Richmond to return to Sunshine Coast in January for preseason training

It appears the Sunshine Coast’s ideal weather conditions and excellent sport and training facilities are one of the keys to winning a premiership title.
Just ask the Richmond Tigers (AFL), Melbourne Storm (NRL), Sunshine Coast Lightning (Suncorp Super Netball) and New Zealand’s Southern Steel (ANZ Premiership netball) who all held their pre-season training camps in the region and went on to win national competitions in 2017.
And the Tigers loved it so much at the start of this season that they’ve already booked in for a return visit to kick off 2018.
Mayor Mark Jamieson said it was fantastic to see the teams who chose our region for their pre-season training camps come away with the silverware in their competitions.
“All four of these great teams have benefitted from our excellent sporting facilities, ideal weather conditions and an all-round great environment for players to build up their fitness levels and teamwork,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“With world-class training venues at Maroochydore, the Sunshine Coast Stadium and the only Australian Institute of Sport accredited facility at the University of the Sunshine Coast, our region is fast being recognised as one of Australia’s premier sports training destinations.
“This year, our region has also welcomed the Australian women’s cricket team and the Australian Diamonds netball team and the first of our pre-Commonwealth Games visitors from Wales and Scotland.
“We are delighted we can continue to roll out the welcome mat for a range of national and international sporting teams and being one of the key ingredients in their recipe for success.”
Richmond Tigers general manager of football Neil Balme said the new AFL premiers would be back on the Sunshine Coast in the New Year.
“The Sunshine Coast provides excellent training facilities, great weather and a fantastic environment for our team to build their fitness as we lead into the start of the AFL season,” Mr Balme said.
“We’ve certainly seen great results this year following our first year of pre-season training here, and we’re already looking to come back in January again to start our premiership defence.”
By beating Adelaide in the AFL grand final last weekend, Richmond joined a prestigious list of teams who have chosen the Sunshine Coast for their pre-season training camp and gone on to win the premiership, with the last five AFL premiers – Hawthorn (2013-15) and Western Bulldogs (2016) - also choosing the region as their pre-season training base.
Tourism, Sport and Major Events Portfolio Cr Jason O’Pray said the Sunshine Coast offers a great range of high-calibre training facilities for a wide range of sports.
“The training facilities we have in this region cater for more than 32 sports disciplines,” Cr O’Pray said.
“We’ve been working hard to build strong relationships with a number of sporting clubs over the past few years and we’re pleased to see these teams achieve sporting success.
“The economic and social benefits these pre-season camps bring our community are enormous, with the industry contributing more than $440 million in economic activity each year.
“Sport is an important part of our lifestyle, and it goes to show our sunshine and facilities really are second to none.
“Sunshine Coast Council is now actively recruiting for 2018 champions, so if you want to be in with a chance of winning next year’s national title, we recommend you book your pre-season training camp early, before your competitors do.”

Funny they don't mention the Crows 3 day trip there during the bye week. Suppose no one brags about losers. :shh
Just hope the club publicity and merchandising staff are gearing up for a HUGE Queensland visit.
There'll be a LOT of Richmond supporters wanting to celebrate (and buy premiership merchandise and memberships for 2018).
Could pay for the whole trip just with quality merchandise.
