------------------------------------------------------------

RICHMOND is only percentage outside the top eight after running away from the Brisbane Lions in the final quarter to win by 31 points at the Gabba on Saturday night.

The Tigers finished full of running to kick six of the final eight goals after the Lions had drawn to within four points early in the last quarter.

They won 18.17 (125) to 14.10 (94).

While the final margin flattered the Tigers after a close contest for most of the night, it extended their unbeaten run at the Gabba to seven seasons.

Dustin Martin kicked four of his five goals in the second half in a performance full of class.

When the match was on the line, he put a space between the teams with two running goals from outside 50m in the final term.

After a quiet night through three quarters, Robin Nahas produced a match turning play midway through the final quarter, when his run-down tackle on Simon Black in the middle of the ground won a free kick.

The play was quickly transferred to Tyrone Vickery, who coolly slotted his fourth goal and gave the visitors a 10-point lead they would never look back from.

Brett Deledio added a 50m goal, while Nathan Foley and Nahas added others to put the nail in the Lions' coffin.

For the home team it was their third loss in succession but they did not go down without a fight.

While Richmond just shaded them in total possessions (330-315) and clearances (32-30), the Lions were in the hunt right until the end.

The jumped out of the blocks quickly to lead by 23 points in the first quarter, but not surprisingly Richmond made their move in the second.

The Lions have won just two second quarters this season - equal lowest in the league - and Richmond ensured that trend would continue, kicking five goals to three to take the half-time lead.

FIRST QUARTER

Hard, desperate football was the hallmark of the opening term and it was the Brisbane Lions that started better at the Gabba. The home side had the first four goals, to Rohan Bewick, Mitch Clark, James Polkinghorne and Jack Redden, as the Tigers, who lead the league in set shot accuracy, kicked three points from set shots. Shaun Griggs kicked the Tigers’ first goal late in the quarter and Tyrone Vickery followed up with another one soon after to cut the Brisbane Lions’ lead to nine.

Brisbane Lions 4.2 (26) Richmond Tigers 2.5 (17)

SECOND QUARTER

The Tigers kicked the first two goals of the quarter to take the lead for the first time but it was quickly snatched back by the Lions, courtesy of Mitch Clark’s second goal. Goals to Jack Riewoldt and Brad Miller started to turn the momentum the Tigers’ way, and an ankle injury to Clark and an interchange blunder that gifted Brad Miller a goal threatened to crush the Lions’ spirits. However, a captain’s goal to Jonathan Brown and another goal to Redden kept the Lions in the game at half-time.

Richmond Tigers 7.9 (51) Brisbane Lions 7.6 (48)

THIRD QUARTER

The Lions started the second half as they did in the first, with two goals from Todd Banfield and substitute and debutant Patrick Karnezis, who came on for the injured Clark. Karnezis’ goal was from his first AFL touch and he celebrated emphatically. However, the celebrations soon stopped for the Lions as Richmond kicked the next four goals, including two to Dustin Martin. Karnezis continued a promising debut, marking and kicking his second AFL goal from as many touches close to the break to keep the Lions in touch.

Richmond Tigers 12.13 (85) Brisbane Lions 10.9 (69)

FOURTH QUARTER

Brisbane Lions opened the quarter with two goals to move within four points of the Tigers, but their challenge ended there. Richmond piled on the next five goals, courtesy of Vickery, Martin, Foley, Deledio and Nahas. Pearce Hanley and Ryan Harwood kicked consolation goals for the Lions late in the quarter, and Martin kicked his fifth goal, from 50m out, to cap off a dominant quarter for the Tigers, who turned a close game into a comfortable win.

Richmond Tigers 18.17 (125) Brisbane Lions 14.10 (94)

Tigers claw to victory (Herald-Sun)

Richmond topples Brisbane Lions by five goals at the Gabba

    Greg Davis
    From: Sunday Herald Sun
    June 18, 2011 9:05PM

INSULT was added to injury for Brisbane at the Gabba.

The Lions lost star forward and ruckman Mitch Clark to a badly sprained ankle and had further salt rubbed into the wound as they suffered a 31-point defeat to the late-surging Richmond.

It was a see-sawing and spiteful affair between two young sides not in the habit of winning.

And it showed for long periods until the Tigers tore the Lions apart in the dying stages.

Richmond should have put Brisbane to the sword by midway through the third quarter, but the Tigers were horribly wasteful in front of goal and failed to capitalise on their dominance.

While Brisbane showed a tonne of fight and character, it lacked the polish to cash-in on its hard yakka on the numerous occasions it fought back into the contest.

The brave but ultimately beaten Lions got to within four points of Richmond in the final quarter, but the Tigers steadied and kicked away in style.

The final margin was not a reflection of how hard Brisbane battled all night.

The Lions were even scrapping with the Tigers before the first bounce and jumped out to an early 23-point lead after kicking the first four goals of the match.

But the visitors were too classy when it counted most and eventually turned pressure into points to run away with the game.

The loss of Clark was critical to Brisbane's hopes.

He would have been handy when the game rested on a knife's edge in the last term.

Clark had been Brisbane's most dangerous forward.

He played no further part in the match after he suffered a sprained ankle in the second quarter.

The 23-year-old landed awkwardly after attempting to tackle Richmond's serial pest Jake King on centre wing and he clutched at his right ankle immediately.

He was so close to the boundary line that he rolled himself off the field and appeared to be in considerable pain once he was lifted on to the Lions interchange bench.

He was carried down the race and eventually emerged wearing the red vest assigned to substituted players.
Clark will require scans this week to assess the extent of the damage.

Clark was replaced by debutant Patrick Karnezis, who kicked a goal with his first touch in senior football to put Brisbane in front momentarily in the third term.

His second kick at AFL level also was a goal - a rare feat for a first-gamer.

Before the game, Richmond was the most accurate team with set shots.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

EARLY on in this game, it was fair to say Richmond looked like it had fallen under a bus. Four goals down within 18 minutes, the Tigers were struggling to get their hands on the ball, let alone do anything constructive with it. Who knows whether a heavy travel schedule had anything to do with it, but they certainly looked in need of a jolt.

Two rare forward forays summed up a general lack of composure: first, Jake King bombed blindly from outside 50, earning a bake from a hard-leading Jack Riewoldt as the ball rolled through for a behind. Minutes later, Riewoldt had all the time in the world to find King on his own 15 metres out, only to snap the ball across the face of goals. The "Push-Up King" held his arms wide beseechingly.

The Brisbane Lions, for their part, looked like they were out to atone for some miserable recent performances at home, none worse than the first-half drubbing they suffered at the hands of Sydney two weeks ago.

The player most obviously on song was Mitch Clark, whose delight at threading a set shot from the boundary signalled his intentions.

By late in the first quarter, though, the Tigers were beginning to claw their way back, and seven of the following eight goals before half-time established a short lead. The catalyst was Tyrone Vickery, who was again proving an extremely effective alternative to Riewoldt.

Vickery's kicking is reminiscent of an old Collingwood stager, James Manson, but his fourth goal from a super mark halfway through the last quarter just about iced the game. In a scrappy, see-sawing and often willing affair, the Tigers prevailed in the end simply because they had a bit more class at crucial times.

No player exemplified this more than Dustin Martin, who was explosive with five goals.

Trent Cotchin was the smoothest mover on the field, and while Riewoldt didn't hit the scoreboard hard, he ran a fading Matt Maguire into the ground. In defence, Bachar Houli rebounded well all night, while special mention must go to Alex Rance, who held Jonathan Brown to two goals.

The Lions, again, were left to count the cost.

Clark was subbed off after injuring an ankle, while the energetic Todd Banfield ended the game nursing an iced hamstring.

Too much was left to too few: while Matthew Leuenberger was probably best afield over four quarters and did more than anyone to keep the home side in the contest. Mostly, though, they were able to hold the Tigers on a short leash.

The visitors helped keep the home side in the contest by making a truckload of unforced errors and playing in bursts, but two goals to Martin and another to Cotchin late in the third term opened up a 17-point lead that was always going to be hard for the Lions to retrieve.

They're still a work in progress, the Tigers, but increasingly, their versatility and forward options is winning them games.

After the match, Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss said the injuries to Clark and Banfield could keep them out next week.

''They're always assessed on Monday to be able to see the damage, but categorically they'll be out next week,'' Voss said.

VOSS'S CURSE CONTINUES

Poor Michael Voss must be feeling cursed for the number of key position players to have gone down with injuries this year. Mitch Clark was close to his side's best player in the first half, until he went down clutching an ankle and was immediately substituted out of the game. Todd Banfield joined him in the last quarter; they now join Daniel Merrett and Jed Adcock on the sidelines.

THE NEW KID

Plenty of players over the years have scored a goal from their first kick in senior football; not quite so many have made it two from two. Tall forward Patrick Karnezis did it last night for the Lions after being brought on in Clark's absence, and the efforts showed him to be both adept below his knees and above his head.

100 UP FOR FOLEY

After a couple of seasons ruined by injury, Nathan Foley's hard-earned 100th game was typically full of merit, winning plenty of hard ball in the middle, laying six tackles and capping it with a goal. His return to fitness is a huge part of the Tigers' climb up the ladder.
