Tigers, Lions likely for Friday night in Riewoldt’s 300th
Daniel Cherny
The Age
July 7, 2021
Richmond’s fight to secure a finals spot is likely to face the roadblock of a clash with premiership fancies Brisbane off a five-day break in what is set to be Jack Riewoldt’s 300th game.
Industry sources indicated to The Age on Tuesday that the league is strongly considering scheduling a Friday night game in round 18 between the Tigers and Lions at the MCG.
Melbourne v Hawthorn is another option but the clash featuring the reigning premiers is considered to be the frontrunner.
The AFL has turned its attention to round 18 with the round 17 fixture almost complete and crowd limits likely to increase slightly at games in Victoria this weekend.
Industry sources said they were expecting capacity to increase from 50 per cent with a maximum of 25,000 people to 75 per cent with a maximum of 30,000 at all Victorian stadiums.
The Tigers and Magpies have been shifted to the Sunday twilight slot this weekend, however Richmond are expected to soon return to prime time, albeit off a shortened break, with each club allowed to have one five-day gap during the season in accordance with an agreement between the league and AFL Players Association. Champion forward Riewoldt is due to play his 300th game against the Lions.

Chris Fagan said he expected under-siege Richmond to be at its "very best" for Jack Riewoldt's 300th game.
"The Tigers are pretty desperate to make the finals and they'll always give themselves a chance to be successful if they get inside the eight.
"All the criticism they're getting will only fire that up."
Brisbane has made a habit of breaking hoodoos since being coached by Chris Fagan, but one remains – winning at the MCG.
On Friday night they get a chance to put another nail in the Tigers' finals aspirations, while at the same time recording a rare win at the home of football.
Brisbane hasn't won at the MCG since 2014, losing nine straight matches, including all six games at the ground during Fagan's tenure.

Desperate is one thing, desperate with our VFL side is another. Yes as supporters we want to see the effort but there should also be an understanding that if both sides perform to their best then we still lose unfortunately and that's just how things are at the moment.

Marcus Adams is out for the Lions as well as Hipwood.

-
Another 12 or so and we will be in with a chance
-
We will need a miracle to win this game.
-
Whats going on with our medical team. Blokes like Vlastuin Nankervis Prestia and Lambert must be ready to go.
If we got those four back with a couple of other tweaks id give us a chance.
pee off Naish Castagna Aarts and Rioli and we are no longer starting 4 men down.
Would love to see this team take the field
Mansell - Astbury - Grimes
Vlastuin - Miller - Stack
No Rioli thank god. Garthwaite a bit unlucky but give me the bigger quicker Miller for Daniher, Astbury would get McStay whos a pretty big unit as well. with no Hipwood it frees Grimes up for Cameron
Mids
McIntosh - Martin - Lambert
Nankervis - RCD - Prestia
IF McIntosh can play like last week then this is just about our strongest midfield. RCD will benefit enormously with Prestia Nankervis and Dusty all in there with him
fwds
Baker - Riewoldt - Parker
Chol - Lynch - Bolton
With adams gone Chol s presence means their Tall defenders all have an opponent and with Nankervis just coming back gives him a good break. Parker over Castagna and Aarts is a must. Baker has been great when up fwd and Bolton provides real x factor when he is there. He and Dusty could be rotated in and out of there.
INT: Short - Cotchin - Graham - Pickett. Cotchin is lucky but they wont drop him for Jacks 300th
-
I like it, Claw
-
Dont mind it, although I would like to continue to trial Rioli at half back for at least another couple of weeks.
-
If McIntosh could kick he’d be of real value on a wing unfortunately most of the time his kicks are very poor and once in a while he’ll hit a target and your left asking yourself why can’t you do this most of the time. The other facets of his game are good.
It’s unfortunate we don’t have skilful wingman.

100% spot , but what I can't understand why our prayers don't get around him if they no he can't kick for a handball.

Because thoughts and prayers don't do anything Georgie
Blokes needs to learn to kick better

The three-time Coleman Medallist Jack Riewoldt said that despite Richmond’s recent run of outs, the Tigers had not given up on the season.
“For us it’s just about trying to have an impact every game every week. We’re starting to rally the troops and get a few people back. Mathematically we’re still a massive chance to make finals, that seventh and eighth spot is wide open to anyone between sort of seventh and 14th can still get in, all you’ve got to do is get there. We’ve seen the Bulldogs in 2016 impact the finals from seventh,” Riewoldt said on Thursday morning at Punt Road.
“We believe that if we get our core nucleus back...you never know.“

Cheer hard for the rest of us Julz :thumbsup.
Feel like tonight will go either one of two ways: Play like recent weeks and the Lions will give us a 10+ goal shallacking; Find our mojo with Nank back & the rest lifting for Jack's 300 and we bravely get over the line in a last man stand scrap.

Confirmed on the AFL website.
RICHMOND has been held up in a huge traffic jam on its way to Metricon Stadium for its crucial round 18 clash with Brisbane.
The game has now been pushed back by 15 minutes and will start at 8.05pm AEST.
The delay is reportedly due to a crash on the freeway. It's another distraction the Tigers can ill afford after the match was rescheduled at the last minute away from the MCG due to the COVID outbreak in Melbourne.

Aarts :facepalm.

Slack defending leaving Zorko by himself 20 out. Lucky he missed.

Kmac off feeling his sternum.
-
So you can tackle someone around the head and shoulders?
Mansell needed to be better there.

Parker's shot from 45 doesn't make the distance but Jumping Jack takes a speckie :clapping. Goal :gotigers.

That was a soft free ::).
19 - 13

Chol :facepalm. Stop tapping free taps to Brisbane mids :scream.

4 Tigers ballwatching and then give away the free :banghead.
-
More injuries. Kmac hammy :P.
Aarts has a free option and kicks it instead to a contest :facepalm.
-
Lucky McStay had a total brainfade.

Our small forwards' decision making :banghead.
We get it back and Short finds Chol by the boundary 40 out. Great kick. Goal :gotigers.
Rich 4.2-26
Bris 2.1-13
-
Nank is our most important player
-
We give it straight back via a soft centre clearance. Failing to protect the defensive side again Tiges :banghead.
26 - 19

Very soft free against Garthy
-
Playing well. Cmon boys!
-
Quarter time
Richmond 4.2-26
Brisbane 3.1-19
Goals: Riewoldt, Lynch, Chol, Martin.
Intensity good. Got to keep this up 4 quarters though.
The concern is the centrebounces. Brisbane mids getting a few too many easy clearances once they get hands on it and handball out to a waiting free teammate. When Chol is in the ruck he needs to tap it to our blokes.
Kmac subbed out and Ross on.
-
Playing well. Cmon boys!
Utterly peeweak poo mate.
Parker looks OK.
-
Two schoolboy turnovers in a row :banghead.
That wasn't 15 either ump ::).

Garth we're not wearing maroon and blue.

Great teamwork Tiges. Goal Graham :gotigers.
Rich 5.3-33
Bris 3.3-21
-
Garth looks scared to kick it.
Great team goal.
That mark paid was maybe 9-10m tops lol
-
Not protecting the defensive side again :banghead. How can you allow Daniher to be free by himself out the back from a knock forward :banghead.
-
Geez our defender is a worry.
-
Geez we are giving up soft goals this year :banghead.
-
Garth Waite is totally lost, not marking space and not rotating quick enough
-
And yet again the pressure just stops and we stop.
-
Garth is having a mare.
Mind you that was terrible defending all round.
Just spoiled the first 35 mins with this crap last 5 minutes :scream.
Dimma needs to tell our mids at centrebounces to cut out the cute attempted nothing taps and get your hands on the pill. They're just allowing Brisbane to get the ball. We're getting smashed again in the guts.
33 - 39
-
Sorry but how is that a free to daniher.
Game is basically ruined.
-
It’s not a free, just sh@te umpiring.
-
LOL. Chol karate kick goal :gotigers.
Geez did we need that! Against the run of play.
Rich 6.3-39
Bris 6.4-40
-
Jack sprays his shot from 45.
40 all.
It's the centre clearances that are killing us.

Umps pulling out soft frees to Brisbane ::).

Jack sprays his shot from 45.
40 all.
It's the centre clearances that are killing us.
Jack is getting way too close to the man on the mark
And yeah the lack of midfield pressure is killing us yet again
-
Umps pulling out soft frees to Brisbane ::).
Becoming an issues
-
How the hell did an umpire initially call that holding the ball against us???
-
Great mark Jack. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 7.4-46
Bris 7.4-46
LOL @ the rules now. Holding the ball and dangerous tackle called by two different umps.
-
This game is playing too a similar tune we all know.
-
Another easy centre clearance and goal to them :banghead.
Stack thump the ball to the line. Don't just knock it softly 5m to Brisbane players.
-
This game is playing too a similar tune we all know.
We can't stop them winning easy centre clearances. It's killing us.
-
Centre clearance creating very soft goals for the Lions
Notice Nank isn't jumping at centre bounces
-
And the BS free of the night is "dangerous tackle" ::).
-
Bloody hell, another soft non existent dangerous tackle.
-
And the BS free of the night is "dangerous tackle" ::).
Yep
Clearly rule of the week :banghead
-
Dangerous tackle rule of the week.
No one will watch footy anymore if this is the norm
-
Their ruck has been scragging Nank all night when Nank has been playing in front but the ump only pays a hold (to Brisbane) when Nank was behind ::).
-
Half time
Richmond 4.2 7.4-46
Brisbane/Umps 3.1 8.4-52
Goals: Riewoldt 2, Chol 2, Lynch, Martin, Graham.
The issue is the centrebounces. We're just bleeding easy goals because we can't get our hands on the footy and they are just waltzing inside 50 for soft goals. Got no chance of winning if this is repeated in the second half.
As for umps :facepalm. Brisbane getting every soft ticky touchwood free :banghead.
-
We've had 20 mins on our terms, the rest all Brisbane. 6+ goal loss looming large.
-
At least playing like we give a damn IMO
-
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E6agySvUYAISUc0?format=jpg&name=large)
Brisbane have kicked 4 goals from centrebounces and 6 of their 8 goals from stoppages.
Given up 13 marks inside D50 because the ball is coming out of the middle too easily.
It all starts fixing the problem in the middle.
-
At least playing like we give a damn IMO
Yep
No issue with how they’re going at the moment
Having a dip for the first time in 3 weeks
-
Not protecting the defensive again. 3 brisbane players by themselves goal side in the centre square at HB :banghead.
-
Again allowing Brisbane players to run forward free of contest on the wing there :banghead.
-
Spoke to soon
That was pathetic :banghead
-
Why don't the umpires say 'Andrews, you're being a smart idiot, that's holding the ball' instead of just waiting 30 seconds for it to pop out.
-
Parker :banghead
-
Good pass Stack to Bolton playing in front. Goal! :gotigers.

Clever gather and chip kick by Bolts to Jack's advantage. Goal! :gotigers
In front :thumbsup.
Rich 10.5-65
Bris 9.7-61
-
Finally the umps are seeing McInerney scragging Nank all the time.
Dusty from the advantage hits up Chol 30 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 11.5-71
Bris 9.7-61

George you selfish hog :banghead.

George, blazes away and burns the easy handball to unmarked Jack in the goal square.
-
Jack 5 goals :gotigers.
Rich 12.6-78
Bris 9.7-61
-
How did Astbury end up on Charlie Cameron? That wouldn't be the match up so someone wasn't doing their job.
78 - 67
-
Geez out defending has been bad tonight. Why they had so much room and space when we constantly made them stop coming through the midfield is brutal. And how does Astbury end up defending Cameron?
-
3/4 time
Richmond 4.2 7.4 12.6-78
Brisbane 3.1 8.4 10.7-67
Goals: Riewoldt 5, Chol 3, Lynch, Martin, Graham, Bolton.
Fixing up the centre clearances made all the difference. Need to keep it up.
-
How is Dusty? Hodge reckons he has a hip pointer. We haven't got any subs left either so Dusty will have to try and play it out.
-
Jack Ross :banghead
Sorry enough is enough
HTF can he get a game? Continually let’s the team down.
-
Stack is in the side because he attacks by foot.
Ross poor shot. Rushed.
79 - 68
-
Dusty not coming back out apparently :P.

Lynch blocked by McInerney at the throw-in. Goal! :gotigers

Dusty done!

Dusty not coming back out apparently :P.

My1st reaction was kidneys

Chol from downtown :gotigers. That's his 4th.
Rich 14.7-91
Bris 10.8-68

Chol playing the game of his life!

Funny how much better Chol is when Nankervis is out there with him
He's been great tonight :clapping
-
So you can just drop the ball in the tackle (Andrews)?
George misses again.
92 - 68
-
Castagna could have put the nail in the coffin and he burns free forwards everywhere. Stuff in selfish player
-
Lol, holding the man paid to Brisbane… he had the ball. It’s called a tackle you grub!
-
Castagna can FO.
Chol having a good game. Nice maybe not having him ruck alone. Captain playing well too.
-
Lol, holding the man paid to Brisbane… he had the ball. It’s called a tackle you grub!
Had the arm way too early. Clear free IMO.
But they never pay it to Dusty!
-
Like Rioli’s game tonight.
-
Don’t pay the illegal disposal.
-
Funnily enough we could cough this up yet.
-
Mansell needed to take that mark
Another dangerous tackle
In the back probably but dangerous
WTF
-
"dangerous tackle" ::)
McCluggage another dropping the ball in the tackle not paid ::).
Despite all that that goal to brisbane was thanks to Ross' stupid tap.
93 - 74

Go for the open goal Lynch :scream.
-
Omfg
Lynch
Lambert
Astbury
Just give them the 4 points fmd

Bloody brainfades (Astbury) :banghead.

Astbury, bloody hell. Terrible turnover.

We've stopped to a walk again

Aarts :facepalm :banghead.

Astbury off with an ankle. Down to two on the bench :help.

Stupid kick but Aarts treated it like it was a hand grenade.

Deliberate… wow wee!

Downfield free to Jack. That's 6 :gotigers
Rich 16.10-106
Bris 13.8-86

Brave gutsy win Tiges :clapping.

Well done Tigers
Brilliant response
-
Great game, boys stood up tonight. Still a heartbeat if we can get enough stars healthy.
-
Great effort from the boys! Backs to the wall & we fight it out like that. Very happy for the boys! :gotigers
-
Super win for Jack. :thumbsup
-
Lots of improvement for this team. Thought we were still sloppy.
Wonderful to stick it up Briswane with Port snapping at their heels.
-
Wowee great win with our injuries too and a vfl backline. :clapping
Chol’s best game of career. :clapping :clapping
Rioli much better off half back this week. :clapping :clapping :clapping
Congratulations to Jack. What a superstar player he is. :clapping :clapping :clapping :clapping

Hopefully a few back in next week. Do we know who's fit?
Edward's, Prestia, Vlastuin?

Final Score
Richmond 4.2 7.4 12.6 16.10-106
Brisbane 3.1 8.4 10.7 13.8-86
Goals: Riewoldt 6, Chol 4, Graham 2, Lynch 2, Martin, Bolton.
:clapping
Once we stemmed the bleeding at the centrebounces after half-time and got it moving our way we were pretty much on top and controlled the rest of the game.
-
That deliberate out of bounds call was as dirty of an umpiring call as I have ever seen. Just corrupt..
Tow Ball head Dog called it.
-
When you look through the team on paper tonight, add injuries that was a great win and coaching performance.
Enjoyed his passion from the box also too. Particularly at the umpiring early.
-
Well said pmac
Coaching tonight was sublime. Made Fagan look dumb.
-
+11 in centre clearances after half-time. So it totally swung around big time in the 2nd half. Credit to our midfield.
-
where was the Barometer?
-
Great stuff. Richmond like footy.lets not forget how much a bag of dicks Brisbane have been the last few games against us. Get in the bin U mugs.
-
Love this
Will be great to not have a week of pure misery from flogs in the media and champions on here wanting to crucify everyone and delist half the club
Having said that Castagna is the worst player in the AFL at the present time :lol and young Pickett had at least 5 opportunities to go back with the flight but pulled out each time....classic case of being considered a hard man because he smashes blokes with their head over the footy but rarely sticks his own body on the line. #5 from Brisbane dishes and takes it
-
Feels great to be back on the winners list and what a win with so many of our best 22 out against a quality side like Brisbane. It’s crazy how we give up runs of goals in such short timeframes this season when one of the defining qualities of our last 5 years was being able to stem the damage when the games not on our terms.
I don’t think we’ll have enough to go with Geelong next week which will likely unfortunately put the nail in the coffin of our season but I’d love to be wrong.

Is this a joke? They called 5 dangerous tackles and you could argue none of them were there.
Club should challenge Nank's.
-
Anyone know what the definition of a dangerous tackle is:
A) any tackle applied by a Richmond player
B) a tackle applied by a Richmond player, that, if applied by another team, would normally result in a holding the ball free kick.

Great to have Nank back. Made a real difference. Thought Parker was okay and showed abit of promise.

Hockings cheating appointed mate Christian! We have got rough end of the stick since he was appointed.
If were judged the same as Collingwood we would have a good run, hope he goes

RICHMOND
That’s more like it. After a month where they looked like they’d been sapped of their juice by the Space Jam aliens (the original ones, obviously), the premiers roared back into top eight calculations with a much-needed upset of Brisbane – in what’s becoming one of the best modern rivalries, we might add. Unfortunately a kidney injury that’ll keep Dustin Martin out for the remainder of the season soured an otherwise excellent night.
In the votes
This says it all: six goals in your 300th game. Jack Riewoldt, you superstar. He led the way but was ably assisted by Mabior Chol (four goals), who has clearly grown in the period where Toby Nankervis wasn’t in the side and took full advantage of being able to spend more time as a forward. Nankervis was very influential too, proving how much they’ve missed him, while Jack Graham (19 disposals, two goals) impressed – Leigh Montagna said on The First Crack on Sunday night that he could be Richmond’s next captain.
Room for improvement
Really hard to find a complaint here.
