Watched the game last night (I'm in Melb for the week) and was telling the wife wher I stood and saw it all live.

Then read the Age this morning and read where Carey has replaced hart as CHF in the team of the Cenrury a decade on.  Seriously the press has NFI.

Amongst two teams, many of whom are deemed all time champions, Hart and Stewart stood out as a class above.

Not forgetting the week before Hart on one knee came on after half-time when we were 6 goals down and turned the PF.

I've got the 1973 GF on DVD along with the 1980 GF. Totally different footy compared to now. Every kick was to a contest. You can see why it changed as coaches wanted to avoid 50/50 coin tosses of those days for less risky tactics of today.  Blues fans whinge we went the knuckle in that GF but early on Vin Waite went after our smaller blokes. Jezza didn't play Merv Keane enough respect early on. The umps like Sheeds that day.

It was a brutal game at stages. Hard to believe Neil Balme never had anything to answer for sending Southby to lala-land.
"Bones" McGhie was one of my favourite players. I still marvel at how he picked up Kevin Hall and threw him away like a rag doll during the match. Hall is a big bloke (boss of a mate of mine) and was no lightweight.

being a young tacker, did Hafey instrument those plans?

From things I've read about him, about how he used to get into the ears of players pre-game and instill his own brand of enthusiasm, I reckon that has the earmark of GR lol

Doubt it. We just had some very tough players. Mal Brown and Steven Parsons added to it in 1974, Essendon found out just how tough our players were.

Could the VFL report you after the event in those days or if the ump missed it you got away with it?

That side had a few "recycled" players too that we got cheaply in hindsight. McGhie from the Dogs, Sproule from the Bombers and Stewart of course from the Saints. Go Simmo and Polak  :thumbsup.
