Bloody hell. Only 1 AFL listed KPD and 1 ruck. Neither ready to debut.

Guessing Miller didn't come good so he's out too.

Scrappy from us so far. More rugby scrimmage in our forward line which is very congested.

Bartlett snaps a point for our first score from six inside 50s (Pies have only has two for two scores).

1 - 7

Quarter time

Goals: Cumberland, Street, Hicks, McDonagh.

Maurice Rioli jnr out best so far. His workrate has been excellent and he's got two goal assists.

Wale-Buxton who came in today as our fill-in VFL-listed ruckman has injured his shoulder. So Samson will have to ruck alone for the rest of the game. Only two talls in our side now  :P.

Goal out of the centre to the Pies to start the 2nd qtr.

Martyn kicks to the space inside 50 and Scanlon marks 40 out. Kick falls short and is rushed.

Caddy already has 17 disposals and it's only early into the 2nd qtr.

Wrong option by Ralphsmith. Long handball instead of the 15m kick inside 50. Could have set up a set shot but instead under pressure snap is rushed.

Pies go coast to coast for a goal.

Then another from the centre clearance.

33 - 56

We have no talls aside from young Samson & Biggie. So we're getting smashed at stoppages in the middle and in the air down back.

We turned over the Pies kick into the midfield corridor. Cumberland finds Oakes 30 out directly in front. Misses.

We force the defensive turnover from the kick-in and Samson Ryan kicks the goal  :gotigers.

Rich  6.4-40
Coll   9.3-57

Breeze has really picked up (Pies have it this qtr).

Turn over the Pies with 30 secs to go. Cumberland finds McDonagh 30 out on the siren kicking into the stiff breeze. Misses.

Half-time

Richmond        4.1    6.5-41
Collingwood     4.2    9.7-61

Goals: Ryan, Cumberland, Street, Hicks, McDonagh, Bartlett.

Caddy with 19 disposals.
MRJ quieter that quarter although he did duck out of a tackle which set up a goal.
Cumberland pretty much playing FF. Done okay considering. Marked it 3 times.
Martyn would be the other one who deserves a mention in the guts.

We're fighting uphill with hardly any talls and no tall targets forward of centre. We either have to run it or shortpass it up the ground which often leads to turnovers the other way  :-\.

3/4 time

Richmond        4.1    6.5    12.9-81
Collingwood     4.2    9.7    11.9-75

Goals: Cumberland 4, Ryan 2, Ralphsmith, Street, Hicks, McDonagh, Bartlett, Cook.

We'll obviously that quarter was the Noah Cumberland show  ;D.
Eggy and McDonagh set things up off HB.
Street was able to nullify the Pies' rucks so we could win some clearances.
Caddy 27 disposals and Martyn 20 disposals (if only he could kick well he'd be a star) the best of our mids.
Ryan was better that qtr too.

The negative is the Pies have the strong breeze in the last and we're two down on the bench (lost two of our VFL-listed players to injury).

Pies got one against the run of play to make it a 1 point margin to us.

Hugo just kicked a nice banana from the pocket to make it 7 points to us.

Martyn, Caddy and Hugo have been good this quarter.

Lost it in the first half. Took a half to get our structure right after we lost that ruckman from the EFL. Can't knock the second half. Good to finally see some intensity & fight from a Tiger team after the past month. Just lacked polish. Add that BS 50m for tackling a 'mark' that went 8m!

VFL Tigers fall short against Collingwood

By Brenton Mann
AFL Media
11 July 2021

RICH: 4.1 6.5 12.9 15.11 (101)

COLL 4.2 9.7 11.9 16.10 (106)

Goals:

Richmond: Cumberland (5), Ryan (3), Ralphsmith (2), McDonagh (1), Hicks (1), Bartlett (1), Cook (1), Street (1)

-------------------------------------------------------

Richmond and Collingwood were locked in an old-fashioned, pulsating shootout on Sunday afternoon at the Swinburne Centre with the Magpies scraping clear by five points.

The budding Tigers, two soldiers down for most of the day with injuries to debutant Liam Wale-Buxton (shoulder) and Brad Melville (knee) were valiant until the final siren, the scoreboard reading, 16.10 (106) to 15.11 (101).

With Hugo Ralphsmith streaming inside 50, and options surging towards goal, the Tigers looked like snatching the win in the final moments, however, the dashing wingman’s kick just fell short into the waiting arms of a Collingwood defender.

Seconds after, the final siren sounded to signal the Magpies' win.

There was a sense of homecoming when Richmond returned to Punt Road Oval to face Collingwood in the Round 13 clash on a sparkling Sunday afternoon.

Given the ever-changing nature of the 2021 VFL season, the Tigers last suited up in their home black shorts on May 15, when they beat the Giants by 97 points.

Richmond donned the 2020 Dreamtime guernsey designed by Shai Bolton, in honour of NAIDOC Week celebrations and 10 years of the Club's Korin Gamadji Institute.

Maurice Rioli kicked one of the goals of the season last week to ignite the Tigers’ goal tally, and he had a direct hand in Richmond’s first today.

Rioli inspired his side, as well as the Tiger fans watching on from home and in attendance, as he surged the ball forward by hand, linking up with Matthew Parker, with the ball ending up in the hands of Garret McDonagh who pierced it through the teeth of goal.

The nuggety, dynamic small forward was effervescent and infectious in the first quarter, hunting the ball and anyone in a black-and-white jumper.

Rioli exuded irrepressible energy and inflicted ferocious pressure for the full four quarters, which is a testament to his growing aerobic capacity.

He’s sturdy through the core, rarely loses his feet in the contest, and keeps the ball alive at all costs.

Lachlan Street then cashed in on a front-half turnover and slotted the Tigers' second within a minute.

Noah Cumberland then extended Richmond’s lead to two goals, after shifting his opponent under the ball and securing the ball on his chest.

Cumberland converted his set-shot, and the Tigers were on a roll.

The high-powered forward put in his best performance in the Yellow and Black, ending with five majors.

Collingwood then slammed on three goals in quick succession before Rioli and Parker had a direct hand in the Tigers’ fourth major.

Parker roved to Samson Ryan at the centre bounce, streamed forward, handballing the ball to Rioli, who shimmied, then flicked the ball to Angus Hicks and the small forward snapped truly.

The Magpies held a one-point lead at quarter-time with both sides enjoying patches of dominance in the first quarter.

Collingwood kicked it up a gear in the second term, kicking a goal in the opening 30 seconds and then added another for more for the quarter.

Richmond managed two goals of its own for the quarter, with the first of them the result of some more Rioli brilliance.

Rioli received a handball under pressure at half-forward, ducked under a would-be tackler, sprung to his feet and pumped the ball inside 50.

The Tigers then forced a forward-50 turnover with Matthew Bartlett gladly intercepting the attempted clearing kick.

Bartlett eased through the goal, drawing Richmond within a kick.

Collingwood then went on a three-goal flurry before Ryan snapped his first of the game.

The five-goal second quarter equated to a 20-point lead at halftime, leaving the Tigers with plenty to ponder at the main break.

Richmond was stung into action in the third term, netting five successive goals in a 20-minute tirade and six goals in total for the quarter.

The Tigers had rhythm and flow with their ball movement and kept things simple when surging forward.

Cumberland provided a viable and dangerous target inside 50, kicking 2.3 for the quarter and setting up Ryan with another.

Ryan built on his strong performance last week, shouldering most of the ruck load as debutant Wale-Buxton injured his shoulder in the first quarter.

Richmond turned to the ruck combination of Street and Ryan, with both looking dangerous in attack and at the centre bounce and stoppages.

Ryan finished the game with three goals and provided an aerial focal point up forward.

Will Martyn is another Queenslander who built on his previous performances, bustling through the midfield, and provided great transition running between the arcs.

Martyn’s best work is done on the inside of the contest, with his confidence and status growing as the weeks roll on.

The big-bodied onballer is also providing polish with ball in hand, be it feeding the ball to outside and using the ball by foot when the Tigers are on the charge.

Our drafting the last 2 years has bern poor. Really poor.

Yes because those picked at 21, 40, 43, 44, 46, 51 and 54 should be out and out stars within two years of COVID affected seasons.

Spare me.

Exactly. You simply don't get access to the quality talent when you're finishing around the top for four years in a row.

Richmond VFL playing coach, Steve Morris, provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in last Sunday's loss to Collingwood.

Josh Caddy (39 disposals, nine clearances, seven inside-50s)

"Josh was the big, mature body that we needed around the footy. He fought incredibly hard to get the ball moving our way, had nine clearances and was very good for us on the day."

Will Martyn (31 disposals, 13 tackles, seven clearances)

"Will has really been working hard for us inside and is in great form. He’s a young player but doesn’t play like it. He tackled hard and won his own footy all day. Outstanding game."

Matt Parker (24 disposals, eight tackles, six inside-50s, six marks)

"'MP' put great pressure on and once again was an important part of our midfield. He brought others into the game with the use of his hands which was also great to see."

Derek Eggmolesse-Smith (23 disposals, six marks, six rebound-50s)

"Every time he had the footy on the weekend something seemed to happen. He was able to pick his way through the opposition defense with his beautiful kicking skills on multiple occasions and was very important to our offensive ball movement."

Noah Cumberland (20 disposals, five goals, six marks)

"Noah just continued to turn up and throw himself at contest after contest all day, and his third quarter in particular was sensational. He finished with five goals and made his presence felt in the forward half in a different role. The challenge will be for him to maintain the work rate and intensity that saw him get such great reward after the bye."

Maurice Rioli Jnr (17 disposals, 10 tackles, four inside-50s)

"'MJ' was ferocious on defense and used his pace and agility on offense also. Tackled hard and it was good to see his speed make a difference for us around the footy. Had a number of very exciting passages of play."

Samson Ryan (16 disposals, 20 hit-outs, five marks, three goals)

"Once again, Samson was faced with a big test in the ruck against seasoned ruckmen which is great for his development. Fought really hard and was able to hit the scoreboard for us."

Hugo Ralphsmith (13 disposals, four inside-50s, two goals)

"Hugo was not at his very best on the day but he was very influential in the final quarter. His run and carry stood out. He finished beautifully from the pocket to keep us in the game."

Bigoa Nyuon (seven disposals, four tackles, two rebound-50s)

"'Biggy' had a big task with Mason Cox playing up forward. It was a great challenge for him and a good opportunity for him to review his contest work and really grow from the experience."
