford, Newman.

I don't see the point of appointing blokes into the leadership group if they aren't suited or up to it. I like TS's idea of a second tier for the younger players.

Speaking of players not doing any harm to their chances for next season.  What about Joel doing his chances of a return to the leadership group for next season no harm.

As hard as it may seem to believe, and after all he has copped over the past two or more seasons, he may even play himself into contention for the role of Captain in 2005, if he continues his recent good form. :o

Just wonder why it’s taken so long to get that sort of footy out of him when most realised, some time ago, that he was capable of playing much better than what he showed the previous two seasons.  Better late than never I suppose.

Going by his very impressive interview on "On the Couch" the other week - I think being dropped from the leadership group and the seniors has stung him into action  ;)

In regards to Joel - if it ain't broke don't fix it. Same goes for Richo. IMO we need generational change and placing Joel and/or Richo back into the leadership group would be Richmond returning to the past. I would much rather a smaller official leadership group based on demonstrated leadership abilities on and off the field than us trying scrape together eight players for the sake of having a eight man leadership group.

I agree with what you say, to a degree, MT.  I was partly looking at it from the point of view that we don’t seem to have that many leaders at the Club.  Not that are all that obvious anyway.  I agree about Richo, but Joel’s 26, so I think, if he has turned the corner, that he would be as big a chance, if not better than some that are or have been in the leadership group in the past.

And even though some of the younger players seem to have leadership qualities, the Club doesn’t seem to push them forward, for whatever reason.  Maybe the new Coach will see things differently and things will now change in that area.  We can only hope.

This year we have Tivendale and Chaffey in the leadership group.  On the basis of what, I’m not sure, other than that they finished high up in the B&F last year.  They certainly don’t seem to have shown much leadership out on the ground.  Not that I’ve seen anyway.

They might train and work hard off the field, but there has to be more to it than that.  For a player to go through what Joel has and to now be playing better football, I think, shows a player that others can look up to and also the strong character he has.
