Title: Kym Monteath
Post by: Bulluss on August 24, 2004, 11:31:38 AM
Does anyone know what it the status of Monteath?

Earlier this year alot of people were talking him up as a gun recruit and someone that RFC would almost certainly take under the father son rule.

I think from memory he may have hurt his shoulder but not too sure, does anyone know anything they can add to his current status and draft chances?

Ineligable this season Bully,as he's too young.
Will be eligable next season, and from all reports will play for us if asked to! :cheers

Further bonus is he'll learn under a far better coach than our young blokes now have had.
Title: Kym Monteath stars for East Freo colts
Post by: mightytiges on March 20, 2005, 08:37:05 PM
The WAFL season started this weekend and Kym Monteath bagged 4 goals and was named second B.O.G. for East Freo colts.

If he keeps this form up (was great early last year too before doing his shoulder) we'll be able to pick him up cheaply under the F/S rule in 8 months time :thumbsup.

Rhys is playing with Coburg as well

Kim is a little on the light side, so hopefully can get a full season and some conditioning.  (says a mate from fremantle)

BTW, is Daniel Strachan eligible this year as well?

Weaver on BF says he's also around 185-186cm.

BTW, is Daniel Strachan eligible this year as well?

He's playing for Coburg this year IIRC.

Yeah Daniel is playing for Coburg and played int eh RFC practice match on Friday to make up the numbers. Daniel Strachan is very very lean.

They also had Rix (the big blond headed bloke) and a couple of others from Coburg making up the numbers.

Thankfully they didn't have either of the Houlihan's (Adam & Josh) making up the numbers ;) ;D :rollin

"Daniel Strachan is very very lean." A lean Strachan? I seem to remember Greg was built to run the 100 in 10.2 minutes, stopping for 3 pies on the way.

I'm thinking about cruising down to East Freo Oval this Saturday Morning to watch the East Freo colts number 11 in action.

It all depends on the misses and kids though, might even try and take the camera down to see Monteath Junior have a run.

I'll let you know how I go, might be difficult with it being Easter Weekend and all but I definately want to see the kid in action.

Hey Guys I managed to pop down to East Freo Oval this morning to catch Kym or Monty as he is known in action.

THis week he didnt play a blinder like he did last week to my disappointment. But here is some facts on this kid:

He is NOT a KPP, who ever said that is talking out of their backside! he would be about 182 cm tall.
He is not a CHF
He played today as a true Centremen, from what I saw he has an excellent disposal by foot and even though he had only abou 12 disposals I was very impressed with the fact that 3 of those were pinpointed passes to forwards that all resulted in Goals.

He is quick but not explosive.
He is definately on the light side and will seriously need to work on his upper body strength
He is definately right footed, tried to kick on his left during one passage but was tackled before getting foot to ball.
Today he basically spent his whole time in the middle of the field, hardly ventured down back or even up forward to my disappointment, possibly needs to push forward a bit because he has a good clean pick up under pressure and can still get a good disposal away, keeps his cool.
Probably my big negative on him is that he isnt an in and under midfielder like Cogs, I would say he was more like Bowden when it came to really getting in and under the packs.

At the end of the day although he wasnt that great today he was tagged in the 3rd to my suprise  considering he didnt have huge disposals but I came away thinking he was a skillful kid.

Any further questions I'll be happy to try and answer them.

Good on you PRR  :thumbsup
For a guy who didn't have a great day, was a pretty comprehensive report.
No questions from me other than how old is he again?
Father/son players have to be pretty good these days to give up a draft pick for, so be looking forward to hearing what you think of him by the end of the season if you get the chance to see much of him.

Thanks for the report  :bow

Great reporting PRR  :cheers

Probably hard to answer from one game and only 12 possies but what did you think of his awareness and decision making?

That's true Moi. Kym's got to be worth at least a mid 30's to early 40's pick to be worthwhile being picked up under the F/S. Otherwise we'd be better off picking him up with a late pick like we did with Raines.

Title: Re: Kym Monteath
Post by: Puntroadroar on March 27, 2005, 09:28:01 AM
It's probably the thing that I was happy about MT,

Kym appears to have the footy awareness around the ground, running to position directing team mates into posistions etc.

I wouldnt say as yet he is worth a second round pick yet, I suppose it would be too much to ask considering he came off a bad shoulder injury last year and could be the reason why he is still playing colts. I Hope this year he learns quite a bit, who knows he might even end up at coburg like his brother at years end.

I will tell you though, there was one passage of play where the ruckman knocked it down his throat, he grabbed it while about to be tackled dodge him then a second guy went to grab him and he spun around him (this is where i got excited) BUT then he ran forward and gave a silly look away handpass that missed his team mate by a fraction LOL I was spewin just a good effort wasted by a silly disposal.

btw moi, he was born 24/08/1987

Cheers PRR. We need as many players with footy brains as we can get although that silly handpass would fit right in with Tiges at the minute  :-\.

I would have thought if Daniel Strachan was already playing VFL footy that he would be too "old" to use on a F/S pick (although I don't know how old he actually is).
Title: Re: Kym Monteath
Post by: blaisee on April 07, 2005, 09:32:28 AM
mighty,

he is 20 this year.

In any case there is no age limit for father sons, the criterion is that they cannot be listed with an afl club previously.

What I meant to say is that Strachan is more likely than monteath to get father/ sonned.
Title: Re: Kym Monteath
Post by: mightytiges on April 08, 2005, 07:04:51 PM
Still not too keen on using a valuable 3rd round pick on a 20 year old when we could pick him up later on in the draft. blaisee, if you had said Daniel Strachan is clearly ahead of Rhys Monteath then I would understand that but his younger brother Kym is only 17 IIRC. A bit of an age difference to compare on another too.

Looks like after a couple of weeks finding his feet after promotion from the colts to the WAFL reserves about  month ago, Kym Monteath has cracked it into the best players on the weekend and kicked a couple of goals for East Freo reserves:

WAFL Reserves - Round 15

East Perth 1.0 3.6 4.8 5.9 (39)
East Fremantle 3.6 4.10 6.11 11.15 (81)

By the way the spiel on him is:

Kym's available for F/S this year CB. I haven't seen him play though so I don't know as only a Colts player whether he's good enough for a 3rd round pick but he's usually named in best players most weeks.

Maybe late pick/rookie him?

I think that'll be closer to the mark CB. We will have less picks this year and our 3rd round will be around the 40 mark before trading so we probably won't use it on a speculative kid (as you say he didn't make the WA U18's) like we did last year with McGuane.

Here are Kym Monteath's stats for 2005. The WAFL site only has them from round 7 up to now.

I sent an email off to the WAFL the other day asking about Kym Monteath. They had problems when they changed their stats package earlier on in the year and are trying to obtain the first 6 rounds of stats now. So hopefully they will be able to email the rest onto us.

In regards to Kym, I can provide the following information:

Height: 181cm (at start of 2005 season)
Weight: 78kg (at start of 2005 season)

Guys,

I have now seen Kym play a few times to continue my report on page 1 here is a summary:

He has very good disposal by foot.

Still is an outside midfielder, not a Tuck or Cogs inside midfeilder IMO

Still needs to build on his upper body strength

Is quick but not explosive.

Is he worth a 2nd or 3rd round pick yet? Possibly not yet.

I seriously think his shoulder injury last year has hindered his upper weights program this season, I think he really needs another year to build on his body size, with a bigger body he may gain more confidence in himself.

I'd like to see him follow his brother across at years end and play for coburg and perhaps have Richmond look after him, because he definately has the skill.

Thanks for that PRR  :cheers.

I hope we take our near our full quota of 6 rookies next year. Thursty shows the value of using the rookie list to find good kids that aren't ready by the time of the National draft but just need some extra time and AFL guidance to develop to their full potential. Once on the rookie list if they are any good then we get first choice at promoting them onto the senior list whereas in the VFL it's open slather in the draft despite us putting the time into developing a kid at Coburg.

PRR, did Monty play up forward yesterday as you would reckon if he had snagged 4 goals from the midfield he would have been named in the best players?

Half Forward MT,

with spurts in the guts.

he had about a dozen and a half disposals.

Cheers PRR  :cheers.

Just checked theWAFL site. Monty had 17 touches and 4 marks along with his 4 goals 1. Am surprised he wasn't named in the best with those figures.

A quieter game from Monty in the WAFL Colts PF - 12 disposals (7 k, 5 hb), 1 mark and 2 points.

A couple of young KPP who are expected to go top 10 in the November draft also played for the East Freo Colts on the weekend.

Josh Kennedy - 16 disposals (10 k, 6 hb), 5 marks and 4 goals 2 behinds including the winning goal with 20 seconds to go.

Patrick Ryder - 16 disposals (12 k, 4 hb) and 4 marks.

East Freo will play in the Colts Grand Final next week. So good luck to Monty.

I asked about Monty's game on a East Freo forum and this is the reply I got:

"Kym's game was poor and was summed up in the last quarter when running into a open goal from 15 metres out and missing when we really needed it."

Their seniors suck and always have but their Colts team has now won back to back flags.

Then you'd think that most of those kids would come up through the ranks and make their seniors a somewhat decent side in a few years.

I remember hearing how Peel Thunder were just stuffing hopeless, on and off the field.

Hocking was starting to turn things around a bit, then things went to hell and he left.

They've had like a ton of coaches and gm's since they started playing.

They'd be a good place for a wanna-be AFL GM to go and rebuild the club.

I'm a sucker for playing dynasty modes in games, i'd love to go to a really poo team and rebuild them.  :rollin

Is it likely that Monty will be drafted by us? coz i haven't heard any hints about getting Monty from Miller or TW.

I contacted Miller a while back asking about Monty but he would neither confirm nor deny anything about out rookie possibilites (fair enough). I haven't heard anything but there was a rumour that one of rookie trainees was from interstate. I have no idea if that could have been Monty.
