Title: Your favourite player who never quite made it
Post by: one-eyed on March 03, 2008, 04:35:30 AM
We all had a player(s) who we had a soft spot for who never quite kicked on the way we hoped whether that be due to form, lack of opprotunities or injuries.

So who was your favourite player(s) who never quite made it?

Limit to players who played less than 50 games.

I thought about Marty McGrath but in all honesty he wasn't really a favourite although after his 5 goal debut out of nowhere I was quite excited only to have him gone at the end of the season.

I've had to bend the rule here slightly but there is one player that I think never made it and should have. Although he played 68 games for us and 9 for Essendon he would have to be one of the most irritating players we have had on our list. He had the skill and the agro we so desperately need at Richmond. When he first appeared on the scene I really thought we had a player and at one stage he was my favourite. Little did I know he was a complete head case and a waste of space and oxygen. A player that makes me more angry than any other failed player we have had on our list. If you haven't already guessed, it is one Ty Zantuck.

Neville Roberts .... probably didn't hang around long enough to cement a place in the side.

Although Geoff Raines & Barry Rowlings were about to come onto the seen in a big way might have seen GR push him out rather then keep him.

Yep.

I was hoping Matty Dundas would become a gun goalsneak for us but he never really got a go. 5 goals from 8 games for the Tiges.

Simon Clark
Chris Pym
Cory Young

All very good U19 players in the 80s but just didn't have it at senior level to last in the big league.

Who could forget when DJ Tim Fleming gave a little chin music to Nick Riewoldt. It brought a tear to my eye.

Im not sure if he qualifies, he wasnt a bad player at all but he and one other player played for RFC at a really bad time in our history. For various reasons they didnt have the impact I was hoping

Peter Wilson- Would have been a sensation in a better side (I wish we could 1 or 2 like him today)

Michael Mitchell- One of my great sadnesses, could have been anything if he could have played a normal career.

Tim Flemming is just about my least favourite player ever.

Unskilled hack who played in one of our worst sides.

lol. I think you are forgetting such champions as Luke Weller, Shane Morrison and my personal favourite Simon Fletcher. At least you got 100% from Flemming. Maybe it wasn't all that good but you knew it was all he had.

2003, What a fantastic draft that was.  :wallywink

I would call a footballer who's won dual AA honours and JDMs a guy who's made it more than most.

Besides it asks for favourites, not players you witch hunt.

The bigger is one Richard Lounder  ;). The only VFL/AFL player to kick 4 goals in a game leaning against the goalpost.
