Why do they play most of these games way out at Cranbourne :P. The Vic Metro v WA game at the Dome isn't a bad one to go to though - Hurley, Trengove, Naitanui and Rich playing.

Key Tasmanian forward and reigning under-18 All-Australian Aaron Cornelius kicked three goals, while Tyson Mihocek and Brodie Shade kicked two each.
Mitch Robinson and Ryan Harwood had a game-high 21 touches each, and were close to Tassies’s best.

The good thing about QLD and NT no longer being in the U18 champs is the new Gold Coast team has access to these kids anyway.
-
Kevin Sheahan on SEN (noting it's his job to pump up all young U18 footballers up)
Naitanui - Already BOG in a WAFL final last year. Built up since then. 197cm ruckman. Quickest kid of that size to come through the AFL academy. Leap and speed over first 5m best ever. He didn't make footy his proriety until he was 16 so still learning too.
Yarran - WA indigenous medium forward. Kicked 5 and then 7 in senior footy this year.
They are the likely the top 2 at this stage.
Others in first round - Ziebel (powerful midfielder), Watts (quick CHF/CHB, basketball background) and Trengrove (CHF,CHB, ruck).
First round is strong but depth of draft will be known after the U18 champs.

VICTORIA Metropolitan has pulled off a stunning three-point victory over arch-rival Victoria Country in the opening match of the first round of the NAB AFL under 18 championships.
Metro 12.4 (76) defeated Country 11.7 (73) in the curtain-raiser to the Melbourne and Hawthorn clash at the MCG, after Jack Watts, who booted four goals, kicked the match-winner just before the final siren sounded.
Yet at the 17-minute mark of the last quarter (all terms are 20 minutes with no time-on), Vic Country looked set to overcome the city slickers, having trailed at every other change, when Tom Rockliff jagged his fourth for the match.
It was fitting Watts and Rockliff stood up for their respective sides in the latter stages, as they were super for their respective side's best. Watts also finished with eight marks, including four contested, as Rockliff finished with a game-high 11 contested possessions.
Vic Country's Nick Suban, an under-18 All-Australian last year, had 25 disposals - the most for the match - and was also superb. Teammate Nic Heyne, who took a cracking one-handed 'speccy' up forward in the final term, finished with 19 touches and two goals.
Shaun McKernan, the younger brother of dual North Melbourne premiership player Corey, impressed for Vic Metro with 11 disposals and 13 hit outs. And Michael Hurley, an under-18 All-Australian defender last year, continued to impress down back.

WA flogged NSW/ACT. No official summary or score as yet on the AFL site so here's a summary from an Eagles fans on BF:
I'll start by saying NickNat is possibly the best thing since sliced bread. Absolutely the best talent I've ever seen. Absolutely controlled the ruck, both in the air and on the groundd. Amazing. BOG.
Rich was very dissapointing. Had a tag, but for a kid touted to go top 2 you expect a bit more, was good when he got his hands on the ball, but didnt get enough of it for mine, especially against NSW/ACT.
Mitch Marsh - Cricket will struggle to keep him unless W.A play him at some stage this year, lead up well, a solid pair of hands and a good finisher. Ended up with 5 playing as a roaming foward, couldnt figure out if he was HFF, CHF or FF. Think he may have been given free reign. Very, very promising, maybe needs to grow a tad more to be a viable KPP option but never the less outstanding.
Neville Jetta - One word. Deadly. Super kick, super quick and a good size. You want pace and good skills, this is your boy. I was very impressed with his game and now understand why Chrisco goes on about him. Worked hard both ways too.
Garlett - Showed off his skills today, displayed a fantastic leap, Sampi-esque, lead up well, simply dazzled his man. Like Jetta has good skills but doesnt find his own ball as much as Jetta. Another one to watch.
Kane Lucas - Underage player who in a years time will be one they talk about being drafted in the first round. Great size, good skills, a hard runner, clean around the packs. A very safe bet in a years time. Hopefully he continues to play more school footy and stays under the radar.
W.A won by 50 odd points but is probably irrelevant. The story of today was the performance of NickNat and the aboriginal boys. Outstanding display from the indigenous kids and a few boys not spoken about as much as Rich and Co may get their name put up in lights.
W.A look to have a well balanced side and will be hard to beat again.
The blokes above are the kids that I paid particular attention to.

WESTERN Australia has opened its NAB AFL under-18 championship with a comprehensive 70-point win over New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.
The Sandgropers 15.7 (97) defeated NSW/ACT 4.3 (27) in the curtain-raiser to the AFL clash between Fremantle and Port Adelaide.
Last year's title winners led by margins of 20 points, 38 and 43 at the respective breaks, before stepping up a level with five goals to one in the final term.
The powerful Western Australia side, featuring the much-talked about Nick Naitanui (20 hit outs and six tackles) and Daniel Rich (15 touches and four inside 50s), also had the likes of Lance Daly (five goals) and John Bennell (four goals) shine.
Michael Walters was also a standout for the Sandgropers, booting three goals and collecting 20 touches, while Matthew DeBoar was Western Australia's leading ball-winner with 25 disposals.
Geelong scholarship holder Ranga Ediriwickrama was outstanding again for NSW/ACT, gaining a game-high 25 disposals. Mitch Clisby was also among his side's best for the Rams.

Shifter's wrap: Thumbs up for new format
afl.com.au
By Kevin Sheehan
4:54 PM Mon 02 June, 2008
WITH the completion of the opening round of the 2008 NAB AFL under 18 championships at Subiaco, reigning champions Western Australia finally shook off a committed and determined NSW/ACT outfit by 70 points.
We can now make early claims that the new expanded format is an immediate success.
Designed to be an aspiration-inspired format for the under 18 players across Australia, NSW/ACT qualified for the right to play against Western Australia in the division two series in May.
The Rams were then able to contest themselves against the best from the west, in what was an entertaining match, played as a curtain-raiser to the Fremantle and Port Adelaide clash.
The experience of playing on the wide open spaces of 'Subi' and travelling to Perth is all part of the aspirations from youngsters hailing from Sydney, Canberra and the Riverina of NSW.
Both Western Australia and NSW/ACT will take a lot out of their first match from their five games.
The Sandgropers' defence was led by the poise of Clancee Pearce and the dashing Stephen Hill, who rebounded many of the Rams' forward thrusts.
They were among Western Australia's best, along with lively small forward Michael Walters, John Bennell and Clint Gartlett. They kicked nine goals between them and complimented the work of midfielder Kane Lucas. His ball-winning ability and usage was exceptional.
The athletic potential and promise of Nick Naitanui was again a feature. He laid a game-high seven tackles and had 20 hit-outs, as he continues to learn the rucking craft.
For NSW/ACT, Ranga Ediriwickrama was prolific. He gained 25 disposals and was one of his side's best. His clean hands and quickness around the ground was a feature.
Rams midfielder Jeremy Kirkwood also displayed a disciplined game, curtailing the exciting Daniel Rich.
On Saturday, at the picturesque Adelaide Oval, South Australia came from a point down at half-time to take a convincing 45-point win over a plucky Tasmania, who has confirmed its ability to be competitive at division one level.
South Australia had winners in North Adelaide trio - Rhys O'Keeffe, Dale Armstrong and Lewis Johnston (four goals).
For Tassie, Mitch Robison and Jesse Crichton were prominent with their pace through the midfield.
Those two matches completed a highly entertaining first round of games, after Victoria Metropolitan defeated rival Victoria Country with the last kick of the game at the MCG on Sunday May 25.
Metro's Jack Watts' contested mark, 45 metres out from goal, with 15 seconds remaining resulted in an accurate major under pressure, topping off an impressive game from the 194cm tall forward. He finished with four goals.
Vic Country's left-footed midfielders Nick Suban and Nic Heyne were both outstanding contributors for their side. Heyne took a spectacular one-handed mark in the goalsquare, which was a magic moment.
Next weekend, the second round takes place over three states on the Queen's Birthday weekend. Much more will be learned from our country's outstanding youngsters, as they experience the ground condition and travel elements, which are so important in the AFL competition.
The fixture is:
NSW/ACT v Vic Country, Saturday June 7, 12.30pm, Henson Park
South Australia v Western Australia, Sunday June 8, 12.35pm, AAMI Stadium
Tasmania v Vic Metro, Monday June 9, 12.30pm, Bellerive Oval

UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Champion Data Newsletter
Round 1 of the Championships has been completed, and here are some of the more notable scorers from the weekend’s games.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
60 – Hamish Hartlett: The younger brother of Carlton’s Adam is a midfielder who started his carnival in reasonable fashion. Scored a brilliant goal in the second term and ended with 11 disposals and two majors.
60 - Lewis Johnston: Power forward who scored four goals – all in the second half. He also spent 56 of the 80 minutes on the bench and is a brilliant set shot for goal.
TASMANIA
45 - Aaron Cornelius: Tassie’s gun key forward struggled to have any influence and finished with just 11 disposals, two marks and one goal. I am expecting more output in the coming weeks.
109 - Tom Salter: A superb effort to score so well considering he only played 65 minutes. Let’s see how he goes against Vic Metro this weekend.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
60 – Nicholas Naitanui: He spent 26 minutes on the bench yet still scored well. Won 20 hitouts and laid a gamehigh six tackles but took only two marks. I’m yet to be convinced he’ll be suited to DT.
63 – Daniel Rich: He was disappointing on Sunday and isn’t in great form, but remains the best midfielder in the draft at this stage. A gun who could score Nathan Buckley-like numbers for years to come. Already playing senior footy in the WAFL so will be ready for AFL action in ’09.
84 – Michael Walters: Picked up 20 disposals, scored three goals and oozes class with everything he does. A name to remember.
NSW-ACT
100 – Ranga Ediriwickrama: He’s almost certain to be rookie listed by Geelong at season’s end as their NSW Scholarship player. He’s an absolute ball-magnet who just keeps racking up the big scores.
66 – Scott Reed: Reed will end up at Collingwood via the NSW Scholarship scheme and is a defender who can find a bit of the ball. Picked up 15 disposals and six marks against W.A.

VICTORIA Metropolitan thrashed this year's NAB AFL Under-18 second division championship winners Tasmania by 67 points at Bellerive Oval on Monday.
Vic Metro 12.8 (80) defeated Tasmania 1.7 (13) on the final day of the Queen's Birthday weekend triple-header, which saw elite under-18 matches staged in New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania.
Metro never looked in doubt after leading by 33 points at quarter time. It was during this term when the Apple Isle registered its only goal, courtesy of Tyson Mihocek.
The Vics had several standout players including forward Tom Lynch, who bagged four goals. Lynch was also Metro's leading ball-winner with 21 touches. He also gained nine hard-ball gets and impressed with his contested marking.
The only other multiple goalkickers for the match were Aaron Purves (three) and Jack Watts (two), while at the other end of the ground, key defender Michael Hurley again impressed. Luke Shuey also gained 18 touches and was among Metro's best.
For Tassie, Tom Salter continued his excellent carnival with a game-high 26 disposals, as did Hunter Harrison Medallist Mitch Robinson and teammate Jesse Crichton, who both collected 21 touches each.

Ricky Nixon reckons Cordy (Dogs Father/Son - tall athletic type - "Naitanui with footy smarts") would be his No.1 in this year's draft. The doggies will get him for pick 27-30.
He said last night Naitanui's stocks may have slipped as others show their footy smarts in the U18 champs.

UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIPS WRAP
Champion Data e-Newsletter
There was just the one game in the Under-18 Championships last week, at Aurora Stadium between NSW-ACT and Tasmania.
Here were some of the key players in last week’s game.
NSW-ACT
79 – Scott Reed: The Magpies would be rapt with his progress. Another 17 disposals and five marks in the win.
68 – Kade Klemke: Close to BOG with 20 disposals and a goal, he has been starring for Murray in the TAC Cup and can dominate from half-back.
4 – Ranga Ediriwickrama: His average dropped dramatically after he pulled a hammy after only 12 minutes.
TASMANIA
91 – Tom Salter: Another big game from the Tassie midfielder with 20 disposals, six marks and five tackles.
64 – Mitch Robinson: Was once again close to his state’s best player with 15 disposals and seven contested possessions.
34 – Aaron Cornelius: Disappointing, again, and his stocks are plummeting. He desperately needs a strong end to the carnival to be back in contention as an early pick.

VICTORIA Country has bounced back from an upset loss to NSW/ACT a fortnight ago to defeat Western Australia by 27 points in the 2008 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships at Subiaco Oval on Saturday.
The visitors dealt WA their first defeat of this year's NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, running out 11.4 (70) to 6.7 (43) victors in a curtain raiser to the West Coast v Geelong match.
Country set up its win with an eight goal to three first half and kicked away in the final quarter against a lackluster WA.
WA won the inside 50 count 43-23 but were unable to find the space to deliver cleanly to spearhead Chris Yarran. Country on the other hand refused to cough up the ball and delivered to advantage with Nic Heyne (three goals) and Andrew Browne (two goals) the most productive of their forwards.
But Country were able to find options all over the ground with eight separate goal kickers in a low scoring affair.
For WA, Nick Naitanui was unbreakable around the stoppages doing it all for his team. He had 18 hit-outs and 10 clearances, but struggled to have the same influence around the ground.
Matt DeBoer (23 possessions) was clean for the home side across half-back while highly rated Daniel Rich (eight) struggled to shake the close attention he was given.

VIC METRO has continued its unbeaten record in round three of the NAB U18 Championships with a commanding 53-point win over South Australia at Adelaide Oval.
The Victorians led by just 13 points at quarter time, but set up the well deserved win with a five-goal-to-one second term. They ran out winners 17.5 (107) to 8.6 (54).
South Australia responded in the third term with two goals to Johnny Boras helping the home side to draw within 13 points, but the powerhouse Victorian side proved too strong kicking the last seven goals of the game to run out easy winners.
Impressive Vic Metro forward Jack Watts booted five goals in the absence of Tom Lynch (knee) and was well supported by fellow big man Tyson Vickery (two goals) and ball magnets Dylan Joyce, Luke Shuey and Tom Scully, who finished with two-apiece.
Athletic ruckman Shaun McKernan dominated the ruck with 15 hit-outs, 12 disposals, seven marks and a goal and David Zaharakis and Mitchell Banner were standouts in the middle.
Dale Armstrong, Jay Shannon and Matthew Broadbent each finished with 21 touches for South Australia and Boras (three goals) and Paul Cahill (two goals) were the picks up forward.

Ive never seen him play but im coming around to the suggestion that if Jack Watts is available at our pick we should take him. Reports suggest hes a good height/weight and has good speed. We need another option up forward just to make sure.
-
Watts is 194cm, 85kg. If he has a few bag of tricks other than just a mark and goal forward then he'd be a nice addition for us. No go home factor to worry about and a true sized KPP once he develops and builds up his 17 year old body on an AFL list. It'll all depend on where we finish. Watts may go before our pick.

The way Vic Metro coach Dickson was pumping Watts up this morning he'll go top 5 :-\.

Big wrap for Jack Watts. Calling him a star and up with the best WA kids.

UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIPS WRAP
Champion Data Newsletter
It was a big weekend for the Under-18 Championships last weekend with two games between the four big sides. Vic Country upset a disappointing Western Australia on Saturday and then the gun Vic Metro side was too good for a gallant South Australia on Sunday.
There are no games this weekend but expect a full wrap of the carnival in a fortnight when it comes to an end.
If you are still sceptical of the importance of this data, remember that the second-leading DT player in the 2006 Championships was Bryce Gibbs and the leading players last year were Rhys Palmer and Cyril Rioli – all who turned
out to be DT stars in their debut season.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
83 – Matt DeBoer: Here’s a player who will be a good cash cow for 2008. Is a ball magnet who currently leads
the carnival in disposals with 69 in three games.
72 – Nicholas Naitanui: Another encouraging performance from the big man who will excite crowds for the next decade. Won 18 hitouts and had 13 disposals but failed to take a mark which is why I still see him as having questionable DT potential.
70 – Neville Jetta: Exciting indigenous player who picked up 15 disposals and provided plenty of run. Needs to win a bit more of the ball to be a serious DT prospect though.
58 – Stephen Hill: Expect this star to be a bolter in this year’s draft ala Scott Pendlebury in 2005. Has clean hands, is a super kick and has genuine pace. One of my favourites at the minute.
50 – Daniel Rich: Another disappointing effort from the highly touted midfielder. Had only eight disposals and will need to pull his finger out in the last two games to remain in top-five calculations for the draft.
VIC COUNTRY
87 – Jack Ziebell: Looms as a possible top six pick after a superb performance on Saturday where he picked up 22 disposals. Has poise and is a gun at the stoppages. May play AFL next year.
49 – Steele Sidebottom: Has now played three good games in a row and dominates at TAC Cup level for flag favourites Murray. I’m a big fan and expect him to be a handy DT player as early as 2009.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
80 – Jay Shannon: In his first appearance for the carnival Shannon picked up 21 disposals and laid three tackles to be one of his state’s best.
68 – Rhys O’Keefe: Has been the Croweaters’ best player throughout the carnival, averaging 17 disposals and three rebound 50s as a running defender.
46 – Hamish Hartlett: Started off well with eight disposals in the opening term but struggled after that. Still yet to have over 14 disposals in a game in the carnival.
VIC METRO
101 – Jack Watts: Put his hand up to be the No.1 selection of this year’s draft – in front of Naitanui – with a sensational display both in the air and on the deck. Took seven marks, won 17 disposals and booted five goals in the best individual game of the Championships to date.
94 – David Zaharakis: Has now put in three solid performances on the wing. He’s a running machine who finds plenty of the ball and is a good chance to play AFL in 2009.
79 – Shaun McKernan: Corey’s brother put in another impressive display, taking seven marks and winning 15
hitouts.
-
I just saw some highlights of Watts, um lets just say hes a gonna be a good player ;D pity he fired up this well in the carnival, If I was Melbourne Id pick him infront of the fijian. Watts - good run and good speed for his height, excellent contested mark. A top young player based on these things alone.

Agree Ramps. Before the Champs Watts was certain to be around our pick but now it looks like he'll go top 3 :(.
1. Melb - Watts
2. WC - Rich
3. Freo - Naitanui
Yarran, Ziebell and Hurley would be now in line for our pick is we finish in the bottom 6.
-
mckernan and hurley would certainly come under richmonds consideration.
and if we can trade a player for a later 1st round pick, you would think suban, stephen hill or sidebottom would
be looked at.
suban has excellent skills and most of his disposals are spot on,has very good defensive skills as well.
l dont know alot about hill but hes suppose to have elite endurance ,and his footy skills are very good.
sidebottom has very good skills, and looks like he could really bulk up and be a very strong midfielder,or hb/hf flanker.
-
Yep I forgot about McKernan. Should definitely be on our radar as a KPP. Hartlett would be another potential top 10 although seeing him play last year we have similar types already.

South Australia has enjoyed a strong win over Vic Country on Saturday afternoon
SOUTH AUSTRALIA has withstood a late comeback from Vic Country to win by 34 points in the second of three NAB AFL Under-18 Championship matches at Casey Fields on Saturday afternoon.
SA led by 49 points at three-quarter time but was challenged by the Vics in the final stanza when they piled on five majors to get within four goals.
But SA stood firm and managed to run out winners – 14.14 (98) to 9.10 (64).
South Australian midfielder Hamish Hartlett was best for his side with 23 touches and a goal, while Luke Tapscott top-scored with five.
Their teammate Paul Cahill booted three and Chris Hall was good around the stoppages.
Hartlett is the younger brother of current Carlton-listed player Adam.
Jay Shannon was also in good touch for South Australia, while Jarrad Redden had 11 hit-outs and Ben Speight kicked 2.3.
For the Vics, Jack Ziebell had 20 touches and kicked a goal, Jamie Sheehan was hard in the middle with five clearances and Tom Rockliff booted three majors.
Nick Suban, All-Australian last year, continued to impress with 19 touches, five tackles and six inside 50s.

-------------------------
WESTERN AUSTRALIA has taken another step towards defending its NAB AFL under-18 title with a 60-point thrashing of Tasmania at Casey Fields.
In the first of a triple-header of under-18 action on Saturday, WA was simply too strong for Tassie, winning 14.16 (100) to 6.4 (40) on a crisp but sunny morning at the Cranbourne complex.
The Apple Isle side was kept scoreless in the opening term with Western Australia racing to a 24-point lead.
From there, Tasmania was never really in the game as WA moved steadily ahead each term to set up its 10-goal win.
Kane Lucas was the primary ball-winner for WA with 20 disposals, while Mitch Marsh topped scored with four goals, Michael Walters booted three and Chris Yarran two with his seven tackles.
Highly-touted WA pair Nick Naitanui and Daniel Rich had solid games with the former dominating in the ruck with 19 hit-outs, and the latter having 16 touches, including seven entries into the forward 50.
Rich then complemented his day with an impressive running goal in the fourth.
For Tasmania, 2008 HC Harrison Medal winner Mitch Robinson had a game-high 28 disposals, and Jesse Crichton was the side's only multiple goalkicker with two.
Aaron Cornelius was impressive with a big second quarter.

------------------------
VIC METRO has rounded out the fourth round of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships with a 51-point drubbing of the NSW/ACT RAMS at Casey Fields on Saturday afternoon.
The Vics dominated NSW/ACT from the outset with a four-goal-to-one opening term, and steadily increased the difference throughout the match to win 11.14 (80) to 4.5 (29).
Such was Metro's dominance, they kept NSW/ACT scoreless in the third term and didn't let it penetrate the goals until the fourth minute of the final stanza, when Daniel Spiteri converted.
The Vics had three multiple goalkickers with Jordan Lisle, Tom Scully and the highly-touted Jack Watts snaring two apiece, while Lisle also helped himself to 16 possessions and Scully laid seven tackles.
Xavier Gotch collected the most possessions on the field with 21 and ruckman Tyrone Vickery had 21 hit-outs, which was 10 more than NSW/ACT's leading big man Mitchell Frail.
For NSW/ACT, Kade Klemke had 19 touches and Scott Reed 16 with six tackles.
Dylan McNeil was handy with four clearances and 16 disposals.
NSW/ACT was dealt an additional blow midway through the final term when Anthony Stubbs was helped from the field with concussion.

Youngsters show class that will win them AFL spots
Emma Quayle | July 6, 2008
A LITTLE over a year ago, the 2007 under-18 championships wound up at Casey Fields. Matthew Kreuzer, Trent Cotchin and Callan Ward played against a Vic Country side featuring Ben McEvoy and Lachie Henderson, while Western Australia clinched its first title in eight years by beating a South Australian team captained by Brad Ebert.
More than half of last year's first 20 draftees had debuted in the AFL by the mid-season and the class of 07 has few rivals, at least as far as instant impact goes.
But time moves along, there are more players on the way and as this year's championships come to a close it's already easy to fill the top part of the draft out with some very promising names.
This could turn out a tall draft, at the very top. If Nick Naitanui is not gobbled up in the top two picks then he won't be far behind. The same goes for Jack Watts, who without having an enormous day for Vic Metro in its 51-point win over NSW/ACT yesterday, still managed to kick two goals and get the ball 12 times.
Jackson Trengove didn't play for Metro, and won't play for a while having injured his knee, but is an athletic, aggressive potential key defender, who could also finish up in the ruck.
At the start of the season, Michael Hurley was considered a possible top-three pick and he was excellent for Metro at full-back yesterday.
He will be an interesting one in the next couple of months: he's a natural defender and, more than that, a natural full-back. He reads the game well and can control the space around him really well. And he has a bit of a mean streak.
He could be up for grabs in the latter part of the top 10 now.
Ayce Cordy is pushing 200 centimetres, and would be a top-10 pick if the Bulldogs were not poised to draft him as a father-son selection.
The much younger brother of Corey McKernan, Shaun, was rested yesterday but is starting to shape as a possible first-round pick. So too is Tyrone Vickery, another ruckman.
WA's Daniel Rich hasn't had a brilliant carnival, and got some attention again yesterday, but is still the pick of the midfielders. He worked his way into yesterday's game — a 60-point win over Tasmania — and at his best can run, deliver and dig the ball out of tight spots.
The pick of the Vic Country crop, at this stage, looks like Jack Ziebell, who can play anywhere and impressed with a couple of gutsy marks and a few charges through the midfield yesterday, Country's best player in its 34-point upset loss to South Australia.
Hamish Hartlett played his best game for SA — he's a smooth, skilful midfielder/forward, who just needs to make sure he gets enough of the ball — while Rich's WA teammate, Chris Yarran, a sharp, classy goalkicker, also looms as a top-10 pick.
The championships will finish at Telstra Dome on Wednesday, with Metro to play WA for the title at 2.30pm, following the final games between South Australia and NSW/ACT (10.05am) and Tasmania v Vic Country (12.15pm). The games will be shown live on Fox Sports.

Jack Watts (http://www.afl.com.au/News/NEWSARTICLE/tabid/208/Default.aspx?newsId=62834)
"I really haven't thought about it at all – the draft or where I'm going. I haven't even decided whether I'm nominating or not yet," Watts admitted.
"I'm lucky to have the opportunity to get into this position, but I'm not really looking too much into it.
"Obviously, school is a massive one. If you happened to get picked up by an interstate team and you're still doing year 12, it can cause a few problems, so that's a big concern of mine – that's about as far as I've thought about it really."
Interesting thing to say when you're rated a top 5 pick 5 months out from the draft. Maybe also a way to scare off interstate clubs with 3 of them in the bottom 4 this year.

McKernan better change his kicking action coz if he continues to kick the way Ive seen him kick, hes going to come seriously undone under the greater heat of AFL action, especially in the general course of play.

Watts is almost the same height as Natanui, can take a grab and kick a goal, while Natanui has no real tricks apart from jumping high.
I know who i'd take.
Pity Watts has exploded at the champs, he might have been a chance for our pick if he'd stayed quiet.

Yep sadly :(. The only way I see Watts falling to us is if we lose most of our games from here and finish below Essendon, Melbourne feels the pressure to take Naitanui at #1 and the Eagles, Freo and Port go for home ground talent like Rich, Yarran and Hartlett respectively.
There's 3-4cm difference b/w Naitanui and Watts. Watts is 194cm and 85kg.

l think mckernan will be the most likely pick.
greg miller was involved with recruiting corey at the roos.
and he would have a good idea if shaun can be a good afl player.
theres alot of similarities between them.
-
As I stated a while back, McKernan has problems with the way he kicks the footy, unless he changes it he will be found out at AFL.
I wish him all the best, but if he doesnt change the way he kicks the footy Id prefer him NOT to be our first selection in November.

John Butchers dad by any chance didn't play 100 games for us did he.... :pray

Watching the final of the under 18's. Really like the look of Vickery, 200cm 86kg from Sandringham/Haileybury college. Played ruck/fwd/back. Have to admit i havent really heard about him before but maybe thats a good thing and he fly's under the radar. Anyone got ony more info on him?
Also Blease 183cm 72kg Eastern/Norwood. Had some real magic spurts maybe a little quiet at times though.

Blease didnt get alot of it, but when he had it he was good. He also has an extra gear when it comes to pace. He seemed to find abit extra when he was being chased down and on occasions gapped his opponent to deliver the footy pretty well. Based on today hes a 2nd rounder in this draft. Overall I am pretty disappointed with the quality of players.

SOUTH Australia has finished its 2008 NAB AFL under-18 championship on a high after smashing New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory by 80 points in the first of a triple-header at Telstra Dome on Wednesday.
The Croweaters defeated the Rams 20.12 (132) to 8.4 (52), to end their carnival with three wins from five matches.
NSW/ACT capped off a competitive carnival with a third-quarter fightback, after the team finished runner-up in the second division qualifying series to Tasmania. The side's win over Vic Country at Henson Park in June was one of the highlights of the championships.
Key South Australian forward Lewis Johnston was outstanding in front of goal, with four goals from seven scoring shots. His long kicking and contested marking was a feature of his play.
Luke Tapscott, who booted five goals against Vic Country last Saturday at Casey Fields, again impressed up forward with three goals in the first half before finishing with four majors. Damian Hynes also chipped in with three goals.
The highly ranked Hamish Hartlett, the younger brother of Carlton's Adam, also shone with a game-high 24 disposals, eight inside 50s and five rebounds. It was a commanding display from a player likely to be a top 10 draft selection.
Gun midfielder and Geelong hopeful Ranga Ediriwickrama didn't overcome a hamstring injury to play, although fellow scholarship holders Josh Duncan (Hawthorn) and Scott Reed (Collingwood) were prominent with 33 disposals between them.

Agree Ramps, the touted first 3 picks in Rich,Naitanui and Watts didnt stand out as much as i thought they would with all the hype surrounding them although out of the three id have to give the points to Watts.
Naitanui for a under 200cm player seemed handy in the ruck but seems to get lost around general play and i could be wrong but didnt see him take a mark at all. He did show some speed when he got his goal.

VIC COUNTRY has bounced back from its loss against South Australia last Saturday to produce an emphatic 98-point victory over Tasmania, ending its 2008 NAB AFL under-18 championship campaign with two wins from five matches.
Country defeated Tassie 22.6 (138) to 6.4 (40) after piling on 15 goals to three in the second half.
Tasmania, which won the second division qualifying series, ends its first division campaign winless.
Vic Country had several standouts, with John Butcher booting five goals and Jamie Sheehan, Ryan McKenzie and Sam Hughes all contributing three majors each. Sheehan had a team-high 21 touches.
Impressive Country players Nick Suban (18 disposals), Steele Sidebottom (17 possessions) and Nick Heyne (16 touches and 10 inside 50s) were also among their side's best.
Mitch Robinson, who won the Hunter Harrison Medal as the best player in the second division, was Tasmania's best performer with 24 touches, eight inside 50s and five clearances.
The highly rated Aaron Cornelius, who was an All-Australian player at this level last year, also capped off his series with a fine four-goal performance. Youngster Maverick Weller, who is still eligible for the under 16s, showed some promise.

VIC METRO has won this year's NAB AFL under-18 championships after holding off Western Australia by 29 points in the deciding match at Telstra Dome on Wednesday.
Metro defeated the Sandgropers 14.9 (93) to 9.10 (64) to regain the title the side last won in 2006, after WA won the carnival last year. The result capped off yet another outstanding series for Vic Metro, which has now won 13 titles since the state split into two teams in 1989. It was also coach David Dickson's eighth championship victory.
Tyrone Vickery, a 200cm tall, kicked three goals for Metro and was impressive up forward and in the ruck, while David Zaharakis, a player who was close to being drafted last year, had 18 disposals.
Jack Watts booted two goals against the Sandgropers and won the Larke Medal for the best division one player in the championships.
Vic Metro defender Michael Hurley was also excellent down back and he was duly rewarded with his side's most valuable player award.
One of this year's top draft prospects, Daniel Rich, was outstanding with 23 touches, while Clancee Pearce – who was Western Australia's most valuable player – was his side's leading ball-winner with 26 disposals. Chris Yarran also chipped in with three goals.

Country defeated Tassie 22.6 (138) to 6.4 (40) after piling on 15 goals to three in the second half.
It was 7 goals to 6 in the 3rd quarter, then VC kicked the last 15 goals. :o
-
I went to the Dome today and watched the last half of the Vic Country v Tassie and all of the Vic Metro v WA. Not a bad day at the footy but unfortunately all 3 games were one sided especially the games involving the Division 2 states.
My thoughts on the draftees:
No Cotchin standout IMO but I'm more confident of us getting someone good with our first pick especially if we're after a tall. Not sure what they feed these kids these days but sheesh you forget how skinny U18's are.
Vic Metro vs WA
WA really lacked key forwards to kick to which forced them to go short and wide a lot. They relied more in Yarran, Jetta and spells from Naitanui as forward targets. Compare that to Vic Metro who had Watts, McKernan and Vickery when resting forward. So with that in mind:
Mitch Banner: Really liked his game. Was everwhere in the midfield, got heaps of it and used it well mostly and pushed forward to kick a coulple of goals. I had BOG today although the TV gave that to Watts.
Jack Watts: Hard to seem him lasting to our pick. Good in the air as well as ground level and can play high or low in the forward line. Not the outstanding game with just 2 goals (should have been 3) but clubs won't bypass him.
Luke Stanton: An outside type who got a fair bit of it along one wing in the first half that set up Vic Metro's victory. Not the type we need any more of.
Tom Lynch: Solid game and got better as the game went along. The only question mark over him is he is listed as 191cm so he's near that in-between height. I think he would need to settle in defence in the AFL.
Shaun McKernan: I think Watts is better at ground level but wouldn't be disappointed if we ended up with McKernan. A clone of his older brother Corey. Clean mark, kicked 2 goals up forward and played 2nd ruck. The best part of today was seeing him sprint 60m to forced a WA player into error that resulted in a shot on goal for Vic Metro. Started 25m behind and got within 5m.
Michael Hurley: Solid game as usual at FB. It looked as though WA were avoiding kicking to the forward he was on (started on Mitch Marsh who did nothing). Hurley then stood Nat in the second half and apart from giving one goal away never looked threatened. Hurley is ready made at 192cm, 92kgs so has the size over his peers.
David Zaharakis: Arguably not as silky smooth as others but knows how to get the footy in traffic and at stoppages and played a key role in the midfield for the first 3 quarters to set up Vic Metro's win. Pushed forward to kick a couple of goals too. A likely second round pick (pick in the 20s to mid 30s).
Taylor Hunt: Small defender but I would have in Vic Metro's bests today.
Sam Blease: Outside type/wingman. Lovely kick and runner with the ball and kicked 2 (should have been 3). Given we already have enough of his type we'll probably pass on him.
Tyrone Vickery: Exploded out of the blocks and set up the Vic Metro lead and was solid from there. Not a Kreuzer type who can ruck rove another ruckman/forward type at 200cm. Kicked 3. Probably moved into the first round picks based on today even top 10.
Nick Naitanui: To be honest I was underwhelmed based on today. What he did stood out (especially the leap and tap in the ruck as we know) but there wasn't enough of it for mine for someone touted as #1 pick. Still will go early but he'll need work. A project type.
Daniel Rich: I can see why the Eagles want him as he was WA's best in the first half and he'll go top 3 but he drifted out of the game after half-time when they tagged him. To be fair I think he was just outnumbered by a stronger and deeper Vic Metro midfield.
Chris Yarran: JON clone who played forward and has better skills. Pass!
Kane Lucas: Good first quarter but didn't see much of him after that.
Neville Jetta: Clone of Leroy at Essendon.
Michael Walters: Another small indigenous West Australian who got a fair bit of it today and would have been in WA's bests for mine. Played off a HBF and wing. Again not the type we need.
Vic Country vs Tassie
Less standouts in this game for mine and hard to judge when Vic Country smashed Tassie from halfway through the third. Vic Country kicked the last 15 goals to win by 98 points.
John Butcher: - main standout from the game but isn't eligible for this draft so one to look out for in the 2009 draft. Kicked 5 goals after half-time and like Watts and McKernan is very agile for a big guy (197cm).
Tom Rockliff: played as a small forward and was just too clever for the Tassie defenders. Good skills. Another 20-35 range pick.
Jordan Roughead and Andrew Browne: Both around the 200cm mark and just were too big for the Tassie boys in the ruck. Browne is already 202cm, 106kg :o. I bumped into another Tiger supporter I know who occasionally goes to training wants Roughead but I've got a feeling that maybe because we didn't get Jarryd in the first place.
Jack Ziebell, Steele Sidebottom and Nick Suban: For all of Vic Country's dominance in the second half I didn't think any of the 3 stood out as anything special. Decent but not special. Ziebell was the best of the 3 IMO and got a fair bit of footy but I didn't see the awareness/footy brain I would expect from a touted top 10 pick in phantom drafts. He often just bombed the ball forward when he got it. To be fair I only saw the second half and not the full game so that's probably why my thoughts are different to the AFL site report which has Suban and Sidebottom in the bests.
Ryan McKenzie: He's only listed at 175cm, 73kg but he looked a solid boy in the flesh and regularly broke tackles. Played as a small forward and was one of Vic Country's best.
Jamie Sheahan: Another Country small who did well up forward and got a heap of it. Agree with the AFL site report that he was second BOG behind Butcher. Probably a 40+ pick.
Aaron Cornelius: The only Tassie kid who possibly won his position. He played FF and looked the only real option to goal for Tassie when it actually went forward in the second half. Two quick goals from two strong marks dragged Tassie within 2 goals of ViC Country in the 3rd quarter before the floodgates truly opened and Tassie was blown away. He took another two good marks in the 4th qtr but missed both shots. I would stay away as he looks more a 3rd tall rather than a key forward. Stick to the better Division 1 talls.

Natanui looked like a wacko Richo imo, based on what i saw via the box of course.
Unco as ???

What did you think of McKernans kicking MT?
-
What did you think of McKernans kicking MT?
I've heard it can be ungainly but from what I saw today it was fine. I don't remember any stuff ups that stood out from memory. Now I would prefer Watts of course but I can't see Watts still being around for us so McKernan, Vickery or Hurley would be the next talls in line.

Overall I am pretty disappointed with the quality of players.
Yep it doesn't look like being a deep draft. Kevin Sheahan who is paid to be ultra-positive was on tonight and he had 55 draftees up for grabs.
The top 5 look like being:
1. Watts - Melbourne
2. Rich - West Coast
3. Naitanui - Freo
4. Hartlett - Port
5. Hurley - Essendon
6. ? - Richmond

Draft to feature tall and versatile youngsters
Emma Quayle | July 10, 2008
AS VIC Metro beat Western Australia in the final of this year's under-18 competition, the theme of the upcoming draft pool took further shape: expect the top part of the draft to be largely about tall players who can play in a long list of spots.
With No. 1 prospect Nick Naitanui up front, Adelaide recruiting manager Matt Rendell expects this draft to prove the best ever for talls, while Collingwood's Derek Hine said their versatility was what made the group unique.
Metro ruckman Tyrone Vickery, back from a knee reconstruction, was almost best on ground for Metro in its 29-point win, taking several strong marks deep in the forward line, while the skinner Shaun McKernan also roamed the ground well and got into goal-scoring spots as a forward.
The injured Ayce Cordy, another ruck prospect, would be a top five or 10 pick if the Western Bulldogs didn't have first call on him as a father-son selection, while ruckman/defender Jackson Trengove also shaped as a top 10 prospect before suffering a season-ending knee/hamstring injury that clubs will need to get a line on.
Jordan Roughead, the cousin of Hawthorn forward Jarryd, was a smooth mover for Vic Country in its big win over Tasmania in the middle game, while the South Australian side that thrashed NSW featured a couple of developing ruck prospects who may push through later in the draft, with Jarred Redden in particular playing well.
Jack Watts leads the key position prospects likely to be snapped up swiftly, with Metro full-back Michael Hurley still ranked highly by some clubs and South Australian forward Lewis Johnston continuing to push his first-round claims after barely dropping a mark, contested or otherwise, yesterday. Tasmanian Aaron Cornelius may also come into first-round calculations.
Naitanui's WA teammate Dan Rich is at the top of the midfield list, with the hard-at-it Jack Ziebell impressive again for Vic Country yesterday and his teammate Steele Sidebottom playing another composed game. Hamish Hartlett was classy again for South Australia, while Sam Blease took off on some eye-catching runs for Metro.
Rendell expected any club looking for a tall player to have a shot at a good one in the first round.
"It's the best tall draft we've seen and probably ever will see. There's probably four of the best ruckmen I've seen going around and in any other year they'd be going number one," he said.
"Those guys speak for themselves: Naitanui, Vickery and McKernan, and we've forgotten about Cordy because he hasn't played all year. You throw in Roughead and a couple of the South Australians who are coming from a fair way back, plus Trengove, and you've got six or seven good players.
"And it's not only that, there's a fantastic group of key position players as well. I just think when all is said and done it's the best draft ever for all players and to have the standard we've got in the one year is amazing."
Hine, who believes Watts also has midfield potential, said the adaptability of the group also made it a special one. "You look at someone like Tyrone Vickery, he's one of those talls who's a multi-position player," he said.
Metro's win was its sixth in eight seasons, and gave coach David Dickson, who has resigned after 12 years shepherding dozens of AFL players through their under-18 carnival, a perfect farewell.

Talent manager predicts bumper 2009 AFL draft
Amelia Harris | July 10, 2008 12:00am
THE raw talent of this year's draft is "in the ballpark" of the 1997 and 2001 drafts, AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan said yesterday.
The 1997 draft produced dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes, Trent Croad, Luke Power and Shane O'Bree, while awesome foursome Luke Hodge, Luke Ball, Chris Judd and Jimmy Bartel were products of the 2001 super draft.
Sheehan said the talent on offer yesterday at the NAB under-18 championships was exciting, but it was hard to pick the order of who would go in the top 20.
"Right at the minute we're really excited about the first 25 and the depth of the draft overall," Sheehan said.
"It will take a fair bit of sorting, even if you just put all the ruckmen or tall forwards into a group to separate all of (them).
"I'd say you'd have a debate about at least 25 as to whether they'd be in the first 12 for some people or whether they're out to 25 with others. It'll just be personal opinion."
Sheehan said he was particularly impressed with ruckman/forward Tyrone Vickery's game, which included 13 disposals, 12 hitouts, five marks and three goals, in Vic Metro's 29-point championship win against Western Australia.
"You hear a lot about the (Nicholas) Naitanuis and the (Jack) Watts, but he's a 200cm guy that can mark the ball inside 50, can play in the ruck, he's agile around the ground," Sheehan said.
Wingman David Zaharakis (18 possessions, two goals), midfielder/half-forward Luke Shuey (21 possessions) and forward Jack Watts (two goals), who won the Larke Medal for best performance throughout the Division 1 championships, were also impressive.
Potential No. 1 draft pick Naitanui rucked well with 22 hitouts and kicked a goal, while teammates Clancee Pearce and Daniel Rich were outstanding.
Metro midfielder Mitchell Banner said his game-high 28 possessions was his best performance of the carnival.
"I think I ran hard and ran well," the 18-year-old said.
"All I wanted to work on this year was to make (Vic Metro). Funnily enough, I made it, and to win it is just even better."
Underage Gippsland Power forward John Butcher booted five goals in Vic Country's 98-point win against Tasmania.
Teammates Nick Suban (18 disposals), Steele Sidebottom (17 possessions) and Nic Heyne (16 touches and 10 inside-50s) were also impressive.
Tasmanian midfielder Mitch Robinson lived up to his reputation as Hunter Harrison medallist as the best Division 2 player with 24 disposals and eight inside-50s, while forward Aaron Cornelius was solid with four goals and five marks.
Hamish Hartlett , brother of Carlton's Adam, starred with 24 touches, while forward Lewis Johnston kicked four goals in South Australia's 80-point victory against NSW/ACT.
Josh Duncan , Daniel Spiteri and Kade Klemke were good for the Rams, who were without captain and midfielder Ranga Ediriwickrama because of a hamstring injury he sustained in last month's win against Tasmania.

l agree with your selections,l think mckernan will be a tiger.
l think there will be a few good players will fall late in the draft.
because of there height (considered small) or very skinny.
one that comes straight to mind is andy hooper hes a small boy but is a real goer .
also just on suban hes a very consistent player ,usually plays well week in and week out .

Yeah it wouldn't surprise me if we went for McKernan too if Watts goes early as expected. I've got a feeling we'll go tall KPP with our first pick especially with Polak's football future unknown. I guess Vickery might be tempting for us too - 200cm ruckman/forward in one - if we can't trade for someone like Warnock. Of course all this depends on where we finish and if the draft falls the way as expected which it often doesn't as you say DRT. Last year a lot of people had Rance in the top 10 and he dropped our pick 18.
-
l think this years draft is quite a good one.
l hope the tigers pick up some more draft picks ,trading players like petts and raines who l think has fell out of favour .
l didnt rate raines very highly anyway,so he wouldnt be a loss to me.
if we are going to trade for warnock l wouldnt trade to highly for him ,hes still very unproven and what he has done hasnt been that impressive.
maybe a swap for jon.
theres quite a few good ruck types in this draft,l kinda like roughead he needs to bulk up but hes good around the field and takes a good mark ,not a bad kick either .
lm looking forward to trade week.
-
The only question mark with this draft is depth so the more early picks the better. It's going to be hard for us to get another 1st rounder but we maybe able to score another second rounder via a trade. Trading away picks should be a definite no-no. Let's hope the club has finally learnt that lesson after last year and before that ::). I can't see us getting Warnock in a swap for JON ;) (I'd do that trade in an instant if Freo were that stupid :lol ) but I agree we should only do a player(s) swap.

Hypothetically
If We had pick 6 and Freo had pick 3.
6 + Schulz ------------ Pick 3
Any takers ?

If I knew Melbourne were taking Nat at #1 then yes. That would give us Watts. I don't think Freo even for them would be that silly.

MT is correct. If Richmond wants Watts we have to get the pick before Melbournes pick.

UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIPS WRAP
Champion Data - Week 15
Here are some of the more notable DT scores from Saturday week’s U18 Championship games at Casey Fields.
TASMANIA
104 – Mitch Robinson:
He just keeps finding the ball. May find himself in contention for the Larke Medal, he’s been that good. Had 28 disposals and six marks in the loss to WA.
68 – Aaron Cornelius:
Was close to best on ground after quarter-time, finishing with 14 disposals and seven marks. Will want to end the carnival on a high.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
91 – Chris Yarran:
An absolute class act who finished with 16 disposals and seven tackles. Booted three goals and looks fit and firing for a big finale.
72 – Michael Walters:
He only had 12 disposals but made them count with three goals. Has been one of WA’s best this carnival playing as a small forward.
69 – Daniel Rich:
Played his best game for the carnival with 16 disposals and seven clearances, but failed to take a mark – bad DT play.
VIC COUNTRY
88 – Jack Ziebell:
Did someone say the name James Hird? Ziebell oozes class and is in the Hird mould – a ballwinner who is good overhead and brilliant at the stoppages.
85 – Nick Suban:
Yet another stellar performance with 19 disposals, four marks and five tackles. He loves to kick which is great for us DT coaches.
72 – Steele Sidebottom:
Another midfielder who is a likely 2009 debutant. Has a cool head and keeps winning the contested ball.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
71 – Hamish Hartlett:
Played his best game of the carnival and finally showed what he was capable of. Finished with 23 disposals and was all class.
61 – Rhys O’Keefe:
The running defender reminds me of Martin Mattner. Can push into the midfield and has had a consistent carnival.
VIC METRO
60 – Jack Watts:
He’s firming as the No.1 pick. Spent the final term on the bench and while he wasn’t dominant, still showed flashes of brilliance.
90 – Jordan Lisle:
Began the carnival as a key defender but went forward with stunning results – 16 disposals, five marks and two goals in a BOG effort.
73 – Michael Hurley:
The most reliable young key defender in a long time. Took seven marks and is a superb kick. A likely top six pick.
60 – Sam Blease:
He has pace to burn and was finally given some more ground time. Picked up 12 disposals and five inside 50s in an encouraging performance.
NSW-ACT
80 – Scott Reed:
He was solid down back again and keeps winning the ball. He’s improving in close and can win the hard ball. Certain Collingwood rookie for 2009.
71 – Kade Klemke:
Once again he read the play extremely well from defence and found plenty of the ball. Has had a sensational carnival.

UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIPS WRAP
Champion Data - Week 16
The carnival has ended, with Vic Metro taking the title with a win over Western Australia in the final game. South Australia ended on a high with two convincing wins in their final two games while Vic Country thumped Tasmania in their last game also.
Here are the key scorers from the final day’s play – stay tuned for next week’s full wrap of the overall points tallies for the carnival, which will be weighted to take into account the flat 20-minute quarters that were played throughout the five games.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
101 – Hamish Hartlett:
Was superb in the final game with 24 disposals and eight inside 50s. He’s a certain top-10 pick.
97 – Lewis Johnston:
Ended a great carnival with 18 disposals, eight marks and four goals.
NSW-ACT
75 – Scott Reed:
Has improved considerably this year and just keeps racking up the big scores.
52 – Kade Klemke:
Not as prominent as previous games yet still one of the Rams’ best.
TASMANIA
92 – Mitch Robinson:
Ended a brilliant carnival with 24 disposals and eight inside 50s. Consistent throughout the five games.
71 – Aaron Cornelius:
Finally hit back with some form in the final two games, booting four goals in the last match.
VIC COUNTRY
84 – Jamie Sheehan:
The nippy small forward was lively throughout, picking up 21 disposals and three goals.
59 – Jack Ziebell:
Wasn’t as prolific as usual yet still scored well. An absolute class act.
73 – Steele Sidebottom:
The kid has plenty of smarts and will be one to keep an eye on come the 2009 preseason.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
87 – Clancee Pearce:
Another strong showing off half-back with 26 disposals and six marks. Was the deserving winner of Western Australia’s MVP for the carnival.
78 – Nicholas Naitanui:
Had only nine disposals but won 22 hitouts. Will he go No.1? Depends on who finishes last.
81 – Daniel Rich:
Finally did some of the things we knew he could. Still a certain early pick and probably the best chance to play AFL in 2009.
VIC METRO
124 – Mitch Banner:
This kid is an absolute ball-magnet as evidenced by his score in this game. Definitely one to keep in mind.
101 – David Zaharakis:
Overlooked in last year’s Draft, this pacy wingman will be snapped up for sure in 2009. Finds plenty of the ball and is a goal-kicker.
97 – Tyrone Vickery:
This mobile ruckman is superb overhead and was best afield in the final with five marks and three goals. Not sure if he’ll be ready next year though.

UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIPS WRAP
Champion Data Newsletter Week 17
The Under-18 Championships are over and it’s now time to look at the whole carnival and who were the top performers from a DT point of view. Due to the disappointing fact that quarters lasted only 20 minutes throughout the entire
Championships, I have scaled the scores up so that they reflect what a player would have averaged in AFL length quarters which run for an average of 30 minutes.
Expect more of this information relating to TAC Cup, WAFL and SANFL towards the end of the season when I’ll update you on who is most likely to step up and be the Rhys Palmer of 2009.
Mitch Robinson – Tasmania (Actual avg. 85, Scaled 128): He won the most disposals of any player throughout the carnival and was named in the best for Tassie in the VFL on the weekend. If drafted by a club who struggles in 2009 he’s a certain high scorer. Could be a Heath Scotland of the future.
Jack Ziebell – Vic Country (76, 114): He missed the opening game but after that produced some super performances. I am a huge fan and am sure he’ll get drafted in the top 10. Will have an impact in 2009.
Mitchell Banner – Vic Metro (75, 113): His 124-point game in the Grand Final bumped him up but he is a proven prolific ball-winner. While he lacks height he knows how to find the ball and will get some games in 2009 if he goes to a struggling side. Loves to kick – great DT play.
Michael Walters – Western Australia (73, 110): He scores extremely high for a half-forward and could be a Cyril Rioli of 2009. Can play midfield and picked up 39 disposals and 143 DT points in an Under-16 Championship game in 2007.
Scott Reed – NSW/ACT (72, 107): He was a revelation in defence throughout the carnival, performing well in all games and showing plenty of improvement. He laid the second-most tackles of anyone and will be at Collingwood in 2009. We all know how good they are at developing youngsters so don’t be surprised to see him at AFL level.
Matt DeBoer – Western Australia (71, 107): He’s a proven ball-winning machine who is playing senior WAFL football for Claremont. He won the second-most disposals at the carnival (101).
Ranga Ediriwickrama – NSW/ACT (71, 106): He scored 100 and 108 in the opening two games but his average was screwed when he went off injured early in the third game. He’ll be a Geelong rookie in 2009 and if/when he gets his chance, he’s sure to score well.
David Zaharakis – Vic Metro (70, 105): A quick wingman who can win plenty of the ball, if he ends up at a club like West Coast he will relish running around on Subiaco.
Nicholas Naitanui – Western Australia (70, 105): Won a truckload of hitouts and laid the third-most tackles of anyone. He doesn’t take many marks and rarely kicks though, which greatly depreciates his DT potential. Let’s see if he can develop that side of his game before we consider him in 2009.
Tyrone Vickery – Vic Metro (69, 103): For a ruckman coming off a knee reconstruction, Vickery’s performances made everyone stand up and take notice. He’s a huge chance to go in the top five in the draft, however I think he’ll get limited AFL opportunities in 2009.
Steele Sidebottom – Vic Country (68, 102): Steele is a super talent who has enormous DT potential for 2009. He’s dominating in the TAC Cup so if he goes to the right club, snap him up early because he will score highly.
Daniel Rich – Western Australia (68, 102): Wasn’t as prolific as we thought yet still found plenty of the ball and scored well. He’ll have two seasons of senior WAFL football under his belt when he gets drafted so he’s still the likely best choice to produce Palmer-like numbers in 2009.
Luke Shuey – Vic Metro (68, 102): Another midfielder who has proven he can be a huge ball-winner. He topped 100 DT points in four of his 10 games in the TAC Cup last season and should see some senior AFL action in 2009.
Jack Watts – Vic Metro (67, 101): I think he’ll end up at Melbourne and if he does, he’ll play close to a full season in 2009 I would think. Expect Matthew Pavlich-like numbers for the future as he can play key forward and potentially midfield as well, but don’t expect too much in 2009 – the talls take a while.

Zaharakis is a very good young player. Definitely should have a look at him, if he falls to the third round (or even maybe the 2nd round) i'd snap him up without hesitation, though he could push as high as a late 1st rounder IMO. Did athletics with him a few years back and he is a jet, absolutely flew out of the blocks. Generally speaking has tidy kicking skills, though can spray a few. But the best thing about him is the way he loves to use his pace and take players on. Can be very damaging with low number disposals.
Also went to school with Luke Shuey. Good solid rover who knows how to find the ball. Probably would be looked at from after the 3rd round. Luke Stanton is another who may get drafted. 190cm, athletic and mobile, okish skills. Hasn't really put in strong performances over the last two years, but has tempting potential.

Stanton is that in-between height but I was impressed with Zaharakis too bluey. Knows how to find and win the footy in traffic. Definitely someone to look at in the 2nd round if he's still around at our pick.

I posted this on another thread but I really think we need 2 picks in the top 15 this year.
Newman + 2nd rounder for a 1st rounder would do it imo.
That way we can get Vickery and one of Ziebell/Johnston/McKernan.
Also trading Schulz and King for picks would be awesome.
I'd love to see us top up this draft.

I can't see us scoring another top 10 pick to score those kids you've mentioned though. Perhaps as you say Cotch upgrade a 2nd rounder into the teens but not top 10. Then again some had Rance in their top 10 and he fell to our pick 18 so you never know. The main thing for us is to keep our picks and try to trade for more early picks as you've suggested Cotch.
Going by reports Vickery was very impressive again today.
