Six clubs to attend international combine in LA

SIX clubs have sent scouts to this week's US AFL International Combine in Los Angeles as they look to gain an edge in list management.
Recruiters from Collingwood, the Sydney Swans, Richmond, Fremantle, Port Adelaide and North Melbourne will attend the three-day testing from Friday, where 20 American athletes will test under AFL conditions.
They will go through the same agility, sprinting, jumping and endurance tests that Australian hopefuls experience at the NAB AFL Draft Combine in October, as well as be introduced to the oval-shaped ball from Friday through to Sunday.
Clubs will assess the players' ability to handle and use the ball, and whether they can transition to the AFL game like the three Americans currently listed as international rookies in the competition: Patrick Mitchell (Sydney Swans), Eric Wallace (North Melbourne) and Jason Holmes (St Kilda).
Again, the large majority of the prospects will be taller players, as the AFL identifies possible ruckmen and key defenders, and the early signs are that the players are becoming more and more accustomed to the Australian game.
"It's an evolving thing, and we've held two combines in America previously," AFL national talent manager Kevin Sheehan told AFL.com.au from America.
"The first time we actually introduced them to the game at the combine. The next year, most had researched it and looked it up, and followed it.
"It's gone up another level. They were competing for spots to get in and there was enormous interest from our agents over here to win places and come in and show their talent. Athletically they're right up there with some of the best we've ever tested.
"That doesn't mean they'll be able to convert and play the game, so we're still in this development phase to see whether we can convert them from basketball, NFL and soccer backgrounds."
The combine will be run by AFL Academies development manager Michael Ablett and Sydney Swans premiership player Tadhg Kennelly.
The League is confident it is not overlooking homegrown talent in favour for overseas options, citing the success of ex-Demon Jim Stynes and Swans ruckman Mike Pyke.
"Diversity of people, talent and backgrounds is so important to the game, and so is competition for spots," Sheehan said.
"You can't ignore Jim Stynes' contribution, and he represents all of that by coming from another sport, another country and another code."
The players are essentially 'free hits' for the clubs, who can sign them throughout the year as international rookies.

Lanky Yank Mason Cox heads down under

TOWERING American Mason Cox will head to Australia later this month to be trialled by four AFL clubs interested in signing him as an international rookie.
Cox, who at 211.4cm is the tallest player ever tested by the AFL in Australia or overseas, was a standout at last month's USA Combine at Los Angeles.
His speed, agility and ball-handling impressed onlookers, so much so that he will travel to Australia and take another important step towards joining an AFL list.
"We will manage his program over the course of eight days, and he will test at four of the clubs, so it's going to be pretty exciting," Kevin Sheehan, the AFL's national talent manager, told AFL.com.au.
"We'll do some work with him on the skills of the game initially with (former Sydney Swan) Tadhg Kennelly and (Academies development manager) Mick Ablett and then it's up to the clubs.
"The four clubs will obviously go over him with a fine-tooth comb and see whether they think he's got the potential to be maybe the next Mike Pyke who can come over and be an important player in our game, probably in the ruck position."
Six clubs – North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Collingwood, Richmond, Fremantle and the Sydney Swans – attended the three days of testing in America.
American trio Jason Holmes (St Kilda), Eric Wallace (North Melbourne) and Patrick Mitchell (Sydney Swans) are already on AFL lists as international rookies, and Sheehan believes more clubs are viewing America as a fertile recruiting ground.
"I think the next frontier is no doubt the USA," he said.
"The prospects are very bright for boys from that part of the world."

Giant draft prospect Mason Cox put through his paces at Etihad

CLUBS watched on as American prospect Mason Cox kicked off his trial for a place on an AFL list with an hour's training session at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.
Recruiters from North Melbourne, Collingwood, Richmond and Port Adelaide were present as the 211cm former basketball and soccer player went through a range of skill-related drills.
Kangaroos coach Brad Scott was also in attendance.
As part of his eight-day visit to Australia, Cox will spend a day at each of the four clubs as the bidding begins to gain his signature as an international rookie.

Cox's height made him the tallest athlete ever tested at an AFL Combine in Australia or abroad. He ran the 20-metre sprint in three seconds flat, and 11.59 minutes for the three-kilometre time trial.
The 23-year-old's soccer background makes him a unique prospect for the Australian code.
He played soccer from age five through to 18 in Dallas where he grew up, and then had a growth spurt, which saw him convert late to basketball at Oklahoma State University.

I'd throw in Cox next week if we could. Couldn't be any worse than Hampson
-
North Melbourne will get a closer look on Wednesday afternoon, while Cox will head to the Kangaroos' match against Geelong on Friday night as well as Saturday's Port Adelaide and Hawthorn clash.
He will also spend a day with Richmond and the Power before making two key decisions: does he want to be an AFL player and, if so, at which club?
"I came out here for a reason," he said. "I've got plenty of other stuff going on in my life. If it wasn't a legitimate option I wouldn't be here.
"I'm looking for the best opportunity out there."
