Title: Do we really need many trades?
Post by: jordie2tivendale on September 01, 2012, 12:50:49 AM
Our 22 is pretty decent  injury free we can beat anyone ( ask Hawthorn and Sydney ) i hope we don't see too many radical changes we seem pretty  good for such a young side  too much change may change us  and perhaps not in a positive manner has anyone been thinking along these lines  as well ?

Free agency is limited to AFL players who have had 8 years plus in the system (ignoring delistings) so trading will still be important if you want to poach a young player from another club. I would say all our key players we want to keep are all signed up and untouchable. It'll only be fringe players with still some tradeable currency (ie. not duds like Gus, Webberley, etc...) who we would be willing to give up via a trade and would get us something in return useful. For example like Collo who was traded for Grigg. Young outside mids or flankers who are easily replaceable quickly in the draft.

We'll try and get Knights and Chaplin for pretty much nothing. That's about all I think

Forget about trading players IN

We seriously need to try (and not be too fussy) and trade a few OUT for picks

Our 22 is pretty decent

disagree have some elite afl standard players and then some pretty good B graders, but after the first 12 or so selected it falls away pretty quick to hopefuls, last chancers and unprovens.

Need to build some better depth. Probably only a couple of trades will happen but that's 2 better than 0

Exactly we can talk about all we need but unless the dud cull fails to materialize then the lesser ilk players will remain for longer in the side meaning we will play them for longer and we all know what rather results of that is.

We need to pen up more places in the 42 to accommodate these new boys.

Get it done Tiges. :thumbsup

We need to address a couple of gaps, no second ruck and more forwards. Fail to fill these gaps and we could have a similar result to 2012 :shh

He is probably in the twilight of his career Johnny.

Would much prefer a more long term ruckman.

He has really good leadership skills.

Gives off a nice handball out the front too.

His tapping is second to none.

Get it done Tiges  :clapping

Our 22 wasnt good enough to beat Port Adelaide or Gold Coast and a whole host of other clubs. Our best 22 is just a very average bunch that has afew stand outs at the top. If we dont improve our list we wont make finals next year AND that will mean we need to make numerous changes IMHO.

Agreed with your  post 10 Flags but  Vickery , Foley , Conca ,Grimes and to a lesser extent Griffiths didn't play they are certain walk up starts  to our 22  .
Port were hungry today  they could sense the over confidence through all the 11-11 talk all week  and played well..
Not sure the above inclusions would of bent their determination , even Cotch telling the lads to play for Newy at 3/4 time didn't bring around the desired result...

In effect you are right sorry

Matt White to Aberfeldie to play along side Tom Hislop next year ?

We need to use free agency to fill a few deficient areas (which it appears we're doing with Chaplin and Knights) plus look for depth, particularly in the midfield. Trading should be avoided unless we're trying to improve our draft order.

If you're meaning trading is far less important no days due to Free Agency then I agree with you. With a club like ours, we can attract far more players via Free agency without having to give up anything. As WP said - trade out but only trade in if the deal is ridiculously good (Grigg for Collins is bordering on this at present!).  :thumbsup

With some of our players you'd be lucky to get offered 3rd rounders for them.

Having said that after today if we were to be offered a few 3rd rounders for some of our blokes I'd take it in a heartbeat

Silly question really given our depth was tested and failed.

Similiar problem at Carlscum - went back to the old hands - Russell, Thornton, Bower etc - and lost games. When Ratten tried the youth (Bell, Levi etc) they started winning a few!! Surprise surprise!

What we do at Tigers - no depth or talent to cover injuries - so we go back to the older hands.
