Barry Round RIP

(1/4) > >>

mightytiges:
Barry Round, the 1981 Brownlow medallist and one of the foremost figures in the reinvention of South Melbourne as the Sydney Swans, has died.

Round died on the Gold Coast, where he had been living, having entered palliative care recently. He was 72.

As a kid I remember him being one of the few opposition players alongside a Robbie Flower and Trevor Barker who was well liked and respected across the League.

Great man
Shattering for those that knew him

He was as nice a fella as you could ever meet

Gave the speech at my dads 50th .. Barry was amazing in the Williamstown flags in 1986 and 1990 .. his efforts in the 1990 VFA grand final were huge as a 40yo .. anyone that loves footy will enjoy the last quarter of that game and it’s on YouTube

When dad was president of Willy, the support given by Roundy was amazing when the club was on its knees and heading for collapse or a merger with Werribee

RIP great man and thanks for the early morning swims at Willy beach .. appreciate everything you did for me growing up ..

That was a famous VFA GF. That one and the 1982 Port vs Preston are the ones that I remember. Willy came from 4th too in 1990 IIRC? Still remember Rickman's big bomb with the breeze. In the days when the VFA, especially the best sides, had a number of top footballers including recent ex-VFL blokes still playing good footy. Too bad the game as a whole was in bad financial shape and a number of VFA clubs went under. Then the AFL came along and killed off the VFA including the name. At least Willy and Port are still around as stand alone clubs.
