Apparently Essendon did full-contact match simulation at training.

Brutal Bombers go all-out in ‘full contact’ training, but it’s left an ex-AFL coach ‘nervous’

Former Adelaide senior coach Brenton Sanderson says he’s “nervous” about the long-term effects of Essendon’s bruising training session ahead of a crunch game against Richmond in round 10.

Bombers players participated in a full-contact match simulation ahead of the Dreamtime game against the Tigers, following a week of intense scrutiny both on and off the field amid a horror start to the season.

Speaking on SEN, Sanderson said the tactic, while effective in the short-term, could have consequences down the line for the 16th-placed side.

“I’m nervous because – and I understand exactly why because you’re trying to replicate that hard edge at training that flows into the game – but unfortunately when you pull that trigger and you’re trying to teach contested ball and contest method at training under match conditions with mouthguards and full contact, there is a flow-on effect in a positive way to the weekend, but it can also have a negative effect as well,” Sanderson said.

“You take a fatigued group - If the game is close in the fourth quarter and you need run, you’ve had a big week on the track and obviously there’s contact injuries as well, I’m sure there will be a handful of corked thighs, corked calf muscles, and some sore bodies going into the game, which you don’t want.

“You want your 22 to be fresh and ready and alert and ready to play… (but) you understand why he does it.”

You always worry when you play a team smashed in the media all week in a big game everyone will be watching.

Once again we're everyone else's GF ::). No doubt they will throw caution to the wind and try to play fast attacking footy as they can't defend.

We need to come out firing ourselves and control the game on the scoreboard. Don't give them a sniff and put them back in their box. Similar to what Carlton did to GWS last week when everyone was expecting the Giants to be fired up yet the Blues kicked the first 4 goals of the game.

ESSENDON TO DEBUT SCALED BACK GAME PLAN AFTER GOING “BACK TO BASICS”

“Essendon has gone back to basics,” Sam McClure said on Sportsday.

“They told the board and their players that they are scaling back the game plan and are going back to the contested, effort and pressure-based side which made them a blue-collar finals team last year.

“Josh Mahoney and Ben Rutten have gone to the board and said they are going to strip (the game plan) back and re-align their focus because they’re not getting want they want.

“They are going back to the basics of what made them a finals team last year.

“That in itself isn’t dramatic or drastic, there are plenty of footy clubs (where similar things have happened). It does happen fairly regularly in footy.”

Full contact training haha.

The mid-season equivalent of 'training the house down'.

Round 10 Preview - Richmond vs Essendon

Andrew Slevison
SEN
20 May 2022

The Dreamtime match returns to Melbourne for the first time since 2019 after the 2020 and 2021 instalments were played in Darwin and Perth respectively.

Richmond won comfortably last year after a tight finish the year before and now have claimed 11 on the trot against Essendon in a winning streak that dates back to 2014.

The Tigers enter this edition of Dreamtime at the ‘G on the back of three consecutive victories which has straightened up their season, resulting in them sitting in the top eight.

Damien Hardwick’s side has unlocked their scoring potential in recent weeks, reeling off scores of 165, 113 and 117, to be the competition’s second highest scoring team (prior to the round) behind Brisbane with 899 points, at an average of 99.

On the other end of the scale, the Bombers have conceded three scores of 100+ in their last five outings and have the third leakiest defence in the league leading into this weekend. They are also struggling to put a winning score together, averaging just 76 points per game for the year.

Questions have been asked of Ben Rutten and his side in recent weeks and they simply must respond on a significant date on the footy calendar.

But with their attacking game up and about, and Tom Lynch in devastating form with 17 goals in three weeks, expect the Tigers’ streak over the Bombers to continue.

Tip: Richmond by 25 points.

Tigers bracing for fired-up Bombers

Richmond are expecting to face a hardened Essendon outfit in Saturday night's Dreamtime at the G clash.

Richmond are bracing for the full wrath of an Essendon outfit out to prove a point in Saturday's Dreamtime at the G clash.

"We expect a really hardened outfit," Richmond veteran Jack Riewoldt said at Punt Road Oval on Friday morning.

"Obviously, they're not going as well as they would have liked to be going but football is a fickle game.

"You're five per cent off or you're five per cent further on the results can change pretty quickly.

"We expect a really hardened Essendon Football Club to come out and fire shots early. So it's very prudent of us to be ready to go."

Bomber blitz is fun reading. Most of them are expecting a 100 point loss.  :rollin

I sincerely hope we don't disappoint them.

Although I'll tolerate a close game at half time followed by a 50pt loss and another week of media savagery.

Hard to see from where I'm sitting but did Lynch throw a punch in that silly scuffle after the weak 50m?

Umpires in fine form already tonight. Draper not pinged for dropping the ball 15 out and Dusty’s shot allegedly hits the post.

Yup should have been holding the ball before anyway. Then the video umpire geeeeeez. Plays for 2mins watching the same footage over and over. Why didn’t he play the edge? Isn’t that basically as definitive as you can get for posters?
