Brilliant, we may go into the 2nd round of the NAB Cup for the first time since Wallace arrived at Tigerland
Closest we ever got was choking against Collingwood the first year he was in charge

So, theoretically.
We could play The Pies in the 2nd round at Telstra ??

A bit squishy.

In theory we could also end up back at Subiaco to play the Eagles for the 2nd week in a row

A pretty good draw actually if as you say Infamy the Eagles knock off the Pies. No Hawks, Cats, Crows or Swans before the GF either if we make it that far. Mind you playing in the Perth heat in mid Feb especially if it's back to back could knock the players around a bit. Hopefully playing at twilight/night takes the edge of the heat.

The only thing I'm ticked off about is it isn't on free to air tv with it interstate.

With our form there lately, Subiaco is like a 2nd home ground
Bring it on I say, a team needs to get used to travelling anyway, plenty of interstate sides do it every 2nd week and lately have won most of the flags in the last decade

Last year Freo were 'dangerous' and now Mark Harvey says they're "matadors" lol.

Harvey's also invited Cousins to play so Freo get a full house at Subi.

Well for purely selfish reasons, I'm hoping we get beaten by one point in round one so I can drive down to Manuka again to see the boys play.  :outtahere

I don't really care much for the preseason cup as far as making the finals goes. As long as our boys get game time under their belts through either comp before round one I'm happy.

More rough treatment from Dockers in store for Cousins
PerthNow | Glen Foreman | January 06, 2009 05:25pm WST

DOCKERS coach Mark Harvey says Ben Cousins will receive the same rough treatment he always does from the club when he returns to Subiaco Oval.

The former Eagle was often tagged heavily when the two WA sides clashed, a tactic that commonly resulted in tempers flaring.

And Harvey suggested his club's treatment would not change now that Cousins had joined the Richmond Tigers.

“He'll be . . . It’ll be, ‘Welcome back, Ben’.”

Who do they have left to rough him up anyway?? Solomon?? LMAOOOOOO  With Carr and Johnson gone, Solly is the only hot head nutcase suspension magnet they have left and he has seen better days. On paper they look as soft as a Pascall's.
I think they should be worried about what sort of treatment Palmer will get. Put Hislop on him and watch the tears from the Freo fans.

Lost to the Saints in the last 8.

Adrian Anderson's proposed rule changes that will be trialed in the NAB Cup...

THE RULE CHANGES FOR POTENTIAL INTRODUCTION IN 2009 PREMIERSHIP SEASON

* A free kick will be awarded for any deliberate rushed behind.

* Umpires to award a 50-metre penalty in addition to a free kick for players who tackle or hold an opponent after the opponent has disposed of the football, for the purpose of preventing them from taking part in the next act of play.

* Continuation of the trial of the no-go zone behind umpires at centre bounces.

SOLELY ON TRIAL FOR NAB CUP

* Clubs will be allowed eight players on the bench, but two of those will be nominated as designated substitutes, with the players they replace unable to return to the field.

I like this rule.  This is one of Terry's ideas.  In today's game a bench of 3 vs a bench of 4 because of injury is a huge disadvantage.  This will even out the game a lot better.

Fremantle tagger Ryan Crowley to continue rough game
Kim Hagdorn | February 07, 2009 05:30pm

RUGGED Fremantle tagger Ryan Crowley knows he isn't popular. But he still doesn't plan to roll out a "welcome home" mat for Richmond's Mark Coughlan.

Coughlan, 26, is tipped to resurrect his stalled career as his Tigers confront Crowley and the Dockers in a highly anticipated NAB Cup clash.

Crowley is a candidate to take on the former Perth player, who has had two full knee reconstructions and a horror run of hamstring strains in his comeback attempts.

But the no-nonsense Docker won't be in a compassionate mood should he be asked to run with Coughlan.

"It's 'you versus them' once you're out there, so I'm not going to take it easy on him (Coughlan) just because it will be his first game back for quite a while," Crowley said.

Crowley flagged prospects of at least four Dockers making NAB Series debuts.

He had high praise for draftees Stephen Hill and Nick Suban, as well as rookies Greg Broughton and Matt De Boer, after making solid impressions in summer training.

No Hislop WAT?

No Richo either  ;)

Given Bowden the flick altogether or don't you think he'll play until later on in the preseason?

I think Sugar will miss given he's in the rehab group with a slight injury to his knee.

Cleve's going to have to step at FF after the intraclub that's for sure.

I've got Cogs as a sub. I just think watching him he isn't quite ready for a full game straight off the bat yet. There's plenty of time to build up his gametime so he's right and ready for round 1.

You'll probably be proven right WAT on Sunday and Cogs will play. It's just that I think he'll look underdone and may struggle if he plays a full game of NAB Cup after missing so much footy over the past 2-3 years.

Youth on show for Freo's NAB Cup opener

FREMANTLE coach Mark Harvey is preparing to field a young side for this Sunday's NAB Cup clash with Richmond, with captain Matthew Pavlich unlikely to play.

Harvey said he was monitoring the Pavlich's workload, but would consider naming him as one of two nominated substitutes.

Des Headland (shin soreness) will also be missing from a Fremantle side that Harvey estimates has eight to ten players still fighting for full fitness.

Prized draft pick Stephen Hill will play, as will returning midfielder Paul Hasleby.

Chris Tarrant, Marcus Drum, Adam Campbell and Hayden Ballantyne are also set to miss the encounter.

Richmond have already declared Ben Cousins a non-starter for the game, but Harvey said he had a plan just in case the 238-game veteran did take to the field.

"If he does I might give a young player a job on him just to see how he's coping with the real AFL if you know what I mean," Harvey said.

I really think Cog's will line up MT, you have said all along that you don't think he will, do you know something we don't??
I've got Cogs as a sub. I just think watching him he isn't quite ready for a full game straight off the bat yet. There's plenty of time to build up his gametime so he's right and ready for round 1.

Totally agree MT, But maybe a roll off and on the bench will help him game time so he is ready for round one. I don't think they will play him the whole game.

Title: Post and Nahas to play against Freo
Post by: one-eyed on February 11, 2009, 02:08:04 AM
From today's Herald-Sun:

The Tigers will take a strong line-up to Perth, with senior stars Matthew Richardson, Nathan Brown and Troy Simmonds all making the trip.

Despite the travel, Monaghan said the key trio didn't want to be rested. "They were pretty keen to have a run and we were pretty keen to field a reasonably strong side," he said.

Monaghan said Ben Cousins had pulled up well from his hitout in last week's intraclub match. "He just needs a little bit more conditioning. Our aim is to play him in Round 2 of the NAB Cup," he said

Kane Johnson, Trent Cotchin and Jordan McMahon will miss.

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl/story/0,26576,25037743-19742,00.html

From today's Australian:

Richmond, which has not won a NAB Cup match under Wallace, will play newcomers Jayden Post and Robin Nahas against Fremantle. Post, who can play tall at either end of the ground, was the Tigers' second choice in last year's national draft, while former Port Melbourne small forward Nahas will start the year on the rookie list.

Others who will not play on Sunday include Ben Cousins, Kane Johnson, Jordan McMahon, Trent Cotchin and Jay Schulz. But Wallace said all bar Cotchin would be available for the start of the premiership.

Richmond won both its home-and-away matches against Fremantle last year, including a 64-point win over the Dockers at Subiaco Oval in round four.

It was Tezza  :thumbsup

He said that is the reason the Tiges tried to get Polak put on the rookie list as opposed to the LT injury list.

If Polak is able to play just 1 quarter of ressies footy at Coburg then he would because it will aid his recovery and on the rookie list he would be able to do that on the LT injury list he wouldn't be able to play for 8 weeks. Tezza went onto to say that is a major thing they are considering at the moment do they or don't they (put him on the LT list)

I reckon I know my footy pretty well and there are 12 players on Freo' list that I have never heard of or have yet to see play senior football.
That's quite a chunk of that squad, compared to us I think if we dont win there will be questions asked ??
In saying that I believe we will account for them comfortably. To put a number on it I would say 48 points with Deledio, Foley, Nahas, Morton & Graham best players.

Subiaco holds no fear for Tigers
Justin Chadwick | February 14, 2009 - 2:04PM

Richmond will be aiming to win their third game on the trot at Subiaco Oval when they open their AFL pre-season campaign against the Dockers in Perth on Sunday.

The Tigers, possessing a host of fleet-footed midfielders, destroyed the Dockers to the tune of 64 points at the venue in round four last year before returning in round 15 to hand the Eagles a 77-point spanking.

"It wasn't too bad last year, we were lucky enough to come away with two wins," Tigers captain Nathan Foley said.

Richmond have named a strong line-up for Sunday's match against the Dockers.

Although former Eagle Ben Cousins, Mark Coughlan and Kane Johnson won't take to the field, Richmond have included the likes of Matthew Richardson, Nathan Brown, Brett Deledio, Richard Tambling and Troy Simmonds in a near full strength squad.

Former Bomber Tom Hislop and former Power midfielder Adam Thomson will debut for the Tigers if they make the final cut.

Fremantle, minus skipper Matthew Pavlich and Chris Tarrant, have named a host of youngsters, led by last year's No.3 pick in the national draft, Stephen Hill.

Paul Hasleby has been included for his first game since rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in last year's pre-season competition.

Foley said the team would treat the pre-season competition seriously - without going overboard.

"I think it's the aim to go out and win every game we are presented with," Foley said.

"We are lucky to have a squad that's up and running at the moment so it gives us the luxury of having a large list to pick from.

"We finished really strongly last year, particularly in the second half (of the season).

"We've had a good, solid pre-season and been lucky to have the majority of the group complete a fair bit of the pre-season so taking that in to 2009 will be exciting.

"it's always hard to compare from pre-season to pre-season.

"But blokes who are getting their third and fourth consecutive pre-season in - it's invaluable and come the season proper the blokes who have done that will reap the rewards."

Wallace turns to Cuz for inside word
Justin Chadwick | February 14, 2009 - 5:14PM

Ben Cousins won't take the field against the Dockers on Sunday but Tigers coach Terry Wallace will pick the brain of the former West Coast star as Richmond look to consolidate their recent good AFL form at Subiaco Oval.

Richmond, possessing a host of fleet-footed midfielders, destroyed the Dockers to the tune of 64 points at Subiaco Oval in round four last year before returning in round 15 to hand the Eagles a 77-point spanking.

Wallace felt there were still lessons to be learnt about how to play at the long and narrow venue and said Cousins, who played 110 times at the ground during his glittering 12-year career at West Coast, would provide valuable input.

"Obviously he wants to be involved as much as what he possibly can," Wallace said after training on Saturday.

"I thought there was a couple of things (he could add), all to do with the playing style here and what works and what doesn't.

"We've got a team meeting tonight and he'll probably have some involvement in that."

Richmond have named a strong line-up against the Dockers, with only Cousins, Mark Coughlan, Trent Cotchin and Kane Johnson the notable absentees.

Fremantle, minus skipper Matthew Pavlich and Chris Tarrant, have named a host of youngsters, led by last year's No.3 pick in the national draft, Stephen Hill.

Paul Hasleby has been included for his first game since rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in last year's pre-season competition, while David Mundy will captain the side in Pavlich's absence.

Wallace said he would use the hit-out to assess the form of some of his fringe players.

"I reckon we've got five guys who I need to see who virtually have hardly played, or not played at all," Wallace said.

"That's why you love coming to these games, to see whether someone can step up.

"Is there one of your boys who can make a difference?

"One that comes to mind is Angus Graham.

"We've struggled for an extra ruckman, we know Freo have got reasonably strong, good ruckmen and Angus played at the end of 2007 and then did an ankle, so we virtually lost him for 12 months.

"So to see how he's come back with another summer under his belt - as a coach that's the sort of stuff you are looking to see, whether he can add anything to the squad for the year."

If we were to win the whole thing that would be OK but I don't want to go well in the NAB cup and then have a average H&A season... Certainly from doing well in the NAB cup it would likely boost membership sales etc but....the last time we went well in the NAB Cup we had a shiit season.....

The season proper is what really matters to me

We've had 56 more possessions but falling down as we go forward.

Lids     16
Foley   15
Jacko   14
Browny 13
Tuck     13
Richo    12

Disappointing none of the newbies or young guys we expected to have an impact has done so.

We've overused the handball. 30 more than we've kicked. We looked tired towards the end of that half and our skill level really dropped away.

Tambling has proved why he will be the next JON on our list.

geez he is so poo.

Different year same technique for our beloved Richard. He should put us out of our misery and move back to Darwin.

Jack is playing well i thought. He is tough at it. Jackson too. Bowden is for the tip as is Angus kennet or whatever his stuffin name is.

Brown class.

bottom line is i see exactly what i saw last year. Scratcy football always looking rushed our players.

Very Rusty, I still don't like some of our forward options though.

Don't really care if we lose this, having said that I would rather win it than not.

But we must, must, must beat Carlton in round 1

Tambo has been subbed off. Seemed underdone. I wonder if he is still struggling with that groin injury he had before Christmas. Not sure who has come on.

Browny looks our only reliable forward target. Cleve, Mitch and Jack (quieter that qtr) need to step up.

Super impressed with Jacko's game. He was in everything.  :thumbsup

Richo as usual...Superfreak   :clapping

We did faff around a bit but I think that was the early season cobwebs so not too concerned.

Jack and Morts were also very good. So relieved to see Jack back out there after he limped off in the last qtr.

Obviously Freo got delivered to them a few 9 point free kicks and a couple from dubious decisions. In the normal home and away we would have won by more with 13 goals to 10.

The first half was the problem. Far too much nothing handball. We had 60 more possies yet were 4 goals down. After half-time we kicked 9 goals to 3 so our possession count which was more direct fitted our dominance for most of the second half.

Without that supergoal crap we would have won by 15 points.

we have no "Tall Forwards!"

Reiwoldt was terrific

Foley was brilliant

Richardson sensational on the wing!

Jackson was "GOOD - OK". when he starts hitting targets, Jackson will be a lot better.

Hughes - so disappointing! though Richmond doesn't have a forward plan kicking it too tall forwards on the lead, so it isn't his full fault. Cleve needs to get some pace!

Bowden - what the f*** does he like stuffing it up for Richmond?

McGuane - gave away free kicks, but has that "tough" side on him which i like!

Hislop - not in Richmond's best 22!

Raines - great to see some of his runs! but sometimes he has got to take the first option.

Nahas - kicked a curial goal, which was great for his confidence.

Edwards - can play! great skills!

Morton - kicked three goals which were at important stages. but i think when he gets more confidence taking high marks. Morton will kick 5-6-7 one match.

Post - didn't play liked we hoped. but he should be up forward. used around the ground. first match with the nerves, can understand. but you can just tell if you get 20 - 30 matches in him. Post will impact!

Brown - needs more speed!

i don't think Richmond was totally lucky. i think Fremantle are lucky Richmond doesn't know how to put teams away properly! and those nine-point goals killed us especially when Fremantle won 2 or 3 of them from free kicks!

was the umpiring a bit harsh on Richmond tonight? because we got a lot of frees against us!

Tuck - rusty! will get better.

It's only a glorified practice game. We still won playing only half a game after giving them a 4-5 goal start on their own dung heap. It's probably a good sign that we are so critical of a win and of a number of Tigers who were disappointing on the night. The win means confidence and momentum stays up yet the margin might knock some reality into the overblown hype so we don't get cocky. We've also still got Thursty, Cotch, Cuz, Cogs, Connors and Jordie to add to last night's side. Fit in Thomson as well plus trialing Vickery. Pressure from the rest of the list means you underperform then you're out.

Yep the first half we were crap. Stuffing around with overpossessing handball and only having 17 inside 50s from over 200 possessions  :P.  I bet Plough gave them a massive spray at half-time. The second half was decent enough as we stopped playing like millionaires and played with intensity and directness. We kicked 9 goals to their 3 and kept them to only 5 goals in the last 3 quarters of footy. Some credit has to go to Freo as well. They turned up to play and jumped us and their kids like Hill and DeBoer were impressive. Last night was far more intense than any of the other NAB Cup games so far. The main thing for me is we got a good competitive run into the squad and best of all got through without copping any new injuries.

Settle people...

I know we've had shiit seasons ::)

But after we got to the NAB Cup final the expectations were high that we'd carry it into the season proper we didn't and the season wasn't just a shiit season it was a really shiit season

And just on the game

1st glorified pracrcie game of the year

Played crap 1st half and won = positive

Tried to lose in the last and won = positive

Richo is a champion

Agree. That didn't add anything to the game. How fast does the damn game need to be?

Commentators were raving about the new rushed behind rule too. I'm in two minds. Ok, it had the desired effect and worked quite well but we have had rushed behinds for over 100 years, part of the game. I don't see the big deal. We'll look back at the games played last century and we will discover the players are playing something completely different. Our children won't understand the rules when they watch Bartlett and Hart carve it up in '73 / '74. Historically the old VFL and new AFL could be looked at as to completely different games. Is this a good thing?

If we were diabolical then St. Kilda, the Bulldogs, Brisbane and West Coast should be demoted to their state competitions.

I saw good signs, Edwards will be a gun. Whitey and Jacko got plenty of the ball, but need to use it better. Graham looks like he'll be at least useful if Simmo gets injured. Nahas is going to play round 1, he's exactly what we need. Polo showed some good, but some bad.

Newman is everything Bowden should be, this is why Bowden has never been captain. Newman is reliable and hard working. Bowden continues to butcher the ball as a veteran.

The one real negative for me was Tambling. That play early on when he grabbed it and took an eternity and was tackled was very frustrating. Now with our depth, he can't be gifted games and must earn them.

Just on another matter, Hughes was very disapppointing, its time to give some new kid a go. Dean Putt should be given a chance and Vickery to at some stage. We need to find a tall forward, and Putt whose been around now for a while needs to be given a chance.

Good post Wayne I agree with most of that.

I thought Jacko's game was great, I thought his second efforts and disposal was superb (apart from one or two times in the last quarter).  I thought Whitey was a bit off his usual standard though.

I thought our mids played well with Foley, Lids, Polo and Jackson having very good games and with other great performances from Richo, Jack, Edwards and Morton.  Apart from the umpires which were woeful in paying 50/50's in their favour and then similar 50/50's against us I am not too sure how we put in such an ordinary performance.

But as others have said it was only a glorified practice match and we got the win.

Damn right about those stupid stuffing umpires (or as my son used to call them when he was young vampires) fair dinkum useless, if that is the standard we expect for the year then we are in for a crap year of umpiring calls. Good win but not great, great comeback though, I don't know why everyone bags Gus and says how he will never make it, I thought his tap work was excellent. I really focused on watching him and I thought he actually tapped the ball to our midfielders more than Simmo did. Raines was great too as were the usuall suspects. I really can't make my mind up about Hughes..  not sure if he really want's to play because he doesn't look like it.

As I said in the other thread I thought it was a diabolical performance. Richo was sensational. Riewoldt is now coming along very very nicely. Morton & Brown need to kick some goals in each game for us to win. Post looks like he has potential but Hughes is a real worry, Bowden not being able to kick backwards or rush behinds was found out ... there were to many disappointing performances for mine. Anyway we move through to round 2, hopefully we can show some significant improvement.

With you there WAT, I kept an eye on him (not hard to miss with the shaved head) and in the first half it looked like he tried to get involved by dishing off a few handballs.  He also got a few bad deliveries after he had made good leads but in the whole you can see where the "needs to extract the digit" calls originate from.

Contact between Fremantle's Antoni Grover and Richmond's Dean Polo from the third quarter of Sunday's game was assessed.

It was the view of the panel that Grover contested the ball in a marking contest, with the aim to spoil the ball. Grover made contact with the ball in the first instance, before following through and making contact with Polo. The Panel deemed the action to be a legitimate spoil and no further action was required.

Polo has also appeared to have stepped up - I'm very excited about this! If he can earn his way into our increasingly potent midfield then we have another feather tp place in our cap.

Foley is back to his best and Lids, White, Jackson, Tuck and even Cousins will benefit from him taking the tag for them every week. You never know one, two or even three of the others may step up so much that opposition teams start to struggle with who they choose to tag each week. This is the sign of a truly good midfield lineup if this occurs.

Jackson is strong, quick and determined but he just needs to not panic, give himself an extra half a second before he desposes of the ball and his skills will seem much smoother.

Riewoldt was a huge plus for the game as was Raines though he is still too predictable for my liking.

The reason why we had so many 'Not 20m' calls last night is because this is how we have been drilled to beat the zone, with short accurate kicks. The papers decleared we were the team zoning last night but Freo used it too. Kicking long into a zone is footy suicide.

Richo.... :clapping

Bowden  :banghead

Gus finally showed promise.

Hughes  ??? Maybe we need to give Putt, Post or Vickery a go in the FF position because Cleve just doesn't know how to lead, shake a defender and get the ball. He can kick but he is just taking up space at the moment.

Nahas could be good. Looking forward to seeing more of him though the commentators loved using his name such as 'Godd to see Richmond kick goals out of Nahas...etc' which was amusing.  :D

We love to win tight games of late but I would love to see more spankings given out this year than tight tussels please Richmond.  :pray

you're kidding me. Grover had eyes for the man and not the ball, he was no where near the "marking contest"

And they wonder why people are like this  :banghead and think the system is screwed

You had the advantage of actually being at the ground, WAT so you probably saw a bit more than me but on what I saw on the TV I was pretty disappointed.

Gus for the most part was up against Kepler Braddley and really struggled around the ground. Simmonds seemed to take on Sandilands. As for his tap work - gee I dont' know but alot of them on the tellie looked like they went either to the advantage of the opposition or to a contest

As I said better to watch these things ive then on a replay so I reserver judgement wait and see

Last night wasnt pretty but it showed to me that the young guys have matured some what.  This time last year and the few years before that if they were behind by that much at half time it would have been all over.  It was an ugly scrape through but at least they fought it out. Lets see how we go against Collingwood in two weeks, that should give us a better idea of where we are at.

Also i was looking at the stats on the AFL site but one thing it is missing is game time, i know Tambling was taken off and interchanged with Post but what about Shultz and some of the others that have low stats, is there a better site to get this information?

I think WP when they said ball they meant eyeball as in Polo's  ::).

Very pleased with Polo's games although I was surprised with his stats showing so many handballs, still on a couple of occasions he went in very hard and I thought his game was very good.

The tribunal makes it up as they go. One week the head is sacrosant and next it isn't. Grover's clench fist from the front was worse than Maxwell's hip and shoulder but because Polo only copped a cut rather than a broken jaw it's all okay  ???.

The Herald-Sun usually includes gametime in their stats in the hardcopy paper version but not the online version. Maybe someone here who still has Monday's Herald-Sun could post gametimes.

Moore happy to get result in Perth
richmondfc.com.au
By Mic Cullen
6:21 PM Thu 19 February, 2009

DEFENDER Kel Moore says the excitement of finally playing competitive footy again got the better of Richmond on the weekend and almost cost them the game.

The Tigers snuck over the line by less than a goal against Fremantle at Subiaco on Sunday afternoon, but Moore said the team wasn't worried by the performance.

"Not too bad, considering it was our first main hit-out," he said after training on Thursday.

"I think a few boys were pretty sore because it was a pretty physical game, but it was good. We feel pretty good now.

"Everyone was just a bit excited.

"It was our first real game, and everyone just wanted to get their hands on the ball.

"It was pretty slippery out there, because it was pretty hot and humid, but we came out in the second half and we played the way we really wanted to play, and ended up getting the result.

"You do all this training over pre-season, and it was just good being out there playing against another team rather than an intra-club game.

"It was scrappy, but in the end we got the result we were after.

"Full credit to Fremantle, they played really well and they've obviously had a good pre-season as well, and they were very physical out there.

The 24-year-old said he was amazed by the match-winning efforts of Matthew Richardson, who is nine years older than the defender.

"He keeps amazing us with what he can do – he just keeps running," Moore said.

"He's a match winner, and I think that's pretty much why we won on the weekend.

"He's had a great pre-season as well, and he just showed what he can do."

At the other end of the experience spectrum, quicksilver small forward Robin Nahas, taken with Richmond's first pick in the NAB AFL Rookie Draft, showed good signs.

"We do have a lot of young guys that have just come in that are very exciting for the club.

"Little Nahas, he's something that the club hasn't had much of in the past, and when he gets his hands on the ball, nine times out of 10 it is probably a goal."

I just read that the free kicks in the game were even.

I couldn't believe it, it felt like we were given an absolute hiding in this department.  I suppose it was how the frees seemed to advantage the shockers the most with the number of goals they got directly from frees.  I am still of the opinion the 50/50's went terribly against us though.
