Round 15 - ST KILDA vs RICHMOND
2:10 PM, June 28, 2014, Etihad Stadium
--------------------------------------------------
St Kilda could be without in-form veteran Lenny Hayes for Saturday's clash with Richmond after the midfielder pulled up sore at Monday's recovery session.
Coach Alan Richardson described the 34-year-old as 50-50 to take on the Tigers as the Saints prepare for an opportunity to climb off the bottom of the ladder.
Alan Richardson was at the MCG on Friday night to watch Richmond fade and eventually lose to the Sydney Swans after an impressive first half.
He said his team's improved defensive effort against the Eagles would need to be repeated against the Tigers, who are level with the last-placed Saints on three wins.

Preview: St Kilda v Richmond

June 25, 2014
Who would have thought Richmond would find itself in a battle to avoid the wooden spoon in round 15? Locked on three wins each, the Tigers (16th) and Saints (18th) have endured forgettable seasons, but the expectations were much higher for Damien Hardwick's men. They take improved form into Saturday's clash after pushing the Sydney Swans for a half last Friday night, but the Saints were also encouraged by their defensive efforts against the Eagles, despite falling 33 points short. Both sides should be desperate to regain some respect.

THE SIX POINTS
1. Richmond defeated St Kilda by 64 points the last time the sides met with Trent Cotchin picking up three Brownlow votes. Jack Riewoldt and Dan Jackson kicked three goals each.
2. The Saints continue to struggle to hit the scoreboard and are ranked 17th for points scored, averaging 64 per game. They have kicked 10 goals or fewer in each of their past four games.
3. St Kilda has dominated Richmond at Etihad Stadium, winning 10 of the past 11 clashes. The clubs drew when they met at the MCG in 2011.
4. Jack Riewoldt is the No.1 player in 2014 for marks inside 50, taking an average of 4.5 per game. Nick Riewoldt is also in the top 10 with 2.6 per game.
5. Riewoldt enjoys playing the Saints more than any opposition, kicking 33 goals in nine games, including four hauls of six and three bags of seven.
6. Richmond defender Alex Rance jumped eight spots in the Official AFL Player Ratings, brought to you by Gatorade, after his entertaining duel with Lance Franklin in round 14. He is now ranked No.104 overall and No.5 among defenders.
Prediction: Richmond by 38 points

Must Lose game, need best draft positioning
If we can jag one loss in the next two weeks we are looking good for a top 3 pick. What a shame we have the saints twice in the run home. Carlton are the danger of stealing pick 3 from us, they will be lucky to get 1 more win for the season. The other sides on 4 wins are in good enough form to get another win or two.
-
Geez even the Saints are resting players like Lenny Hayes against the Tigers.
Feels like pre-2011.
-
I hope we lose. Its in the best interests of the RFC that we lose.

Why ? All the recruiters are saying the draft is a lottery this year. Pick 1 through to pick 8 could get drafted in any order and even if we got the first pick I wouldn't be confident we'd get it right. Always best to try and win or else you end up with Melbourne's losing culture. We've got enough culture problems of our own without adding that one.
-
Never ever want to lose but this is just a massive non event, don't know wtf I'm bothering to go to be honest.
Oh free ticket with 16 game membership for tigers, lol@getting desperate :help

I don't buy that meaningless wins in junk time of a failed season build a "winning culture". Only wins when the stakes are high matter. How many of the times we've come home with a wet sail after the season is shot and got up to mid-table finish have actually translated into success the following year? All it seems to do at Richmond is paper over cracks, cause us to get ahead of ourselves and overrate the list again. It's amazing how Port won stuff all for two years then suddenly got a good coach, top line fitness staff and managed to turn it all around immediately. Melbourne have a been a complete rabble for about five of the last six years....get a good coach, smart trades & drafting on top of all the top picks they've accumulated and are suddenly playing with twice the desire, skill & intent, that will eventually translate into success. Hell, even Jack Watts is looking like he actually wants to be there.
Even back in 2005 after our last wooden spoon in 2004 which IIRC ended with 14 consecutive losses, we got a new coach, who for all his flaws was at least better than Frawley, snagged Deledio and were well on track for the finals until our (and arguably the competition's) best player that year broke his leg.
Identifying and dealing with the deficiencies, smart recruiting, new people with a new attitude & higher standards are more likely to usher in a winning culture than meaningless wins from the season before. If anything I think the latter is ultimately detrimental at Richmond for the reasons I've stated.
Just to be clear, I'm not saying tank, I'm saying get blokes carrying niggles & injuries like Cotchin & Morris fit for the pre-season, play the kids, with simple instructions to take the game on not worry about mistakes or the scoreboard and just let the chips fall where they may.

How does Vickery get a game when the Big O is flying ?
Vickery washing and polishing the coaches cars
That called getting a game on performance

I agree. All I was really saying is I don't think the positives outweigh the negatives when teams tank. Didn't work for Melbourne or Carlton.
Oh and you can forget about the ' play the kids ' bit. Hardwick has said he won't be doing that.

I would take Dylan Shiel in a heartbeat. Tough as nails that kid and clearly GWS best when we played them a month or so ago. Has played some wonderful footy for GWS this year. :thumbsup

winning any games will give the bozos running the club the view that all is well and we will spend the next 20 years being poo. they need to understand that our list is poo. that is all. its complete utter poo.
-
We have finished in the bottom half of the ladder more or less ever since the draft began(20 years ago),we have had a hatfull of top 10 or 20 picks ,and it hasn't made a scrap of difference .We all here talk about changing the culture of the club ,a good start would be to get a winning culture.
-
theyre mentally broken down at Punt Road but they dont realise it. The players are broken, the administration doesnt know what its doing, they whole place is for the tip.
-
If the problem is mental and my gut feeling is you're right, then our main priority should be not finishing as low as possible but rather enlisting people of character and substance to the club, people who don't throw the towel in.And I'm talking both on field and off field
-
Work is done
And
I've decided to
Go to the game, only because it is Dusty Matin's 100th and he deserve a decent crowd for this milestone
-
celebrate with dusty, because given our track record in milestone games it probably wont mean a flying toss bag to his team mates

wow this is a good post. well done sir well done indeed.
only thing id argue with is ports time frame. 5yrs it took em to how to put it regenerate their list. hartlett, broadbent, trengove, schulz, butcher moore pittard, young, oshea, wingard, blee ebert wines, jonas, hombsch, monfries, were all taken from 08 to 12 along with others. they have made a few mistakes along the way but they have got so much right a few mistakes havent hurt em.

excellent post :clapping

Going the same way as the GWS game so far although the Saints are trying but are just too crap even for us. No Saint can go with Cotch and Dusty and Jack is again on track to kick another bag against St Kilda. The only question now is will we burn up in the 2nd half as we've done in most games this year. Cotch has been like a man possessed with his workrate.
-
Chaplin is god awfuly slow
-
im liking Vlastuin leading up as a half forward.
Vickery same old same old

It's very symbolic that David King has spent almost the entire game in the St. Kilda coaches box :huh, because the commentary team has been barracking for the Saints all day.
It's so bad I think I'll turn the sound down in the second half.

Stuff me how are we still 30 up. That was woeful.
Only because it's the Saints and they are stuffing up good chances to punish us.
Once again we've had far more of the ball yet less inside 50s. Beaten in the clearances as well despite more contested ball. Just 23 tackles to half-time too. That's virtually one each in a half a footy.
Interesting to see if we run out of juice again in the second half. We were already being outworked in the last 15 mins of that 2nd qtr and that was by an inexperienced bottom side. Too much left to too few and when our top half-dozen tire and aren't dominating we just fall away completely as a team.
-
Here we go :sleep :banghead
-
We have one gear and one gear only, saints lifting and we're struggling to keep up

Slow play in the backline, most missing targets and the opposition getting a couple of quick easy goals.

No, unsurprisingly the worst culprit is Eddie McChins. "Saints need two goals" is his mantra. He was screaming for a 50 metre penalty when Batchelor came in late and got his opponent round the neck, but was predictably quiet when Lids got ridden into the ground after taking a mark. Seriously, I'd like to neck the Collingwood See You Next Tuesday.

That was exceptional vision and skill from Martin to find Ellis, commentators are that peeed not one of them mentioned it yet last night Everytime heppell dished off a handball it was a circle jerk
stuffing wankers
-
Rance to Lids at half-back to Cotchin to Foley to Flossy. Now out to Petterd. Finds Jack 48m out. Goes for Conca but misses. Conca though gathers and finds Flossy. Goal :gotigers

What a dumb idiot^

We kicked the first 4 goals and the last 3. So that's the margin there of 7 goals. The rest of the game was even on the scoreboard and for large periods in the middle two quarters we didn't see anything different from what we've seen from the rest of the season so far.
The win will give the Club a break from any negative media but it doesn't change the fact that significant changes need to made at the end of the season.

In our eyes, but pretty confident the brains trust will see this as vindication nothing is wrong ::)
-
Yeh look. We really turned a corner today.
It's where want to be
-
Some horrible turnovers today and most times we weren't punished. So far this season would like to see how many goals we have handed to the opposition, am sure we would be near the top of the list for goals conceded this way. Also we still seem too programmed when getting possessions, sometimes a clear path ahead but first instinct is backwards and putting a teammate under pressure unnecessarily. Would still have lost to most other sides today but I suppose you can only beat what's put in front of you. Miles again showing he should have been elevated for round 1. Another hack by foot in Thomas just butchers opportunities with his poor disposal, his goal was comical.
-
we still don't like the contested game, when we play dud sides or when even good sides allow us space we can torch them - but they know once you tighten the game up and force the contest - we are very very mediocre - how many of our players had more than 10 contested possessions today?
Edwards and Thomas with 11 each - Cotch with 10

Exactly. Add to that we are a poor tackling side and you have it!
-
It's fuckwicks team.
Not ours.

Says more about you though judge, fair dinkum , if you fell into a barrel of t@s , you'd come out sucking your thumb :lol
-
Why is it beneficial for the football club to win these games ?
I assure you I would come out sucking t@s. I merely don't understand how thumping the like of gws and beating a clearly terrible saint kilda helps the club win a flag. Which I think is the point.
More So wit a coach that clearly doesn't understand the reality of the situation (Miles, 3-10, crowds etc.)
-
It isn't Judge but you know the drill
Win another 5/6 finish close to 8th then the club feeds the bull poo over summer
Winning a game like today proves nothing other than we are still poo
I'm happy for dusty and particularly that kid with cancer. Outside of that there are no positives in winning to finish around 9/10
-
Not watched the game or listened to it but a win is a win. l can gather how ugly it was via the comments so l will force myself to watch it in the morning. l seen enough bad poo for 1 day already.
-
Yeh look.
We just have a lot of soft cox in the supporter base who fill their jocks with peecum over meaniningles wins
-
I think the so called soft cox are the ones who want us to lose
-
Sorry boss your right lets go 9th :clapping :gotigers
-
No judge ...I want my club to win every single game it plays.i don't for one minute buy this crap that finishing as low as possible will one day guarantee success..success starts now
-
And I dnt buy this crap that winning games against bottom 4 sides with a side filled with list blockers that continue to show the true colors vs decent and good sides - give us the best possible chance of one day, winning the flag.
But you continue to live in fairy floss land

correct we need to breed a winning culture. Every game must be played to win

Beating up on weaklings in the school yard that sometimes slap them.
Success.
-
I don't pretend that it means the world, but it means a heck of a lot more than losing , I d personally like to go undefeated the rest of the year but I imagine that you would be shattered with that prospect ::)

think the competition is more even than the media thinks. GWS Shaw smashed his mouth into Tipperts knee don't look good

Nice to have a win but really means zilch
Let's not get carried away. It was average opposition who are probably the worst side in the comp right now and we beat up on them.
Nothing more, nothing less
-
geez its quiet here of late. its like August in June :huh
-
pretty disappointing performance irrespective of the win, its one of those cheap wins we usually have in a season that costs us good players in the draft.

Exactly...if anything at stages we made them look good. Tell you what though, they have another Milne in the mist, Minchingten, gee he is going to be good. We just cant seem to pick these players up in the draft... :-\

Based on his 2 gifted goals?
Please, we made Kennedy-Harris look like a star and what's he done

We make plenty of opposition small forwards look like superstars

Michington has a very nice kick on him. His kicking was A grade and the way he put the ball into the saints forward line was something we dont have. He's much better than Kennedy Harris.

Exactly!!! It wasn't just about the goals.

Let's just see how he goes against a decent side before we acclaim him a superstar
