Right now, the Pies are a side waiting to be beaten by a serious football side. Tiger players could learn something about how to hunt a side for 100 minutes.
Today's game showed the Bombres hunger, last Saturday showed a soft underbelly on a middle of the road side
-
Pies are now getting smashed - obvious from the opening 20 minutes, why the difference in the Tigers?
-
Don't tell me, Rome wasn't built in a day?
-
I already resigned to the fact that it's just same old average Richmond. No expectations, no more disappointment :shh
Sick of watching teams quickly rebuild after a dip. Where as no matter the coach, personnel, anything else, we're stuck in the bottom or only average at best.

100% correct.
They've beaten 2 teams regarded as top 4.
We can learn something from them "no doubt".
Soft footy won't win you finals.
If we don't lift our standard and get tough we will get our pants pulled down every time.

Highlights just how poo we were last week... :help

Agreed. :thumbsup
-
I agree we were poo. Highlights how far we have to go as a side to be a top 4 side.
Some just highlight one facet and miss the entire picture.
Essendon were due on Anzac Day and they played Cloke the way we should have played him.
Live and learn. We have 18 more games.
-
Bombers are also a so called mid table side tucker - grow up

Really, the way some on here in the past have labelled them and their culture HRT and how we should emulate their "winning culture" you would think they were better than a so called mid table side.
Then again not long ago the world applauded and regarded Lance Armstrong as the World's Greatest Athlete also.

And this time last season they were flying - 8 and 1 after 9 rounds and equal top with a 10 goal win over the Eagles included. Fast forward to Round 23 - 11th, 3 more wins in 14 games and a drop of 40%. We have things to learn but Bummer Toughness is not one of them.
-
The main difference when watching the Bombers today is their disposal efficiency under pressure. We continually let the Pies off the hook last week with turnovers under pressure. The other difference is goal efficiency once inside 50, we need to improve markedly in both areas before we will trouble top 4 sides.
-
We've kicked inaccurately all year bar in the second half against the Bulldogs when the heat of the game has been extinguished.
Agree our goalkicking needs real improvement.
-
serously does anyone really think the bombers can maintain this level of play and intensity..I maybe wrong but i would imagine that they wont be able to keep this up for the season
-
history suggests no, last 2 years theyve been on fire in the first 10 rounds then capitulated spectacularly. But then again, they are more mature now so who knows?
-
Lets readdress this thread in about eight rounds or so
-
Next time we play the Pies this year will tell us more, just like tomorrow will against the Dorkers, don compare us to the bumbers you fools.
-
Surely as more and more comes out of this investigation it will place more pressure on the club and it will start affecting them on field.
You can be stoic and unyielding upto a point the Dons I feel are at this stage, eventually the weight of evidence against you will change the public perception and affect your ability to perform.
Then when your mere ability to perform your job on a weekly basis being dependant on the decision of others then that will hinder you further and after a point where you were stoic to start with you feel that there is nothing more you can do and it is all pointless then it will all go downhill. Ie Storm in 2010.

Underlines why we must keep developing Griff down back in order to have someone around 200cm to play on giant forwards.
-
Essendon has a better overall game plan.
A better structure.
Better skillful players.
They run hard offensive and defensively.
They make me sick because like someone on here has said, why do other clubs so easily improve in 2-3 years.
We need to beat a big fish!

Essendon CHEAT and no they arent any better than us, Difference this week to last week was CLOKE! Was a very similar game to when we played the pies i thought
-
Smokey hit the nail on the head. Don't get seduced by the Bombers just yet
This time last year Bombers very flying like they are now, only game they lost in the first 9 weeks was the ANZAC day game.
They fell in heap in the 2nd half. Let's see where they are in 10 weeks time
-
Was a similar thread this time last year about the Bummers on here..
Just sayin :whistle

Rather have a 193cm bloke who can play on big backman beause his a good player than a 200cm bloke who can't play on big backman but his tall

Have faith, he's still a young kid, i see Griff as very similar in his development as what Hwakins was, took a while but he'll just click.
i hope!

yeah, it will interesting to see if they run out of steam again. they definitely hit the ground running while many clubs seem to ease themselves into the season.
One of the thing that has come out in the drugs crap is that there seemed to be an emphasis on recovery for the players and i wonder if this is why they take this full throttle approach from the start of the season.
-
Don't get me wrong I reckon his capable of playing AFL standard and I was an advocate for him going back. But IMO he hasn't shown enough back there to warrant the time wasting developing him there so shove him forward where he has shown glimpses
-
Whether forward or back Griff is fast becoming our version of Scott Gumbleton and the need for him to stay on the park is paramount.
Given our inability to find the right mix in the fwd line with Vickery's inconsistency or that monster in the backline this kid needs to stay fit and play big blocks of games.
I can't get excited anymore if and when he comes back as it is a mere formality he'll be out injured again soon.
The kid is in his fourth season and yes we took a risk in drafting him but the time for excuses in terms of ability to get on the park are starting to wear thin as his prescence is so vital but his absence has been even more vital.
-
Yeah thats what peees me off about him, he just cant stay on the park. Really annoying

Add a dash of drug cheat penalties including loss of points and you've hit the nail on the head

Id say we softened collingwood up, by gee they had to dig deep to win 1/4 of a game and get the points...they were ripe this week :shh
-
bambi is just about road kill :thumbsup.
-
What I took out of today's game is the way their forwards lead up at the ball.. Didn't matter if it was Gumbleton or Davey.. Doing this does two things, it opens up the forwardline for other players and it also gives you more than just that kick down the line from half back which we seem to do when it starts getting hard. Thats why I wouldn't mind seeing A. Edwards get a game..
The other thing they did all day is keep the pill moving, from a free kick or mark, they just play on. What it does, it actually makes people upfield move and give you an option.
Hate to say it but the Bombers looked really good today.
-
Id say we softened collingwood up, by gee they had to dig deep to win 1/4 of a game and get the points...they were ripe this week :shh
According to some we were soft for 120 minutes last week BJ.
We were weak as pee apparently.
It was Collingwood's rigorous training regime that backfired today and Essendon's winning culture.
Funny they took down their 2013 slogan from Wanky Hill when the scandal broke "whatever it takes" yet after their
so far this season those flags and slogans are starting to reappear.
I guess when you have a winning culture that is how you win "whatever it takes"
-
Dreamtime will be interesting....
-
essendon shouldnt be allowed to play this season. its a disgrace that they are allowed to compete. the afl should at the very least deduct points so they cant make the eight and they should also be penalised for next season as well. they should also lose their draft picks. they are scum.
-
Yep free flowing football but the double teaming of Cloke was pivotal in their win today, whilst we had Chaplan standing their on the outside while range went one on one.
Putting that aside, IMO this thread should be deleted I don't want to learn anything from this disgraceful organisation and their pathetic supporters.
Everything about this club makes me sick. The AFL are no better in their allowance that this organisation takes 4 pts away from honest hardworking clubs, like Pies, Tigers etc etc. these 4 pts cost us marketing, sponsorship $$ and potential finals appearances.
Our league will be in disarray very soon when the truth comes out, if its not already

Collingwood were ripe for the taking as the bummers showed today and the Dawks showed two weeks ago.
Problem is we tend to poo ourselves in big games playing soft unaccountable footy and wobbling about with huge heads after beating a bottom four team isn't the way we should've gone about it.
The whole team including the coach got a lesson against the pies, lets just hope we have learnt something because it won't be any easier in Perth.
If we go there trying to play that softie, limp wristed footy we will have our pants pulled down again.
Essenbum is a middle team like us, if they can win there them so can we. And everyone at the club should beleive it and want it.

serously does anyone really think the bombers can maintain this level of play and intensity..I maybe wrong but i would imagine that they wont be able to keep this up for the season
why not some of us did point to their injury toll but hey they didnt get injuries last yr but we did lol.
just maybe all those injuries and being forced to play others has built some real depth.
they have done something twice in the last 4 yrs that we seem incapable of doing and thats make finals. so they have never been as bad as most tiger supporters make em out to be.
i have to ask if we copped essendons injury toll of last yr where do most think we would finish. i have no problem suggesting bottom 4.
-
Claw our list isnt that flash. I cant understand why people seem to think we have a good list. 4 years ago we had the worst list since the dying days of fitzroy. We added Houli and Grigg and Maric. Ok so they have improved us a little bit but we are not a top 4 side. We are a 8 to 10 side and thats about it IMHO. If we cop injuries we would be a 12 to 14 side.

Ramps what if we don't make the finals. Honestly where to from here.
We have recruited these guys to enable us to make finals and if that doesn't eventuate what next.
Re: hardwick do we persist?
I personally think it will a fight to the finish to make finals.

We need to harden the stuff up. We are too soft!
Watch last years finals series again and see what gets you there.
We need to make finals this year.
No excuses!

You didn't think our footy was softie and limp wristed after round 1, in fact you were still celebrating the week we played the Dogs over our win over the Blues.
These are the sort of games we have failed in aren't they? We won in a big game in round 1 in a high pressure situation didn't we? By my recall also we were locked and loaded in 2009 and failed and never been near it since then in round 1 until this year but memories are hazy on some people except of course when they feel the need to justify their age how long they have supported the tigers and how many tins they rattled during save our skins to justify their responses. But I digress.
Furthermore you state that we were weak as pee for 120 minutes hence the result on Saurday yet today Collingwood were ripe to be taken down. Ahahahahahaha that is laughable given both teams had a 5 day break. Given Essendon play in these games every year and bar a few year under Knights in 2008 and 10 were extremely competitive in them
knowing were they were they have been preparing for these games for a long time. Other than Carlton when have we been in a big game even in the last two years when we look at the fixture and say hey we are on the big stage. Dreamtime in 2011 we played in front of 83K and won that night with Essendon having a 5-3 record at the time to our 3-4-1 record. Short memories but again I digress.
To celebrate a win against a hated foe in Carlton so openly in a big game on a big stage regardless of where they sit on the ladder is great but don't go and tell me we were gutless and that we were weak as pee for an entire game because we lost to a better side on the day in a game we were nowhere for 25 of the 120 minutes merely because you think a few words in your dogma "Discipline, Awareness, Belief, Desperate" didn't work out entirely last week.
If the fortunes of a side are going to hinge on 120 minutes in Round 4 against a side that universally even with a few out was more superior than ours given the number of premiership players in it given where we have started from, planned, come from and where we are and you can call us gutless and weak as pee over 120 minutes in your opinion given the amount of footy played and the effort shown and improvement shown then you pal are so hard to please and instead of justifying answers with a few cheap gimmicky words and individual characteristics then pal its not a question of being hard to please its a question of are you ever happy?
Essendon winning culture "whatever it takes" bottle, syringe, guinea pigs, lies, aloofness.
Whether they are mid road side or not is not the issue here but if some want to point that out that's fine.
I'd rather worry about what we are doing and where we are going but hey whatever makes us tick.

Ramps that is poignant.
Anyone thinks otherwise about this footy club and they are in denial.
-
Its going to be a big shitfight to make finals, anyone who thought we were just going to naturally evolve and waltz into a god given right of way to finals is dreaming. We are in the mix with about 6 clubs that could make it or just miss out. Its going to take a bit of luck re injuries and we're going to have to take our chances when they present themselves. So far we have.
Re Essendon, Im sure if the findings come out during the season and they are guilty, then they will be stripped of all premiership points and play out the season not being able to pickup premiership points like the storm in the NRL a few yrs ago.

Last week Dan you and others were applauding the job Hardwick had done.
Whilst there are holes in our list and yes I have mentioned them and where we stand listwise I still feel that we can make the finals.
A loss against a side that has been top 4 the last 4 years as disappointing as it was and all are falling back on the good old Richmond are failing syndrome.
Whilst I am not confident of victory tomorrow I am confident issues regarding our lapses and other things will be addressed tomorrow and the club is heading in the right direction.

it's funny how one loss and the sky is falling
while you may go into every game expecting/hoping to win, it is crazy and veruca salt arrogant like to think that we must win every game.
anyone that thinks we are a monty to be anything better than a bottom of the top eight, at this point in time, is delusional and just setting themselves for a fall so they can whine like spoilt bunnies

I asked the question of Hardwick, that is all. I still think he has done a good job but what if we finals are missed, would you see our season as a positive.
I'm glad you are confident about our future. Personally I am not totally content until I see finals action, something I think we can achieve in 2013 but only just.

Is 12 wins are a failure of if we miss out on %. Yes it is given the clubs expectations and our expectations.
Has Hardwick failed no, but I say this he needs to add kids from the National draft next year and maybe looking to offload a few of these players that won't take us any further to get us up the pecking order in a draft to help those clubs get competitive. Just to digress a club like St Kilda may be a boom for us in offering lets say a Grigg or a Jako for a draft pick second round for example. So whilst I would see the season as a negative if we don't make finals I still see Hardwick as the man to lead us forward.
However judging by your comment that you think that we can make it to finals even only just, you yourself are confident in what is hapenning on field for now but hedging your bets should we not make finals. Like many others we are happy overall just impatient and have been burnt too many times before. I don't have blind faith I just feel we can get there short term and with appropriate picks in the draft and shrewd trading for players and picks we can get even better and dream of top 4 not just making up the numbers in the lower reaches of the top 8. :thumbsup

Ill tell ya one thing about Hardwick, he needs to stop taking whatever he was on when he did that last press conference.

If we cop injuries we would be a 12 to 14 side.
imo ramps the real difference between 4 yrs ago and now is the base from which we need to continue to build from. most dont realise it or at the least acknowledge it but we are still rebuilding and still need to do a lot of it.
what houli and grigg were was value add players. they were upgrades who replaced below standard players.i have no problem with it in fact we dont do enough of it in some ways. imo i think its easy enough to upgrade again on deficient player types like houli and grigg.
imo big ivan was a bargain but we need to make absolutely sure theres a decent ruckman coming behind him that is where we have regularly failed. ivan is now what 27 turning 28 succession planning and ensuring there is a continuation has been poor.
imo we continue to put all of our eggs in one basket or too few baskets. we also continue to hang onto players for too long we have to learn from the past. imo we continue to struggle with list management.
we have 17 18 juniors that is 18 to 21 yr olds. plus about 9 who are development players still 22 -24. in a lot of these cases its too early to say what they will become.
unlike 4 yrs ago we have a lot of youth and a lot of potential. we need to see a good chunk of that potential turn into bona fide players not glass half fulls that we have had to endure for yrs on end.
i think our mature players and vets continue to be the problem. not enough numbers in thses brackets and most certainly not enough quality and leaders. far too many of them are battlers but we are getting closer to fixing this problem just with juniors and development players coming thru.
mature/vets 25 plus are
tuck newman stephenson all have to be close to retirement/delisting.
jackson white, nahas mcguane, lonergan, knights king, derickx a edwards all mature/vet battlers who have real deficiencies or they struggled to get regular games.
chaplin foley deledio maric are the decent mature players. some would argue about these even.
we all know we have the makings of a very very good midfield its everywhere else that needs an awful lot of attention. yet we still need to add to the mids.
there is a lot of building blocks in place and the quality of the list is improving every yr albeit slowly.
thing is there is a lot of other sides in a similar position hence we are a chance to scrape into the 8. for about 12 teams there is no guarantees.
imo hardwick has done a pretty decent job to date he has made us pretty competetive. but i think we should not be expecting a real lot with the current list or the stage the current list is at.

The Carlton win was very special to me as I'm sure it was to all of us.
I overlooked all the errors especially the last quarter because we won that's all that really matters in the end. And yes I am still celebrating that win.
The saints game raised some genuine concerns about our pressure and hardness at the contest.
I mentioned after the bulldogs game that although we had improved our pressure acts in that game we had limited pressure applied by the young bulldogs. I highlighted my concerns numerous times before the pies game. Paul Roos was one of many experts that highlighted the issues I have been concerned about.
You mention that Collingwood is top four, more experienced etc.
yes your completely correct but any team is beatable on any day if your switched on as we proved last year against both the hawks and the swans.
Lastly the dogma, Our Jumper: Discipline, Awareness, Belief, Desperate" , that you kindly refer to as "mine" is written on the bottom left of Dimma's screen when he does his dissection.
P.S. I'm still celebrating the round 1 win against the Cheating Scum. :cheers
