Struggling Tigers respected: Connolly
June 6, 2007 - 6:33PM | The Age
They have not won a game this season, and sit forlornly at the foot of the AFL ladder, but Richmond will be received like premiers when they arrive at Subiaco this weekend, says Dockers coach Chris Connolly.
On paper, the arrival of the Tigers in Perth would appear to be the perfect tonic to Fremantle's own sickly season, which currently sits at 4-6, two games out of a top eight they were supposed to breeze into.
But Connolly, having already been bitten twice at home this year, says despite the Tigers' lowly standing he will be treating Terry Wallace's strugglers as front-runners not also-rans come Sunday.
"We're treating Richmond like they're the premiership team," Connolly said.
"They're on top of the ladder, they're the premiership team. All efforts are going into them and winning that game.
"They have played really well the last three weeks and have been stiff to not have won those three games.
"We have got to make sure our game is on and make sure we execute our style of play to the best of our ability."
Pavlich's efforts to rebound look likely to be against a former teammate in Graham Polak, who has admitted he had pinpointed this weekend's game and the Pavlich contest before the season started.
Connolly said although he was expecting some Dockers fans to give Polak a harsh reception, he was pleased the 22 year-old had revived his career since leaving WA for the Tigers in the summer.
"You will probably get booed by some people because that is what they do - they boo anything that hasn't got a Fremantle jumper on," Connolly said.
"There was no doubt Graham needed a fresh start, and he has been in good form. He is a good young man, and I am really pleased he has been in top form."

Tigers vow to break their duck
9th June 2007, 10:52 WST
West Australian
Preparing to meet the team on Sunday he could well have been coaching, Richmond assistant Brian Royal has said the Tigers intend to attack Fremantle in a bid to break their 2007 duck.
Following Damian Drum's sacking from the Dockers in 2001, Royal, then an assistant at Melbourne, and Chris Connolly, in a similar role at Hawthorn, were the last two standing in the race to take over at Freo.
With the Dockers eventually plumping for Connolly, Royal is still waiting for a senior post, this week admitting he maintains ambitions to lead his own team after years as an assistant to Terry Wallace.
But on Sunday, Royal said his and Wallace's only focus would be to buck the bookies, win Richmond's first of the year - and put more pressure on Connolly in the process.
"At this stage of the development of the team we really need to try and build a style of football that is going to hold up and be successful in finals football," Royal said.
"You could think the position Richmond are in the moment you have got to protect the scoreboard - but we also need to teach the guys how to play that brand of football.
"We will endeavour to play an attacking brand.
"If Freo do get a jump on us we might have to throw a player behind the ball - but I have got no doubt we will attack to start with."
With the Tigers at odds as generous as $5.50 to upset the Dockers at home, former Freo recruit Graham Polak has taken much of the focus this week on his first return to his old club.
And while Royal agreed Polak was having an outstanding first season at Tigerland, he also defended the form of younger players such as Brett Deledio and Richard Tambling.
"We could not have asked anymore of Graham - he would probably be in our top two or three in our best and fairest if we had the count today," Royal said.
"He has been the ultimate professional around the club, and he has been terrific with our younger guys as well.
"We are heading in the right direction, we just hope the supporters are going to be patient with us. Once we win one game, I think we will string a few together."

We won by 20 goals FF. Billy Nicholls knocked up a lazy 10 from a HFF. Or was that from a KFC lol.
Connolly is Spud-like with his comments.

Thanks mt. :) Sorry I missed it. Hope Richard Lounder played well.
I'd bet our captain was part of the team this time rather than just getting a token few minutes at the end so he could hold up the cup like last time.

No probs FF ;D
They put Sugar on the bench for 3 1/2 quarters and brought Freame on as well just for old time sake.

-
Free to Richo against McPharlin ... no of course ::)
Nice pass Newy in his 100th to Richo :thumbsup. Richo lines up and misses again :scream
-
Inside 50s 5 to 1 our way
-
Scored every time we've gone in but we're wasting every one :banghead
-
Bloody goalkicking :banghead. We could have been 4 goals.
-
Hit outs 5 to 1 Freo
Clearances 3 to 2 Freo
-
Scores?
-
tiges 1.4.10 points
Freo 0
But we've wasted plenty
-
Why didn't Tambo go for goal ???
-
He was on the boundary and centred it probably like he should have I reckon.
-
Ta Moi.
One shot one goal for Freo :banghead. Now Tarrant has it. Thank god he's a dud kick.
-
Free kicks 5 - 0 RFC :shh
-
AFL stats have got Tambo, Polak, Richo and Sugar as the best tiges, is that about right
-
Free kicks 5 - 0 RFC :shh
:rollin
-
Yeah, pretty much, but Tambo stuffed up a simple handball passing it straight to a Dockers player who ran it down for a shot on goal :banghead
But he's doing all right otherwise.
Polak has been good - 7 possies
-
Messy play but Petts goals :gotigers. Nice don't argue from Hyde.
-
After the worst hospital pass you've ever seen to Raines, they managed to get out of it with linkiing handballs under great pressure eventually to Pettifer - GOAL :gotigers
-
Patto is doing really well :clapping. Petts misses :scream
Free kicks 5 - 0 RFC :shh
Can we have these umps every week :lol
-
LOL @ these umps. 7-0.
Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidddddddddddddddddddssssssssssssssssssss :gotigers
-
Contested possessions 27 - 10 RFC
Tuck just nearly put himself in hopsital with going into a pack head first.
Goal Lids :gotigers

Patto is doing really well :clapping. Petts misses :scream

Can we have these umps every week :lol
Nah, the priority picks are more appealing :lol

Goal Lids :gotigers
Woo-Hoo :gotigers
-
Must be 80 metre goal by Newmo :gotigers
-
BTW how as Lids goal, AFL game day live had him taking a contested mark and then giving it off to Tuck before getting a handball receive and then goal
-
Must be 80 metre goal by Newmo :gotigers
:bow take a seat dustin fletcher
-
Wasn't even on the run - just awesome!
-
Amazing goal by Newy :bow :gotigers. We should use the torp more often as we have a few guys like lIds as well that can do it with some consistently.
Lids, Foley, Rainesy, Tuck, King, Hughes and Patto all did well that quarter.
-
Once again awesome goal to Newy, terrific 100th so far :clapping
Polak BOG so far IMO, Freo might start regretting letting him go.
Lids terrific, Raines very good, Hughes and Patto showing very encouraging signs
-
Two easy shots missed :banghead
-
Let's hope Freo keep missing.
Kingsley misses as well :-\ but Freo give it straight back. Foley misses.
-
Rainesy is having a blinder. Not bad for a bloke with a dodgy knee and groin ;).
-
Cleve misses
-
We should be 7 goals up :-\.
Lucky Freo are stuffing up too.
-
Hyde from the pocket lol :gotigers
-
Hydey :thumbsup
-
Bloody turnover gifts Freo a goal :banghead
-
Pavlich just answered Thomas with a handball to a team mate for the goal when he could have easily gone for it himself.
I hope Thomas hasn't inspired him :wallywink
-
Brilliant goal Tambling :bow
-
Our speed is killing them
RFC 44
Freo 18
-
Tamboooooooooooooo gets his second :gotigers. Left them for dead to 40m and bang. We're taking them on and backing ourselves and each other which is great to see.
-
:bow Blingers awesome goal. Keep this up and Buddy will be needing :help :lol
-
Jake King you beauty - great mark :bow
Hydey got cleaned up with an nice elbow! Seems okay
-
Thanks for the advantage ump ::). Held us up when we were away after a free and then from the spoil Freo run it down for a goal.
-
Why go in a circle when you have an open forward line ???. Turnover by Hyde leads to a Freo goal.
-
We're falling down across the half-forward/forward line in the last 10 minutes.
Lucky there. Pav kicked a goal but there was a push in the back in the square :whistle
-
Half-time. 6.9 to 4.8. Freo kicked 3 of the last 4 goals.
We need to regain our run after the break. We slowed down and started going short as a result. Before that we ran them off their legs yet didn't put it on the scoreboard. Bad goalkicking is bad footy Tiges. Missed too many gettable set shots.
Best Tigers: Rainesy, Lids, Polak, King, Foley and Joel. Hyde did well that quarter.
We're getting smashed in the hitouts 7-17 which is no suprise but we've had 40 more possies and 24 more marks. 13-26 in tackles though although Freo has been chasing tail a lot.
-
With regard to Polak, Freo can eat poo, you just traded away a star
-
Petts goals :gotigers. First blood for the half :thumbsup
-
Headland ducks and gets a free and goal. Stupid ump ::)
-
Wayne "Richo" Harmes lol. Kingsley goals :gotigers
-
Foley runs on from the bench and nails Solomon :lol
-
Headcase has 3 this quarter. Scores level.
-
HOO-@#$-RAY Richo finally gets a free. Richo goals. Back up by six :gotigers
-
Making some dumb mistakes now as the pressure has gone up. Percentages under pressure Tiges.
Scores level.
-
Deja Vu seems to be happening each week :banghead
-
Foley to Howat to the square. Petts marks and goals on the line :gotigers. Back up by 5.
-
Turnover by Polak gifts Freo a goal.
-
Sugar was lucky then - pretty hopeless effort
-
Lids getting plenty of hard ball 10 contested possies so far
-
Come on Richo, time to shine!
-
Great team effort - goal to Howat
-
Point down at 3/4 time. Probably a touch lucky as Freo were well on top that quarter.
This is where we need blokes to stand up. Who is going to take this game for us. Richo has been well held. Kingsley has been useless. Tivs will be happy as us supporters have a new player to bag. Tuck got a fair bit of it but can't hit a target. Lids, Newy, Tambo and most of our running players were quiet that quarter.
Hyde, Foley, Joel, Polak (apart from that mistake) and Howat probably our best that quarter.
Howat gets the first of the last. Lids took them on.
-
Newman must have broken ribs otherwise he'd be on the ground I reckon
-
Bugger about Newy :(
-
petts behind one point up :gotigers
-
Tuck injured. Going off.
Down by 11 :(
-
And white injured - one player on the bench
-
Great :( and on a big ground like Subi too.
-
That tackle on Headland. Did he not drop the ball :banghead
-
Better get it together Tiges
-
We just can't score when we go forward yet Freo make the most of their attacks. 17 points down.
-
Gone now. Freo dominating the clearances.
-
Just let another debutant kick a goal :banghead damn you ibbotson lol
-
23 down :banghead
-
stuff Grant Thomas
-
Edwards gets his 2nd from a rare clearance. At least Tuck is not injured and back on.
Freo get another but Tambo runs from 80 to 40 and goals. 17 points. 6 goals to 4 this quarter.
-
hanging in
-
Tambo to Richo and goals. Back to 2 goals.
eff Grant Thomas
What did he say?
-
5 minutes max left, c'mon Tiges
-
I posted a thread about it earlier in the week. Said he wasn't a team player, but more interested in his own performance. Played a pretty good team game today :banghead
-
Blingers extremely good this qtr
-
Edwards gets his 3rd off the ground. 15 points.
Back to 21. 8 goals to 5 this quarter. Game opened up as everyone tired. Our running pressure dried up about 20 minutes into the second. Not having Simmo has killed us again as we got smashed in the clearances in the second half.
Another narrow defeat :P.
-
Simmo please come back next round :pray
-
Polak, Foley, Deledio,
were all excellent
Tambling played his best game for us- hes contribution was spread over the entire game. He has to be signed by the club. The boy will be a player!
the rest were good
we lost coz we make silly mistakes that dont need to happen. Ie- Deledio from the kick in in the last.
Anyway we need the picks. This was another honorable loss.
-
Just felt that the decision making and skills fell away, got to do with the lack of experience and years in the system
-
yeah i agree some of it is very bad at the moment, but thats what you get from young players sometimes when they try and do stuff. Overall today wasnt a bad effort.
-
Good effort by the lads today. The committment was there and I thought the spirit of the team considering results was admirable. I thought the youngsters today showed that with a bit more experience under their belts they could develop into very serviceable AFL players. Its galling to lose narrowly again but there were plenty of positives. Scored 100 points for the second time this season. I wonder if Terry mentioned that in his post match press conference.
-
If we want to be harsh we should have kicked 7 goals in the first quarter which probably would have set up a win. 4.5 was a poor return from the number of shots we had and twice the possession. We nailed the tough and flukey shots but the missed set shots.
Overall it wasn't a bad effort. Probably the best we've played since the Adelaide game. A mostly team effort with a better style of play. Just too young and lack the class to finish off games when they are up for grabs.
