The Club's bottom line. Our supporters turning up is the only thing that's consistently reliable at Tigerland.

AFL attendance figures 2017: Richmond top, Collingwood, Essendon, Gold Coast Suns last

MICHAEL WARNER,
Herald Sun
7 July 2017

A RESURGENT Richmond is leading a booming season of AFL attendances — without a single Friday night fixture.

The Tigers have pulled crowds of 705,459 to 14 matches, ahead of Collingwood on 696,944.

Essendon, enjoying its first season free of the drugs scandal, is next best on 663,420.

Richmond’s home game average of 60,920 is the highest in the club’s history — up 48 per cent on last year when the Tigers bombed out of finals contention.

The Bombers’ home crowds are up by the greatest margin — a whopping 60 per cent.

“Essendon members and supporters are just phenomenal and continue to show incredible loyalty and passion,” Dons chief marketing officer Justin Rodski said on Thursday.

Gold Coast sits last on the league attendances ladder, pulling just 196,722 fans through the gates for all its matches.

North Melbourne crowds are also down with an average of just 22,858 fans attending Roos home games in 2017. Two “home games” at Blundstone Arena in Hobart are a factor in the low figure.

Etihad Stadium is hoping for a crowd of about 20,000 for Sunday’s Kangaroos-Fremantle match.

Up to 50,000 are tipped for Saturday night’s St Kilda-Richmond “Maddie’s Match” at the Docklands stadium.

“Ticket sales have been strong but there are still some general admission seats available,” an Etihad Stadium spokesman said on Thursday night.

Tigers chief Brendon Gale said he expected Richmond attendances to crash through the one million mark for just the fourth time by the end of the season.

Gale said this year’s Dreamtime and Anzac Eve games were the eighth and ninth largest home-and-away crowds outside of the Pies-Bombers Anzac Day blockbuster in the past decade.

This year’s Dreamtime at the ‘G game was the highest attended Saturday night crowd in VFL/AFL history

“We have an incredibly loyal and passionate fan base and the numbers this year prove that once again,” Gale said.

“We copped a fair whack when the fixture was done last year off the back of last season — we didn’t get one Friday night game — but we have worked hard to build games that engage our fans.

“Matches like the Anzac Day Eve game and Dreamtime have been built over time and are now firmly entrenched.

“Our fans — and the Melbourne and Essendon fans — clearly want to be a part of those events.

“Our match against Sydney at the MCG attracted our largest crowd against an interstate side ever and it broke the previous record by more than 10,000.

“The players love the fact their home ground is one of the great stadiums in the world and they get to play there in front of big crowds.

“It’s not something any of us take for granted.”

It's a gross misuse of the love and trust of members and supporters.

It's like taking advantage of a Yooralla bus
