Richmond prepare for fired-up Power
The Age | June 17, 2008 - 3:55PM

Richmond are bracing for a fired-up Port Adelaide as the Tigers start a crucial month in their AFL season.

They play Port at AAMI Stadium on Saturday and the two sides have won four games apiece.

Richmond then face Carlton, West Coast in Perth and Essendon.

The Tigers beat Melbourne on Sunday and coach Terry Wallace said they must build on what he called "a solid performance".

"We've got some games over the next few weeks that are really going to be important for the club if we're going to have any sort of say in having a strong, vibrant second half of the year," Wallace said.

"You don't get ahead of yourself in this competition at any stage and one-in-a-row isn't a platform for anything at all.

"We notice their coach put a few of their senior players on notice after the weekend's game, that will be interesting to see the response that they get from their group.

"But we have no control over what they're doing, as we didn't with Melbourne and their buildup last week."

Usually when we pump ourselves up publicly before a game we end up getting flogged so probably for the best we don't say we're fired up.

Wallace wants Tigers teeth in contests
richmondfc.com.au
5:25 PM Fri 20 June, 2008

RICHMOND will aim to make the contested ball their own when they take on Port Adelaide on Saturday at AAMI Stadium.

Tigers coach Terry Wallace said his teams strength in the contest had allowed them to stay competitive against better skilled opponents this season.

Given Port's recent struggles to add efficient inside ball winning to complement their outside running, there is sure to be plenty of intrigue in the duel of styles between the two teams.

"In any game of football, if you go after the footy, you're hard enough often enough normally results will go your way, and one of the keys to our game this year has been contested football and we've been very strong in that area," Wallace said.

"Every game you play if you can get a hold of the contested ball you're usually in the games and we've found most of the year we've been competitive in our matches home and away because of that contested part of the game.

"Clearly, they'll want to improve that area of their own game so that'll be one of the challenges for both sides."

Port Adelaide's propensity to fade away at the end of games has been noted and used by coaches at three-quarter time since its round four loss to the Brisbane Lions.

But Wallace admitted that the criticism could also be directed at the Tigers.

"When you have a look, both sides have probably almost lost unloseable games along the way," he said.

"Carlton and Brisbane games will stick in the craw of Port Adelaide, the Bulldogs game we were three goals up with a couple of minutes to play, St Kilda kicking for goal either side of the siren and missing easy shots probably sticks in our craw.

"Either side could be a lot closer to the eight if they'd got those close ones right. It's probably the area last year that Port did right."

A corked thigh is not expected to be any sort of hindrance to Tigers spearhead Matthew Richardson, while Port seem likely to cover for the demotion of Justin Westhoff by giving ruckman Brendon Lade the chance to re-build some confidence up forward.

We'll need to win the contested ball for more than 20 minutes this week.

Not really his thigh from what I was told. A fraction higher and more to the side but he's fine.

So how about  a bit of insight to who you would pick to do the hard work or how they will go ?

Instead of regurgitating this krap, we all know McMahon is an outside softy and his roll in the team is not contesting the hard ball. Agreed it should be at times, but it's not - move on

Port Adelaide to keep playing tough
Michelangelo Rucci | June 21, 2008

PORT Adelaide says it will not relent on its much-criticised bravado. The Power - ridiculed for being undisciplined with a heavy focus on the man rather than the ball against Geelong last weekend - says it would prefer this image than being continually labelled "soft".

But the biggest challenge for 12th-ranked Port in its home clash with 11th-placed Richmond at AAMI Stadium today is to refine the bullying that failed against the Cats.

"This game is a massive one for us - and we have really focused on a hard edge to us," assistant coach Matthew Primus said yesterday.

"We thought we had it for a fair bit of the game against Geelong - and that has been our focus.

"We want to keep that attack on the footy and that attack on the guy with the footy. We did not think it went over the top (at Geelong).

"We were very happy with our passion. We'd much rather have a team play with that passion than not."

But that passion - from a team criticised for not winning the contested ball - cost the Power 34 free kicks and four 50m penalties against the Cats.

"You can temper that," said Primus of the refinement needed at Port.

"And guys may go over the top, but we'd much rather have guys play that way than the other way. The guys will find a level they are more comfortable with."

Richmond coach Terry Wallace said he had one clear message for his Tigers if the Power continues to focus on the man rather than the ball - and he did not hide the question of Port's capacity to play contested football.

"I've heard Mark (Williams) say he would prefer his team to play that style of football than any other," Wallace said.

"Go after the footy," added Wallace of his advice to the Tigers.

"In any game of footy if you go after the footy hard enough, often enough, then normally results will go your way. I think one of the keys to our game over this year has been contested football.

"We have been very strong in that area and we continue to tell our players to play that way. Get in for it first."

Richmond arrived in Adelaide yesterday with only its match 22 and key forward Matthew Richardson showing a large, dark bruise on his lower right hamstring.

"He is fine, good as gold," said Wallace of the corked leg.

"You prefer the bruise to come out, it's no problem.

"It will be interesting to see which way the opposition go (with a match-up for Richardson). I have a feeling Chad Cornes will be the one they may want to go with, that is up to them."

Primus said the Power had "three or four different plans" for the inspiring Richardson, who has kicked 35.18 in 12 games this season.

"We have someone who obviously will play on him when he is forward," said Primus, confirming Cornes could play in defence.

"And when (Richardson) tries to head up the ground (to a wing) we'll have a couple of plans whether we let him go or sit on him.

"Different teams have tried different tactics. It has worked and it has not worked. He is the key to how they play and we'll certainly make sure we have a plan for him depending if he is up the ground or deep in attack."

Hope it does rain. Remember a game in 05 v Port over there where we were 8 goals down before the rain came we hit the front only for the rain to stop in the last quarter and Port beat us by 14 points. Let it rain let it bucket just like it did v Freo in 2003 at the G.

True but we've been lucky too. Should have been a free in their forward line that could have made 15 points earlier in the quarter.

We'll win this provided we don't stuff things up and be proactive. None of this short backwards sideways crap.

We deserved the win as we lead for most of it but the question has to be asked again as to why slow the game down again too early when we are well on top. You also don't chip around inside your defensive 50 as you end up cornering yourself. You spread out over the whole ground and get the ball in the middle so you have plenty of options as players can run more easily into space. Anyway we got the job done and a win's a win and it was a great effort to win over there. I wonder if the media will pump us up now as much as the are Carlton. A great result for next week. The G will be packed out  :thumbsup.

Not much option when you are an up and coming side and are forced into it, maybe in a couplpe of years when the clevs jacks et al are ready to provide stronger options up the spine we can then take it on.
Like the commentators said it was the opposing side that forced the game into that situation when we had the ball.

Umpires were terrible.

Gee I don't like to blame umpiring for anything but they really did single handedly wrest the momentum to Port in that last quarter when it was in the balance. Free after free was ignored when the ball was 30 meters in front of our goals then the ball goes down the other end and Port get a real soft one directly in front. Poor old NGB will need a good chiro to get his neck back in order.

Oh well, we won, but sheesh, talk about a close call. We deserved to win we were the better team.

Finally I AM SO HAPPY HUGHES REALLY TOOK A GAME BY THE SCRUFF OF THE NECK!!!!! On that performance I for the first time I am confident he will be OK. Well done Hughesy!!  :clapping

This is a game we usually lose and we BLOOD/Y won.

what a win. best win in 3 years since the jamie tape inspired  win years ago over at footy park

away from home backs against the wall and we did it.

im very happy because we played Morton and Hughes and they won the game for us, not Richo!!!

for all of you who think i am never happy, win or lose, well come over and have a beer with me now, im over the moon.
I just wanted to win a game we weren't expected to win and we did..

I'll have to go and look at it again, but don't think this was the case.  More Port just played better in the last quarter.  Only time I saw them do it was in the last minute or so, well after Port had nearly snatched it.
If we were going to lose it, it was going to be the turnovers - we were turnover kings today.  Some really bad and could have been costly ones.
But we won, so who cares.

Like the commentators said it was the opposing side that forced the game into that situation when we had the ball.
I didn't mean we take their flood on but if you're going to play tempo footy you still want to control the middle of the park as then you have space to go forwards, sideways or backwards far more easily and it's harder for the opposition to shut you down. We got ourselves into trouble because we trapped ourselves inside our defensive 50. Very risky play in such limited space and actually very hard to play tempo footy in without making a turnover. And it wasn't Jack or Cleve's fault either as they are down in the goalsquare. The midfielders and defenders are meant to spread to pull it off. Yep it's a learning experience for such a young side so you give them some slack but they've done it twice now trying to shut the game down too early and failed miserably at it.

We deserved the win as we lead for most of it but the question has to be asked again as to why slow the game down again too early when we are well on top.

It sounded from the commentary we did go defensive with 8 minutes to go. Lots of slow short passes and then kicking backwards back into our defensive 50 just to hold onto possession. Schwarz made note we changed the way we were playing at the 17th min mark.

But as you say Moi, we won so it worked out right in the end  :thumbsup. I just can do without the heart failure lol.

For me it was our best win against a "better" credentialled opponent since we beat the Dogs in the 2001 Telstra Dome grudge match. We won the hard match. This win has lead me to compare the way I am feeling now to what I felt in 1994 when we beat the Pies on the Queens Birthday then North by 5 points and went on to win 6 in a row only to miss out on the 8 but still create a launching pad for our 1995 season. With upcoming games against Carltankscumcheatliesteal West Coast Essendon and Brisbane whose to say we cannot win 6 in a row now.  :thumbsup
At least if things pan out in a similar way we at least have the capability to score heavily as we have scored 20 gaols for the 3rd time this season as opposed to the scrambly scratchy wins we were renowned for during that era. Hopefully if things eventuate to fruition and our team climbs up the ladder the powers that be within the club don't begin to tamper with the fabric of the team as was the case post 1995. Great win great feeling great night. I am ecstatic.  :cheers
Glad to finally win a close one after close shaves earlier in the season that we were desperately unlucky to not collect the four premiership points from. Hopefully this is a watershed win and the boys can believe that they can play in the comp competitively and win most importantly. Sets up a launching pad for the rest of the year with our draw over the next few weeks.  :pray

Another pleasing aspect was the fact that Deledio and Cotchin were very quiet and had no influence on the game yet we were able to kick 20 goals and still have enough run and carry of the ball to create scoring opportunities. Other players were able to stand up and fill the breach. Matthew White is carving a nice niche for himself in the midfield. Kudos to the team.

I'd like to see us play 100 minutes of our best footy against a Geelong or Hawthorn. When we are good, we look unstoppable against average teams.

The umpiring in the last quarter changed the game, had these clowns just been consistent, we would've won by 4 or 5 goals and the whole tempo thing becomes obsolete.

In the last qtr, Browny gets a free for a high tackle and kicks the sealing goal.
Instead, I think it was Grey (who ducked FFS) and gets one and its a 12 point play - 28 points becomes 16. Joke.

Are you talking about Jordie, fluffy? lol

Tucky's been good the last 2 weeks IMO. Kept things simple by just pumping it out of the centre into the forward line. More kicks in instead of the zillion of handballs.

I think we'll like to see Joel and Polak back it up next week. I thought the Port game was one of Simmo's better ones for a while. Perhaps his knee is coming good.

You numbskull Dermie. Port's only won 4 games too you idiot  :stupid.

Dermie should stop trying to impress people with over intricate and unnecessary commentary and just simply describe the game in a simple and effective way. His life and his commentary are becoming a real source of mirth. Even his tenure on the board or whatever he was doing at Hawthorn was virtually fruitless. Guy should just re assess and move on. His time has gone past him as an entertainer and commentator.

Mark Williams stands by votes
Mark Stevens | June 27, 2008

PORT Adelaide coach Mark Williams has defended his decision to snub Richmond veteran Joel Bowden in the AFL Coaches' Association award.

Williams, who could not find room for Bowden in his best five players on Saturday, said he took into account the ratio between Bowden's contested and uncontested possessions.

He said Bowden, named as best on ground by Richmond coach Terry Wallace, was his choice for sixth best in the match.

Although Bowden took a match-saving grab, 21 of his 23 marks were uncontested. He also didn't lay a tackle.

"I thought Joel had a very good game and he would have been my next pick for votes," Williams said yesterday.

"Having said that, in the scheme of things I thought (Cleve) Hughes and (Mitch) Morton had more effect on the game.

"I also took the statistics into consideration when making the decision."

Asked why he named three Port Adelaide and only two Richmond players, despite the Tigers winning the game, Williams said: "In making my votes, I did acknowledge it was a four-point game, where we had more inside 50s, more shots on goal and more clearances.

"So you'd say it was pretty reasonable to go either way with the votes."

Wallace picked four of his own players and only one Port Adelaide player. Bowden was his best on ground.

Williams gave his five votes to Port ruckman Dean Brogan. He wasn't in Wallace's best five.

AFL Coaches' Association boss Neale Daniher said this week he wasn't concerned with Bowden missing out.

"So what?" Daniher told the Herald Sun.

"Everyone sees the game differently."
