Ok guys Ive rung a couple of people in SA about draft prospects. This year instead of doing like a phantom draft Ive decided to put forward Recruiting Bands. These are players who are all around the mark of where our picks are at. Obviously some like Murphy will go early but nevertheless...
Pick 8 (Band 1) Mitch Clark- CHF/Ruck WA, Beau Dowler- FF Vic, Xavier Ellis- Mid Vic, Cleve Hughes FF/CHF-SA, Shannon Hurn Mid SA, Josh Kennedy CHF-WA, Marc Murphy Mid-Vic, Beau Muston Mid- Vic, Patrick Ryder- CHF/CHB- WA, Jarryd Oakley Nichols- Mid WA.
Whilst many want a kpp here, i wouldnt be surprised if Beau Muston is called by us if he is still available. Clark, Dowler, Hughes, Hurn...any of them could be picked by us. Kennedy, Murphy etc will be gone before.
Pick 24 (Band 2) Grant Birchall, Nathan Jones, Matt Laidlaw, Austin Lucy, Wayde Mills, Scott Pendlebury, Tom Rieschbeith, Matthew Spanger, Andrew Swallow and Brennan Mills from WA (My Smokey in this draft)
Id be ok with most of these
Pick 40 (Band 3) Andrew Ainger, Jon Cheetham, Ed & Nick Lower, Nate Roffey from Qu, Ben Taggart, Alan Toovey, Matthew Tyler, Luke Markovic, Hugh Minson from SA and Andrew McIntyre from SA.
Ainger, Roffey, Taggart Minson for me are best here. Minson is brother of Will and is regarded as a better footballer at the same age. 204cm and runs like the wind.
If anyone has any more thoughts id be pleased to hear them.

A lot of players in the pick 40 group will probably be around come the rookie draft!, 40 is too high!

We know Miller was very impressed with Muston but it would be a big risk to take him with a top 10 pick coming off a knee reconstruction. If Clarke or Hurn are around at 8 then that's the much safer choice.
What I'm about to say isn't logical and I've got nothing against Oakley-Nichols as such but I just don't remember one quality footballer with a hyphened name ;D. Just off the top of my head - Minton-Connell and Forster-Knight. Although Roberts-Thomson of the Swans did have a top GF.

Did Sprangher have OP this year?
In all phantom drafts I seen Nathan Jones and Andrew Swallow are listed as a mid-late first rounder. Jones is a odd size at 177cm and 84kg. A bit short for my liking. Swallow's kicking has been labelled as just serviceable.
Laidlaw may be more a footballer than a athlete but he sounds the best of the midfielders listed.
I'm not sure what position Rieschbeith will play in at AFL level. He's that in-between height and just a touch short for a FF.
Scott Pendlebury is interesting. Wingman/flanker from a basketball background who's switched back to footy and ended up playing for Vic Country. At 188cm/82kg he'll probably score a few games next year too. It'll all depend on how much further his skills improve.

A number of possible talls there but as Razor said later than 40 or onto rookie lists.
I'm not sure we need anymore flankers so that may count out the Lower's.
Lucas Markovic - Most people have him as a rookie chance but I seen a couple of posters on BF rave about him as a future gun FF and contested mark ???.

You might find on draft day some players in band 2 fall into the band 3 category...and in that instance we are obliged to take the better player. Muston is in band 1 because clearly he was a top 10 selection before injury, Miller has stated he wants a matchwinner...at 188cm hard running midfielder with speed...Maybe hes the one. A risk but you never know what theyre thinking.
My band 3 players are hope picks. kids with a bit of athleticism...might be cheap long term.

Agree Muston pre-injury was definitely top-10 material but the thing is we don't know how the knee has affected his footy in terms of speed and hard-running. Drafting isn't risk-free no matter who we pick up but personally I'd rather we try to minimize the risk.
It's going to be interesting where the likes of Muston, Dowler and Varcoe end up being picked at.

The Age says Muston will have an arthroscopy on his knee and will be set back a further 6 months. Rotten luck for the kid.
But another potential top-10 selection will be sent off for surgery, with Murray Bushrangers onballer Beau Muston to have an arthroscopy on the left knee that he had reconstructed in June.
Muston follows Oakleigh forward Beau Dowler and East Fremantle forward on to the surgeon's table.
Dowler is in a wheelchair after receiving multiple pelvic fractures in a car accident last month. Kennedy — who has risen to top-three calculations — will have a shoulder reconstruction, with his recovery to take 10-12 weeks.
Muston had been progressing well when his knee recently became aggravated. His recovery is expected to take a further six months.

Im sure knee arthrospocy's only put a player back for something like 3-4 weeks!

all these injuries will make this draft interestingto say the least. we will see which recruiting managers have the kahunas to pick these kids early.

Muston is in the Varcoe and now Dowler boat, rated top 5-10, but all with serious injury concerns.
I doubt any of these kids make it past the 1st round, teams like West Coast, Sydney, Adelaide and Geelong can afford to gamble with their late 1st rounder on one of these kids.

The Hawks probably also can take the risk with 5 picks in the top 22 or whatever.
Problem for us is we can't afford to gamble that much with our first pick.

Muston had an MRI scan last week before being advised by surgeon Julian Feller that graft had not bonded as well as hoped and would require another arthroscope to inspect the joint.
That will happen after Muston is selected next week.
Muston, 18, hopes it will be only four weeks until he can resume his rehabilitation from the ACL injury.

Club recruiters have been given the results of the latest scans of his broken pelvis. They show he will make a total recovery and immediately can start swimming, cycling and upper-body weight work.
It'll be interesting if Dowler now lasts to pick 8. Hope he does.

The Age says we're interested in getting Dowler but we reckon he'll be gone by pick 8 :(.
As such, there appears to have been no harm done to his draft prospects. Hawthorn, with selections three and six, is interested and Essendon, which holds pick seven, visited Dowler last Thursday. Richmond has indicated that it expects him to be gone before its first pick, at eight, but has also made overtures in the unlikely event that he is.

Deadly disease hits top draft hope

ONE of the AFL's hottest draft prospects, East Fremantle's Mitchell Clark, is lucky to be alive after yesterday being diagnosed with the deadly meningococcal disease.
Clark was rushed to hospital on Sunday after being seriously ill for two days. The 17-year-old had been on a weekend trip to Busselton, in the south-west of Western Australia, with friends when he broke out in a rash, started vomiting, had a fever and severe joint and muscle pain.
AFL clubs were informed of the drama yesterday and they will be given a full medical report today.
Doctors yesterday described his condition as stable and said that they expected him to make a full recovery.
