Some promising preseason form by Natanui and Yarran for Swan Districts seniors.
Swans won 15.13 (103) to 12.13 (85) with star junior Chris Yarran booting five goals in a thrilling B.O.G. display.
State 18s ruckman Nicholas Naitanui showed glimpses of why he is touted as being a chance to be drafted in the top echelon of juniors this year and his ruck work after quarter time proved to be handy for Swans.
As an aside Krak played as well.

If we have an opportunity to grab Natanui I hope we don't. I get the impression that he is a project player and our history of player development doesn't fill me with enough confidence to take the risk.
Worst case scenario on-field in 2008 should give us pick 1 and 2.
Rich and Hurley for me at this stage.

Fijian flyer Naitanui thrills clubs
Trevor Woodhouse and Jay Clark | March 09, 2008
NICHOLAS Naitanui will bring an athleticism so far unseen in the AFL when he is picked, probably at No. 1, in this year's national draft. So powerful is the 17-year-old's leap, he could represent his native Fiji in the Beijing Olympics high jump.
He cleared the island nation's qualifying mark of 2m at a school athletics meet last year.
Naitanui also left University of Western Australia testers flabbergasted, jumping higher than their equipment could record at a routine screening.
He has the sort of talent that prompted one AFL recruiter to say, tongue-in-cheek, "He is almost worth tanking the whole season".
Naitanui will play in the WAFL this season with Swan Districts, but club officials did not want to comment on plans for him this season. Spectators last weekend watched the draft ace turn a WAFL game on his own, pinch-hitting in the ruck.
West Coast recruiting manager Trevor Woodhouse said he could not think of another player like Naitanui, who is 196cm but growing.
"He is very exciting, because I can't see how anyone can outjump him, I seriously can't," Woodhouse said.
"He's rucked against the Kreuzers of the world, and the other 199-201cm ruckmen, and he nearly clears them by a foot."
For someone his height, Naitanui's ground skills and feverish second and third efforts are also impressive.
According to Champion Data, he was the No. 1 hitout winner at the 2007 under-18 championships, where he averaged 11 possessions and five hard-ball gets a game.
Naitanui is also highly marketable, with dread-locked hair and an exuberant playing style.
"Being Fijian, with the different hairstyle, and jumping on people's heads -- you'd think he will be a team favourite wherever he ends up," Woodhouse said.
"They've always got a long way to go, but at this stage he looks like someone who has got their head screwed on, and he is a nice kid."

He's probably too small for AFL but good to see Freezer's son Josh in the bests again.
-
shouldnt discount at this stage because hes been in the bests often, if he has enough speed, maybe he becomes a late pick in the auction scenario and we try and develop him as a small defender.

He could be another Fortunato Caruso though. Regularly in the bests at U18 level but too small for AFL.

Corey's ghost sighted
Sam Edmund | May 26, 2008
Four years after Corey McKernan retired from AFL football, his younger brother Shaun strutted his stuff for Victoria Metro in the opening Division 1 game of the under-18 national championships.
There might be 17 years between them but, such is their similarity, observers could have been excused for thinking they had been transported back in time.
McKernan, 17, is 196cm and weighs 95kg, and like Corey is blessed with athleticism and agility.
The North Melbourne supporter said his 34-year-old brother had nurtured his development.
"He's always there and offers me plenty of tips," McKernan said.
"I reckon it's helped me a fair bit, even going into the (North Melbourne) rooms after the games and seeing what the boys went through and how much time they put into it.
"That was a big help, seeing that sort of stuff."
The ruckman, who spent time forward, had 11 possessions, six marks, 13 hitouts and kicked two goals in yesterday's last-second win over Victoria Country.
Metro forward Jack Watts marked strongly and kicked his fourth goal on the final siren to snatch the 12.4 (76) to 11.7 (73) win.
"I love playing in the ruck, just jumping and running all the time," McKernan said.
"I don't mind going forward either."
He said playing on the MCG in front of an army of AFL club recruiters, who will determine his future later this year, was not an issue.
"I don't think any of us are worried about the recruiters, we're just here to play for Vic Metro," he said.
"Obviously we all have our own goals to play really good but it's a team thing.
"This week we've come together and realised we're playing for Victoria, we're not playing for ourselves.
"You know it's (draft) coming but I haven't thought about it all that much. Obviously it would mean a fair bit. Ever since I started playing footy it's been my goal to play AFL."
Thirty-five other players shared that goal at the MCG yesterday under the high-pressure gaze of AFL scouts.
Watts, Michael Hurley, Jackson Trengove and Xavier Gotch, the son of former Fitzroy player Brad Gotch, were excellent for Metro while Nick Suban, Steele Sidebottom, Tom Rockliff and Nic Heyne, who took a one-handed mark of the day, enhanced their reputations for Country.

Season-ending injury for top draft hope
Matt Burgan
afl.com.au
3:40 PM Sun 08 June, 2008
VIC METRO young-gun Jackson Trengrove will miss the rest of the season with a knee and hamstring injury sustained during a recent training session.
Trengrove, a 196cm tall defender/ruckman from the Calder Cannons, is one of the most highly rated players in this year’s NAB AFL under 18 championships, and a top 10 draft prospect.
AIS/AFL Academy high performance manager Alan McConnell is confident Trengrove will bounce back in time for the October NAB AFL Draft Camp.
“[The injury happened] in a mock pressure situation training drill with Metro on Thursday evening,” McConnell told afl.com.au.
“He’s ruptured the lateral ligament in the knee and torn the hamstring from the bone, so it’s actually a break of the bone that’s caused the attachment to come free.
“He’ll be operated on Tuesday next week to deal with both of those matters.
“The prognosis is good, provided that there’s no surprises when the surgeon gets in – they expect 100 per cent recovery and about a three-month rehab, so we’d hope he’d be ready to do something by draft camp time at this stage.”

Poor kid. Ken Fletcher rated Trengrove as highly a Cotch the other day on the radio. Hopefully he does make a full recovery. Doing a hammy from the bone doesn't sound too good though. Could be a bargin pick if clubs are nervous about him coming back from the injury and let him slip down the draft order.

'Basketballer' moves into top draft contention
Jake Niall | July 1, 2008
FROM early this season, it has been assumed that Melbourne would have the first pick in the national draft and that the Demons would use it to select the spectacular Fijian-born ruck prospect Nicholas Naitanui.
But as of July 1, both assumptions are being challenged. The Demons are no longer certainties to finish bottom, and even if they did, a Victorian forward with a basketball pedigree might supplant Naitanui as the first pick.
Jack Watts, a 194-centimetre key forward from Brighton Grammar who has been outstanding in the under-18 carnival, has moved up the charts to the extent that he has become a serious contender to be the first pick in the draft, especially if the Demons "win" the wooden spoon.
In recruiting circles, Naitanui and another West Australian, Daniel Rich, had been touted as the prospective top two in the draft before the emergence of Watts, who kicked four goals for the Victorian Metro team against Victorian Country and had a five-goal, 17-possession haul against South Australia last Sunday.
Ladder position could determine the order of the draft, given that West Coast and Fremantle — which, like Melbourne, have two wins each — are considered more likely to select the WA pair of Naitanui and Rich ahead of Watts. Rich, a talented midfielder, is playing senior football with Subiaco.
There is a further subplot involving Watts, who has given up an Australian Institute of Sport's basketball scholarship to pursue a football career; namely that Watts, a year 11 student, will remain in Victoria next year regardless of who drafts him. He is committed to finishing VCE at Brighton Grammar, and would stay in Melbourne in the event that the Eagles or Dockers selected him.
Watts has received far less publicity and hype than Naitanui, whose exotic heritage, striking appearance and freakish athleticism have created a misleading impression that he is the certain No. 1 pick.
Indeed, some recruiters point out that Naitanui, while a gifted athlete and excellent prospect with massive upside, is very much an unfinished work and does not win much of the ball for a player of his (draft) standing; he often struggles to reach double figures in possessions and averages and one mark a game, but his enormous leap serves him well in ruck contests for Swan Districts.
Another factor in the No. 1 pick equation might be whether the Demons can recruit Fremantle ruckman Robert Warnock via the pre-season draft, easing the pressure on the club to secure a ruckman.
Watts' main asset is his marking — particularly in a contest — but he also has super speed for a player of his height.
The Australian Institute of Sport basketball program timed him at 2.79 seconds for a 20-metre sprint, an exceptional time for a player of any size. In basketball, he played as a point guard and was regarded as the best prospect of his age in Victoria and possibly Australia.
In his four-goal game against Victorian Country, Watts' matchwinning final goal in the dying seconds of the match followed a contested mark against multiple opponents. He is said to kick well with both feet and possess good agility at ground level.
The No. 1 draft pick scenario could become clearer when Victorian Metro plays WA at Telstra Dome in the final game of the under-18 carnival, a match in which, barring mishap, Watts, Naitanui and Rich will all play.

Draft holds promise for old friends
Emma Quayle | July 6, 2008

NICK NAITANUI hasn't always had very long legs, a giant leap, even longer dreadlocks and a reputation as perhaps the most promising young footballer in the country.
"He was the skinniest little kid, but he was always taller than everyone," remembered Chris Yarran, his teammate in the West Australian under-18 team, yesterday. Another teammate, Michael Walters, went further. "He had no idea about footy," he said. "But he had a really big afro."
Those two should know. The AFL draft takes teenagers from cities and towns all over Australia and turns them into instant teammates at the club that picks them. But sometimes, it finds more than one in the same spot.
Naitanui was born in Penrith, moving to Perth with his mother and twin brother Mark after the boys turned two. He has lived in many homes, in several streets and in a handful of suburbs. But when he was four or five, he moved to Bushby Street in the eastern Perth suburb of Midvale, and found some new friends to hang out with.
One of them was Yarran, a sharp, smart and highly dangerous forward who can kick goals from anywhere and will be a top-five or 10 pick at this November's draft. After starting this season in the Swan Districts seniors, Yarran injured his ankle a few rounds in and worried about getting back in time for the under-18 series.
He played his best game for the championships yesterday, creating opportunities for himself through tackling and chasing, then kicking the goals to go with it and feeling relieved he had found a little form. "I was feeling like there was a bit of pressure for me this year," he said.
"I played last year, but coming back as one of the older players there's the expectation that you're going to play well all the time. I feel like people expect things of me, but at the same time you've got to put that aside and play footy how you know and do all the things you love to do."
A little over a year ago, when he was chosen in the AIS-AFL Academy squad, there was different pressure. The squad's coach, Alan McConnell, remembers Yarran saying very little at his first couple of training camps, and thinking hard when he was forced to talk up.
His confidence is growing. "All those three boys come from an environment where things aren't all laid at their feet, and Chris has had to work hard to achieve what he's got and to develop his own self-confidence," McConnell said.
"When we first met him, you couldn't get two words out of him. You'd ask a question and he'd be reluctant to answer, to the point where he'd be trying to guess what the answer was that you wanted and then parrot that. It was so acute that at times he could give no answer at all. His growth in that area has been amazing, he's becoming more comfortable with himself, and happy, and it's really pleasing to see."
Naitanui has confronted different pressures in the past six months. When he started seeing his face on the TV, and hearing himself touted as the No. 1 draft pick, he thought it was all pretty good. Lately, though, the attention has felt like too much. Ironically, the teenager has this year started a journalism degree, although he plans to "travel the world and learn about all sorts of cultures" before becoming a football writer and grilling potential draftees.
In the meantime, he has been working hard on his kicking, and figuring out where he needs to be to get a kick; Naitanui can jump over the top of anybody and will compete to the end, but it's his game sense that might see him dip to No. 2 or No. 3 in the draft.
"Most of his possessions at the moment are coming around stoppages in the form of clearances, so if the ball's in his space, he's very effective," said McConnell. "The key for Nick is to put himself in that space more often, to read the play, and it's improving.
"When I first saw him, the game used to go past him or go around him. He doesn't necessarily get where he needs to be to take the number of marks you'd like, but he's certainly joining in the game for longer periods now. It doesn't really go past him, any more. He doesn't tolerate being pushed around any more."
Naitanui's other neighbour, way back then, was Walters, a small, slippery forward who can kick lots of goals, and may one day grow into a midfielder. If he isn't chosen in the first round of the draft, he probably won't have to wait long.
Walters is happy to claim credit for his now bigger, now dreadlocked friend. "If we weren't always out playing footy," he said, "Nicko might never have heard of it." A touch younger than Yarran and Naitanui, he has enjoyed following them, first into the AIS-AFL Academy and now into the state team.
"It's been good, just to follow along and see what those boys have done," he said. "We can still remember being little kids and I think maybe it's helped us all.
"It's good to have Nicko around because he always tells you what to do, he's always pushing you up and making you work hard. And Chris is the opposite, he just relaxes and goes with it. We're good for each other, I think. We just try and make each other be better."

Melbourne recruiter faced with big decision at draft
Mark Stevens | July 10, 2008
With the Gold Coast team on the horizon and compromised drafts arriving from next year, Melboourne's recruiter Prendergast said established clubs would have to wait another "three or four years" for another significant rebuilding opportunity.
At the start of the season his focus was on Western Australia, with standouts Nick Naitanui, Daniel Rich and Chris Yarran.
"Early doors it looked like the top three were coming out of WA. You make sure you get over there to see all those guys playing senior footy in the WAFL," he said.
Now there is a top-three player - and possible No. 1 contender - closer to home.
"As the season unfolds and blokes like Jack Watts start to bob up, you've got to cover all your bases," Prendergast said.
You could picture Watts, a key-position forward from Brighton Grammar, making an impact in a Melbourne forward line crying out for long-replacements for the David Neitz and Russell Robertson.
"Watts was well known about prior to the season starting - he'd been in the AIS squad," Prendergast said.
"But we hadn't seen him at the high-end level. He was playing footy for Brighton Grammar and he only played his first game of TAC under-18 footy two weeks ago at Sandringham.
"He's a really dominating player. His talent is quite obvious."
It is widely believed the top three is now Naitanui, Rich and Watts. What makes it difficult for the likes of Prendergast to make a choice is they are all such different types of players.
"You've got a ruckman, you've got a midfielder and you've got a power forward," he said.
"You just take the best player," he said.

Clipboard crew mine their business
Mark Robinson | July 10, 2008
They say this is a deep draft - the deepest since even 2002 - meaning a first-rounder should hopefully provide a club with a 100-gamer.
The player of the carnival was Vic Metro forward Jack Watts, whose claims to the No. 1 selection were enormously enhanced.
He is a natural forward with balance and smoothness, and has footy smarts.
One senior football official at a Melbourne club is without doubt he is the No. 1.
"They opened a market today and he's $2.20 and if I could tell you something . . . start loading up," he said.
Geelong's Stephen Wells agreed. His club, of course, won't get near him, but his opinion is better than most.
"If it was me today I would take Jack Watts, but it would be a terribly hard decision to take him over Nicholas Naitanui and couple of others as well.
"Those guys you have heard about are all star players."
Naitanui, the challenger for the No. 1 spot, has upside, which also means he has a long way to go to be a standout AFL footballer.
He can run, jump and is awesomely athletic, but apparently isn't a great accumulator of the pill.
Just nine touches yesterday but, remember, player development is premium business these days and the best judges say he is well worth the risk of an early selection.
Names not so well known but that will figure prominently include Daniel Rich, Tyrone Vickery and David Zaharakis.
For a good number of clubs, the big names won't be on their radars. Those players will be long gone when their number comes round.
Geoff Walsh, Collingwood football manager and former recruiter, said the lookout was on for players outside the first round.
"If you could pluck a player who's going to play more than 100 games, it doesn't matter where you pick them, whether they be 38, 48, 70," he said.
The Dogs are expected to take Ayce Cordy with their first-round pick, under the father son rule, which means their next pick is likely to somewhere in the 30s.
"You know who's going to be around your number," Clayton said. "We've picked out a few."
He's not alone. That's why there were so many overcoats and clipboards there yesterday.

Jordan Roughead a ruckman with the lot
Amelia Harris | July 28, 2008 12:00am
NORTH Ballarat Rebels coach Chris Maple rates Jordan Roughead among the best under-18 ruckmen going around after Roughead starred in the 90-point win at home against Eastern Ranges yesterday.
A cousin of Hawk star Jarryd, the 199cm Roughead is one of several possible first-round draft ruck picks, along with West Australian standout Nicholas Naitanui and Sandringham Dragons' Tyrone Vickery.
"I think he's been really impressive," Maple said last night.
"If the recruiters are pushing Naitanui to be No. 1, then Jordan Roughhead's really putting himself up there because he did really well against him and again (yesterday) he played against a boy taller than him (Andrew Renton) and played exceptionally well and pushed forward and kicked three goals.
"He's got more than just ruck duties to his bow. He can take a contested mark and move around the ground."

Farran Priest and Jaryd Blair tie for Morrish Medal
Amelia Harris | September 15, 2008
MORRISH MEDAL
Jaryd Blair (Gipps) 18
Farran Priest (Murray) 18
Dylan Joyce (Calder) 17
Andrew Hooper (N Ball) 17
Tom Rockliff (Murray) 14
Jordan Florance (Bend) 12
Ricky Ferraro (Dand) 12
MURRAY midfielder Farran Priest capped off a remarkable day for the Bushrangers, tying for the Morrish Medal last night. Priest, who at 17 is too young to be drafted, and Gippsland Power midfielder Jaryd Blair each polled 18 votes in the TAC best-and-fairest count.
A best-on-ground performance against the Oakleigh Chargers in the last round saw Priest grab the lead.
Blair, 18, had a one-vote final game against the Western Jets to force the first Morrish Medal tie since the TAC Cup was created in 1992.
Priest's win came just hours after minor premier Murray advanced to the second week of the knockout TAC Cup finals with a 14-point win against Eastern Ranges.
AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan said the pair were similar players, right down to both being 172cm.
"They're great prolific ball winners . . . two dynamic small players, not too dissimilar to (Port Adelaide's former Morrish Medal winner) David Rodan," Sheehan said.
"It just shows you can get through. You can't ignore players like the Rodans and the (Tony) Liberatores who have come through over the years.
"There's no doubt people will take notice. They might have that something special that would see them get through."
Sheehan said Blair had to be in the mix to win.
"For a little guy of his size, he can take a fantastic mark, he can stand on their shoulders and has dominated some games," he said. "He's a dynamic, power pack leader.
"Certainly his size hasn't stood in the way of being able to match it with the big guys."
Priest has impressed in a star-studded Murray team.
"He's playing in a side with plenty of players with high credentials, players who made All-Australian this year like (Jack) Ziebell and (Kade) Klemke," he said.
"He's in among a side that dominated on top of the ladder. It certainly gives him the confidence he can mix it with the best players in the competition."
Calder midfielder Dylan Joyce and North Ballarat defender Andrew Hooper tied for second with 17 votes.
Murray forward Tom Rockliff, who kicked four goals yesterday, polled 14 votes.

Sloane claims 2008 TAC Coaches Award

TAC Team of the Year member and Eastern Ranges captain Rory Sloane has capped a magnificent year by taking home the 2008 TAC Coaches Award.
Sloane, a versatile half-forward and midfielder, won with 30 votes ahead of North Ballarat Rebels defender Andrew Hooper on 27 votes.
Sloane's coach Shane Watson heaped praise on his charge when he delivered a snapshot of his excellent year.
“His first few games before the national carnival was on, I’d say he was more a solid player Sloaney than anything else before he got himself in the Vic Metro squad," Watson reflected.
“With us he played midfield and forward and David Dickson thought he’d be pretty useful down back.
“Over the carnival he was one of the better players for Vic Metro playing on some really big names from WA and the like.
“When he got back from the carnival, he had a spring in his step and I guess the reason why I voted for Sloaney so much, was his ability to have an impact on a game – whether it be his leadership or the way he went about it in and under, going forward kicking goals. He leads both on and off the field and set’s a great example for everybody else.”
Last year Matthew Kreuzer took home the TAC Coaches Award, one that serves as a point of difference but no less distinguished to the Morrish medal.
“It’s a very prestigious award, it’s one that’s highly regarded,” Vic Country coach Robert Hyde said.
“This comes from the people that give specific tasks and jobs to players and value them as members of the team.”
Sloane was indeed chuffed and said he enjoyed greatly his time at Eastern.
“Thank you to all the coaches. It’s been a great year and over my three years it’s been a really enjoyable time," Sloane said.
"Shane Watson as coach… and Ian Flack, region manager they have really helped me."

Rockliff's ready this time
Emma Quayle | September 28, 2008
TOM Rockliff was one of the Murray Bushrangers' best players in the last half of last year. He took marks, kicked goals and helped take his team to grand final day. But when he was overlooked on draft day, he wasn't too shattered.
"I think it was good to have another year at home and hopefully make sure I got picked up this year," said the Benalla teenager, who was eligible to spend another season in the under-18s, and finished as the TAC Cup's leading goalkicker.
"You never know the way it's going to fall on draft day and you're not sure what the clubs are after, but it was good for me to stay at home and to work on the things that I knew I had to improve to take my game to the next level.
"That's what I've tried to do and it's just starting to pay off a bit now."
Rockliff shapes as one of the more interesting players in this year's draft. He is an expert contested mark and beats players he seems too small to compete with. He can kick goals from anywhere and would be way up the list in terms of football smarts. He plays not unlike Adelaide's Jason Porplyzia.
But the recruiters will be wondering if he has either the pace or endurance to play in the midfield as well, which means that next week's draft camp at the Australian Institute of Sport becomes a crucial part of his season.
Another query is whether an ankle — which he shattered in the under-16 championships two years ago — will let him move well enough at AFL level.
"I think I've built on last year. I've tried to take my game to a new level and play in the middle a bit more. I've picked up a bit more pace and my running style's improved," Rockliff said.
Seventy-five players will attend the camp in Canberra, with Jack Watts, Nick Naitanui and Daniel Rich most likely to be selected by Melbourne at No. 1.
Steele Sidebottom, considered a potential top-10 pick, possibly pushed himself further up the order after Friday night's TAC Cup grand final in which he kicked 10 goals.
The players will undergo medical and psychological screenings on Wednesday. The physical testing — speed, repeat speed, endurance, vertical leap and agility — will take place on Thursday.
The three-kilometre time trial will be held at the start of the last day.

Duo seeks end to uncertainty
Emma Quayle | October 4, 2008
JACKSON Trengove is a key defender of the future, with speed, spring and a fondness for making big, thumping spoils.
Last year, he played on Matthew Kreuzer during the TAC Cup finals, and made him work very hard. A few weeks earlier, he took on Ben McEvoy, and frustrated the normally unflappable player who would later become the No. 9 draft pick.
Tom Swift is a smart, smooth midfielder, who can dance through the centre square, feed the ball out or run it away himself. He's quick, too, and at some stage in his career will wind up in an AFL team's leadership group.
Early this year, both Trengove and Swift were seen as two of the brightest prospects in the 2008 draft. Both should still be chosen high; Trengove is still a likely top-10 pick, and the rumour mill has Swift in Geelong's sights.
But Trengove hasn't played football for five months and Swift has played only a handful of matches in the past two seasons. They are the two big mysteries of this year's draft.
Swift's first problem arose in April last year: the day before his Australian Institute of Sport-AFL Academy group left for its tour of South Africa, the group played a game against Perth at Subiaco Oval.
Early in the game, he twisted the wrong way, fell and found out not long afterwards that he had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
At the time — even though he was too young for the draft and had another year up his sleeve — he felt certain his chance was gone.
"I thought the clubs wouldn't look too positively on it, that it was over for me, but then I started to be more positive," he said.
Swift took it easy through the pre-season, came back in round four and played four games for the Claremont Colts before joining the under-18 West Australian state team.
He felt like he was getting better but in the final trial game before the national championships he landed awkwardly. This time, he injured the ligament running down the side of his right knee.
"At the time, I thought I'd done my knee again," Swift said. "I think once you've done one, you have that fear. But the left knee actually took a bit of impact on the landing, and it stayed strong when my right knee buckled. So it was disappointing, especially so close to the carnival, but I still felt like it was good signs for my left knee."
Trengove was injured while training with the Vic Metro team, the day before it flew to Tasmania to play its second game of the carnival. He was running with the ball and wasn't expecting the smother that crashed across his right knee.
As he hobbled off the track, he told himself he would be fine but the following morning, he was in pain, lots of it, and found out he had torn his hamstring from the top of his fibula bone. He watched Metro win the carnival while taking stats in the coach's box. He's had to learn some patience as he has worked through his rehab program, but he's not let himself worry about what the injury might mean come draft day.
"It was a bit hard because I'm the sort of person who just likes to jump in and do everything at once, but it's been OK. The clubs don't seem too worried about it, so that's a good sign," Trengove said.
"I just tried not to think of the draft and the camp … I thought whatever happened would happen and a part of me wanted to think about it and wonder about it, but I knew I couldn't change it. I wasn't able to play, so there was nothing I could do. I just had to do what I could do, and wait to get better."
Swift feels similarly. Had he re-injured himself in his first or second game back, he suspects he would be feeling a lot of uncertainty now. But he will be ready to go when he joins his new team for pre-season training, and the fact he had begun to find some form has made him believe he will belong, wherever he ends up.
"The best thing was that I was improving with every game. That was the most positive thing. And everyone always said it would happen that way, but you don't really agree with it until it actually happens," said Swift, who used his right knee injury to work on his left-foot kick and worked to build up his core strength.
"I was feeling really confident going into that last game, and I've tried to hold on to that.
"It was unfortunate and disappointing, and the last two years haven't been great. But I was able to prove to myself that I could get back and play some good footy even after the adversity I had the year before and that's been good for me.
"I probably still have a lot to prove, and it messed with my head a bit, but I feel like I've been able to put it all in the past now.
"If I'm lucky enough to be drafted by a club, I feel like I can go there and be just like any other player on the list. That's what I'm looking forward to."
