On Talking Footy - they said Blumfield was given his marching orders today.

The others mentioned were Marsh, Houlihan, Fletcher and Nicholls with one to follow. Neither Fleming or Hilton were mentioned.

They also said that Wallace wasn't delivering the news Greg Miller was and that Terry is supposed to be addressing the players tomorrow

Cool om21 - I probably missed Fleming's name after because of my joy in hearing Blumfield got the flick.

BTW don't agree with Fleming getting the chop - there are others before him that should go

Fiora is still contracted until next year. Traded or paid out is the only way he can be cut.

Not surprised by the names. All out of contract and all wouldn't be part of a premiership even if they survived one more year.

I can understand froars being upset. There is no way Fleming based on his attitude and commitment should have been cut before Fiora if they were both out of contract but a contract is a contract. Similar to Duncan and Rogers surviving last year.

Getting rid of Fleming is not a good example to borderline players trying to improve themselves.
Timmy gave absolutely everything of himself and this is his reward.
Wallace can go to hell  :'(

I too am a Flemming fan, maybe Wallace could have worked on his disposal and got this better because there was never any doubt on this boys commitment which is sadly lacking in the majority of the rest :'(

No question this time of year is awful and heartless but from this it looks like we are going to set a standard in regards to AFL footy ability and if you don't cut it and are out of contract it's good-bye. Dare I say it - Ruthless Richmond  :o.

Tiger cull
By Mark Robinson
September 1, 2004

THE blood-letting at Richmond has continued, with three players told yesterday they were sacked and another three being delisted today.

The Tigers would not release names last night, but it's understood the six will come from Adam Houlihan, Billy Nicholls, Marc Dragicevic, Simon Fletcher, Ben Marsh, Justin Blumfield, David Rodan, Greg Stafford and Rory Hilton.

In a week-long purge, which started with the sacking of the entire football and recruiting departments, it's understood the Tigers yesterday told three players they were not required next year.

Another three will be told by 10am today.

The sackings follow the retirements of Duncan Kellaway and Matthew Rogers.

It's understood another six players will be offered for trade in October.

Tigers football director Greg Miller confirmed the sackings last night but would not divulge the names.

"The process has begun but it has not been completed," Miller said.

"Yes, there will be some changes on the list and there will be a media release as soon as it's completed."

Positive news, however, is that Kangaroos assistant coach Brian Royal is set to join Wallace at Richmond.

Wallace begins his Tiger purge
By Jake Niall, Stephen Rielly

www.realfooty.com.au

Essendon premiership player Justin Blumfield was among a quartet of Richmond players who were given their marching orders yesterday.

Blumfield, Adam Houlihan, Marc Dragicevic and Ben Marsh were all told their services were no longer required by the Tigers. Another two players are to be axed today, while coach Terry Wallace speaks to the remainder of the playing group for the first time this afternoon.

Blumfield, who only four years ago was among the best afield in Essendon's 2000 premiership side, was last night told of his fate by Richmond football director Greg Miller, who has presided over a massive cull of the Richmond football department that has now spread to the players.

Wallace's address to the players, his first since he was appointed coach, is a sign of the urgency that has gripped Punt Road since the new coach came on board, with the entire coaching panel having been cleaned out, along with Richmond recruiting manager Greg Beck. The commitment to a long-term overhaul, reflected in Wallace's five-year contract and the cleanout of players yesterday, is expected to be further underlined today by the appointment of Brian Royal as an assistant coach for at least three years.

The Tigers are expected to confirm the arrival of Royal this afternoon, the first of several appointments Wallace is to make as he rebuilds a football department that effectively has been levelled.

Blumfield, 26, was acquired by the Tigers in the dying minutes of the trading period of 2002 as Essendon was forced to shed players to get under the salary cap. Traded for pick 28, Blumfield appeared to be a bargain-basement deal in the Essendon fire sale. But injuries have robbed him of much of the athleticism that made him such a valuable player at Windy Hill and an important contributor to the Bombers' last premiership.

Houlihan was brought in to "top up" the Tigers following their preliminary final appearance in 2001 but he, too, failed to have the impact the club sought.

Marsh, a former Adelaide premiership ruckman, was drafted by Richmond at the end of last year as insurance for the talented but injury-prone ruck combination of Brad Ottens and Greg Stafford.

Dragicevic, 23, was brought up from the rookie list this year and managed to make it back into the senior team for two games but has not made up the ground he lost since he had two knee reconstructions.

Interesting!! Flemming not mentioned :thumbsup

But Rodan is :gobdrop this has to be a mistake. If we were going to off load Rodan we wouldn't be delisting him, he'd be traded for sure.

Fleming might be safe after all froars  ;)

Blumfield, Dragga, Houlihan and Marsh are already gone (plus Rogers and Duncan retired).

Fletcher, Hilton and Nicholls you'd reckon would also get the instant chop. That's more than two others ???. Geez it says something about how pathetic our list is when we have more that should be instantly delisted than what's named in the paper :P.

Hmmm... 6 trades - out of Tivs, Fiora, Chaffey, Hyde, Rodan, Zantuck, Pettifer ??. Gas but I can't see it happening. AK too old to trade.

If the Age is correct Blumfield Marsh Houlihan dragga are all gone.
Then if it's only two more: Nicholls and Fletcher.
Lucky Hilton eh! Hooray for fleming!

6 players traded.

Gaspar, Andy Kellaway, Chaffey, Hilton, Stafford, Tivendale.

PS: better get some help for ottens in the ruck!    :thumbsup

Why Stafford - at least he could ruck properly?  I don't want Fleming to leave - give him a year under Wallace first.  Sad about Blumfield - my Essendon mate will be gloating - said that Blumfield was on the way down.  Personally, I don't think that major injury he had last year did him any favours.

I just heard Terry Wallace on SEN - he said that he was disappointed in the speculation of who the players are. He said that as soon as the other 2 are told the club will issue an official press release.

He said that 4 got told yesterday. A couple of blokes have been difficult to contact because of "Mad Monday".

He also said that a number of guys would be very nervous this monring because of the stories in the paper but a couple of blokes will be happy after their meetings.

He will be speaking to the playing group today - all players are due in for medical assessments.

Draga spoke to the Morning Glory this morning and confirmed that he got a phone call from Terry on his way to the Mad monday drinks.

He said he will now sit down with his family and close friends and manager to decide which way he goes from here.

Its sad, but thats football and WE MUST move forward and not get personal.

Keep up the good work Terry. :thumbsup

I hear what your saying Bully but sometimes it's hard for it not to become personal. We develop emotional attachments to certain players (I know I have this year in particular) and it just makes it hard and a little sad

But nice attempt Mark Robinson -  :help

Dont worry about who is cut , worry about who is traded thats of interest. the players who are cut are not in our best 22 anyway, they are just taking the places of prospective young players coming through the system ;)
As for Rodan , you might find he will could be traded with the another club taking his last year of his contract .

Im pretty excited aboutthe purge too...its good to see it happening finally...but i agree with Jacko...the real game is yet to come...and thats trade time...we need to do something with the likes of stafford and rodan and tivendale and chaffey...mind you...the delisting of marsh and the possible trade of stafford makes ottos future at Richmond interesting...It either means hes getting traded to another club for a ruckman and another player and possibly a draft pick...hes been traded for 2 draft picks and a player...or weve lined up a ruckman for the psd and well take one or two late in the national draft...whatever happens...its interesting times at punt road!

Blumfield heads Tiger purge
11:39:34 AM Wed 1 September, 2004
Paul Gough
Sportal

The massive turnover at Richmond has moved from the administration to the playing list with six players told on Wednesday they are no longer required at the club.

The players are Billy Nicholls, Adam Houlihan, Ben Marsh, Justin Blumfield, Marc Dragicevic and Simon Fletcher.

This follows on from the retirements earlier this season of Duncan Kellaway and Matthew Rogers meaning the Tigers already have eight vacancies on their list for next season.

But the Tigers denied reports that David Rodan, Greg Stafford and Rory Hilton had also been given their marching orders saying reports to that effect were "damaging for those individuals."

With the exception of Dragicevic, the players delisted by the Tigers were all recruited from rival AFL clubs, with Blumfield - a star at Essendon during the club's all conquering 2000 premeirship campaign - clearly the biggest name.

He came to Richmond at the start of 2003, a victim of Essendon's salary cap problems but has been plagued by injury throughout his time at the club.

The man who was second best afield for the Bombers in the 2000 grand final behind James Hird never recovered from virtually tearing his thigh off the bone in the Tigers' Easter Monday clash against St Kilda just four games into his new career.

He still managed 11 games for the season but this year could play just eight after knee and shoulder problems sidelined him for the first half of 2004.

Blumfield has played 148 games since debuting in bizarre circumstances in the re-start of the infamous Essendon-St Kilda "blackout" game of 1996 at Waverley Park but at just 26 - he turns 27 in late November - his career could now be over.

Marsh, a 1998 premiership ruckman from Adelaide, was picked up by the Tigers in last year's pre-season draft but has been delisted after just one season as has Simon Fletcher, a former wingman with Carlton who was taken at pick 79 in last year's national draft.

Dragicevic has had to battle back from two knee re-constructions but was given a second chance by the Tigers this season after being named on the rookie list after being de-listed last year.

But due to his age, he will be 24 next season, he would no longer qualify for the rookie list next season and the Tigers would have been forced to put him on the senior list which they were unwilling to do.

Nicholls joined from Hawthorn in 2003 but has rarely featured in the senior line-up while Houlihan has also struggled to command a regular senior place since joining from Geelong in 2002.

The de-listing of the six players continues the purge at Punt Road since the end of the 2004 season in which the club lost its last 14 matches - its worst ever losing run in a single season - to finish on the bottom of the ladder for the first time since 1989.

Senior coach for the past five years Danny Frawley has already left the club as has former football manager Greg Hutchison and Frawley's former coaching assistants in Wayne Brittain, Darren Crocker and Paul Spargo as new coach Terry Wallace begins the task of not only purging the senior playing list but also hiring a new coaching staff.

All things being equal there are about 20 blokes on our list who should be given the flick, but its good to see they picked out the biggest duds of the bunch.

I must say I'm amazed Rory Hilton survived the purge. Interesting that Morrison survived, given that he's a ready made player who has done nothing and can't even get near a spot in the firsts. Still LMFAOOOOOOO@the hype surrounding the dud jsut becuase he would have been manning up on Jonathan Brown in training drills.

Fleming rightfully earnt another year on the list through his work ethic, even though I'm pretty sure Wallace won't let him anywhere near the firsts.

Six Tigers get the axe
02 September 2004
Herald Sun
By Mark Stevens

NEW Richmond coach Terry Wallace swung the axe swiftly to avoid playing out a charade and creating false hope.

Wallace, who met the playing group for the first time at Punt Rd yesterday, did not want to address anyone he knew was not part of the future.

"I had no intention of speaking to guys I had no intention of keeping," Wallace said.

"Why build them up for no reason? Once you've made a decision on them, I don't think you offer people false hope."

Missing from the meet-and-greet session were Justin Blumfield, Adam Houlihan, Marc Dragicevic, Bill Nicholls, Ben Marsh and Simon Fletcher - all early victims as the rebuilding of Tigerland begins.

Wallace made it clear yesterday to all others on the list that they have a part to play in the new era at Punt Rd.

But there could be further changes during trade period. Like all clubs, very few players will be untouchable if the right deal comes along.

With the retirement of Matthew Rogers and Duncan Kellaway, eight Tigers are already gone. The Tigers only turned over eight players last off-season.

Wallace said it was too early to call whether the total turnover would possibly extend into double figures.

"It depends on trades and what opens up and what doesn't open up. I can't guess what's going to happen in future," he said.

Wallace has kept a close watch on the Tigers' playing stocks all season through his media role.

"I've seen every game for the year," Wallace said.

"I've met with Greg on numerous occasions and I thought it was time to make a decision in everyone's best interests."

Wallace spent half an hour addressing the playing group yesterday morning, outlining his vision.

The message was clear: It has been a horrible year, but everybody in the room had the ability to change it for the better.

Wallace will interview every player one-on-one in the next month.

Heartache after the games stop
Jake Niall
On Thursday
September 2, 2004

In a failed relationship, the sacked party often hears that "it's not you, it's me". In the AFL, the discarded player is told, with similar sincerity, "we think you'll have more opportunities elsewhere".

Just as there is no "good" break-up for the jilted lover, players and coaches who get the sack are seldom happy with the manner of their dismissal.

Peter Rohde was angry that he was given undertakings - i.e. the full support of the president - before his execution. Peter Schwab admits to nursing bitterness. Schwab, too, had his position "guaranteed" by the Hawk hierarchy.

Favourite sons Kevin Bartlett and Wayne Schimmelbusch were famously bitter, not simply because they were sacked as coach after decades of service, but at the way their exits were handled, or mishandled. KB still hasn't forgiven or forgotten.

One of Schimma's gripes at the time is a common complaint of the sackee - that third parties, including his wife, knew about it before he did.

In football, September is the cruelest month and spring is the season of sackings. In the coming days, numerous players will be called in to see the coach or football manager and told that they're surplus to requirements. Some will be fortunate enough to be traded or exhumed in the pre-season draft; most will never play league footy again.

If there is no such thing as a nice way to be sacked, there are, as in life, better ways to be downsized.

As a rule, players and coaches cannot stomach hearing of their fate via the media or another third party. Hawthorn went to great lengths to ensure that Schwab was first to hear of his demise, but couldn't get the news to the players before it reached the media pack, which has a bloodhound's ruthless scent for a coach sacking.

These days, the media hounds have learned to listen to the president's dog whistles about the coach: first, the coach is "guaranteed". Then, the president says: "They have a contract." Finally, before the axe falls, the club announces "a review of all positions in the football department".

Greg Miller is an experienced hand in the difficult art of dismissal; in recent days, he has been wielding a samurai sword at Punt Road on behalf of Terry Wallace while trying to treat each victim with respect and dignity.

Miller, who had the distinction of having been the 1980s hangman for a 100-game Kangaroos player named Andrew Demetriou, believes there is a better way to go about the cull. The first rule is never sack a player over the phone.

"I never do them over the phone - always face to face," said Miller. "Close the door and look them in the eye and tell them the truth."
While players prefer honesty to spin, they, like the rest of us, also appreciate some gratitude and/or words of encouragement about what they've given the club, provided it's genuine.

In general, the person who has signed the death warrant - usually the coach - should also be bearer of bad news; Miller, one assumes, landed the ugly job because Wallace was still, to a degree, coach-in-waiting and Miller would have shared responsibility for the decisions.

Even as they protest that "it was the way it was done" that embittered them, in truth, what really upsets the victim is the fact that they've been cut. This seems particularly true of coaches - precious few think the club has made the correct call.

For the aggrieved ex-coach, questioning the club's method of execution is like the argument about lethal injection versus the electric chair. There is no humane way to go and the injustice is not the means by which one is killed, but the fact that it was done.

I thought this was a really interesting and good article.

I know players get cut every year and it would have to be a terrible thing to do  but "kudos" to Greg Miller for the way he handles it (refer the bit in bold) - face to face - well done Greg :thumbsup
