Tigers run wild on Giants

RICHMOND       3.9   7.11   13.17   20.20 (140)
GWS                0.1    4.3      6.4         10.6 (66)

GOALS
Richmond: Riewoldt 6, Deledio 4, A Maric 2, Nahas 2, Vickery, Foley, Jackson, Edwards, Miller, Grigg
GWS: Smith 3, Giles 2, Wilson 2, Cameron, Hoskin-Elliott, Greene

BEST
Richmond: Deledio, Cotchin, Foley, A Maric, Rance, Nahas
GWS: Ward, Giles, Hoskin-Elliott, Smith, Cameron, Bugg

Reports: Folau (GWS) reported by umpire Nicholls for high contact on Jackson (Rich) in the second quarter.

Umpires: Nicholls, Jennings, Gleeson, Bannister

Official crowd: 4,222 at Manuka Oval

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BRETT Deledio made a stunning return from injury to steer Richmond to a 74-point victory over Greater Western Sydney at Manuka Oval to cap off a promising pre-season for the Tigers.

In his first outing this year following a hamstring injury, Deledio had 33 possessions and kicked four goals in Richmond's 20.20 (140) to 10.6 (66) win over a Giants side that will commence the 2012 AFL season against the Sydney Swans next week.

In an eventful afternoon, Israel Folau was reported for the first time in his brief AFL career, but there was very little in a slightly raised arm against Daniel Jackson in the second quarter.

Folau put his forearm near Jackson's neck in a minor throwing motion, but it would surprise if any further action was taken against the former rugby league star a week out from round one.

Folau - who showed good signs in the ruck late in the game - then came off second best after an accidental head clash with Tom Scully and was helped from the ground, but he returned a short time later.

The usual suspects of Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin and Nathan Foley were prominent for Richmond, while Jack Riewoldt kicked six goals in the second half.

Callan Ward, Jonathan Giles and youngsters Will Hoskin-Elliott, Devon Smith, Adam Kennedy, Jeremy Cameron and Tom Bugg stood out for the home side.

Excitement is building among the Richmond faithful after a strong NAB Cup campaign, which included wins over Geelong and Hawthorn, and Saturday's performance would have done nothing to diminish that hope.

The Tigers owned the footy in the first quarter, pumping the ball inside 50 eight times before the Giants had gone forward of the centre square.

GWS at least showed some good tackling pressure, but there was a clear gulf in class in the opening term as Richmond led by 26 points.

In an encouraging sign for GWS, both sides finished the second quarter with 4.2, but Richmond largely dominated after half-time.

I have a problem with the highlighted.... A gulf for all intensive purposes would be at least  perhaps 10 goals??  :lol

On another day yes but I'm also kind of grateful it wasn't 120+ points even though it would have been nice.
Let these big wins evolve with time.
Lets start with a breakthrough win against the filth and let our development and performance take its course.
We are definentely on the right track. :thumbsup

Richmond destroys young Giants in practice match by 74-points

RICHMOND star Brett Deledio has made an emphatic return for the Tigers booting four goals and picking up 33 touches in a practice match against GWS.

The Tigers ran away 74-point winners 20.20 (140) to Greater Western Sydney's 10.6 (66) at Manuka Oval.

GWS experiment Israel Folau was reported for high contact on Daniel Jackson in the second quarter.

Star forward Jack Riewoldt led the Tiger's onslaught with six majors, while Robin Nahas and Ivan Maric chimed in with two goals each.

The Giants were kept goalless in the first quarter but were able to match it with the Tigers in the second.

But a six-goal third quarter put paid to the Giants who could muster little despite the best efforts of ex-Bulldog Callan Ward and Devon Smith, who kicked three goals.

RICHMOND: 3.9 7.11 13.17 20.20 (140)

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY: 0.1 4.3 6.4 10.6 (66)

GOALS: Richmond: J Riewoldt 6, B Deledio 4, A Maric 2, R Nahas 2, T Vickery, N Foley, D Jackson, S Edwards, B Miller, S Grigg. Greater Western Sydney: D Smith 3, J Giles 2, N Wilson 2, J Cameron, W Hoskin-Elliott, T Greene.

BEST: Richmond: B Deledio, T Cotchin, B Houli, N Foley, J Riewoldt. Greater Western Sydney: C Ward W Hoskin-Elliot J Giles J McDonald.

Wasn't it Steven Morris that was a tackling machine?

No tackles today?

I know we had the ball heaps but combined tackle count for both sides was very low.. for those that were there, was this game high enough intensity to warrant a good hit out? or was it a rubbish low contact intra club type intensity?

Good to read no injuries and that Lids was on fire, always felt he was underrated by most including some of our own supporters, a lot of his good work that is equal or better than a Fyfe, Gibbs or Heppell, rarely gets a mention whereas that trio are talked up incessantly. Want him to explode this season and become a top 20 player bc he has the talent to do it.

Folau reported in Giants loss
David Polkinghorne
The Age
March 18, 2012

RICHMOND 3.9 7.11 13.17 20.20 (140)
GWS          0.1  4.3    6.4     10.6 (66)

GOALS - Richmond: Riewoldt 6, Deledio 4, A Maric 2, Nahas 2, Vickery, Foley, Jackson, Edwards, Miller, Grigg. GWS: Smith 3, Giles 2, Wilson 2, Cameron, Hoskin-Elliott, Greene.

BEST -
Richmond: Deledio, Cotchin, Houli, Foley, Riewoldt.
GWS: Ward, Hoskin-Elliot, Giles, McDonald.

INJURIES - GWS: Hoskin-Elliot (hand), Scully (cheekbone).

REPORTS - Folau (GWS) reported for rough conduct on Jackson and rough conduct on Deledio.

CROWD - 4222 at Manuka Oval.

CODE jumper Israel Folau is in doubt for Greater Western Sydney's historic debut against cross-town rival Sydney after he was reported twice in the Giants' 74-point loss to Richmond in the final NAB Challenge yesterday at Manuka Oval in Canberra.

And high-profile recruit Tom Scully will have a scan on his cheek after a head clash with Folau in the 20.20 (140) to 10.6 (66) loss.

A frustrated Folau - who finished with just five kicks and four hitouts - caught the eye of the umpires for two separate incidents of rough conduct in the second and third quarters. He had his number taken by umpire Mathew Nicholls when he slung Daniel Jackson to the ground a few metres off the ball in the second term, and then Michael Jennings put the former international rugby league player in the book for a clash with Brett Deledio in the third.

Folau was moved into the ruck after he clashed with Jackson and he slowly worked his way into the game, drawing praise from coach Kevin Sheedy.

''He actually played well in the ruck after that, we were really pleased with his ruck play. So I said, if things aren't happening for you get in the ruck and really give us [something] and he really did, he got some really terrific tapouts,'' Sheedy said.

While Folau never really fired, the same can't be said for Deledio. The Richmond midfielder booted four goals and racked up 33 touches in a best-on-ground display.

In his first game of the pre-season after suffering hamstring tightness, Deledio was involved in everything, running through the midfield and popping up in the forward line.

It would've left the yellow-and-black army salivating about the prospects of him spending a full season in the middle.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick mostly used Deledio off the half-back flank last year but he'll move into the middle with Trent Cotchin (25 possessions) and young gun Dustin Martin (21).

While the scoreboard suggests a one-sided encounter, Giants fans will take some hope out of the second term when they matched Richmond with 4.2 apiece.

''We broke even in the second quarter and I thought that was important for us. In the end we just gave them too many goals, and took goals off ourselves through play that we've got to learn from,'' Sheedy said.

The Tigers' first real test is against Carlton at the MCG on March 29, while the Giants have the Swans at ANZ Stadium in the season opener this Saturday.

Low intensity TM.  Carlton has hit us hard and played very tight when they have played us in the past. It has surprised us. I didn't think the Cats game last week or the Giants game were the ideal preparation for a blitz from the blues.  Let's hope they're off a bit.  Our structures and skills were good.  I don't think they've been tested under pressure yet.
