Damn - clashes with the storm.
Go for the first half and then olympic park 4 me.

As you say winner plays Willywood.

Have a Richmond mate who follows Willy and will just not give it up.
Says no way he will follow Coburg. I dont really get it.
I understand the old VFL rivalries as I followed it before the AFL got involved.
But htf you can cheer on lica and shaw and whoever over patto hyde jacko etc has got me stumped.

I will be giving them plenty if that one comes to fruition that's 4 sure.

We will smash Port.

Is Howat still eligible to play in the VFL finals? He wasn't listed under those that are eligible on the VFL site.

If not then the 12/10 rule will mean the 12 RFC players this weekend will be McGuane, Moore, Jack, Jacko, Paddy, Cass, Connors, Clever, Krak, JON, Sarge and White.

Basically AFL listed players need to have played 7 VFL games to qualify for the VFL finals. The first week of the finals though is open to all AFL players so that's why Howat played against Geelong.

The actual criteria is long and technical:

21. PARTICIPATION IN FINALS

21.1 Players who have not played at least one (AFL or VFL) Senior or Reserve match in the relevant season shall be ineligible to play in the Senior Grade Finals.

21.2 Players who have played with the AFL Senior team of any AFL Club after the 1st day of July in the relevant season shall be ineligible to play in the VFL Senior or VFL Reserve Grade Finals unless they have played a total of at least seven (7) Senior or Reserve VFL matches in the same season.

21.3 Players who have not played at least two (2) VFL Reserve Grade matches in the relevant season shall be ineligible to play in the VFL Reserve Grade Finals save where immediately prior to selection, a listed player has missed through injury, at least ten (10) consecutive home & away matches of the VFL football season and his club remains active in the senior VFL Finals series.

21.4 Players who have played in more than eight Senior VFL Grade matches shall not be eligible to play in Final Series matches of the VFL Reserve Grade unless they have played in at least six matches of the VFL Reserve Grade.

21.5 Notwithstanding the provisions of Rule 21 when a Club has each of its Senior Grade (AFL or VFL) and Reserve Grade (AFL or VFL) teams engaged on the same day, (or consecutive days) the selection of players in the two teams shall be unrestricted, provided a player has participated in at least one (AFL or VFL) Senior Grade or Reserve Grade match in that relevant season.

21.6 Notwithstanding the provisions of Rule 21 when an AFL Club is still qualified to participate in the AFL Finals Series, all such AFL Club listed players shall be eligible to be selected for a team participating in either the VFL Senior or VFL Reserve grade Finals Series game provided that such player has played at least 1 game in the VFL Senior Grade or missed through injury at least 8 consecutive Home and Away matches of either the AFL or VFL Season.

21.7 Not withstanding the provisions of Rule 21, a minimum of 10 VFL listed players must be selected in the VFL Senior finals team for all VFL Finals matches (excluding VFL Club(s) who do not field a VFL Reserve grade team).

21.8 Not withstanding the provisions of Rule 21.7, should additional AFL listed players qualify to participate in the VFL Final Series, all such AFL listed players will be eligible to be selected for a team participating in the VFL Reserve Grade Finals provided that player has played at least one game in the VFL Senior Grade or missed through injury at least 8 consecutive Home and Away matches of either the AFL or VFL Season.

21.9 Not withstanding the provisions of Rule 21, when an AFL Club is eliminated from the AFL Final Series on the same weekend as the VFL Grand Final, AFL listed players must qualify for selection under Regulation 21.2.

21.10 Not withstanding the provisions of Rule 21, for a VFL Club(s) who do not field a VFL Reserve Grade team in the competition, AFL listed players must qualify players under Regulation 21.2 and must have played not more than 12 AFL games to be eligible to play in VFL finals matches.

21.11 Not withstanding the provisions of Rule 21, for a VFL Club(s) who do not field a VFL Reserve Grade team in the competition, when an AFL Club has completed the AFL Home and Away season or is eliminated from the AFL Final Series, a minimum of 10 VFL listed players must be selected in the VFL Senior finals team for all VFL Finals matches. The balance of the 10 VFL listed players can comprise of AFL veterans listed and AFL rookie listed have qualified under Rule 21.10 and VFL listed players who have qualified under Rule 21.1.

Good news for Coburg because we got killed by Geelong's talls. Silvestor, Moore and McGuane back and suddenly it's a much more competitive backline.

With those ins Coburg's forward and back KP stocks look more settled and solid. The only concern for Coburg is their 2nd ruck. Gus going down has turned out to be a big loss. Now that Jack is back this week alongside Cleve and Paddy up forward they may have to use Sarge in the ruck when Ronaldson is rested. You had to feel for poor Nat Caruso last week against a big lug like Stephen King  :help.

McRae confirmed in EOTT that Howat can't play in the rest of the finals series.

That means the bench for the seniors will be Silvester, N.Caruso, Hill and Gazzo, as they are the 4 not named in the reserves squad.Farrelly is a bit stiff.

That's a strong reserves squad.

I think you're right GB. Harts definitely can't play as there's already 12 RFC players named in the starting 18. The only doubt would be on Silvester given Jack is named at CHB while he is named on the bench.

No Peterson in the ressies squad?

Do players need to play a number of ressies games to qualify for the finals ?
Carl has played 8 VFL ressie and 4 senior VFL games. Looks like he passes the requirement rules to play  - Sections 21.3, 21.4 and 21.8 - if I'm reading it correctly.

Coburg has been the better side but silly turnovers in our defensive half gifted Port 4 of the 5 goals they kicked that quarter.

McGuane  - best of the RFC boys. Solid in defence. As has Moore.
Whitey and Cleve have been good
Krak didn't get much of it that quarter after a good first quarter.
Paddy and Jacko have been alright.
Cass has been alright too. Been taking the kick-ins. Made one bad turnover where he handballed straight to a Port player 25m out.
Connors hasn't done much.
Jack hasn't got much of it but when he has he's made the most of it.
Schulz was better that quarter.
JON - oh dear  :-\

Disposals:
White 15
Paddy 12
Moore 11
Hughes 8
Jackson 8
Schulz 5

Phil Cleary saying Jack shouldn't be waving his hands up in the air after a goal a la Franklin-style at this stage of the game.

3XX 3 commentators:
3. Krakouer, 2. Riewoldt, 1. N.Caruso
3. Moore, 2. McGuane, 1. Jackson
3. Jackson, 2. Moore, 1. Riewoldt

Moore won ABC's BOG. 15k, 5h, 8m, 1 goal.

Disposals:
Jackson 23, 2 goals 5 behinds
Neville 21
Shelton 21
White 21
Moore 20
Paddy 18
Connors 16
Jack 9, 4 goals

Moore and McGuane were terrific in defence. Share the top 3 on ground with Nat Caruso IMO.

Krak showed his polish and creativity at this level.

Jack is deadly. You've got to love him. Andy Collins encourages his outgoing demeanour.

Jacko was great especially in the second half with his run through the middle and pushing forward. Could have kicked a bag too as he kicked 5 behinds.

Cleve won't get many plaudits but I thought he was very good today. The most pleasing thing was him involving himself in the game and not just being a kick and mark forward.

Whitey was good especially in the first half. His ankle stuffed him up in the second half but a gutsy effort to keep going. Lucky we were so far in front in the last that we could rest him in reaidness for next week.

Paddy was alright although surprised he ended up with 18 possies as he wasn't too noticable on the tv.

Connors was okay. Not his best game IMO but solid.

Cass was solid too. Did some nice things but he was better last week.

I thought the only disappoints today were Schulz and JON. Sarge is frustrating. One minute he does something courageous and works hard and then the next he's playing from behind and allowing his defender to waltz away too easily. JON is just close your eyes stuff when near or with the footy :help.

Team wise we finished strongly which was good to see after fading last week. I'm feeling quitely confident although Coburg can play better than they did today in the first 3 quarters. We knew we had Port's measure all day and probably played too cute at times. Be great if Coburg could win a flag. Andy Collins said after the game we're going for it  :thumbsup.

Shultz' biggest problem is that he tries to mark on his chest far too often.

Richo is another culprit of this. Rule 101 of being a forward is that you should mark with your hands out in front. It makes it so much harder for the defender to spoil.

I cant believe players at this level cant do this.

Krakouer sparks a Tiger rout in semi-final
Chris Walker | September 10, 2007

COBURG has moved a step closer to its first VFL premiership since 1989, defeating Port Melbourne 21.16 (142) to 10.12 (72) in the second semi-final at TEAC Oval yesterday.

In swirly conditions, the Tiger engine took time to get started, remaining goalless for the first 17 minutes of the game. Andrew Krakouer then provided the spark with two goals in quick succession and Coburg was up and running. Slotting three more unanswered goals before quarter-time, the Tigers opened up a 22-point first-quarter lead.

Port Melbourne lifted in the second quarter but was unable to convert it to scoreboard pressure as both sides snagged five majors for the term.

After a third quarter in which the two sides again broke even, the Tigers used the final term to build confidence and momentum for next week's preliminary final against Williamstown.

Krakouer kicked a seemingly impossible goal through heavy traffic and backed it up with another to make it four for the day. From then on it was all Coburg, which booted nine goals to the Borough's three for the quarter.

Richmond-listed Kelvin Moore had 21 possessions and pulled down two spectacular grabs. Jack Riewoldt was dangerous up forward and scored four goals from nine kicks. Daniel Jackson had 23 possessions and kicked 2.5.

Andy Collins is confident Coburg can break its flag drought. "I think we can definitely go all the way. It's an excellent group of players and we rely on each other. Any given player can stand up on game day," said the coach.

The Tigers' Alistair Neville, who collected 21 possessions yesterday, is favourite for tonight's J. J. Liston Medal to be awarded to the season's best and fairest player.

Neville has had an outstandingly consistent season in the Coburg midfield and was awarded the Frank Johnson Medal in the state representative match against WA earlier this year.

Coburg cruise to preliminary final
10 September 2007   Herald Sun
Geoff Poulter

THE COBURG Tigers showed they should be worthy opponents for rested Williamstown next weekend after their clinical elimination of Port Melbourne in yesterday's second semi-final.

Coburg was rarely threatened in the TEAC Oval clash to win by 70 points - 21.16 (142) to 10.12 (72).

Port was gritty and did not lose without a fight, but in the end lacked sufficient class and was overwhelmed in a 9.5 to 3.2 last quarter.

Most of the 12 players Coburg fielded from AFL affiliate Richmond were prominent at various stages, with defender Kelvin Moore dragging in two classic high marks to highlight the first half.

Daniel Jackson was lively and damaging around the ground and Matt White, Travis Casserly and Daniel Connors showed plenty of zip and determination.

Andrew Krakouer, an exquisite shot for goal, and the bouncy Jack Riewoldt both kicked four goals to keep the pressure on the Port defence.

"I was really pleased with the really good team effort," Coburg coach Andrew Collins said. "We finished the final quarter right out.

"To finish the game off was a really strong sign for us and we had a strong side in.

"Our reserves won as well so it was a great day for the club.

"We are in a preliminary final with a chance to get into a grand final.

"It's a big week; that's an understatement, isn't it?"

Collins expects to have virtually a full list from which to choose to play Williamstown on Sunday.

"Nick Carnell was a bit sore (after last week's clash with Geelong) and we decided not to risk him in this game. He will be back next week."

Coburg also had other high possession-getters among its VFL-listed players with cool heads Paul Shelton and Alister Neville again inspiring.

Port, with no AFL content, improved a lot this season and performed well to reach the second week of the finals.

John Baird battled hard in defence on Jay Schulz and David Fanning worked strongly in the ruck.

Experienced David Robbins and David Spriggs were outnumbered in the end by the class of the Coburg midfield.

Take 2.  Got cut off.  But thanks again MT.

To the questions;

1.  Nat Caruso - Rookie list if Petts is traded ?
The small size of both Carusos goes against them Darth. The reason why neither were drafted or even rookied last year (Fort won two Morrish (best U18) medals). Nat didn't play HFF yesterday either. Played mainly on-ball.

2.  Jacko - % effectiveness of the disposals when in general play, particularly in heavy centre square traffic ??
I wouldn't say his % effectiveness was any different to what it is when Jacko is playing for Richmond. Just got more of it and in damaging spots running forward of centre and across the forward 50. He could have kicked 5.2 really. IIRC he hit the post twice. He won plenty of footy due to his hard running rather than busting out of heavy traffic although he teamed well in traffic. Jacko would say have the ball at CHB, pass it off and then you'd see him get it straight back on the wing or across HF.

3.  Matt Whites ankle - does it require post-season surgery ???
Going by what Andy Collins says it sounds as thought Matty will be fine for next week. If it was anything serious I'd doubt they let him play on after half-time like he did. He was only pulled off once the game was sewn up and sat on the bench with the ankle iced.

4.  Kel Moore - any upside greater than a 24 year old 3rd tall defender ????
All you can say was he was great yesterday for Coburg. Best game he's played in his 4-5 years on our list. Possibly won't save his AFL career though as space on our list needs to be freed up if 3 of our rookies are promoted.

5.  Silvester - a mature age Rookie chance ?????
Silvester is still only 22 (turns 23 end of Jan) so I think he's still underage to be a normal rookie. The problem is 3 other Vic clubs at least are sniffing around so we'd have to pick him up in the National draft if we wanted him.

2nd Semi Final Match Report Vs. Port Melbourne
coburgtigers.com.au

Coburg showed they are the real deal on Sunday with a solid 70 point victory against the Boroughs. A strong four quarter effort saw the Burgers win every quarter, and a lot of positives will be taken into next weeks do or die game against Williamstown.

The ground was in perfect condition, and although there was a slight breeze, goals were easy to come by at either end.

The Burgers kicked with the mild breeze during the first term and built a strong four goal lead and although Port had a couple of little run-ons, the margin never went below the four goal mark for the rest of the match.

Port kicked the first goal of the game in the first two minutes, but that was the last hurrah for them. It took until the 17 minute mark for Coburg to kick their first through Andrew Krakouer, but it opened the flood gates and the Burgers kicked another four goals in very quick time. Logan Hill continued on last weeks fine form to goal, followed by another to Patrick Bowden. Nat Caruso then kicked goal of the day as he intercepted a Port kick near the wing, took a bounce and kicked a bomb from 65m. Matt White and Kelvin Moore were fantastic holding up the backline in the first term, they had 18 touches between them and stopped many Borough forward surges. The Burgers ended the first term 22 points up.

¼ Time: Coburg 5.2 (32) Port Melbourne 1.4 (10)

It took only 30 seconds for a Paul Shelton clearance to end in a Jay Schultz goal in the second quarter. Jack Riewoldt then added his first and made it seven in a row for the Burgers. Midway through the term Riewoldt kicked another and set up Cleve Hughes a minute later; Kelvin Moore then ran forward and kicked accurately as Coburg shot out to a 41 point lead. However credit should go to Port Melbourne as they kicked the next few goals and cut the margin back to 22 points at the main break.

Luke McGuane was superb in the backline; his skills were very creative and ran around opponents with ease.

½ Time: Coburg 10.5 (65) Port Melbourne 6.7 (43)

Coburg seemed to take the foot off the gas just a little in the third term kicking only two goals, although the backline was again superb allowing Port only a single major. Port full forward David Pitt had a very off target day finishing with 0.6 for the match.

Nat Caruso and Daniel Jackson both lifted in the third term, while Daniel Connors moved forward and kicked a smart goal.

Coburgs back half was strengthened this week with the return of Jarrod Silvester from a hamstring injury. Jarrod has been very solid all year at full back and again held down the defensive role well on Sunday.

¾ Time: Coburg 12.11 (83) Port Melbourne 7.10 (52)

Daniel Jackson kicked the first of the final quarter, followed by another freak goal to Andrew Krakouer, that shutout any chance of a Port victory. Krakouer made the most of slender situations all day and ended with four skillful goals for the match.

The Burgers added 9.5 for the quarter and simply blew the Borough away. The Burger players shared the goals around nicely and had twelve contributors on the day. Matt White, Luke McGuane and Kelvin Moore were fantastic in the back half, while Moore also added a couple of screamers and a goal to his usual defensive role. Andrew Krakouer and Jack Rielwoldts defensive pressure in the forward line was superb, while both finished with 4 goals a piece as well.

Paul Shelton and Daniel Jackson dominated around the ground, with Sheltons clearance work excellent, while Jackson marked well and finished with 2 goals.

Coburg now play Williamstown on Sunday at TEAC Oval, Port Melbourne. The game starts at 1:10 and will also be televised live on the ABC, with the winner through to the Grand Final.
The last time the two sides met the Burgers got up by eleven goals, but finals pressure will bring the two teams closer to one another and a great tussle will take place.

Reserves

After a shaky first quarter the Burger reserves kicked twelve goals to three in a spectacular performance that puts them straight into the Grand Final in two weeks time. Leading by 3 goals at three quarter time the Burgers then added another six in the final term to run over the Borough by 45 points. Like the seniors the goals were shared around evenly with twelve burger players chipping in. Myles Sewell, Steven Foster and Damien Rayson were the standouts for the Burgers, but overall it was another fantastic team effort.

The coaching staff and players will now be able to sit back and watch Williamstown and Port Melbourne battle it out on Sunday to see who they will take on in the Grand Final the following week.
