Richmond a team in turmoil
By Caroline Wilson
The Age
May 22, 2014, 8:21 p.m.
Jack Riewoldt’s decision to break ranks on Wednesday has angered his club and placed even more pressure on his beleaguered coach Damien Hardwick – a man whose mixed public messages during the Tigers’ horror season have only served to further confuse the situation.
Hardwick has been so bereft of answers he has resorted to seeking mediocre positives and making promises his players have repeatedly failed to keep.
Repeated assurances that the club is moving in the right direction, any talk of improvement or mention of injuries is just embarrassing and an insult to the club’s much-lauded record number of members and game-day spectators who were so cruelled at the MCG last September.
Hardwick’s team in 2013 and often even in 2012 was one of the most exciting to watch in the competition. Now Richmond is generally unwatchable; scared of playing and frightened of losing and no one can – or has been prepared to – explain why.
The ongoing commentary about poor recruiting decisions and the mediocrity of the list does not wash. Richmond might not boast a top four list but nor does its list rank in the bottom four. More than one-third of the way through the season it is time for the coaching group to accept as it surely has that it has failed dismally this year.
The club has warned against over-analysing the reasons behind Riewoldt’s comments. As horrified as the Tigers’ were by his apparently thoughtless disloyalty, they believe he is without guile and had no hidden agenda.
On Thursday morning he received a blast from the coach who did not rule out dropping him for the GWS game – he eventually didn’t – and was also lectured by executives Brendon Gale, Daniel Richardson and Simon Matthews.
He is believed to have been embarrassed and contrite and underlined his apology with repeated utterances relating to his strong affection for and admiration of the senior coach. He did not face the leadership group of which he was a part last year. None of which gets away from the fact that Riewoldt was clearly telling the truth when he said: ‘‘We probably tried to copy Hawthorn a little bit too much with our kicking style ... we went one way with our game and the game went the other way.’’ Or at least his version of the truth.
The genuine hope now is that the Tigers abandon damage control for five minutes and focus on the disconnect between the coaches and players. Clearly the message is not getting through for so many players to have been down against Melbourne given the stakes last Saturday. Half of the leadership group is failing on the field and collectively that quartet must be struggling off it.
If Riewoldt’s misgivings about the team’s direction are exclusive to him then that too needs to be thrashed out. Perhaps, and it is a belated hope despite empty comments by Brendon Gale and others that finals remain an ambition, the explosive Jack’s gaffe could prove the circuit breaker in tandem with the limp loss to the Demons.
Because the signs that something is not right at the club came long before the Tigers’ listless round-one opening against the Gold Coast. In fact Richmond has not truly looked convincing as a team since – ironically – it defeated Hawthorn in round-19 last year.
What followed apart from some truly mediocre football was the Jake King, Toby Mitchell incident which dragged into summer, a series of Dustin Martin indiscretions culminating in him briefly walking out on the club and some perplexing off-field issues.
President Gary March, having achieved so much, left the club in a huff and almost did not attend the Jack Dyer Medal function. March was angry his man and a board split briefly shadowed the club. Peggy O’Neal was installed in a suprise decision.
Questions also remained regarding the quality of the coaching minds surrounding Hardwick after some departures in 2013 and then early this year came Riewoldt’s omission from the leadership group and subsequent dummy spit.
Perhaps his ill-timed comments on Wednesday suggested that the rudderless onfield rabble we have seen on the playing arena in 2014 is being mirrored behind the scenes.

Still banging on about the Jake King non-incident. Obsessed much Caro?
-
Yeh, cos king having coffee with a butchers hook derailed our season.
-
A two time Coleman Medallist was lectured by Brendon Gale, Simon Matthews and Daniel Richardson
:lol
-
Never seen 2 consecutive successful AFL seasons of this club in my lifetime. What a farce
-
When did Dusty walk out on the club? :huh3
-
Guys bag Caro all you want ,but she is spot on bigtime on alot of her points !!.
-
Yeh, cos king having coffee with a butchers hook derailed our season.
In isolation yes but her context was that it was one of many things. I read this as being that there is a gulf between player and administration.
-
Who proof checked the article. Large parts of it make no sense at all. Quality journalism at its best
-
When did Dusty walk out on the club? :huh3
He left the club briefly
-
Sums things up pretty well sadly
In isolation yes but her context was that it was one of many things. I read this as being that there is a gulf between player and administration.
Yep that's how I took it too
-
When did Dusty walk out on the club? :huh3
He left the club briefly
Contract negotiations were stalled, he wanted more $$$$ same reasons dale Thomas and Franklin

Err No, he was always contracted, contracted until 31-10-2013 so while he was looking at other sides he was still technically a Richmond player ;D

My mail from unbiased neutral observers is this
We don't train nearly as hard as other clubs - fact
After round 1 loss .major issues surfaced between playing group and coach
- fact
Dimma says yesterday that it's a family and keep it in house .well why are players complaining to the managers after Round 1
No one really knows what is said behind close doors although it's fair to assume that what was said and how there playing means the players have fallen out with coach
You cannot play this bad for no reason
-
OK I'm now starting to find sensationalizing from the media ridiculous. As soon as Richmond lose a few games all of a sudden everything is being questioned, everything is wrong, everything is failing, everything we have done up until now is a mistake and all of our list are over rated and failures. Come on! :huh3
Yes, we've had a bad start to the season and yes our game plan and some of our players have been found out by the opposition but the situation is not irreconcilable. :chickenlittle
All we need to do is start winning the contested ball, change our stoppage set ups and reclaim our confidence and we will turn the season around. Maric will play a big part in this as will Miles (if he ever plays :banghead). Its our midfield that is getting beaten and the way our forward-line is functioning as a result. If we can start by focusing on winning the ball and moving it out of the additional congestion we will start winning games.
Sadly though, finals can no longer be a realistic goal this year regardless of how quick we turn things around imo

If we changed all those things you talk about does the list at Richmond win a flag in the next 3 years? The answer is no.
The problem is we have to many hacks at Richmond especially those brought in from other clubs some of whom are on very decent money. The club could have taken this money and pooled it to try and get an A grader but instead they got us 4 "D" grade players. The whole philosophy of the place is up poo creek. We are never going to be a successful football club again having this administration in place. They are just a group of people down their just looking to protect each others backs and each others jobs. Its a stuffing joke.

Would reckon ramps is on the money
What does Dimma.Choco .Blair .Max Bailey .Wilbur Williams .Troy Chaplin .Matt Thomas .Ross Smith have in common ?
They have all previous worked .played or been associated with Dimma
All yes men and all deluded

i think a constant theme for some of us has been the list is greatly overrated despite winning 15 games last yr. ffs even richo has come to see this and spoken his mind on it.
when caro says we arent a top 4 side and not a bottom 4 side shes probably right this yr at least. so that makes us one of 10 sides who are a middling team.
when gws melbourne wb and even the skilda kids start improving we will probably become a bottom 4 side. we have little upside atm too many our juniors are looking ordinary.
a lot of the good work that was done end of 09 10 and 2011 has been undone in a big way.
the introduction of one or two players maric miles will not improve our lot in the long term, in fact its likely to do more harm than good in the short term. on maric what happens when hes gone we dont have anyone who remotely looks capable of adequately filling his boots. miles is just 1 mid where are the others coming thru.list management or succession planning is non existent.
the list has always lacked quality and depth yet so few will acknowlege this. so few are willing to acknowledge that we took the wrong stuff in the road and we desperately need to reverse back to that stuff and take the right road.
if we fail to do this we will without doubt spend the next 10 yrs in the wilderness.
as you say we got plenty right to start with there has been over all improvements in most things off field but ffs recruiting development and list management remain ordinary at best. we cannot move forward on field unless we address and fix these be alll end all things.

We were just outside the top 4 last year. If we had finished 4th and matched up against the Hawks we were a real chance to beat them and then possibly play Freo (who were had also just beaten). The point I'm making is that our performance last year was with this same list. There has been very little changes yet we find ourselves at the reverse end of the ladder. Why? If it was Dimma and his crew then why didn't it happen last year? Why have we gradually been improving every year?
I think people are just looking for scapegoats as usual and at Richmond that straight away means the coach. That's b@ll.poo! I don't want to start again, to rebuild from scratch, to begin at the bottom. A team that went as far as we did based on the performances of mainly young kids is not a team to scrap. Something has changed and we need to find answers rather than look to point the finger, over react, listen to the media and do a mass cull of players and admin.
If we make the changes I'm suggesting and we continue to develop our young talent then yes we could win the flag. People will scoff at that but the difference between good years and bad are often as much about injuries, unexpected youth development, consistency and a unexpected game plan....plus a bit of luck. Hawthorn, Freo, Collingwood etc lists aren't much better than ours but they believe they are. They know their roles, they have the game plan and they have the faith in each other that they can beat anyone. We don't.
My two biggest gripes about Dimma and his coaches is that we do not have a plan B and we do not spend enough time dissecting the oppositions game plan. We need to change what we are doing, everyone knows that many of our players can't perform when you defend closely against them. Dimma needs to coach these players what to do and if they can't do it switch them with players that can.
This year is now a year to experiment and adapt. The game has changed again and we either need to catch up or find strategies to beat it. Be annotative. Try new things and new players.
If after this year we are still playing the same way with the same players then I will join with you and demand Dimmas exit but until then I don't think we need to rebuild everything just yet.
-
Sports critics are dumb. If we won 3 in a row they would be saying the opposite about us.
-
First of all I think we deserve whack that is currently coming our way from the media and it shouldn't surprise. TBH the only surprise is that it's taken them to round 9 to do it.
They target a club a week and last week it was the RFC and I again say quite rightly. Our season thus far has been pathetic, disgusting and gutting
It is not so much the losses but who we have lost to and how we have lost. I mean losing to the Bulldogs & Melbourne bottom 5 sides last years - please that is inexcusable
To play the crappy style footy we are is unforgivable
Reckon Ramps is on the money about our recruiting. :clapping We have rewarded blokes (and Grigg is the perfect example) with contract extensions when they don't warrant them. We've actually given extensions when in some cases the player concerned still had a year to go (Grigg again). Why? That's one of the reasons why we are in this mess
I don't think anyone can dispute that the Coach clearly plays favourites and IMV at some point the players who are not getting a go at it are going to start questioning "what the"...and really who can blame them?
-
Yeh, cos king having coffee with a butchers hook derailed our season.
In isolation yes but her context was that it was one of many things. I read this as being that there is a gulf between player and administration.
Not true. It's all speculation, opinion and innuendo. I know firsthand her assertion about March leaving in a huff is absolutely fabricated and untrue.
She is just trying to sell papers. Crap journalism at its worst. Go and support some oath club Caro.
-
There are problems & its some of the players in the side who are the problem. Big names that need to be moved on as forwards are easy to replace as they are just fed footballers who do very little apart from kicking goals, Rewoldt & Vickery need to be banished to the reserves for the remainder of the season & offer them for trade at seasons end. That alone rids us of problems. Retire Newman & A Edwards. Griffiths to FF & McBean & get it on. Recruit a mongrel small backman who cleans up players like Ballanytne & the ball. Recruit anyone related to Rioli ;D

I agree that questions needed to be asked and it would be naive to believe that we could avoid scrutiny altogether. I do believe that the media do like to target us at any opportunity because it sells papers and generates plenty of interest. Do you really believe that Jacks slip was really worth all the attention and discussion it generated? A little perspective from the media and fans would be nice and while its while the over-exaggeration is not surprising is still ridiculous imo. Some of the media rhetoric has been ludicrous.

Obviously Grigg is highly rated by the club and must fulfill his role extremely well. My problem is not with Grigg its more with his role now. I'm not convinced that role is viable any longer. You can't have a player who plays completely uncontested and unaccountable playing well off the contest any longer. These players need to assist around the contest or we will be out numbered. I don't think Grigg can play this new role now so yes - the club made a mistake here. When was the contract extended? If it was recently then they have no excuse if it was at the beginning of the year then you could suggest that they didn't realize that this change would occur. These link/unaccountable/outside players are never popular with supporters because we think them soft so Griggs always going to be on a hiding for nothing. He was crap last week no doubt!

Fair enough Jack. I don't have the inside knowledge of how this truly operates to form an opinion.

It was last year when he had this year to go. They gave him another 2 I believe.
No need for it, poor list management. But Blair obviously rates him because Blair's rating system determines who gets offered what ;D

When did that happen, was only 6 months earlier the coach played a fairly key role in us retaining our top 10 players that all fell out of contract .....there's an awful lot of 2 and 2 = 5 going on ::)

We deserve all the criticism we get at this point in time.
Many moons ago there was a world cup qualifier in which Poland beat England 1-0,and knocked England out.The next day the Sun in the Uk ran the headline Poland 1,Turnips 0...I think the latter name aptly fits us at this time

I ain't actually
People want to know .just tell them
What's been reported is pretty well much known at other clubs
Players just can't help themselves talking to there mates at other clubs etc
At least Jack Riewoldt told the truth unlike Hardwick and Gale who talk spin etc
Amazing how not one person from the media has asked Hardwick one simple question and that question would be as follows
How do you think your coaching ?
I will answer it and say 2 out of 10 ?
There lies the problem ;)
