Former Essendon defender and Coburg coach David Flood has been assigned the difficult task of filling the shoes of Calder Cannons coaching legend Robert Hyde.

Football Victoria and the Cannons today announced Flood’s appointment with the 2006 TAC Cup runner-up after Hyde’s record-breaking 11-year stint at the helm.

Flood, who played 54 games with the Bombers during the late 80s and early 90s, brings a variety of skills and knowledge to the part-time role, including previous experience with juniors through the prestigious AFL/AIS Academy program.

Flood coached the Coburg Tigers in the TRUenergy VFL in 2004-2005 following a three-year stint under Kevin Sheedy as an Assistant Coach at Essendon from 2001-2003.

He also worked in a part-time role at Essendon in 1999-2000 and was skills coach with the AIS/AFL Academy program in 2002-2003.

Meanwhile, Hyde has retired after coaching Calder for a TAC Cup record 218 games, leading the Cannons to five Grand Finals in the past six seasons for three premierships.

He mentored a number of prominent AFL players during his time at Calder, including Sydney premiership heroes Jude Bolton and Ryan O’Keefe, Essendon best and fairest winners Mark and Jason Johnson and accomplished Geelong trio Darren Milburn, Paul Chapman and James Kelly.

mightytiges:
Let's hope Flood does a better job at Calder than he did a Coburg especially if Calder is linking up with Coburg as a feeder  :-\.
