Pressure on Ivan: Tigers out to stop hot Todd

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick says stopping Todd Goldstein, who he rates has the best ruckman in the AFL, will go a long way to his team beating North Melbourne in Hobart on Saturday.
Goldstein leads the AFL in hit-outs (203 at 40.6 per game) this season, with Hardwick saying he will present as the biggest challenge this season for the Tigers' Ivan Maric.
"Ivan's form has been pretty good over the course of the year but Goldstein is another dimension from a playing point of view," Hardwick said on Thursday.
"His form is outstanding.
"He covers a lot of ground. He's an incredible athlete for a ruckman and he gets his hand on the ball."
Hardwick said Brett Deledio will be back in Richmond colours this weekend, but it's still to be decided whether that will be in the AFL or for the Tigers' VFL side.
The star midfielder has "ticked all the boxes" to play his first game since round one when he suffered a calf injury and had been closely watched at training on Thursday morning.
"He's missed four weeks but he's got 10 to 12 years of AFL experience behind him and he had a big pre-season so it's a matter of whether we think he's got enough in the tank," Hardwick said of Deledio.
Deledio played in round one against Carlton, but has been missing since with a lingering calf complaint.
Hardwick said the Tigers had not ruled out starting Deledio in the substitute's vest, with the club to weigh up whether he has enough match conditioning.
The Tigers could be boosted by the returns of Reece Conca and tall forward Ben Griffiths for Saturday's clash at Blundstone Arena.
"Conca played last week (in the VFL), whether he needs another game in the reserves, we’ll once again make a decision," Hardwick said.
"Griffo will train today and we’ll see how he pulls up. We're starting to get some players back, which is exciting."
Hardwick said lapses at critical points in games were costing his side dearly.
The Tigers coach pointed to a patch in the second quarter in his side's nine-point loss to Geelong last Saturday where it gave up four goals in six minutes.
"We just can't afford to have those lapses," Hardwick said.
"That's the difference between the Richmond side at the moment and the Richmond side I know I can get."

Trusting Brett Deledio to make a judgment on his fitness backfired spectacularly for Richmond in round one, but coach Damien Hardwick will be happy to do that again this week.
Deledio infamously put his hand up to play Carlton in the season opener but re-injured his calf so badly that he missed the Tigers' next four matches.
The dual best-and-fairest is now close to a senior recall ahead of Richmond's crunch clash against North Melbourne in Hobart on Saturday and, assuming he gets through training unscathed on Thursday, the match committee will then decide whether he lines up in the AFL or VFL this weekend.
"We'll get a good feel, obviously we ask the player, they know their body best and how he's feeling, whether he thinks he is fit enough to get through a whole game (or) half a game, we'll make that decision," Hardwick said ahead of training at Punt Road Oval on Thursday.
However, Hardwick was still wary of the risks involved in reintroducing Deledio to the cut and thrust of senior football after a month out and a run in the reserves was a very real option for the 215-gamer.
"He's missed four weeks but he has got probably 10-12 years of AFL experience behind him," Hardwick said.
"He had a big pre-season and it's just a matter of whether we think he's got enough in the tank.
"It's just whether or not from a game time point of view whether we think it's worth taking the risk of having a player that can possibly play half a game or three-quarters of a game playing as sub or on the ground.
"Good players would prefer to play at AFL level, the one thing that rears its head is ... if you lose a player early all of a sudden that game time of a player that's coming back through an injury of long-term nature is asked to play more and it puts him at further risk also."

RICHMOND has several critical decisions to make on gun midfielder Brett Deledio.
Coach Damien Hardwick and his match committee first must watch Deledio during the main training session at the Punt Road Oval and then wait on his immediate recovery.
If the Tigers decide he’s fully recovered from the calf muscle injury that has sidelined him since the opening round, then it’s a matter of how best to use him in the game against North Melbourne in Hobart on Saturday.
Hardwick didn’t rule out the possibility of Deledio starting in the substitute’s vest or even working back with the VFL team.
“It will be his second full session, so we’re looking forward to him getting through training and then we’ll have match committee this afternoon and we’ll be able to make an informed decision then,’’ Hardwick said before the Tigers’ main training workout of the week.
“He’s ticking all the boxes thus far, it’s just a matter of making sure he gets through training. He won’t train the whole session because he trained at greater length on Tuesday. From our point of view, it will be an informed decision. We’ll back ‘Lids’ in and our medical staff and go from there.
“Obviously, he has missed four weeks, but he has probably 10 to 12 years of AFL experience behind him. He had a big pre-season and it’s just a matter of whether he has enough in the tank.

Hardwick said the Tigers were mindful of the risk picking an underdone senior player if there’s an injury to another player early in the game against the Roos.
“He’ll get through training, it’s just whether or not from a game-time point of view, we’re prepared to take the risk of having a player who can possibly play only half the game, three-quarters as a sub or on the ground,’’ he said.
On the VFL option, the coach said: “Good players prefer to play at AFL level. The one think that does rear it’s head, and look it’s unlikely, if you do lose a player early, the player coming back with an injury of a long-time nature is asked to play more and puts him at further risk. They’re the decisions we make at match committee.’’
Defender Reece Conca is in line for a senior recall and the Tigers might tackle the Roos with three tall forwards if Ben Griffiths gets through training.

I was more so leading to this. For me a true healthcare professional doesn't endorse players trying to tough it out and cause further damage to their body. I mean it in the nicest way but ultimately footballers are meatheads and they need to be forced to not play when their body can't hold up to the rigour of modern day football.

We joke but there's probably some truth to it

Said it before, should be playing Hampson this weekend and just use him to wear down Goldstein as much as possible. Then sub him out half way through the third quarter, let Ivan finish the game out.
Going to get slaughtered at the stoppages, our midfield will be too slow to go with their's. Backline will be solid enough, forwards largely ineffectual, but the game will be lose in the midfield guaranteed.
