Title: Good luck to Meyer and Tambling
Post by: mightytiges on April 29, 2005, 06:26:31 AM
All the best to the young guns in their debut game. The future onballers of Tigerland will be on display for the first time :thumbsup.

The opposition won't know much about you so just play you're natural games and do the job asked of you by Terry.

Carn the Tigers!  :cheers

Title: Tambling finally receives call

Tambling finally receives call
The Australian
April 30, 2005

GUN Richmond recruit Richard Tambling wasn't exactly sitting by the phone waiting on the news that would kick off his senior AFL career.

In fact, Tambling thought he might have been in trouble after missing a few calls earlier this week from coach Terry Wallace.

Instead it was the news Tigers fans and Tambling had been waiting on for the past five rounds -- that the explosive Northern Territory midfielder would finally make his senior debut after overcoming a series of injuries.

He and another of Richmond's four first-round draft picks, Danny Meyer, will turn out for the first time against Port Adelaide at Telstra Dome tomorrow.

"I just can't wait to get out there on Sunday and hopefully get a crack on the field," said Tambling, who was the Tigers' second selection at No.4 in last year's national draft. "I've been waiting for a long time just to play footy down here."

Richmond's first pick, No.1 Brett Deledio, is already impressing in the senior ranks.

Tambling, 18, created a stir with an exciting performance during Richmond's narrow Wizard Cup loss to Collingwood.

Showing lightning pace and silky ball-gathering abilities, he kicked two goals, including one bomb from 55 metres.

But a series of injuries, including back, toe and hamstring problems, stalled his much-anticipated debut.

"I'm feeling 100 per cent, it's feeling good," he said, after returning from injury for the Tigers' VFL affiliate, Coburg, on Monday.

"It's been very frustrating being on the sideline and watching the rest of the boys from the 2004 draft come out and play good footy and kick a few goals."

A relaxed Tambling said he felt more excitement than pressure and said he was flying his grandmother down from Darwin for the match.

He was happy to be sharing the spotlight with his good mate Meyer, the pair both Bombers fans as juniors.

Also 18 and weighing only 70kg, the baby-faced South Australian has been an emergency for the past three weeks and was relieved to finally get a start.

"Terry called me on Wednesday night and I was rapt," Meyer said.

"He asked me how I thought my form was and I said pretty consistent and he agreed, so I got the call-up."

But Meyer, who hoped to spend some time across half-forward or in the midfield, said he was happy for Tambling and Deledio to grab most of the attention.

"I love that - I don't really like the media attention too much," he said.

"I'm really good mates with Richie, so it's great that we're making our debut together and hopefully we can go out there and have really good games."

All the best for your first senior games, Danny and Tambo.
Here's hoping for long and successful careers at the Tiges  :thumbsup

Well done on their debuts today. Nothing mindblowing but both their skills were clean. Alot of faith by Terry putting Meyer on Wanganeen on the wing from the start. Tambling's speed is amazing. Puts on the afterburners and can get to opponents. His effort in the forward pocket which lead to Pettifer's 4th goal where he was aware to tap the ball pass the oncoming Port player and along the boundary line to Pettifer while having his jumper pulled was great stuff  :thumbsup.

I thought Tamblings game was great.  He applied so much pressure on the Port defenders and crumbed beautifully assisting in about 3 goals.  Meyer was OK, but thought he was brushed off a few contests a bit too easily.  He'll need alot of time in the gym.  His first kick in AFL footy was great, a beautifully weighted kick in the middle that split Port in half.

I thought both Tambling and Meyer were very good.

A bit of nerves in the beginning but once they settled down - they were good.

Meyer's skills are going to be very good for the Tigers.

Tambling's 1%'s were excellent.

A lot to look forward to I reckon

And kudos to Tezza and the coaches for leaving them on - in days gone by they would've been lucky to get 40 minuts of game time.

PS: I thought it was Deledio's best game as well - he still needs to tighten up defensively but gee he looked impressive yesterday

 :thumbsup :thumbsup

10 possies in third plus a lovely bit of flair when he side-stepped around Ebert and left him for dead. A definite sign his confidence at this level is rising with every game.

I remember seeing an equation on hhq after Rd 3 that read:

Roughhead + Franklin > Tambling + Deledio

I still laugh to the day. Deledio has been nothing short of serviceable at this stage and appears to be growing every week. The best part? I finally see some class oozing slowly slowly.

BTW I still think Richo > Hawthorn Team  and Deledio > Sum of Hawthorn recruits  :lol :lol

It's only early days but so far it looks like last year's early draft picks are high quality. Win-win for a few clubs.

This was the first I had seen of Meyer and I was impressed by what I saw. He comes across as one of those players that are relaxed and go about their footy as if effortlessly.

Showed great composure for a first gamer i thought.

Tambling was fumbling a bit but he shows good determination and his reflexes look top notch. Will be a very good wing/half forward for us in the future I think.

Funny how Meyer lined up in his first game on the very player he was compared to before the draft in Wanganeen.

Agree John.  Meyer is very composed and will be a consistent no frills player for us - similar to Newman.  Tambling on the other hand will be the excitement machine who will do the un-do-able and make the easy look difficult, similar to Richo.

Tambling was quiet this week but I thought Meyer for only his second game was very good today after half time when Terry experimented in some positions and had him on the ball. Very classy and smart with his disposal and whatsmore doesn't mind putting his body in to win the footy despite his still light frame. Once he gets a couple of preseasons under his belt in the gym so he won't be pushed off the ball he'll be a good pickup for us.

Once Meyer bulks up watch out.  He was great today.  He has natural instincts and is in the Chris Newman mould in that he has such clean hands, great balance, poise, vision and skill.  We definately have a player here.

Tambling was ok today but not as good a last week.  He needs to slow down a bit as he tends to over run the ball alot, similar to what a young Maxfield used to do.  Tambo needs to work on his poise and composure, otherwise he has everything else.
