We'll give it 'a red-hot crack': Riewoldt
9:34 AM Wed 19 September, 2007
for richmondfc.com.au
EXCITING young Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt says the Geelong VFL team he will be facing in the grand final this weekend as part of the Coburg Tigers is “a formidable outfit”.
But he reckons the rejuvenated and in-form Tigers’ outfit is just the side for the job.
“This is what the VFL guys and the AFL guys at our club who have been playing VFL have been playing for all season,” Riewoldt said.
“At the moment we are playing some of the best footy we have played all year and blokes are really gelling together over the finals series and we’ll give it a red hot crack.”
It’s no wonder Riewoldt enters the big game with such confidence. After being held goalless in the Tigers’ second qualifying final against Geelong three weeks ago, he bounced back with four-goal bags against Port Melbourne and Williamstown.
“My game has revolved around the back line and the midfield playing well,” he said.
“The delivery I am getting is some of the best delivery I have had all year, so a lot of my success can be credited to a very strong midfield.”
This weekend’s VFL grand final will top off an impressive debut season at Punt Road for the Tasmanian in which he managed to clock up eight AFL games.
The confident 18-year-old says the club’s youthful and enthusiastic environment is one of the major reasons he has been able to successfully make the transition from VFL side Tasmania, where he played last season, to Coburg.
As for his transition from VFL to AFL football, Riewoldt highlights the efforts of assistant coach Jade Rawlings and team mate Matthew Richardson.
“Jade Rawlings and Matthew they have been the two big keys in my ‘coming of age’, as I like to call it, as a footballer.
“Jade has been there for me the last two years and whenever I have needed his help,” Riewoldt said.
“Then, on the ground, there is no better mentor for a tall forward to have than Matthew Richardson.
“He is pretty dirty on me if I do not fly for the ball and just really wants me to get in there and have a crack, and he’s always in my ear about giving it 100 per cent.”
With a VFL grand final just days away Riewoldt says he is eager to finish the year off on a high with Coburg, then quickly turn his attention to a bigger and better season with Richmond next year.
“I really want to build on my start to my career with Richmond next year, and if not play double the amount of games I played this year, play all 22 games and cement my spot in the side,” he said.

Gotta love this kid!
-
It looked as though Cass was in casuals (green top) at Coburg training tonight walking around the boundary with Matty White (who was in Coburg kit). Hard to recognise them in red and navy blue :-\. McGuane also didn't train with the main group. He just did some stretching around the Heatley Stand goals. The rest of the Richmond boys who played against Willy trained fully. Very vocal and a good vibe. So I don't think there'll be any changes to the senior Coburg side. I didn't notice Harts either but I was watching the senior Coburg group rather than the ressies.

Ditto. Great that cubs like Jack and Connors exude confidence :thumbsup.

So much for Richmond's midfield eh Jack :lol

VFL Record - Grand Final Preview
Cats look unstoppable
Geelong has firepower to shoot down young Tigers.
Geelong, riding a seven-game winning streak, including two victories over its Grand Final foe, is a red-hot favourite to today deny the Coburg Tigers’ bid to end their 18-year premiership drought.
The Cats have ruthlessly disposed of opponents throughout the season, with an emphatic 50-point average winning margin from its 16 wins. Included among those is the 37-point win against Coburg at Skilled Stadium in round 17 and a 31-point victory in the recent qualifying final.
Searching for their first flag since they defeated Williamstown at Windy Hill in 1989, the Coburg Tigers enter the Grand Final on a high after a confidence-boosting victory against the Seagulls. However, the side must somehow quell Geelong’s all-round strength.
The Cats’ ability to continually apply scoreboard pressure has been at the heart of their success. The club has kicked a competition-high 15 scores of 15-plus goals, and, nine times, including both finals wins, it has booted 20-plus goals.
The concern for Coburg Tigers coach Andy Collins is that Geelong doesn’t rely on a solitary avenue to goal. Todd Grima, who topped the club goalkicking with 50 goals, has kicked just four majors in the finals, but this hasn’t stopped Geelong piling on 46 goals during that time.
The Cats had 16 individual goalkickers during their two finals wins, with their goal scoring avenues stretching to midfielders James Byrne, Jason Davenport, Ryan Gamble, Brent Prismall and ruckman Steven King.
Coburg’s prospects hinge on its ability to limit the effectiveness of King, should he play in the VFL Grand Final. King’s dominance at the centre bounces and stoppages has provided the Cats’ midfield with silver service, and the big man is set to come up against Coburg Tigers captain Travis Ronaldson, who was similarly dominant in his club’s preliminary final success.
King was a clear winner when the pair met in the qualifying final, but Ronaldson, third in the 2007 Liston Trophy, has lifted himself and his teammates to new heights throughout the season.
The battle of the midfield will be just as pivotal. Byrne is clearly the best player in the TRUenergy VFL, as evidenced by his Liston Trophy success, but Coburg Tigers counterpart Alister Neville is also a quality player. Neville won the Frank Johnson Medal given to the best player in the VFL’s win against Western Australia
earlier in the season, and was outstanding in the club’s triumph over Williamstown.
Both Byrne and Neville have huge engines, which enables them to get to so many contests and make an impact. However, it’s unlikely the two will go head-to-head, with Collins likely to employ Nick Carnell to again shadow Byrne, a role he thrived on in the qualifying final.
While that is comforting for Collins, the concern is that Geelong was still able to surge clear in the last quarter to win comfortably. But it should be remembered that Coburg did not have the services of Richmond’s Daniel Jackson, Luke McGuane, Jack Riewoldt, and Kelvin Moore as well as Jarrod Silvester, who was named in the
TRUenergy VFL Team of the Year, in the qualifying final. All were outstanding in the Tigers’ past two wins.
Jackson, an effective stopper at AFL level, could be used on Byrne, Brent Prismall or Ryan Gamble. However, Byrne is just one of many prime movers in the Geelong midfield. Prismall, Gamble, Davenport and Jay Cheep not only have won plenty of possessions, but have been dangerous when drifting into attack.
Meanwhile, the Coburg Tigers gained the ascendancy last week when Fortunato Caruso, Joe Gazzo, Paul Shelton, Matthew White and Carnell took advantage of Ronaldson’s dominance. The challenge for the Coburg players is to reproduce last week’s performance on the biggest stage of the season.
Caruso and Gazzo are still in their teens in their first VFL season and Carnell is a second-year youngster, while Shelton is one of the few Coburg players with more than 50 VFL games under his belt.
Geelong has a distinct edge in experience. King, a veteran of 192 AFL games, heads the list, while Charlie Gardiner, David Johnson, Henry Playfair and Kane Tenace, should he play, have all run out in more than 50 AFL games. Also, Geelong has 11 players from last year’s VFL Grand Final.
On the other side of the ledger, the Coburg Tigers have just two Richmond players with 50-plus AFL games’
experience – Andrew Krakouer and Patrick Bowden. Krakouer has the ability to make something happen seemingly out of nothing and can be shackled for much of a match, only to produce an explosive burst of brilliance.Bowden is another mercurial player. He reads the play so well and his versatility allows him to be used in a variety of roles.
Both clubs have potent attacks and play with flair. Geelong has exciting youngster Tom Hawkins, the experienced Gardiner, Grima and the versatile Tom Lonergan to call upon up forward. The Cats can also use Henry Playfair – resolute at centre half-back against North Ballarat – in attack, along with Matthew Spencer in a key position.
The Coburg Tigers will welcome McGuane, Moore and Silvester into their defence this week, and all three have big roles to play.
Jay Schulz, Jack Riewoldt, Cleve Hughes and Bowden are all focal points, with Riewoldt particularly effective during the finals series. Playfair is likely to take Hughes, while Lonergan or Spencer could man up on Schulz or Riewoldt.
These are just some of the small battles in an intriguing duel that sees Geelong well placed to emerge with the coveted VFL premiership.

What's the go with Cleve Hughes.
Built like a Ferrari, plays like a Datsun.

That's true tigersalive both can play but out of the eight named on the extended bench four are named in the ressies side as well meaning they are the likely ones to be cut. Cleve is one of those four.

Tenace, Hunt add class to Cats
22 September 2007 Herald Sun
Geoff Poulter
THE Coburg Tigers face the daunting task of trying to upset what looks the best "paper" line-up in recent VFL history in tomorrow's grand final at Princes Park.
Geelong, a hot flag favourite for several weeks, has selected 14 AFL-listed players and five AFL rookies in a powerful unit which also contains 2007 Liston Trophy winner James Byrne.
Coburg has improved through the finals and strengthened its side after its 31-point loss to the Cats in the qualifying final.
But Geelong could also be better with the inclusion of Kane Tenace and Sam Hunt after hamstring injuries.
The Burgers are young, willing and spirited and will be competitive but it's hard to see them controlling the Cats for the whole game.
Coburg coach Andrew Collins said coaching staff had been devising a new plan to try and overcome the challenge.
"We need to give them something different, so we will be structuring up a bit differently," Collins said.
"We have a plan and we'll see how that goes."
Collins understands the size of the task confronting his players
"What a spoil of riches they have, 19 (AFL) listed players," he said.
Coburg will have a maximum of 12 AFL-listed players from its affiliate Richmond.
Collins expects the ruck clash between Steven King and Travis Ronaldson to have a bearing on the outcome.
"Their midfield is strong-running, so the midfield clashes are very important," Collins said.
"King versus Ronaldson, the old bull versus the young bull.
"He'll play the game of his life and then they can bring on (back-up ruck Trent) West and he is not a slouch either.
"Ronaldson is very smart and has the heart of a lion.
"And they have got to watch our forwards. We've got Jay Schulz and Jack Riewoldt."

Bit harsh.
Schulz was very good last week - have a look at the tape - see his work rate at keeping the ball inside the Burger 50m zone - which wea sone of his main tasks. His job just isn't about kicking goals :shh
-
Good luck Coburg today.
I was gonna go but I've got this massive cold, and I would only whinge every five seconds if I went lol
I just put a bet on them though.
Centrebet have got Geelong $1.30 and Coburg $3.40.
Well done to everyone down there who've got them this far. A well run club :-)

Hughes doing just enough but in the VFL ressies it should be domination for him.
Yep especially with Coburg dominating. Hearing it on radio though it's hard to know what off the ball work Cleve is doing. Commentators praising him saying he hasn't dropped his head after being dropped back to the VFL ressies.
Cleve gets his 4th just as we're talking about him and then assist to Mullins.
100 - 36

Tas is playing. Just passed it to Cleve who gets his 5th. 5.2 for Cleve today.

Congrats to Coburg ressies. Cleve did his job which is good to hear.
Let's hope the Coburg seniors can make it a double :thumbsup.

-
richmond listd players not giving a yelp except for jackson and moore. whats up with jack riewodlt? play in front and you might get a kick.
-
Agree tiger03. Would say that about all our forwards. Jack has had a shocker so far. Schulz is trying but is being forced wide.
Not enough Burgers working hard enough off the ball and expecting others to do the work.
Nat Caruso off to hospital with a compound fracture to his finger.

That was not 50 but the way we're not switched on we deserve to be punished.

3 Richmond players on the bench says it all. Schulz, Cass and JON.
Coburg have brought their worst game to the Granny.

Unfortunantely it could get uglier MT.
They look slow lethargic and uninterested.

Yep so true HT74. Geelong are playing with Coburg :(

-
Yep so true HT74. Geelong are playing with Coburg :(
Cats have become our bogey team over the last 20 years at all levels. :-\
It seems we seem to save our worst for Geelong. :'(
-
game was lost at selection table. You cant have blokes like Hughes, Huy, Anderson and afew others in the ressies. Anyway we are rubbish today. Theres no elite talent to bring on from coburg except for Conners- and thats it.
Geelong has some nice players at reserves level who would comfortably get senior games at Punt Rd.
-
Coburg might be down to just two on the bench with Matty White's ankle flaring up again.
3/4 time
Coburg 1.2 4.5 4.6-30
Geelong 3.5 5.13 12.19-91

-
i know you cant judge someone on one game, but krak is a joke. six years in the system and he still cant play midfield. who is at fault krak or the coaching staff?
-
Krakouer knows his going back to WA cya unfit wont work hard loser
Shultz = terrible player stuff him off as above
Oakley- Nicholls who said he can play football his nothing but a stuffin wank not even VFL standard :rollin
White = delist
Silvester = pfft
Conners = is a showbag its all about him, his not a team player
whoever coaches the backline down at Richmond stuff him off now
Moore has earned his spot cant see why he was moved to forward our backline is being cut up
Jackson is a team player trying his heart out
but in all they were never gunna beat a AFL trained side like Geelong
well done for making the GF but its terrible watching kicks that kids could kick better
-
Krak finally gets Coburg's 5th.
-
totally agree
-
watch JON worst football player l ever seen drafted whatever anyone seen in this loser has got me he cant even read the play
stuff HIM OFF
-
he is no top ten, thats for sure
-
I had hopes for JON and Riewoldt- gee whiz ... we're in trouble with our top picks i reckon.
-
JON should play forward lol. Gets a goal on the run from 50. 44 - 112
-
Nice goal by JON on the run from 50 but he has had alot of missing in action mates.
I would rather keep a 19 yo and give him another year than reward guys like P Bowden
Schulz who have been in the system for at least 5 years and have shown SFA.
-
Geelong has some players at reserves level who would get games at Richmond easily.
-
I had hopes for JON and Riewoldt- gee whiz ... we're in trouble with our top picks i reckon.
lol nothing like reactionary tiger supporters..
-
Geelong has some players at reserves level who would get games at Richmond easily.
Just goes to show what an injury free or minimal injuries to your squad can do.
A full strength team both at reserves and seniors level.
-
Final score
Coburg 1.2 4.5 4.6 7.10-52
Geelong 3.5 5.13 12.19 17.24-126
Goals: Jackson 2, Connors, Krakouer, Oakley-Nicholls, Hill, Gazzo
-
It was the lack of hard running, 1%ers and basic footskills that killed us. It's unbelievable that for guys who train all the time can't hit a teammate 25m away :help. With mistake after mistake we just couldn't generate any run or structure.
It's hard to single out poor individuals as most Burgers were. Only Moore and maybe Jacko came to play out of the RFC players.

As I have said before, both Schultz and Jarrod Oakley-Nichols wont make it.
We are basically wasting spots on the list""hoping "" these two will be regulars. cold facts, they wont and they are far from it. People talk about trading Schultz ::) Who would want him.
As for JON, can he ever hit a target ? Even the commentators were laughing :lol

yep it was embarrassing watching players at that level making mistakes
its even a bigger joke when they are Richmond listed players
just goes to show our recruiters are not upto the standards as well
stuffin Richmond is so far below level on everything they spin us all poo its a insult asking us for money to watch them

If the Eagles could get pick 29 in a strong draft for McDougall then you'll be surprised what some clubs desperate for a KPP will pay for one. I don't believe JON will make it either but our recruiters by taking him with a first round pick have put him in a situation where he's being mocked. Mind you JON missing targets didn't stand out today because his teammates were just as shocking. Our kick-ins and kicks outside defensive 50 were so woeful it was tragic. Grubber after grubber :banghead.

Mate, he should never had been in the draft in the first place, poor kick and bad decision making.

Agree about that (rookie at best) but all I'm saying is JON didn't draft himself.
-
Geelong were just too big, too strong, too experienced and too good today.
What a year from Coburg though. :)
Wooden spoon favourites that made it to the GF. Well done on a fantastic year that was way, way above expectations. :thumbsup

Agree, Rookie who would have lasted one year.
We have delisted better players than him in the past.

Had we not drafted him he would have still been drafted , possibly in the first round...
As disappointing as he has been he is still very young and had plenty of injury problems..
Still haven't completely given up hope..

HB,
Don't talk sense. BTW: Most of the over the top, emotive BS about one player was similarly aimed at Daniel Jackson and Luke McGuane as late as half way through the just completed season. Patience and understanding teh development process is in short supply on Internet forums.
I think the issue is enough development coaches. JON has the tools. He just needs fitness and confidence. He is only 19 after all.

That's true FF. Given Coburg came from rock bottom a couple of years ago, to end up finishing senior runners-up and ressie premiers is a terrific effort by all those at Coburg. It was just such a disappointing day. We just never got going (or weren't allowed to) and Nat Caruso going off seem to coincide with the floodgates opening for Geelong.

If McGuane and Jacko were first round picks they too would still be copping it. Their footskills skill need work especially Luke. As mid-late draft picks the scrutiny is less than if they went top 10 like JON. HB is correct to say another club would have taken him in the first round as he was rated in most phantom drafts in the top 20 so others rated JON highly too. However IMO a top 10 pick shouldn't have so many flaws that need working on as JON does. Footskills/kicking technique being the first thing you judge a youngster by. The modern game requires elite footskills. Alright skill doesn't cut it. If we truly don't want to accept mediocrity anymore then that's where we need to demand the bar be set.

I still think that a lot of JON's problems arise from lack of confidence, lack of self-belief, and inability to handle pressure. These things can change, sometimes very quickly, especially in one so young.
Coburg played poorly in difficult conditions. They are a very young side, and they cracked under the pressure of the "big occasion". The big difference between the teams was the level of experience, and the fact that they had 18 AFL players versus 11. That was too much of an advantage.
As FF said, what a great year for Coburg, way ahead of expectations. They should be congratulated.

Struth that's 2 scary posts right there - far too much logic :gobdrop
Yes it was a disppointing day and a number of blokes didn't play well but kudos to them for getting there.
Coburg has had a sensational season and so have the RFC kids who have played there. They will learn from yesterday.
It was a bad day - sadly it was on the biggest day of the year but it happens.

Exactly FF & MT.
Yes Nat's injury was a shocker - like Coburg's day. Saw him at the after match - compound dislocation - the bone went through the skin = OUCH Courageous kid Nat Caruso, ditto his brother Fort :thumbsup

Andy Collins has signed a 3-year deal with West Adelaide.
SEN spoke to Andy today and he told them that he would recommend the Casey Scorpion coach (I think it's Peter Banfield) as an ideal replacement for him at Coburg.

The Werribee Banner is saying AFL Victoria will soon announce that next year's VFL Grand Final will be held at the Telstra Dome, on the Friday night before the AFL Grand Final.
