2021 AFL Community Series fixture announced
By Richmond Media - 1 hr ago

Richmond will play a pre-season game in Lavington next year for the first time since 2015.

Richmond will kick-off its 2021 campaign with a pre-season fixture against the Western Bulldogs at Lavington Sportsground on February 27.

The clash, starting at 4.40pm, will be the Tigers’ first of two AFL Community Series matches. Richmond will also travel to Adelaide to play the Crows at Flinders University Stadium on Sunday March 7, at 12.40pm ACDT.

Richmond has played pre-season matches in Wangaratta and Shepparton in recent years, which along with Albury-Wodonga sits within the Club’s Next Generation Academy region.

“Through Aligned Leisure, Richmond Institute and our Next Generation Academy, Albury-Wodonga has become an even more significant region for our Club,” Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said.

“This is another exciting opportunity for us to showcase the area and strengthen our existing ties with the local community.”

A shame we're not playing in Vic for a daytripper.

Given the short preseason, I doubt too many senior players will play against the dogs.

You'd think they'd schedule 2x Vic sides in Victoria with Covid hanging over their heads.  Absolutely moronic.

The season should just start one month earlier without these games.  Internal trial games enough if all clubs in the same boat.

Exactly, all these pre season games are a waste of time IMHO

Tom Browne on 7news said the preseason fixture will be torn up. There will be one official practice match plus a scratch match. If I heard him right it won't be interstate. The new preseason fixture will be announced in the next couple of days.

One game, less travel: AFL revises AAMI Community Series fixture

By AFL Media - 5 hrs ago

The AAMI Community Series pre-season schedule has been reduced to one game per team as the League looks to reduce travel ahead of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

Each of the 18 clubs will play an official AAMI Community Series game from Wednesday, March 3 to Sunday, March 7, instead of the originally scheduled two games across three weeks.

The revised fixture and ticketing for those games is yet to be released, but the format and length of those games will be the same as the premiership season.

In addition to the AAMI Community Series games, each team will also play a pre-season practice match against a team from the same state to avoid extra travel. The format of those games – including number of players, quarter length etc – will be decided by the participating teams.

All clubs will have a minimum seven-day break between their pre-season practice match and their AAMI Community Series game.

The AFL's executive general manager of clubs and broadcast, Travis Auld, said flexibility was a priority in the revised pre-season schedule.

"In addition to ensuring we continue to prioritise the health of our players, staff, and the wider community, this arrangement provides clubs with the ability to determine individual requirements, allowing clubs and players to best prepare for the season ahead," Mr. Auld said.

Richmond to face Collingwood in AAMI Community Series
By Richmond Media - 10 hrs ago

.
Richmond will play Collingwood in the 2021 AAMI Community Series, with the AFL announcing the revised pre-season competition fixture today.

The Friday night game will be held at Marvel Stadium on March 5 at 7:10pm AEDT.

AFL Executive General Manager of Clubs and Broadcasting Travis Auld said the decision to revise the fixture was made by the league, together with clubs, to safeguard the health and safety of the competition and the community by reducing travel prior to the home-and-away season.

“The AAMI Community Series continues to play an important role for AFL clubs and supporters across the country and we thank the regions of Albury (NSW), Coffs Harbour (NSW), Morwell (VIC), Noarlunga (SA), North Hobart (TAS), Mandurah (WA) and Whyalla (SA) for their understanding as we worked through the safest and most straightforward options for players, staff and supporters,” Mr Auld said.

“Each of those regions play an extremely important role in our game and the decision to revise the AAMI Community Series was made to protect the health and safety of the competition and the wider community which remains the priority for the league.

“It is communities like these that are the heartbeat of Australian Football and we hope to be able to return to each of those areas and play games there in the future. While we share the disappointment of these regions, we also look forward to more fans being able to safely attend AAMI Community Series matches, particularly in states where supporters have not been able to attend a men’s game in over a year.”

The revised fixture features reduced travel with most matches of the 2021 AAMI Community Series to be played at AFL and AFLW venues.

All 2021 AAMI Community Series matches will be broadcast live on FOX FOOTY, Kayo and through the Official AFL LIVE App, thanks to Telstra.

Ticketing arrangements for the 2021 AAMI Community Series will be advised in due course.

The worst thing about Ticketmaster (and Ticketek) is the seats they choose for you are not best available nor where you want to sit. The first ones they offered me as 'wing' seats were next to the Pies cheersquad :chuck even though I didn't select 'goals' as an option. After about 4 goes of it giving me 'goal' seats, it finally gave me a wing seat dead centre. Persistence pays off I guess ;D.

You'd think with the latest technology and programming they would by now have a similar website set-up to the movies where you can see which seats have already been taken and which ones are still available, then select yourself which ones of the latter you want rather than playing find the needle in a haystack for an hour  :thumbsdown.

The thing is you can use a seat map to select specific seats , but only if you use general public option..
I don't understand why it is set up like this , punishing members...
Perhaps there is a way to select seats then put in barcode but i can't see it

Lynch to miss Pies hitout

By Owen Leonard
The Age
March 4, 2021 — 1.03pm

Tom Lynch will join Dion Prestia on the sidelines on Friday night, missing Richmond’s hitout against Collingwood with a toe complaint.

It opens the door for Richmond’s youth to audition, with 2018 first-round pick Riley Collier-Dawkins, young ruck Callum Coleman-Jones and Will Martyn — who impressed against Melbourne last week — all set to play against the Pies.

“From a development point of view, it’s fantastic to see them and their approach,” said Lonergan. “Their attention to detail is elite, because they know they’re up against elite players for the same spots.”

I had Ross a lock after his great intra-club but his game against the Dees was disappointing. Seems Martyn has gone ahead of him for the chance to play round 1 if Prestia doesn't come up.

Aarts and D.Rioli vying for that last small forward role.

Jack Ross be pretty upset not being selected for DES.

Ross is a midfielder and DES a hbf so shouldn't be upset at DES more Martyn or RCD.

But really the club wants to look at as many of the kids as possible so I suspect there will be a rotation of the kids all season.

Ross didn't play well enough in the practice game last week to warrant a game while DES was BOG in the 2nds.

As Barrassi used to lecture 'you give me possessions and I'll shut up"

Pies flooding. Trying to hit us on the counter. So we need to lower our eyes rather than always going the lond bomb.

Pies forward line is rubbish. Our backs all over them aside from ump gifts.

Liked CCJ's game so far.

You can say that again.  They have nothing up forward beside DeGoey and Elliot but there talls are hopeless.
The one hit wonder american is a laughing stock.

We are absolutely dominating this game but we aren’t punishing them with goals.

F50 entries better that qtr. We just missed gettable shots. Of course george kicks the hard shot.

If Lynch was playing we would be destroying them. The pies wouldn't be able to double team Jack.

A couple of lazy cute lairising efforts mid-qtr.

Caddy running a lot better than last year when he was carrying injury.

Marlion's decision making has been off tonight

Grimesy is a legend.

Nank has been really good.

Summary: We were all over them but couldn't convert our inside 50's into scores  Filth nearly stole it at the end after we took Martin, Cotch, Nank, Grimes, & Baker off...Short bought his own footy... of the kids & fringe dwellers -Chol actually took a semi-contested mark and had a good patch after Cox fired him up but was non-compettive in the ruck save one or two contests which included an awesome tap down to Dusty straight after giving away a free & goal to the big seppo....continues to tease,,,...CCJ was passable up forward but didn't ruck that I can remember....RCD pulled off a nice spin move and had a couple of "nearly" moments but got caught ..can stand up in the tackle but can't get quite rid of it yet... still manages to  somehow look very promising yet very unconvincing at the same time...Will Martyn for the one quarter he was on showed he likes it in and under but was barely noticeable otherwise ....Egg again showed he can play and actually showed some composure under pressure albeit  pre-season "pressure"....Aarts his usual mix of good, bad and serviceable..... :shh

First half was our current best 22 which included Caddy, Aarts, CCJ. No concerns aside from our goalkicking being ordinary all night.

After half-time started bringing on Chol, RCD then DES & Martyn. Took off Nank, Cotch at HT then Grimes and Dusty at 3/4T.

Went young at the centrebounces with Chol, Graham, RCD & Bolts. Martyn & RCD were swapping. Grundy gave the Pies first use vs Chol. That's why the Pies came back into the game twice. Dimma threw Sheds into the middle to regain some control and then went back to the cubs.

All up I'd be more concerned if I was a Pies fan.

Balta and Bolton very disappointing. Balta had to be moved off a 2nds player that took him to the cleaners and Bolton tried to do too much and stuffed things up. Chol hasn’t improved at all.

On the positive side Short, Baker, Graham and Grimes dominated.

CCJ was passable up forward but didn't ruck that I can remember....

CCJ went into the ruck a few times in the 1st half (half a dozen at most)

Up forward just needs to use his size; he should be crashing packs

We had babies in the centre square against their A listers which got them first use and Once grimes went off the ground our defenders didn’t have the same leadership in defence and we were caught out a few times in that last quarter.
Nothing to worry about and it was good to have a look at the cubs.

RCD played on deGoey at centre bounces. He is far too skinny to be trying to bust through packs but I like it that he tries to do it.
Martyn was tackling and scragging everyone. He actually reminded me of a young dusty from behind (same number same hair when dusty was 18) he is no dusty though so don’t get too excited but he seems to go in.
We clean up our forward 50 entries we win by a minimum 6 goals tonight.

Yep. Our premiership stars played well, we got through unscathed, and Collingwood did us favour trying to win it by keeping Pendlebury and DeGoey in the centre against our cubs in the second half. Good footy education for RCD and Martyn.

I'd be worry if I was the Pies. Their forward line is trash. When we had our best side on the park in the first half they could only kick 3 goals. If matches this year are going to higher scoring then teams with poor forward lines that struggle to score are not going to win too many games. Can see the Pies not making finals and Bucks not having Eddie to save him.

Footy looks like ‘a different game’, just as the AFL wanted: What we learned this preseason

Matt Balmer, David Zita, Max Laughton and Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
March 8th, 2021

It’s always hard to take too much out of the pre-season - especially in 2021, when it only lasts one week. It’s a small sample size for individual players.

But in the big picture, one thing was clear from the opening bounce on Thursday night: footy has changed.

It’s not just the return to 20-minute quarters; and it’s not just the rule changes, most notably the ‘stand’ rule which forces the man on the mark to do just that. It’s a combination of a bunch of things, all adding up to a faster, more open game; at least in the AAMI Community Series.

However there might be another factor at play with all of this - the chase to catch the back-to-back premiers.

The Tigers’ mad-cap ball movement has spurred them onto repeated premiership glory, and with a full pre-season and relatively normal training sessions behind them, Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy believes clubs are simply copying what works.

“Maybe the competition has woken up and seen that Richmond has won three of the last four flags, and that they have to play like this,” he said on Fox Footy.

But he later added: “There’s no doubt that the rule change has provoked the play-on factor.”

Tiger time doesn’t look close to ending

You’d be brave to tip against Richmond after a mighty impressive showing by the reigning premiers against Collingwood.

While the margin appeared close, there’s no doubting the Tigers have a number of gears to take a game forward and possess depth that no other side across the competition has.

Jayden Short had 43 disposals in a side that is primed for an attempt at an elusive third premiership in as many years.

Jack Riewoldt showed no signs of father time catching him, slotting two goals from five attempts, while 27 disposals and a goal should bring Josh Caddy back into consideration after missing the 2020 finals.

Matthew Lloyd says reigning premiers Richmond were the most impressive side he saw play during the AAMI Community Series pre-season games.

On the back of all 18 teams featuring in their one and only official pre-season match before the season begins on March 18, Lloyd said it was the Tigers who caught his eye.

He said their attention to detail and willing to adopt a team-first mentality – even in a pre-season match – stood out.

“My best for the weekend was Richmond,” the Essendon great said on Sportsday.

“I thought their best was better than anyone else and they didn’t roll into it like a pre-season game – it was coming off the back of St Kilda versus Carlton (on Thursday night) which was a goal fest.

“In the first half when Richmond had their best team out there, you couldn’t get past (Dylan) Grimes and (the way) Trent Cotchin smothered a ball in the first (few minutes was telling).

“I watched Toby Nankervis give away a free kick and then ran 80 metres to get back into the hole in front of Mason Cox to fist it.

“I saw (Josh) Caddy and (Kamdyn) McIntosh played as wingers, they defended as they should.

“It was Richmond again saying that ‘we’ll do all the little things better than you’ and then you have guys like (Jason) Castagna who chipped in with their four goals.”

The Tigers defeated Collingwood by six points at Marvel Stadium, opting to rest a number of their stars in the second half as they look ahead to the traditional season-opener against Carlton on March 18.
