Title: Titch, Kingy & Newy are unrestricted free agents (afl site)
Post by: one-eyed on December 11, 2013, 07:03:56 PM
Who are the big free agency targets in 2014?
Nick Bowen
afl.com.au
December 11, 2013

RICHMOND
Shane Edwards, Jake King, Chris Newman

AFL.com.au says: The Tigers are sitting pretty. Veterans Newman and King resisted free agency this year, both happy to re-sign for 2014. Edwards, 25, also seems unlikely to leave when the club appears on the verge of sustained success for the first time in decades.

ADELAIDE
Jason Porplyzia, Ben Rutten

AFL.com.au says: No major worries for the Crows. Porplyzia and Rutten were free agents this year and re-signed for 2014. Again, at the end of next season, both are likely to either re-sign or retire.

BRISBANE LIONS
Jonathan Brown, Ash McGrath

AFL.com.au says: A stress-free year ahead for the Lions. Brown will almost certainly call time on his stellar career at the end of next season, while McGrath could follow him into retirement, but if he plays on in 2015 should do so at the Lions.

CARLTON
Bryce Gibbs, Michael Jamison, Marc Murphy, Heath Scotland, Kade Simpson, Jarrad Waite, Andrew Walker

AFL.com.au says: Opposition teams will already be eyeing the Blues' smorgasbord of free agents, with Gibbs and Walker, in particular, likely to be heavily targeted. Skipper Murphy is going nowhere, while veterans Scotland, Simpson and Waite are extremely unlikely to leave at this late stage of their careers.

COLLINGWOOD
Tyson Goldsack, Nick Maxwell, Heritier Lumumba (formerly known as Harry O'Brien), Ben Reid, Dane Swan

AFL.com.au says: Swan and Reid are obvious opposition targets but the Pies have reportedly begun contract talks with both. Skipper Maxwell bleeds black and white, but Goldsack might appeal to clubs looking for a tall utility and Lumumba could decided he needs a fresh start after his reported issues with coach Nathan Buckley in 2013.

ESSENDON
Dustin Fletcher, Heath Hocking, Leroy Jetta, Jason Winderlich

AFL.com.au says: Given his importance to the Bombers' midfield, Hocking, 26 next month, looms as a priority re-signing for Essendon. Jetta fell out of favour in 2013 playing just eight senior games and if he continues to struggle for senior opportunities next year could look to move on. Fletcher will probably retire, while Winderlich resisted free agency in 2013 and is unlikely to be tempted in 2014.

FREMANTLE
Paul Duffield, Garrick Ibbotson, David Mundy, Luke McPharlin, Matthew Pavlich, Aaron Sandilands

AFL.com.au says: The Dockers re-signed Ryan Crowley on Tuesday and will be aware Victorian clubs are likely to make aggressive plays for Mundy after his key role in Fremantle's stellar 2013 season. But the Dockers will take heart that the former Murray Bushranger has resisted the temptation to return home in the past. Ibbotson, 25, is a classy player and also likely to attract interest, but elder statesmen Pavlich, Sandilands and McPharlin will only leave Fremantle if they retire.

GEELONG
Corey Enright, Steve Johnson, James Kelly

AFL.com.au says: Geelong signalled a changing of the guard with the delistings of veterans Paul Chapman, Josh Hunt and James Podsiadly at the end of this season, but Johnson and Kelly remain important players and should play on at the Cattery beyond 2014. Enright will turn 33 at the end of next season, but is such a class act he could easily continue in 2015.

GOLD COAST
Nil

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY
Nil

HAWTHORN
Sam Mitchell, Brad Sewell

AFL.com.au says: After battling in vain to hang on to Lance Franklin throughout 2013, the Hawks look set for a far less stressful year with free agency in 2014. Former skipper Mitchell's body and form will dictate whether he plays on in 2015. The Hawks reportedly put Sewell up for trade in October, but the midfielder, who turns 30 in February, will earn a contract extension for 2015 if he satisfies a trigger clause next season.

MELBOURNE
James Frawley, Lynden Dunn

AFL.com.au says: Melbourne's track record of hanging on to its free agents is not good, with Brent Moloney (Brisbane Lions), Jared Rivers (Geelong) and Colin Sylvia (Fremantle) leaving in the past two years. Key defender Frawley will be heavily courted by opposition teams and his decision at the end of next year could come down to whether the Dees' on-field fortunes improve under new coach Paul Roos.

NORTH MELBOURNE
Leigh Adams, Michael Firrito, Todd Goldstein, Lachie Hansen, Brent Harvey

AFL.com.au says: North's priority re-signings will be Goldstein and Hansen. The Roos are already in talks with Goldstein, who told AFL.com.au recently he was confident of re-signing soon. Hansen's ability to play as a key defender or key forward will appeal to rival clubs, but he established himself as a key player in the Roos' backline in 2013.

PORT ADELAIDE
Travis Boak, Dominic Cassisi, Kane Cornes, Tom Logan, Paul Stewart, Justin Westhoff

AFL.com.au says: With skipper Travis Boak close to re-signing, key forward Justin Westhoff will attract the most free agency interest. But the Power will back themselves to hang onto Westhoff, who has become one of their most valuable players.

ST KILDA
Sam Fisher, Jarryn Geary, James Gwilt, Lenny Hayes, Clint Jones

AFL.com.au says: The Saints took skipper Nick Riewoldt and star midfielder Leigh Montagna out of next year's free agency pool, re-signing them last week. Fisher, 32 next July, was linked with Greater Western Sydney in October's trade period but his appeal could be limited by his age.

SYDNEY SWANS
Adam Goodes, Nick Malceski, Ryan O'Keefe, Ted Richards, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Nick Smith

AFL.com.au says: The Swans look well placed to continue their record of not losing a player to free agency. Four of the Swans' five free agents are premiership stalwarts who bleed red and white. Victorian Nick Smith will appeal to rival clubs in the market for a hard-nosed small defender.

WEST COAST
Sam Butler, Dean Cox, Darren Glass, Shannon Hurn, Matt Rosa

AFL.com.au says: Hurn, 25, looms as the prime target for opposition clubs, with Adelaide and Port Adelaide almost certain to try and tempt him back to his home state. However, the defensive playmaker has been a member of the club's leadership group since late 2009 and will be hard to shift from Perth. Victorian Rosa, 27, could also appeal to clubs looking for a running midfielder. The Eagles re-signed prospective 2014 free agent Matt Priddis for an undisclosed term last week.

WESTERN BULLDOGS
Matthew Boyd, Daniel Giansiracusa, Shaun Higgins, Will Minson, Dale Morris, Robert Murphy, Tom Williams

AFL.com.au says: The Bulldogs faced a big decision with Adam Cooney this year and must make an equally tough call on Higgins next year. Cooney overcame a debilitating knee injury to earn a two-year contract extension this year after an outstanding 2013 season. You suspect Higgins, 25, will also have to put his injury problems behind him to play on at the Bulldogs beyond next season. Last year's All Australian ruckman Will Minson will be a priority re-signing for the Bulldogs.

Newy and Kingy will retire at the end of next year you would reckon so it's irrelevant if they are free agents.

When we've targeted free agents from other clubs we've gone after Vics playing at interstate clubs  - Knights and Chaplin. Mundy would be a massive get for any club but it's hard seeing him leave Freo without it costing big $$$.

Newman will either retire or get another year, depending on his season. Can't see him playing elsewhere.
King will be delisted/"retire"
Edwards is the only worry, but still can't see him leaving. I thought he re-signed a year ago or so? Maybe not.

Kingy well I reckon he could be finished depends on how he goes this year needs to kick at least 30 goals providing he actually gets a game
newman same as kingy depends on the year and if he doesn't lose any more pass on the game

I reckon he doesn't. Whilst we may not be able to stop him hanging out with Toby, we can sure as hell not give him another contract. He was struggling by the end of last year. I think he's in trouble.

Seems like one of the only ones around here that actually rates Kingy and values what he brings to the team. He's coming back from injury at the moment, but we dont exactly have a plethora of talented small forwards. I wouldn't be writing him off just yet.

Not being a smart arse. can i ask what improvement has there been from the younger small forwards. as average as king is he continued to get games because no one did enough to force him out.

theres two options to get rid of king short term  atm.
1/ mcdonough. i cant see it though. hes being developed across h/b and more thru midfield. it seems they arent looking at mcdonough as a forward anymore, which is amazing considering where  we are at with small forwards and just how much we have struggled to find one over the yrs.
.
2/ lloyd  hes a mature player but hes going to have to force his way in. you can ask in all seriousness can he provide more than king? geez i bloody hope so. i think we need to find out one way or the other but thats just what id like to see.

then theres banfield but hes going to have to wait until a lti happens if he even shows enough in the twos.
thats it not a great situation imo.

we targeted a lot of smls and mediums to address forward line problems but did we address anything at all. time will tell i suppose.

one thing i am sure of though. for us to become a genuine contender the likes of king houli grigg newman shane edwards  and a few others i wont name to avoid argument just have to become superfluous to needs and not regular top 22 players.

if say  in being realistic a premiership is gained in 4 yrs time.  i can only say with certainty that  maybe  12 0r 14  on the current list will be a part of it. we are going to turn plenty of  players over no matter that people think other wise.

Titch Tambling and Newman can leave now for free

As I have consistently over the last 4 years they are finished and we should have traded/dumped their sorry arses a long time ago

Tambling. 2 great half seasons since joining
(2012 and I think 2008) rest not worth peeing on
Quick hands. Please. I have quick hands to when I'm rubbing one out doesn't mean I can play footy

Newman. To be honest I know its harsh but when I heard he did his hammy or whatever it was, I was relieved in the hope he wouldn't play first few games because he is soft as butter and is finished as an afl footballer. Looking forward to see him spud it up against the blues

Yes Ellis and Conca were bad and some although I don't agree Hampson too, at least they are relatively new. These 2 hacks have been raping us for the last 5 years providing nothing but a waste of time

The tomfoolery must end now and these 2 shouldn't play again this year

The Buzz: Jon Ralph rates all 58 AFL free agents from the class of 2015

Jon Ralph
Herald-Sun
March 19, 2014

Here is my early assessment of who is a chance to move, who might be a bargain-basement proposition, and who is battling for another deal.

Shane Edwards (Richmond)

Amazing to think how quickly free agency comes around for players like Edwards, who is only just coming into his own as a Tiger.

Started winning important clearances for Richmond last year and can also kick a goal. Needs to continue to improve if they are to go places.

Jake King (Richmond)

Last week we wondered if he was in Richmond’s best 22. Then the Tigers lost to the Suns and were crying out for a clever small forward.

Will likely be back in against Carlton and has a contract clause that sees him winning another year with 12-plus games.

Time for him to fire again after the summer headlines and distractions.

Chris Newman (Richmond)

Like him as a small forward. Still could be his last year, but after playing his first final last year he might want to maintain the rage for one more season.

All three quite expendable.
agree.
edwards whole career has borderd on mediocre/average.  the only yr he really had some hurt factor about his game was in 2012 where he kicked what 30 goals.
he does get clearances came 4th i think for us last yr but this just highlights to me at just how poor across the board we are in this area. his clearance rate worked out to be about 3 a game which  is in fact nothing special.

newman should have retired last yr is not the answer forward and is just too slow down back.

king sheesh how poor are the rest of our small forwards if jake is the answer. most laud him as a defensive forward yet he lays few tackles , doesnt consistently kick goals and is very limited in the roles he can perform.
we got jake in 07 for what should have been a short term upgrade on others, it is inconcievable with his skill set and for his type that he has lasted to now.

Edwards should be played forward as simple as that with very occasional stints on the ball. If he can't score goals then pressure must come on his spot from the likes of Lloyd but Shane must be played forward.

SHANE EDWARDS (Richmond)

State of play: Richmond has opened talks to secure Edwards, with a two-year deal believed to be on the table. Like former Tiger Matt White last year, Edwards could attract offers from teams looking to inject pace into their midfield or half-forward line. But Edwards, 25, is unlikely to be aggressively targeted until later in the year, if he remains unsigned.

What would it take? Edwards is likely to get between $300,000-350,000 to stay at Richmond, so rival clubs might have to offer up to $400,000 to sign him. A three or four-year deal could also be used as bait.

What compensation would Richmond get? End-of-second-round or third-round pick.

We say: Will re-sign with Richmond.

Absolute joke if this hack get's a three-year deal, even bigger joke if they shell out 350k for it. This club never learns. pee him off already and get a half-decent pick while we still can.

I'd offer Shane a 2 year deal at 350k which would be reasonable.
If a SA club offers 3 then good luck to him.

Newie and Kingy I expect will retire.

Newie and Kingy I expect will retire.

AFL Website carrying an interview with Newy today saying he is planning on playing on in 2015

If the Club are serious about making tough decisions then they will not allow this to happen IMHO

Titch isn't worth $35 Let alone 350k.
I can see the club panicking over what happened with Matt White and how he and his club are performing this year and knee jerking to keep this list clogger at the club for a few more years.
I hope I am wrong.

In my opinion and I dont mean any disrespect to the players.
Newy should get the tap, or alternatively I would be happy for him to play in the reserves and offer his leadership to the kids in there.
Jake king, retire seasons end, love the push king but has a growing injury list and is up against it with age a factor.
Shane Edwards, could he become a crumbing forward pocket if the coach actually left him there? Dont know why the stuff he swings from midfield to flanks etc etc. Otherwise offer a one year contract and leave in one position to excel then talk bigger contracts next year if he has performed well.

Agree EEA.
Should stay in the forward 50. He aint a midfielder. Dimma needs to understand that.

jeezus h chrisst . the outlook should be with an eye on the end of the yr and our list.

newman, king, s edwards, grigg and a edwards are the obvious stand out mature players on the list proper who should be in the gun.yet we offer up contracts.

newman - 32yo who doesnt have a role to perform and has dropped off significantly as far as performance goes. he should be playing twos.
king - 30 yo. hes just plain ordinary and he always has been. its typical a short term upgrade becomes a long term mediocre performer.just has to go.
s edwards - 26yo ffs 8 yrs of what, how anyone can defend this bloke is beyond logic.   he should be cut or traded performance/and skillset  over a long period demands it.
a edwards - 30 yo is not a tall and we have better medium sized options imo.could be kept because we have so few tall fwds who can mark. was a good short term fix lets keep it a short term fix and develop.
grigg - 26yo. was a medium term upgrade it is time to find a way better more rounded player.
foley - 29 yo sml/mid going thru another ordinary season which is one of many poor seasons recently. there has to be questions asked. of the 6 mature players hes probably the safest.
i reckon the last 3 perform better roles for us than s edwards.

younger blokes in the gun.
helbig - 22yo mid in yr 4 and done exactly what.has to be in strife if he cant force his way into the team and impress.
batchelor - 22 yo med/def serious deficiencies in his game should have the alarm bells screeeching. 4 yrs in and i cant find an excuse for him.
o hanlon - 21 yo med /fwd has shown  little.  in his 3rd season has to be questions. age may save him.

mature rookies
stephenson 32 yo ruckman. does anyone really think he should be on our list.
thomas - 27yo with his skillset and lack of pace surely he is nothing more than a short term fix.
banfield - 24yo again sml/med/fwd has pace but little else. could include williams and darrou. darrou in particular is in yr 3 and not promoted.
petterd - yeah hes on the list proper but this is where he should be.

as wa tiger said all of newman king and s edwards have to go.

If we only offer 1 year and average coin to Greg White then these 3 should receive similar (or no) offers. But 2 should retire and one is never going to play in a premiership.
