Tigers may take a punt on Rohde

TERRY Wallace has sounded out sacked Western Bulldogs coach Peter Rohde about a back-up role at Richmond next season.

The new Tigers coach met Rohde yesterday to gauge his interest in joining a revamped football department at Punt Rd.

Rohde, who will coach the Bulldogs for the final time against Essendon on Sunday, will spend the next fortnight pondering his future.

The interest in Rohde comes as the off-field purge begins at Richmond.

Football manager Greg Hutchison and assistant coach Paul Spargo are already gone.

Assistant Wayne Brittain's future also appears grim - he is believed to be sending out feelers to other clubs.

Recruiting manager Greg Beck's position is also under review. Only assistant coach Darren Crocker appears safe.

Wallace has cast the net far wider than Rohde and is hell-bent on assembling the best possible team.

He has spent recent days holding discussions with several candidates for roles in his team - from possible assistants to IT experts.

"I have not given a commitment to any one person at this stage," Wallace said last night.

Wallace is attracted by Rohde's all-round skills, witnessed first-hand when the pair worked together for three years at Whitten Oval.

"He is an extremely good operator across a lot of different paths," Wallace said.

"He could fit into football manager territory quite comfortably, he has a phys-ed background with experience in strength and conditioning and he has coached senior football for two years. He's just stepped out. He's got a very broad base. Why wouldn't I want to speak to him?"

Wallace has also spoken to his former football manager at the Bulldogs, Paul Armstrong, who is a certainty to take up a position at Richmond.

Armstrong, who has been out of football for two years, staked his claim as a recruiter before opting for management. He could succeed Hutchison or Beck.

Hutchison, the former Melbourne caretaker coach, was told by Tigers director of football Greg Miller on Monday he was not required.

Spargo, however, has opted to return to Albury.

Miller yesterday confirmed Hutchison's departure.

"Hutchy has been excellent in the last couple of years, he's been outstanding in his job," Miller said.

"I feel for him. And I think he would be a great asset to anyone else who would be interested in the skills he has.

"But the coach wanted a fresh approach, he wanted new people around the place."

The Tigers are working with strategic planners, their priority being the budget for the football department.

"There's going to be restrictions on how many people he (Wallace) wants for financial reasons . . . we are going to be a very tight ship," Miller said.

"So who finally finishes up on the team is a little bit up in the air as we work out what we can afford and not afford."

Asked about Beck and Brittain's future, Miller said: "Nothing else has been done."

Hutchison's departure comes in the final week of Danny Frawley's coaching tenure.

Tritto........!!!!!!

How good was it to wake up.....see Fanoula win gold...read the paper over a coffee and smoke and throw the coffee in the air to read Hutchy was given his marching orders. Ohhhhh how good is this? And Spargo as well? Ohhh my god, what did I do to deserve this? The way my day is going....Im going to have a SwordFish going on today at the office.

What wooden Spoon?

Note: To those who are unaware of a SwordFish, it is the name I have given to a scene from the movie when Jackman was being tested by Travolta with a time-limit and blonde bombshell. Being a programmer myself, after seeing that scene, it has been an ultimate dream...

“…the coach wanted a fresh approach, he wanted new people around the place."

That is the best news to see that. :thumbsup

You can’t be so ordinary for so long and not expect to see massive changes at any Club.  And not just change for the sake of change, but taking the time to put together a group that will be able to work together and have the best available opportunity to get the best out of the playing list.

Yep Hutch had to go - didn't kick it long. didn't man up. didn't go for the hard ball, was innacurate in front of goal, didn't take the first option, had bad body language, and most importantly Jackstar didn't rate him  ;)

If that's so then it's interesting that the only coach to survive is the one with premiership experience.

3 down - two to go  :thumbsup

Meanwhile, Richmond has made a cleanout of its football staff.

Joining sacked coach Danny Frawley after Saturday's final round game against Sydney will be assistant coaches Darren Crocker, Wayne Brittain and Paul Spargo and long-standing recruiting manager Greg Beck.

Beck will finish his association with Punt Road after the national draft in November.

New coach Terry Wallace will announce his staff next month, but the Tigers are expected to approach 2005 with one less assistant coach.

President Clinton Casey said mid-season that Richmond would prune about $600,000 from its under-achieving football department next year.

Tigers sack entire coaching staff
29 August 2004
Sunday Herald Sun
Ken Piesse

THE biggest purge in Richmond's history began last night when its coaching staff was sacked.

After another insipid performance, this time against Sydney at the MCG yesterday, football director Greg Miller confirmed incoming coach Terry Wallace would have a fresh coaching and management team.

Miller said sweeping change was necessary as the club had been humiliated by its run of 14 consecutive losses, the biggest rout in a single year in the Tigers' history.

By becoming an easybeat and likely to clinch its first wooden spoon in 15 years, the club had lost respect in the football world, he said.

Wayne Campbell has stood down as captain, while up to half of yesterday's team might have represented the Tigers for the last time.

Outgoing coach Danny Frawley said the Tigers have lost momentum because of injury and the replacements had failed to perform under pressure.

Frawley said he felt particularly badly for his immediate support staff, all of whom have been replaced. They include his three assistant coaches – Darren Crocker, Wayne Brittain and Paul Spargo – operations manager Greg Hutchinson and recruiting chief Greg Beck.

"I feel a helluva lot of responsibility about that," Frawley said. "But my hands are tied.

"Danny Frawley will take a very backward step at this club; it is Terry Wallace's turn now."

Surrounded by his wife, Anita, and three young children, two of whom led the team out beside captain Campbell yesterday, Frawley said the pressure to achieve as an AFL coach was incredibly stressful and many supporters and some in the media had been disrespectful.

"We seem to be easy targets," he said. "Coaches should be given more respect; it's one of the big jobs in Australian sport. You are probably among the most accountable people other than the Prime Minister. Whether it is the Australian way . . . unfortunately it seems to be a trend."

Held goal-less for more than an hour in yesterday's one-sided farewell, downcast Richmond players joined the staff as Frawley thanked everyone for their contributions over his 113-game coaching career.

In his press conference last night he:

* Anointed Kane Johnson as the best possible new captain at Tigerland.

* Admitted he was wrong at the end of the 2001 season to think the Tigers (third that year) were just a step away from a Grand Final.

* Named the Brisbane Lions as having this year's premiership "in the bag".

"They are probably the best team of all time," he said.

Many from his home town of Bungaree were at the game, including his oldest brother, Michael, and family. Michael said he was proud of everything Frawley had achieved, both as a player at St Kilda and in the past five years as Richmond coach.

"We go in wide-eyed and bushy-tailed and know what the ramifications are," Frawley said.

"You don't see it (the axe) coming, but when it does it's a disappointing time."

Sydney coach Paul Roos said the criticism of Frawley in the past four months had been "disgraceful".

Roos said he would be ringing Frawley later in the week to wish him all the best and hope that he may stay close to football.
