Key position scramble for Tigers as injuries begin to bite
Sarah Black
womens.afl
FEB 3. 2022
RICHMOND'S key position stocks have been exposed by injuries to just three players.
Full-back Harriet Cordner has been ruled out for the season after tearing her ACL, full-forward Courtney Wakefield's shoulder injury has now been classified as "long-term", while ruck Poppy Kelly is on the comeback trail from a knee injury.
The ruck situation is the least dire, with Gabby Seymour slotting back into her former No.1 role, but Wakefield's absence has meant skipper Katie Brennan (174cm) has been forced to take ball-ups when Seymour is resting.
That has a knock-on effect for the forward line, leaving 18-year-old Stella Reid (who stands at 173cm) as the sole tall target alongside mid-sized goalkicker Christina Bernardi.
The club has said the best-case scenario for Wakefield's return is in the final rounds of the season.
Last year, the 34-year-old booted 10 goals for the season, or 23 per cent of the Tigers' complete tally.
Sarah D'Arcy, who played as a forward at Collingwood but has been a defender in Richmond colours, started in attack in round three as a replacement for the 180cm Wakefield.
But it lasted less than a half before Harriet Cordner injured her knee, forcing the 172cm D'Arcy back into defence.
Against Gold Coast, D'Arcy was outmuscled by Tara Bohanna, with Bec Miller swapping from Sarah Perkins to the in-form full-forward in the second half.
There aren't many options to come into the side, either.
Who's in the wings?
- Ingrid Houtsma, 176cm, 18 years old, defender/winger
- Meg Macdonald, 172cm, 23 years old, defender
- Akec Makur Chuot, 178cm, 29 years old, defender
Makur Chuot missed the first two rounds with COVID-19, but has not played since being available for selection.
Richmond face the Western Bulldogs this weekend, who without Izzy Huntington (ACL), currently field two recognised key forwards in Bonnie Toogood and Nell Morris-Dalton.

Excellent changes this week. :clapping
-
Molan out is nearly as good as McKenzie being in
-
About to start.
-
Our girls seem to have regressed from their first win. Alot of mistakes.
-
Finally got it forward. A rushed point from a ball-up.
1 - 2
-
Goal to the Dogs.
1 - 8
Our girls seem to have regressed from their first win. Alot of mistakes.
Missing Wakefield big time. No tall solid marking targets aside from Brennan. We have to chip it forward and our skills aren't good enough across the team to do that.
-
Set shot inside 50 but it doesn't make the distance. Off hands for a point.
2 - 8
-
We finally break the Dogs lines and have Lavey and Brennan running into an empty F50 but the siren goes to end the quarter.
Quarter time.
Richmond 0.2-2
Bulldogs 1.2-8
The one positive is the Dogs had whatever breeze there was that quarter.

McClelland going off with an ankle injury.
Stahl gives away a dumb free on the wing. We then give away 50 :facepalm. And another free to the Dogs 10m out gifts them a goal :banghead.
2 - 14
-
McKenzie free on 50. Nice pass to the pocket to Brennan on the lead. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 1.2-8
WB 2.2-14
-
Good strong play by MacDonald gets it deep inside F50. Ball over the back but it's rushed.
9 - 14
-
Well that quarter was a display of our dysfunctional forward line :scream.
Half-time
Richmond 1.3-9
Bulldogs 2.2-14
Goal: Brennan
Had plenty of the ball and plenty of inside 50s that quarter but if Brennan doesn't mark it (against 3 defenders) then we don't score. Our small forwards are so ineffective it's not funny. Being front and square seems a foreign concept :P.

Tackles: 25 - 20 ....... meaningless today as effectiveness of the tackle is more important.
Frees: 5 - 12 ....... Can't complain about the umps today. We've just been dumb and our tackling sloppy.

Jess Hosking, Miller and Seymour (that qtr) are having good games in defence.
As I said Brennan is our only forward that looks like scoring but she is double/triple teamed with no Wakefield. Our small forwards are AWOL as shown by the stats where they have hardly touched the ball - Stahl 2, D'Arcy 2, Jacques 1, Yassir 3.
Just too many passengers.
-
We had the first clearance but again our smalls are useless and the Dogs clear.
No support in the midfield with too many girls ballwatching see the Dogs run it up for a goal :banghead.
9 - 20
Sorry can't see us winning today. Too many ballwatching reactive passengers.
-
More dumbness :banghead. Another Bulldog goal.
9 - 26
-
Theyve gone back 12 months its a shame. They loojed like they were making steps forward but maybe the win was a flash in the pan.
-
Making every basic skill mistake now :P.
Another injury too :(. Tiger down. Not sure who it is. Stretcher out. May be Burchell (?).
-
It is Burchell. Looks another ACL.
-
Theyve gone back 12 months its a shame. They loojed like they were making steps forward but maybe the win was a flash in the pan.
Our first 3 rounds were decent and we were kicking plenty of goals. Apart from one poor quarter we matched top sides Melbourne and Freo. We are nowhere near playing at the standard the past two weeks. We've lost our No.1 key forward and defender and our structure has gone out the window so we can hardly even score. We don't have the depth to cover any injuries.
-
Almost a repeat of last year's goal. McKenzie 3 bounces from the wing to inside 50 but she misses.
10 - 27
-
Stahl deserves to be dropped after today. No second efforts. Just stops and watches. She has a few teammates in that department though.
Brennan wins a free in the marking contest 30 out. Misses.
11 - 27
-
A quarter of dumb slop!
3/4 time
Richmond 0.2 1.3 1.5-11

Breeze has picked up and we are kicking with it. The problem is can our decision making and use of the footy plus our useless small forwards improve greatly to make the most of it.
-
Stahl long bomb from outside 50 into an empty F50 for a bouncing point.
12 - 29
-
Another injury. Dempsey carried off with an ankle.
Must be down to just 1 on the bench.
-
Sloppy but we get it forward by hand. Conti's shot on the run misses from 30.
13 - 30
-
Well that was horrid all round :help. Shocking effort. Shocking skills. Shocking decision making thanks to zero team structure. Three more long-term injuries.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
THE WESTERN Bulldogs have provided senior coach Nathan Burke with the perfect birthday present on Sunday, winning for the first time in 317 days.
The St Kilda great celebrated his 52nd birthday with the Bulldogs getting on the board for the first time in 2022 after defeating Richmond by 17 points at VU Whitten Oval on Sunday afternoon.
The Dogs hadn't won a game since round nine last season, but kept the Tigers at arms distance all day to breathe life back into a season that had been on life support heading into the weekend, winning 4.6 (30) to 1.7 (13).
The club has experienced an interrupted start to the season with two games postponed due to COVID-19 breakouts and had to play the first replacement game only five days ago, where it narrowly lost to Fremantle by a goal.
After smashing St Kilda by 38 points in round one, Richmond has now lost four consecutive games and are now in dangerous territory of spending another post-season watching on from afar.
The Dogs made a dominant start to the day but took some time to capitalise on the scoreboard. They recorded the first six inside 50s and the first goal of the day, with Richmond needing more than half the opening quarter to put the ball inside their arc for the first time.
They led by a kick at quarter-time and half-time before two well executed set shot goals in the early stages of the second half – one to Ellie Blackburn and the second to Celine Moody – killed the contest.
Play stopped for more than five minutes early in the third quarter when Hannah Burchell went down and clutched her left knee. There are serious concerns the 26-year-old has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear.
The stop in play may have halted the Western Bulldogs' momentum, but it didn't reignite the Tigers with no further goals recorded in the closing quarter and a half.
Western Bulldogs skipper Ellie Blackburn backed up her impressive display against the Dockers on Tuesday night with another eye-catching at VU Whitten Oval.
The premiership player and two-time best and fairest winner was a class above in sunny and breezy conditions in Melbourne's inner-west, collecting 19 disposals, including 15 kicks.
Kirsty Lamb was given far too much room all day and made the Tigers pay, amassing 27 touches, 17 kicks and nine marks.
Most 52nd birthday parties fade in the memory banks, but this one will last for Burke. The Dogs still have a pulse.
Ex-Dog does her best to spoil the party
Dual All-Australian Monique Conti torched her old side but didn’t have enough help from her teammates to seriously challenge the Western Bulldogs, the club where she spent the first two seasons of her career, winning the 2019 best and fairest. The 22-year-old continued her brilliant season, finishing with 19 disposals, 12 kicks and four tackles.
Another serious injury for the Tigers
It was a day of carnage for Ryan Ferguson’s team, taking Richmond’s injury situation from bad to worse. With Harriet Cordner suffering an ACL tear earlier in the season and Courtney Wakefield suffering a long-term shoulder injury, the Tigers have now lost three more players. Burchall has a suspected ACL tear that will be scanned on Monday, while Laura McClelland and Kate Dempsey both suffered ankle injuries.
Say what?
"It's good to celebrate it with my second family. With my second family, there is no other place I'd rather be. They actually sang happy birthday in the team meeting before the game even started, which I wasn't expecting, I thought they'd be concentrating more on the game. So I had to quickly admonish them about not thinking about the game, but it was lovely." - Western Bulldogs coach Nathan Burke
"(Our season is still) more than alive. The challenge in this comp is we've got lots of teams like us who are trying to beat each other. Gold Coast, Geelong, West Coast and probably the Bulldogs and Carlton are a rung above that trying to get into the top six and we're trying to be competitive with the top six. On any day we can be competitive with anyone and we can beat anyone. But obviously in our development with where we are at, we've got to work hard for every goal and every win." - Richmond coach Ryan Ferguson
What's next?
Richmond will look to snap a four-game losing streak when it hosts North Melbourne at the Swinburne Centre next Saturday, while the Western Bulldogs will travel to South Australia to meet Adelaide at Norwood Oval.

1 goal in an entire game. How pathetic is that

Coach Ferguson post-match media conference:

------------------------------------------------------
* Missed opportunities locking the ball inside 50 and so get ascendancy in the game. We're not getting enough inside 50s with the ball rebounding out of our forward line too easily. So we will need to work on that.
* Also missed chances. Not sitters but if you pop a couple through it builds momentum.
* The challenge in this comp is we've got lots of teams like us who are trying to beat each other. Gold Coast, Geelong, West Coast and probably the Bulldogs and Carlton are a rung above that all trying to get into the top six and we're trying to be competitive with the top six. On any day we can be competitive with anyone and we can beat anyone. But obviously in our development with where we are at, we've got to work hard for every goal and every win. We're half way through the season and are still more than alive. We're throw the magnets around and give others opportunities. Just because it was tough today doesn't mean there isn't some exciting footy to come.
* Not our objective to please the fans so much but we back our brand in. We want to get both phases of the game ... all three phases in fact ... we think we can defend in a manner that's exciting to watching and puts pressure on. We think we can use our numbers and running game to (1) it's good to play that way and try and score ... the Bulldogs were good at stifling that today. We couldn't get our game up and running. There's a combination of both worlds. It's about us doing our thing and not pleasing other people but hopefully by doing our thing is good to watch. Today is a tougher day but hopefully in the future our brand will stack up and be good to watch.
* Burchell knee injury - we're worried. We'll know once she gets scanned tomorrow. Hope for the best and that it's something else (not an ACL).
* Ankle injuries (Dempsey & McClelland) - not sure. A wait and see if they are run of the mill ones or more serious.
* Injury toll? In the past we've done some things which have helped: gymnastics, building core strength, etc. But there's still an element of luck.
* A positive to get McKenzie through the game. She showed some glimpses of her explosive best. Usually your first game is a practice match and most people blow up. Good to get her out there and bang some bodies.
* Tough in the last quarter with no rotations. After we lost three we were plugging holes. Tough and frustrating when we wanted to come home with a wet sail. They (our players) fought it out really well. Proud of their last quarter. They really dug in.

'It was a bit of a weird one': Tiger star's unusual injury revealed
Sarah Black
womens.afl
8 February 2022
FORMER No.1 pick Ellie McKenzie has revealed the nature of her unique calf injury for the first time.
Speaking to womens.afl, the Richmond midfielder said she required an operation on extra calf muscle that had grown around her Achilles and into her foot.
"It was a bit of a weird one. I had a bit of extra muscle in my calf, it was causing me some complaints last year," McKenzie said.
"We had some scans and had a look around to see what was going on, and it turns out I had extra soleus muscle in my calf that we went and removed and started that rehab journey from there.
"I had that surgery in August. It was a long rehab process and something that we don't see often as athletes. I was learning on the job, and so was the medical staff, but I think we handled it pretty well with a really good plan moving forward, and we were lucky we were able to move that goal forward and actually return a bit earlier than expected."
The extensive recuperation sidelined McKenzie for the first four rounds of the season, with the Tiger recording nine disposals, three tackles and a behind on her return against the Western Bulldogs, playing limited minutes.
The Tigers lost to the Bulldogs by 17 points, with the loss further soured with season-ending injuries sustained by Hannah Burchell (ACL) and Laura McClelland (ankle syndesmosis), while the extent of Kate Dempsey's ankle injury will be assessed during the week.
Richmond's Ellie McKenzie is tackled by the Western Bulldogs' Katie Lynch during round five, 2022. Picture: AFL Photos
It was the Dogs' first win for the season, beating Richmond in the contested ball (112-87) and total disposals (244-183).
"The message (from coach Ryan Ferguson) was we kept our fight up. We ended up having one rotation, so we really kept fighting. Even though the going was getting tough, we just kept at it, and I think that was a strong message going forward.
"We won in clearances (by one), so that was a positive, but around the ground and that contested possession work, I think we lacked a bit, so I think we'll go ahead at training and work on that physical side of things."

AFLW Ladder after Round 5
(http://oneeyed-richmond.com/images/ladder/AFLWLadderR52022.png)
-
AFLW Physical Performance Manager, Matt Parker provides Richmond Media with the latest injury report.
Hannah Burchell, knee
"Really disappointing for Hannah. She sustained that injury in quarter three on the weekend. It's devastating for her but we know and she knows she's got so much support here at the Club for her and we'll commence that rehab journey as soon as we can."
Laura McClelland, ankle
"Laura, unfortunately, was in a tackling incident in quarter two on the weekend, and unfortunately scans revealed a syndesmosis injury, which is going to rule her out for the season as well. It's devastating for her and she's put a huge amount of work in over the course of the pre-season and season, and we'll wrap our arms around her and support her."
Courtney Wakefield, shoulder
"'Court' sustained a dislocated shoulder in Round 2. We've had further scans and we're continuing to assess her situation, and we're still working through what that will look like for her."
Ellie McKenzie and Poppy Kelly's returns from injury
"It was so pleasing to see both Ellie and Poppy back. Both of them had put a huge amount of work in, Poppy from that Round 1 game and then Ellie over a longer period of time. They worked their way into the game, no doubt they blew out some cobwebs but they'll be much better for the run and we're looking forward to seeing how they work into the rest of the season."
Christina Bernardi, knee soreness
"'Benno' has just been managing a little bit of ongoing knee soreness, and we just felt it was going to be best for her to take that week and hopefully rejuvenate, and we can expect her to potentially be available for this week. She'll still going to be a test to train this week to be available but we're hopeful."
Ingrid Houtsma, calf
"Ingrid had a very minor calf complaint off the back of last week. It's something that we've dealt with really quickly and hopefully managed fairly well. So, she's a chance to be available this week depedning on how she goes through the training week.

managed to finally watch the game on replay
i know we got to have female commentators because its aflw but ffs can they get the names of the players right, persistent incorrect calling of players annoyed the poo out of me, anyone with a blonde pony tail was katie brennan all day
-
Just when I thought our team and the league were on the up this is what's dished out.
I legit think women's grounds should be smaller and with less players. There's not enough talent to fill half the league at the moment and it's not for want of trying let's be clear they give 100%. Quality just ain't there yet.

AFLW games already have less players on the ground than men's games so not sure less players is an option
Wait until next season when the final teams come in to make it an 18 team comp. The talent pool will not cope
